Hello from Montpellier/France. Congratulations for your beautiful video of the making of your 80 Lbs Mongolian bow I am a 77 year old artist, and I make small bows for my children and my grandchildren. for shooting on horseback Turks, but of weak powers. In my youth I competed and I was a good shooter. But with classic bows. Stabilizer, viewfinder etc. But for me, it's not real archery. I haven't shot an archery in 50 years. I lost all my muscles. Three years ago, I got back into the bow. But also made bows like you, Asians, Mongols and Turks, Etc. However, I am a good handyman and I have several trades in my hands. I did not think it was so complicated to make this kind of bows. I had started trying to make bows like yours, with sinew, buffalo horn and fish glue. But after two years, I gave up this kind of production. I have indeed broken 50 bows since July 2019 for several reasons. I continued with Bamboo, fiber and epoxy resin and very strong synthetic fiber pallet strapping rope. Since 2022, I've started to have good results with slightly different techniques than you. My arches are 0.95m, 1.10m and I start for 1.20/1.30m arches. The weight is 350gr/400-450gr. Power of 15/20/35 lbs. After three years of manufacturing, I will try to make a bow like you with the old ancient Asian techniques. But the only thing I keep from my experiences is the use of epoxy wood glues and also tendons. In France, it is impossible to have this kind of tenbon. It is prohibited for sale. It's stupid. Congratulations again for your work. Are you an artist. And a very good craftsman. Cheer. Patrick Dupré-opart. PS: Can you please tell what wood your bow is made of? If you are interested, I can send you seeds of "Osage des oranges", I have plenty of them 3 km from my village. It is a fast growing tree.
Thank you sir, It's my honor to hear your story and know about your work. I'm also started with self-taught about bow making. I'm succeed making fiberglass bow and wood-fiberglass laminated bow, broken alot of couse. I just got lucky that I meet a master about horn bow making and learned very much from him. I'm indeed not an artist or skillful craftsman, I'm just trying my best eachday. Thank you, sir, for noticed my work. If conviniece, i really love to got my hands on some osage orange seed. I have some usable native wood in my coutry, but I'm really curious about osage orange wood.
Everyone here has complimented on your beautiful bow, as they should. So what I would like to compliment is your appreciation. People have given you things to help and you are thankful for it. You are a kind soul. Never lose that!
I love the way you use traditional methods combined with modern tools and techniques. Melting hide glue in a pressure cooker. Great idea! I love how much time you spend with the finer details including laying out the sinew with such care. Then applying thin layers of birch like bark to the back of the bow. You're craftsmanship is top notch my friend!! Awesome work!!
Ancient culture and craftsman fascinate me too because they learned how to engineer and build things without modern technology. The bow has been used by every culture on earth and though they share many similar ideas they all have their own little unique ways to make them. I appreciate the people like yourself who try to keep the ancient skills alive so they are never forgotten and allows others to see how far we have advanced in our technology!
Fascinating! It boggles the mind to think of how much "cottage industry" it took to arm hundreds of thousands, if not millions of archers across Asia in ancient times! And that was without the benefit of electric tools! Amazing!

Even though we live in India our forefathers told us we are migrated from Mongolia thousands of years ago. I am hoping one day I will visit to Mongolia where our forefathers belong. We are from Manipur, north east side of India.
Indians migrated from around Iran, not mongolia. The later mughal empire was created by people who had mongolian heritage, but they were only a small part. Even the mongol empire by that point was largely made up of various other peoples, just led by genghis khan's family.
That's one impressive piece of work. I think "impressive" is an understatement. I'm at a loss of words. I make one piece selfbows and get frustrated when they brake on me. Well, if that horn bow broke on me I would just go ballistic. It was a pleasure watching you make it sir. Just subscribed, btw.
Absolutely the worst sound in archery is a hornbow breaking. And I've heard far too many break. Not just my own, but other archers' as well. In some ways, I feel worse when it's someone else's bow. as there is no way one can really comfort the archer in that situation. There is so much love and care that a bowyer puts into one. Then there is the archer's care and the bond developed between the archer and their bow as they string and tune the bow, learning the bows unique traits and personality. And in a fraction of a second, it's gone. With one exception, it's not going ballistic, but stunned silence and a bit of helplessness as there is nothing one can do, that I've observed.
Congrats for your work. Beautiful handcraft. But I have a doubt - How Mongols made hundred thousands, perhaps millions of a such bows one thousand years ago with much more primitive tools... a very deep mystery...
I'm not tested yet, but I shoot 50 meters and 70 meters with no problems, could be more. I used pretty heavy arrow - more than 700 grains and big feather so it's not fast but more powerful.
one of my fav things about making bows the traditional way is the bizarre stuff they use to make glues! like swim bladders from fish! how did they work this out?!?
I love every thing about this. The design, the work, and the completion. My ONLY concern, is when you are sanding bone or horn, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear a mask.
Wow, getting to work for an actual master bowyer is a real blessing! So many mistkes I could've avoided, and I'm still not as good as you (from what can be seen in the video at least), had I access to a proper craftsman PS Do you process the birch bark yourself or is it possible to order cleaned strips in Vietnam? I find this to be absolutely the most frustrating part of the job in the world...
I'm just very new to this art, still need to learn more about bow making. For the birch bark, luckily I can buy cleaned strips from China. I have tried to make from raw bark, but very slow and hard to make big picece, so I decied to buy it. :D
Thank you so much for sharing this information and being honest about your experience in bow making. And also giving us the chance to learn how to make a horn bow from both you and your master. 😊😊😊
Brother if possible could you please make a pdf detailing the process and the measurements of each part of the bow and post upload it as a link. I just cannot find any blueprints or any detailed crafting for the mongol or any hornbow for that matter. Please :)🙏. Thank You in advance
standing ovation. Bravo. I can watch and watch without end. Thank you. What are the characteristics, how many pounds for which draw, what is the speed of the arrow and the main question, what is the price of this miracle? Thank you, good luck to you!
Thank you for noticed my work. Sorry for late response, I can not online recently. This bow reach 80lbs at 31 inches draw lenght. I'm not do speed test yet, but this bow is not fast, design for shooting heavy arrow. I'm selling this bow for 1500$, if you still interested, please contacts me via links at the description. Again, thank you so much for your support.
Love the craftsmanship. Can you tell me which is more difficult to draw??? Is it more difficult to draw a horse bow or is it more difficult to draw a modern bow???
Thank you for noticed my work. It's depends on draw weight, design, material...than the term "horse bow" or "modem bow". For example, shorter bow always easier to draw than longer bow or bow made of nature material draw easier than modem material...For me, "horse bow" is a lazy word to call Asiatic traditional bow. There are so many cultrures, countries, activities...under the term "horse bow" - kind of not fair if use just one word to call it all like that.
As someone more familiar with more western-style self bows, it's interesting to see how little of what I would call tillering is used to make this bow, and is instead mostly specific shaping pre-stringing. The end result is marvellous
This Mongol bow has stable design, so it's pretty easy to tiller. I tried to make English long bow before, I used wrong wood so it broke, btw. The tillering process of long bow make way bigger mess than horn bow. :D
@@nanashibow8091 I make bows too, ELB is pretty hard design on some woods as it works the best on yew, I make flatbows almost 99% of the time but someday I want to try making hornbow too. Regards.
@@borisv.6503 Hello from France, What wood do you use to make your bows? Have you ever used orange osage wood for the manufacture of a Turkish and Asian type bow of 1.10m along. I too for a year I have been making composite bows of 1m and 1.10-1.20m long maximum. 350 gr / 400 gr maximum weight. I broke 50 bows in two years, before I could make any correctly. But my bows that I make are only for me and mafinne and my 3 grandchildren. They have low powers. 20 and 35 LBS only. I use bamboo and carbon. and epoxy fiber rods. Best wishes. Patrick Dupre
Excellent work and video, thank you. I'm not sure if it's true, but I heard that in some areas the Mongol bows / similar types got wet and the glue and/or the bow failed. Is that why the birch bark is applied - to make the bow waterproof, especially over glued areas? Thanks again and best wishes.
Thank you for noticed my work. It's true, main reason of covering with birch bark is protect the glue not to get wet and melt down, so the bow can work under the rain hand high moisture. But it's not totally waterproof, still need to dry after used.
I am Romanian and after my final highschool exam, I want to start learning how to shoot with a bow. ❤
I think it is funny how people will debate the merits of a Mongolian bow versus an English longbow. The simple fact is, the Mongolian bow is far superior however, it is very difficult to make, and will fall apart in English weather. So for England and that kind of weather a yew bow is better. You can make one in an hour or two. And if you break one, it's not a huge loss. Their performance for the effort put in is amazing. For me though, I live in a dry stepp climate. And would take the Mongol bow. This young man has done an excellent job!
Is Korean bow also a variation of the Mongolian bow? I mean they look alike to a degree though Korean bow seems to be a bit shorter and more flexible. I've been into this bow lately but there's very little I can find about its history.
Excellent build. You showed putting cut up cow skin into a cooker. For how long and at what temperature did you cook it? How many times did you filter the glue? Thanks
What is the actual poundage for full draw of this bone bow? You didn't bring string fingers to a rest site, with very quick release because of the poundage?
Excelente trabajo.

I'm not tested yet, but I shoot 50 meters and 70 meters with no problems, could be more. I used pretty heavy arrow - more than 700 grains and big feather so it's not fast but more powerful.
Very nice bow..
It’s shows the patience needed to make it..
It would really be nice to have one…
Better to see you make it
Thank you for your support, I'm really appreciate.
Like your collection of swords and bows.
Great work and very good archery skills as well, maybe make a crossbow next?
Thank you for your support. Sadly that I have no interested in cross bow, I'll make other types of bow then.
one of my fav things about making bows the traditional way is the bizarre stuff they use to make glues! like swim bladders from fish! how did they work this out?!?
Mongolinanbow maybe best or Reflex bow.50:50 Good job .❤Master class 👏. Respect .
Gorgeous bow. You're very skilled
great work and a beautiful bow, if you ever want to get rid of it ;)
I love every thing about this. The design, the work, and the completion. My ONLY concern, is when you are sanding bone or horn, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear a mask.
Thank you, sometimes I just got lazy, now I'm wearing mask all the time working with dusty job.
marvelous, great attention to detail and hard work shows through. Thank you for showing us. Fine Shooting!
How much do you charge for one?
Outstanding. I’ve been waiting for a video making this bow for a long time. Great job. You are a craftsman
1:28 🌭 practicality at its finest. 😂
I love that finished bow 🏹 a beautiful master piece
Wow, that is beyond beautiful! A masterpiece of craftsmanship!
Its a beauty . Where can I buy a genuine bow like this ? Will have to visit Mongolia 🙂
beautiful bow, amazing work and skill. wish I can have one
Wow! What a great detailed video, and bow! 😁
Time we'll spent watching you work 🤯
Beautifully done! You're a badass sir.
I love this. It looks like it takes a long time, can you use synthetic materials?
Wow, getting to work for an actual master bowyer is a real blessing! So many mistkes I could've avoided, and I'm still not as good as you (from what can be seen in the video at least), had I access to a proper craftsman
PS Do you process the birch bark yourself or is it possible to order cleaned strips in Vietnam? I find this to be absolutely the most frustrating part of the job in the world...
I'm just very new to this art, still need to learn more about bow making. For the birch bark, luckily I can buy cleaned strips from China. I have tried to make from raw bark, but very slow and hard to make big picece, so I decied to buy it. :D
This is actually a very sophisticated fibre reinforced composite material bow . It works and is beautiful as well . How much one costs?
Beautiful work. Quite young man has learned a lot.
In which part of the video did you horn the bow?
09:00
It's just that you can't see precisely how you placed it.
can you zoom in?
From one craftsman to another, very well done. Subbed.
Thank you for your support. :D
what a lot of work and many hours , beautiful result
Beautiful and well crafted bow. How much will it cost for a 50 lbs. draw weight at 28 inch draw length with delivery to San Diego, California, USA.
Thank you so much for sharing this information and being honest about your experience in bow making. And also giving us the chance to learn how to make a horn bow from both you and your master. 😊😊😊
Thank you for your support.
Brother if possible could you please make a pdf detailing the process and the measurements of each part of the bow and post upload it as a link. I just cannot find any blueprints or any detailed crafting for the mongol or any hornbow for that matter. Please :)🙏. Thank You in advance
That would be great ay
That is a work of art! Beautiful!
Very nice bow. Respect from Mongolia.
You got a great talent, keep doing that great work
standing ovation. Bravo.
I can watch and watch without end.
Thank you.
What are the characteristics, how many pounds for which draw, what is the speed of the arrow and the main question, what is the price of this miracle?
Thank you,
good luck to you!
Beautiful! I hope to visit your country one day.
Stabilisateur, viseur etc. Mais pour moi, ce ‘est pas du vrais tir à l’arc. Je n’ai pas tiré à l’arc depuis 50 ans. J’ai perdu tous mes muscles.
Depuis trois ans, je me suis remis à l’arc.
I want one. Excellent craftsmanship 👍👍⚡⚡
This is a fantastic video. I'd love to see a video on making hide glue!
Yes, I just buy new batch of skin to make hide glue, I'll film the process.
I am Romanian and after my final highschool exam, I want to start learning how to shoot with a bow.
❤
You have to visit south of Korea.
Given the Mongols had 4 invasions into Korea, 1253-1258, I wonder who influenced who?
@@VonDutch68 I see where it’s going but turns out Korea managed to survive those 4 invasions.. so guess who influenced who?
Excellent build. You showed putting cut up cow skin into a cooker. For how long and at what temperature did you cook it? How many times did you filter the glue? Thanks
I cooked at 70 celcius. First batch stew for 24 hrs, 2nd and last batch stew for 12 hrs.
@@nanashibow8091 thank you!
I experienced great pleasure watching the work of this young master. I also love archery and enjoy watching videos with real masters.
wow .. that is a beautiful bow you made thanks for showing us the making of that bow
Thank you for noticing my work. :D

Wow, that is beyond beautiful! A masterpiece of craftsmanship!. Bom trabalho.
Actually very impressive work, and a'Very Very nice Now,good job Man, 🤠
amazing engering very good the most great video about bow making
Wonderful work!!!!! And who made your arrows? Maybe he wants to make a video as well?
Wow that's a masterpiece beautiful art I was wondering how much cost one of you bows
Thank you for noticing my work. For a horn bow, it's about 900-1800$ depends on types, poundage and decoration. And will take 12-15 months to make.
It's beautiful bow! Great job! Greetings from Brazil!
Thank you, just try my best in it, greeting from Vietnam:D
Wow !!! Beautiful craftsmanship.
Thank you for noticing my work. :D
What is the actual poundage for full draw of this bone bow? You didn't bring string fingers to a rest site, with very quick release because of the poundage?
you are skillful and artist to acquire such knowledge, excellent work!
Hola muy buen trabajo.
Un saludo desde España 🇪🇦🖐
Amazing video and excellent craftsmanship! I’m trying to build my own bow and I was wondering what type of horn you used
Thank you for noticed my work. I used buffalo horn for my bow. But you can use ox horn (for light bow), ibex horn or sheep horn also.
@@nanashibow8091 wonderful, thanks👍🏻
Very nice work 👍👍👍
Amazing craftmanship, how many weeks does it take you from start to finish?
Totally, It's took me 12 months for this bow. Mostly wait for the glue to dry.
Excelente trabajo.
Thank you for your support. Please send contact with me via email: tannn331@gmail.com or through links above, I'll send you.
Respect to the old timers who did all that by hand
