For the first time ever, award-winning comedian and freestyle rapper Chris Turner (“A virtuoso...a hip-hop machine" -The Guardian) breaks down how to do it, and performs a couple of improvised numbers along the way.
Learn how off-the-cuff rhyming can free your mind, activate your subconscious, and innovate on the edges of your ability.

I've watched many of Chris's freestyles and I genuinely want to know what is happening in his brain when he does this. Astounding.

Flow state
It’s abounding in astounding..genuinely resounding..in a constant rhyming flow state..yeah yeah that you can’t fake.. we gotta unbuckle our minds let it spins freely like a dime.. it takes time.. like a master chef cooking rhymes without thoughts on a hot burner.. like Chris Turner..
Ouch, it hurts my head!😂
He explained it one time. He said the trick is to not pre think anything. Just let your mind be imaginative in the moment
He literally explained it in this video :D
There is nothing more satisfying than the audio levels getting fixed halfway through that rap.
Finally RUclips recommended something right!
Uh....well,just for sake of trolling YT users like you and I,the FBI agent,after reading your comment,might hack our YT recommendations.
Thanks for your comment! :v
MrSpeedyAce check out his other videos. He’s amazing!
MofongoGringo I’m on the Chris Turner train. I can’t stop watching his videos!
MrSpeedyAce me too bro! He’s amazingly talented!
I was surfing the net about to go to bed when my fingers held the mouse and brought me here instead, now i'm rapping as I type cause he's got me inspired but it's time to go to sleep cuz i'm so effin tired!
Bars!
That was so dope but you need to know
You can easily drop bars when your on the go
Wether your walking, cycling, or at school
You will really impress and they think your so cool
Learn to string the words along and put them together
But don’t try to hard or you’ll feel under the weather
Try not to practice so late at night
Or you’ll wake up in the morning feeling so shite
So take it slow and easy to learn to rhyme
You will eventually pick it in no time
This is my little advice, so please take heed
You will soon be a freestyle rapper indeed
Ok bro, I got a similar story;
I been watching these videos in my tiny Finnish cottage;
Last night I was tired, fell asleep to these;
And today in school all my friends were like jeez;
when I dropped a couple, freestyle bars;
And now I understand it's actually not even that hard;
And I'm really impressing my counscious mind;
Right now when I type quickly and it really rhymes;
But when you freestyle rap, writing style;
It would be easy to bluff in these times;
But really take my word, when I state;
I'm really just typing, non-stop mate;
I will only correct, and put the points;
After finishing this rap, that hurts my finger joints;
I can't go on for long anymore at this rate;
So just belive me when I state;
in Finnish freestyling is harder, mate;
But still rapping in Finnish, I dont really hate
The words just don't, ryhme so often;
But you can manage it if your Finnish is sufficent;
enough and you have the brain to freestyle rap
But I too have to sleep, so I call that a wrap.
Lit rhmes my guy didnt see the flow until u said u were ryhming
I was about do my dishes and stop watching youtube
when I came across this vid and it brought me good mood
then short after I saw your comment below it
and it really made me smile and I wanted to try it
the advice that Chris gave in his awesome talk
and I think it's really fun I'll try it next time I walk
I guess you really just have to let go and let come the flow
and stop thinking ahead but rather making a show
by going line for line and not thinking too hard
I guess I am now pretty happy and think it was a good start
I gotta see him in some rap battles
me too lets see how monster he will be on a written verse
@@hupaogaming9559 r/wooooosh that's the exact opposite of a rap battle
@@hupaogaming9559 Written verse is the exact opposite of Freestyle. His mind is making the lyrics.....NOT the words on a page.
@@einousmi not the *exact* opposite, although it seems that way.
In battles you still prep a stack of disses, but fit them in between reactions to what they said. Especially if you know who you're up against ahead of time. You think rap battlers don't do any research or prep you're crazy
It would be something special to experience him and Beardyman - both on the same sound system. :)
uterus is where the baby grow if you wanna put a baby in thats where it go.
Highly educational
and it also comes out and thats when it starts the shouts
Science 101.
T0PAZ Ayyyyyy yo this flow and dem bars were madddd negl 😂😂
This guy is amazing, the fact he does this on the spot is mind blowing.
I still remember how you managed to put my 'pre-raphaelites' into your rap at my O2 Guru conference last year in Leeds.. and managed to follow it with 'Pikachu'.... hope you're well Chris... Top Man!!
How is this not viral? Straight fire man! 🔥
Because he is not conforming to the ideals of the music industry.
Ig its our treasure. Right?
If Eminem was a rocket surgeon.
Jason Coward - Is that a cross between a rocket scientist and a brain surgeon??
@@ONI1013. yes.
Hahahaahahahaha i see and like what you did there
LOL, rocket surgeon!
Mate Varszegi lmfao.
That ABBA joke was 10/10
Love that the audience member actually had an orange.
There are a few close rhymes for orange if you drop the g in ING depending on how you pronounce orange Like soaring, boring, foreign, and the two that Chris mentioned losange & door hinge.
@@tecwzrd What a nice and arculated reply to a two year old comment that didn't even ask the question you answered.
Eino Usmi I saw no question, just a comment related to the reply...
Why should you expect that conversation be competitive?
It can be additive, repetitive and also be repetitive.
barryschwarz nice
Fascinating. I have a theory on this. They say that in order to truly "learn", it's best to participate in the process (instead of just trying to cram facts into your brain). By approaching everything in life in this artful way, you're more inclined to retain that information. It's fun, entertaining, and Chris has mastered this process. I imagine Chris subconsciously raps in his head in most (or all) of his daily encounters.
His command of words and spontaneous access to useful information demonstrates a level of intelligence not often seen today.
This should probably be researched as a learning tool. It would likely lead to a more enjoyable and fulfilling life.
Kudos Chris. I think you may have cracked the code!
You should go and watch Harry mack
Well what he does isn’t really new or code cracking, he just simply continuously practicing since he was 12 which would make it look easy. But it would be easier if he’s more dominant in the musical intelligence area than someone who isn’t. But many years of research and studies have gone into how music has helped retained information along with other common memory techniques people have used.
I love that you could probably do any high-stress, think-fast-on-your-feet job, but freestyle rap is how you use those skills.
Damn son! That's how it's done!
Love this guy's flow (cadence), its so smooth in a freestyle.
What actually took my attention more about his performance while rapping is that he doesn't show signs he's losing breath as he goes along,which is what normally occurs even with professional rappers.
His flow is smooth,but his breath management is what stood out the most for me.
You should see him here - ruclips.net/video/NdTalMWrQ7c/видео.html. He’s actually gotten better.
@@pabloalves438 breath management?? This is freestyle bro..if this bars was written.. he know which words he can take a breath.. FYI take a breath.. makes yor raps more dramatic.. pardon my english...
Keong Balap it’s a freestyle, yes, but he knows what he’s gonna say a little ahead of time. You think he did all that on one breath? No. You think he paused? No. He knows words that allow you to take a bit of a breath and so he uses them. Just cuz it’s a freestyle doesn’t mean he didn’t need to breath
Needs to be on Americas got talent or Britains got talent so the masses can see this..Positive he would be a hit..
congrats to the audio guy for almost recording him.
lol i was looking for this comment
His subs have exploded this week. Deserves the recognition. Clever (and really funny) guy.
Those who believe chris are too generous to themselves. Everything he said is true, but above and beyond those things, he has ridiculous talent
It's just practice, man. I just started rapping, like, a few months ago and I'm already going pretty decently off the dome. Interestingly, long before I ever saw this video, I naturally did exactly what he describes here: Basically, whenever I'm doing dishes or laundry or any mundane chore like that, I put on instrumental trap beats in the background and just start freestyling until I'm done with the chore. When I first started, I couldn't even get a full sentence out without stuttering and stammering, let alone make it rhyme on the fly. Now, I regularly freestyle for several full minutes before I stumble. If you practice and--most importantly--get out of your own way, stop trying to think ahead, and just let the words come out 95% on their own (almost like a meditation), you improve really quickly. It's a super weird feeling to not know what you're going to say until the words are actually coming out of your mouth (I've even surprised myself with punchlines I didn't plan, wasn't expecting, and only heard as I was saying them), but it's definitely something pretty much anyone can develop.
On the other hand, I have a friend who started trying to rap around the same time as me. He doesn't ever practice on his own, doesn't listen to any hip-hop that I don't play for him, and, whenever we try to freestyle, he continually tries to plan out his bars before he says them out loud (like, he sits there with the music playing, silently trying to construct a full 4 or 8 in his head before vocalizing them bc he can't let go of the control freak, "it's gotta be perfect before I speak" part of himself). Not surprisingly, he still can't rap and definitely can't freestyle. In fact, he's so in his head (and his own way) about it, he has yet to freestyle even a decent couplet.
Seriously, it's just practice. If you do it, you improve. If you don't, you won't. Period.
not talent knowledge - when you know words events descriptions trivia general knowledge - you just pluck from the information already in your head
Great Jethro Tull shout. As Tull fans are dying breed.
This guy has a gift!
I think he is teaching improv rap - ultra instinct style. Don’t think, just let it flow now.
Yea it’s not as hard as people think tbh. Start slow, think before what you say while in a rhythmic fashion.
this is what real freestyle is, not spitting writtens like so many do today.
Adam I’ll never spit a written. I’ve studied the greats. Practice almost daily since I was young. It was my only escape was poetry. It’s very easy for me as a Pisces to do that
Juwan Deniro he wasn’t talking to you and we don’t give a shit about your life story
Seth Doan not my fault you’re neurotic bro lmaooo
Its mathematically exponentially harder to rhyme a phrase than not. Thats why rhyming is amazing. That's why slant rhymes and internal rhymes make rhyming probably the most entertaining thing possible to humans intellectually. When your rhyme density is as high as Big Pun you will notice the phrases sound like an instrument its literally irregardless of what you are actually saying the phonetics make it so enjoyable
That babbage line was so fire mad respect very intellectual
I saw one comment here, that I liked;
It rhymed like a rap, so I'mma type;

That's what the audience probably expected to come but then they noticed, that it was actually very good ...
@@mart_en ?
@@einousmi Short version : Chris is extremely good and talented. You gave it a shot and were all right
@@mart_en whats wrong with you? That was realy great and it totaly put me in his moment.
AAYLV it was good, nothing special. That’s all he’s saying. He’s not being rude. It was just decent and he’s saying that what the audience was probably expecting. Not a freestyle that is extraordinary
Chris, after I saw video of you
I thought you're actually right
So in the beginning I got no real clue
And nothing interesting to write

Genius is the most overused word in the English dictionary. Not in this case though.
Genius
I'm pretty sure the word genius only appears once in the dictionary.

DUDE!!! You’re my favourite but I’ve been watching tons of Harry Mack stuff and ppl ask him how he got so good and he says that he started at 12 too!!! My mind is blown: you TWO GUYS ARE THE BEST TWO IN THE WORLD.. and you’re BOTH IN LA, and you both started at the same young age.. does this prove parallel universes?!?
Please hook up man cause everybody LOVES YOU 2 GUYS!!!! 👊💰👍👏😎
This guy is frickin' brilliant! I've been watching him for a lil while and I'm continuously impressed. Bravo sir.
I've been recently inspired by him and just started doing this.. days before seeing this I stared rapping about as random stuff as I could think of. I have been stumped and studered but I've also hit some solid bars... hes right. U can do this.
Sound guy you are fired!
This mans is brilliant and smart as hell
I honestly don't care what anyone else thinks about this, but I have the BIGGEST crush on Chris. Seriously. I think I figured out what turns me on so much about him.
1. He's extremely intelligent, and intellect turns me on like nothing else. To me nerdy talk is dirty talk.
2. Despite his intelligence, he is also humble and does not take himself too seriously.
3. He's funny and that is a huge plus, not just for me but for most women.
Not that this would ever happen, but if we dated and he proposed... he sure as hell better do it in a freestyle rap. ;)
Lucky guy!
Well, sorry for you then, he's married.
I look forward to more videos.Keep it up!
This kid needs more fame. I'm equally entertained as I am impressed!
This dude is amazing. Simply. Ah-MAZING!
Wow he is good peep's his freestyling is spot on I was thinking of making a rap for my family to show how much I love them. I have been listening to rap hip-hop since I was young this has inspired me. I am going to make my rap track.
Did you do the rap for you’re family ?
I don't trust anyone who has a dislike for Jethro tull.and also anyone from LA
Jethro Tull's Seed Drill x
My brain doesn’t even work fast enough to keep up with him hahaha
hmmm yep... someone said below, SWAY in the morning... got to get him on there
Man, I wish you fame and fortune. Those skills. So well read. How did you know the survivor of the Hindenburg crash lived Parachute, Colorado? BEAST!
One of the things that makes him so great is that he is extremely knowledgeable about a variety of topics, so in the moment he is able to make unique connections
Furthermore he has excellent infections. All I know is that he impresses me, the ease of rhyme is spectacular to see
Cquests101 I’ll bet he spends almost all of his time reading to feed that incredible sponge brain of his.
/// Legendary Freestyle Rap ///

I’m in the music business and he is the most amazing freestyle rapper in the history of rap. People not in the business don’t understand how difficult it is and how talented he is. If you haven’t seen him do his thing before, look up some of his other videos to see for yourself. No I don’t know him or ever met him I just find him incredible
Me and my partner are going through this rap battle stage... I’ve never won a single battle, I’m just here picking up some tips
Ridiculous skill. Amazing!

Rules: 5 suggestion
1) no food, animals, nothing too obvious(last week)--D to be on the edge, totally present
2) rhyme over reason
3) not think about it(shower just pick something and rap about it in the moment- doesn't matter if rhyme same)
