@Eric Chambers well it depends at what time in the war and what unit if it was an SS or wehrmacht soldier from 1939 to maybe 1942 they would very likely trust in Hitler and believe they are doing what is right for the country as losses (not casualties I meant losing a battle) where small and on the whole until late 1942 the germans were holding out pretty well but if you get into mid/late 1943-1944 things would prolly start to change especially in areas like the North African campaign or the eastern front were troops had either had suffered great defeat as in the north African campaign or had suffered both extremely heavy casualties and defeats as in the eastern front which by 1944 the germans were definitely on the fall back so in that case it would still be likely that a good amount of SS soldiers would be loyal though some wehrmacht elements and even some SS would probably be having doubts in Hitler by then and by 1945 most units had pretty much lost hope in the war I mean of course they still fought hard even then but especially in the case of volksturm units and other hastly thrown together forces and many wehrmacht units would probably have realised by then that Hitler's dream were a bunch of horseshit and the war was probably lost for them I mean when an alliance from the western front is steadily making it's way from the west and the Soviets are steamrolling through the east do you really think anyone at that point in time that wasnt a nazi fanatic really thought they could come out of the war victorious or that they could even stop half the enemy's I mean by late 1945 most German units were probably more concerned of the fact that they should better surrender to the Brits or the Americans then the Soviets because the Soviets would probably just either kill you or send you off to a tough labor camp then the thought of a strategic defense for the fatherland and Hitler

When I moved in, I was carrying my stuff down to the basement, then the guy came and introduced himself. His basement was next to mine. When I shook his hand I noticed that two of his fingers were missing. Couple of days later I was working out in my basement, he noticed me training there and told me that he was also doing a lot of exercises when he was young because he was in the army in WW2. He told me about his hand that he lost both fingers while being a POW in a russian camp. He was repeating "I lost my fingers to Ivan". In his age he was still smoking cigarettes and drank shots of Korn in his basement. He even invited me there to drink a couple of shots with him. He was very kind and said that he was living in this building since 1957. 1 year later this man died because he drank some kind of chemical washing liquid. I cannot tell you more about his war experience because he wasn't talking about it often and I didn't want to ask, it could have made him feel uncomfortable. But I can tell you more about him. He was very often in his basement because his wife was always yelling 😄 You could hear her even from downstairs. He had a radio, a carpet, a lot of tools,a refrigerator in his basement. It felt like a second apartment. There he was drinking some shots, smoking his cigarettes. He was very chatty. Sometimes it was too much. When I came back from shopping, holding 5 heavy bags in both hands, climbing the stairs to the 3rd floor, he would still ask me something or start a conversation, so I had to stop in the middle of the stairs. Sometimes I thought, come on man let me just go up. But he just wanted to chat a little that's why it never really bothered me. About his death: I came back from work and an ambulance was in front of our building. Another neighbor told me, because he was mentally confused he drank some kind of liquid what you use fora washing machine. He mixed it up with water, because the bottle was cold...He must have put it in the refrigerator thinking it's water

You just quoted it. Most people wont even respond because the quote seems obvious these days. Spoiler alert: Most of us think like that. We live in an age where every single person has access to near instantaneous communications across the entire world. Thus we hear the majority of what people think about topics such as war. It's no surprise that most people fear or hate the concept when actually pressed into the prospect of them being directly involved. The average person today does not hate the citizens living in a opposing foreign country, they hate the ideals and politicians. Back in the day the average person would only hear about the evil people in the evil enemy country, and so they would be impassioned to go to war. Those days are past. You hear quotes like "war is in our nature" or "war never changes", but the past four decades have been unlike any other in Human history. It's entirely possible that we have changed our nature and are too cynical to realize it
That's not true. There will always be people that will show humanity. Even if they get less and less. We are just lucky enough to not face such times for a very long time now. But they will come again. Sadly.

@@alexgrant191 Time cant heal the wounds of the millions of victims of this german soldiers actions. Goes for the german society as a whole, in the early 20 century. And i would advice not to use the "good old nazi tactic" of claiming they where only pawns in Hitlers game. "Only following orders".. We have heard it all to often. Yet not nearly enough, as many nazies wherent even prosecuted for their crimes against humanity.
This german soldier has to live the rest of his life with the consequences of his actions. And they where his actions. He was a murderer, who where part of the nazi machinery. They wherent prisoners of Hitler these people. They idolized Hitler, they handed him the power. Many of these soldiers fought in Berlin to the very end. Even the youth. Long after the war was lost.
Its true they feared the soviet soldiers more than the english ones. Because the soviet soldiers where ruthless.. Its why many germans commited suicide before the soviet army reached Berlin. They feared facing justice. Cowards. And i suspect its no different with this old nazi you seem to think time has healed the consequences of his actions.

I live in Germany.
And in July 2015 I moved to a new appartment. I had a neighbor he was 93 years old.
Apparently he confused the bottle with the bottle of water. So sad.
Edit:
Thanks for the thumbs up guys.
Apparently some of you find this story interesting and want to know more about him.
I cannot tell you more about his war experience because he wasn't talking about it often and I didn't want to ask, it could have made him feel uncomfortable.
But I can tell you more about him. He was very often in his basement because his wife was always yelling 😄
You could hear her even from downstairs.
About his death:
I came back from work and an ambulance was in front of our building.

No, he is right, true British blood is Anglo-Saxon blood, the true Germans also have Anglo-Saxon blood--hence why it's called the aryan race (the pure race) and why the government encouraged the procreation of blonde people with blue eyes.
And they didn't want war with Britain; they wanted to be allies.

That hit me, strong man. I respect any Vet. All my respect !
dude it’s gonna be sad when there’s no more WWII vets :(
yeah no one can recall WWII as vividly as veterans. i love them. they fight because they love their country. not because they hate their enemy
@MRivenda Yet what did they fight for?
then there's gonna be WW3 vets - us!
@@ameyrathore5583 that means we will be fighting against each other

Realistically, both would likely be killed then because each guys friend would think that they would kill each other and try to save their friend.

lee van cleef Acting as enemies gets us nowhere, a lot of the British and American people see the brotherhood with Russians. It is a shame our governments do not. We fought together brother.

@@FeIonKeller Yeah, of course. But that doesn't mean we should strive for war. It really is a bad thing.
@@FeIonKeller You're right. But war is different. Sometimes they have no choice. I bet a lot of Germans in WWII had no choice, but they were killed anyway. It's still a bad thing.

I mean killing a bunch of people. They're not all terrorists.

Did u see the German soldier’s reaction to “we are brothers”. It literally shocked him. Guy was stunned for about 3 seconds. Such forgiveness and rejoice in that one scene.
Yes.
I saw it too.

you said it wrong. The actual quote is "In war it doesn't matter whos right, but only who's left"

As well as the brutality they expected from the Russians, they feared communism. Also the Germans feared massive retaliation because of their invasion of Russia and the atrocities they committed against the Soviet peoples. (Which did happen.)
