Chris, bought an R1100RT 1998 Model only done 44,000 miles in great condition. What needed doing was the cam chain tensioner. Just watched your video and it’s so helpful. I’m just waiting for the new parts to come and have no worries about doing the job because of your video.. Thanks so much Regards Pat (UK)
Hey Chris, thank you for all your help. Another BMW expert(?) says the cylinder needs to be at TDC to correctly install. Could you provide clarity on whether this procedure is required? Thanks much! Mike
The spring is weak on the original design and only becomes weaker with use. I'd replace the tensioner every 50,000 miles. Beemer Boneyard has replacements for less $$ than BMW: www.beemerboneyard.com/11317656922cuk.html
and make sure the springy (movement part of that part) is facing upward to the sky when you drop it in, otherwise the bolt will never be able to catch the threads.
Just changed the tensioner on my 99 RT. Your video was very helpful. Thanks and subscribed. I don't live within 350 miles of a BMW shop, so I have a feeling I will frequent your videos often.
No! The right tensioner is inverted (bottom-up) so it fills with oil and remains 'pumped up' hydraulically. The left side original tensioner has a weak spring and did not hold hydraulic pressure so it allows the rail to be slapped by the chain. Thanks & greetings from New England :)
thnx for this, and all the other video's Chris, your fu.......explanations ar fantastic and very instructive. I have received my new chain tensioner today and will install it right away on my r1100rt 1998 best regards from holland.
Prends soin de toi, Chris - Hello Patrick, my BMW world stops at 2004 models but I wish you luck. Take care, Chris
iIs ridiculous how easy that came out for you, i'm seriously pissed off after 3 hours of trying to get the threaded cylinder out, the spring is too high and wont allow removal. also the large O ring on the TB is too large .....probably with age.
Hi chris greetings from venezuela... a question.. its posible that make clap clap clap noise not always but only when hot? .. when cold or warm never do the noise... or you think that it come from other cause... thanks a lot
Good video Chris where can I get that tensioner ? I live in Ireland my bike is a bmw r850rt recently started rattling not bad but I'm concerned about it
My '04 1150 GSA, 13k miles on it ! Bought last year..LIKE NEW...I got the replacement spring/piston/nut. Managed to get the old one out. On the new one, The resistance of the spring is hard to overcome, as you TRY to thread it. Cut down a 17 mm socket so I could get some pressure on it as I tried to turn the socket handle. (Socket and socket handle were too TALL). Wrenching was impossible, trying to put pressure and still get a wrench in there. Was afraid of mangling threads. So far, won't catch a thread. I'll keep trying. Why mechanics HATE engineers. Me too...UGH...OK: U P D A T E !....got a strong screwdriver, put pressure on the shaved down socket...worked..but what struggle...wanna know what...P E R S I S T E N C E !..pays...and prayer..and I don't pray much...NOISE ?..G O N E !...You're such a help, Chris !...Your grit and realness...WELCOME...Thanks..LARGE !
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful but the result was bad for me, could you give me some advice? I post in your old video (about the chain tensioner) all the details... seems like I am the only one who got bad result... what of the chances!! fu*k! heheheh thanks in advance! :)
Cheers for such a great walkthrough. Just about to order a new now I’ve seen how simple they are to fit.

Did he replied????
I saw that video and I am really wondering if there's a need to put the piston at TDC.
I replaced it afew days ago, my old 98´ R850RT didn´t have that clattering sound, but I thought it was wise to upgrade the tensioner anyway.

Just did the deed and boy is the engine startup quieter, Thanks Chris!

Рёбра на цилиндре сточи круглым напильником, и трещеткой ключем отворачивай.
Furkin fantastic! Thanks!
