I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. Yours, very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham. Lincoln

He means that people in the next generations won’t have the blessing to meet these World War II veterans since they are all beginning to pass away. Not that there are none left
My grandfather died when I was 9 or 10 years old. Little did I know at that time what he did for this country. He was Omaha Beach 6 days after the main assault. He wrote in his journal that they were still bringing the dead off the beach. He was a lieutenant and he had an aid that was under his command. A German mortar shell landed and he watched his aid get blown apart by the mortar. Shrapnel teared into his leg and he was no longer able to fight. Don’t remember the exact date that this happened but he received the Purple Heart. I now thank every veteran both old and new each chance I get. Because treading my grandfathers journal taught me of the courage and bravery these men and women of back then and in current times have to lay their lives on the line for the freedoms we have in this country. God Bless our veterans and thank you for everything you have sacrificed in the name of Freedom.
The deceased never knew their stories we're told by millions of people. They truly deserve our appreciation, how they served our country will be something that will never be neglected. Their reputation precedes them.
if you're british, French, Canadian or even german going into any war where you're risking your life for someone else's agenda is pure bravery. Worst thing is that many people joined not knowing what they were going in to
@Jam Lee Oh yeah, because definetely the US was the one who started WW2. And it's like US was the only country in WW2 to commit war crimes. Compared to what the Axis did during the war, the Allies were pretty tame.
God chose and made this generation to be tough, God fearing soldiers; boys just out of high school and made men with their first battle! They came from the farms and cities all of one mind: to destroy the evils of Japan and Germany. The Almighty was with them to see them through, or to bring them home, as their days were assigned to them! Never another generation will be like them.
Hi guys. I'm lucky enough to live in Normandy, not far from there, so i can come to this place every year to pay my respect. I've never been able to visit USA, so i imagine a lot of you has never been in my country. Well first of all i want you to know that your boys are in Peace here... the place is beautiful, peaceful and quiet... you can hear the waves and the wind in trees that comes from their homeland... It is really a good place to rest, altough of course it's not Home... I wish that you can come in the future to see this. And please ! leave a comment if you want some infos, tips or help for accomodations. It would be a pleasure to help you to come here .I wish you all the best :)
I'm planning a trip there next year around D day to expirence all this. Its been a dream of mine for many years. I have the utmost respect for everyone that served. And I year you don't really get the full impact of the cemetery there until you are there in person
I had the honor to be in Normandy a month after the 75 th anniversary. It’s so beautiful, it actually reminded me of my hometown in the USA. I live in France. The French have never forgotton the price the allies made...in the next village up from where I live there is a memorial cross with the names of 13 America soldiers killed that were ambushed by the Germans, the memorial is kept immaculate, twice every year the tricolour and flowers are laid and services are held. The names of the dead are known to everyone in the village, and there are even a few people that , as children, remember the incident. The memories fade, but in this little village in France, they will never be forgotton.
@Pava Scotty Hello. The name of the village is Chateauneuf-du-faou, in Brittany. I was by coincidence there yesterday, always stop and "have a word with them" if that makes sense.....plenty on the internet about the ambush, and the civilians also shot...Thank you for asking.

When he finally made the beach, he had to use a fallen comrades weapon he told me. Sad thing is politics of today are trying to strip us of our freedoms that these brave men and ones before them fought and died to give us. The time may come again soon where we will have to water the tree of liberty with the blood of tyrants and Patriots
@Jack Stucki First of all, thank you for your service. Second, many American soldiers were not involved in such actions, and although what you say is true, most German citizens we're not killed when they encountered American troops. The reason we fought WWII was to defend ourselves from the Japanese and help defend France, Great Britian, and other European countries from Hitler's reign. If we lost the war, then the freedom of the American people is in danger. Most soldiers who were sent to fight were fighting with the mentality that we must defend our freedom, and the freedom in Europe. To call soldiers who fought in WWII "Savage" is a misrepresentation. These men were sent to a battlefield after being drafted. They fought against a military that broke many rules of war, such as chemical warefare, killing citizens, etc. WWII was not mainly firebombing citizens, and when it did happen, it was the USSR doing such actions. Also, what branch if the military were you in and how long have you been in it?
@Jack Stucki England and France declare war on Germany because Germany kept invading smaller countries, and would obviously invade France and then GB. Even if Germany did not use chemical warefare, they still broke rules against humanity and many Nazis who had higher ranks and committed mass murder are still being tried for their crimes. When people hear about the war in Afghanistan, some say stuff like "oh the military killed some civilians in bombings" and other stuff. And with all of these factors and stuff in mind, we have to really think about it. Also, we had to go to war with Germany because of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, who, after declaring war on Japan, we were declared war on Germany. Once already, we interpreted a message that Germany tried to send to Mexico asking for Mexico to attack the US, ofcourse, Mexico did not, but it goes to show that Germany was already trying to attack America, but knowing the power of our military, did not want to fully get involved. Are you trying to say we should not respect WWII veterans, most of which did not commit war crimes? What are you trying to say?
@Jack Stucki I can see what you are saying, and although I don't agree with half of what your saying, the outcome of the war is not who won, but what is left.
The greatest generation of soldiers that will ever exist on this planet. The bravery, strength, and courage these men had is unimaginable. God Bless America🇺🇸

Well of the 16 million Americans that were deployed in WW2, less than 325,000 are alive today as of November 11, 2020

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham. Lincoln

The Almighty was with them to see them through, or to bring them home, as their days were assigned to them! Never another generation will be like them.

My great grandfather stormed Normandy on D-Day. Don Meeks. He bailed out of his boat and lost his gear trying to swim. When he finally made the beach, he had to use a fallen comrades weapon he told me. He had been shot in the ass and upper thigh but was so frightened and motivated to live that he didn't know until someone else dragged him to a med tent. He used to joke and say "Ladies love battle scars but I got one I can't exactly show off eh?" Love and miss him very much

These veterans have kept their dignity with personal history and the memories of their comrades who remained there, never to come back. Words are not enough to address them the gratitude the whole world has with their courageous determination to keep our freedom. Thank you so much! May God keep you well.❤
What a masterpiece! Respect.

I was stationed in Hawaii and took a trip over to pearl harbor to go onto the USS Arizona memorial once I had gotten my ticket, went on the memorial, and was about to leave I saw this table with two WW2 veterans sitting at it and it turns out they were both USS Arizona survivors so I walked up to them thanked them for their service and asked them to sign my memorial ticket its absolutely incredible to have had that experience and its been a pleasure to have met some of these heroes today.

If they saved Europe, then why is it that Europe is experiencing everything Hitler warned us about, which was also outlined in the 1925 book Practical Idealism?
“We will never see their like again”... General Dwight David Eisenhower.
The greatest generation of soldiers that will ever exist on this planet. The bravery, strength, and courage these men had is unimaginable. God Bless America🇺🇸
