  • @Controcetica

    I believe the Golden Needle was originally embedded in Malenia's flesh and broke during her fight with Radahn, which we can see depicted in some of the trailers. I think the only thing ambiguous about that is whether or not Malenia broke it on purpose in order to unleash the rot and win the fight. If so it doesn't change what happened, but it does cast Malenia is a worse light. I have never considered why the commander had it, but I believe it was broken by the time it was removed from Malenia's body.
    As for the bud off in the side room near Malenia's boss room, there seems to be two possibilities. The first is that this is Malenia's from when she bloomed against Radahn, and that when she was carried back to the Haligtree it was while still inside this flower/cocoon. The second option is that it is from one of Millicent's sisters, which is why their clothes are there. But, considering how big a deal it was for Millicent to bloom as she did, it seems unlikely that another of her sister's had already undergone a similar evolution.
    The Incantation Scarlet Aeonia, received from Malenia's Remembrance, makes it clear that Malenia has only bloomed twice. All item descriptions obtained from bosses and NPCs are written from the perspective that you have to kill the boss/NPC to get the item, and Scarlet Aeonia is no exception. Therefore the bloom in Malenia's side room cannot be from a third, offscreen bloom by Malenia. It is either her first flower, or belongs to one of her children/buds/clones.

    • @sunbrojeff9115
      @sunbrojeff9115 2 года назад +32

      Not all item descriptions from bosses have the current perspective. The fire giant's soul refers to him being a survivor in the present tense. It doesn't really change anything, and could be a translation thing (mistaking a form of "be" is easier than the whole line of Aeonia, which has both past and future tense. I don't know anything about Japanese though), but it's worth pointing out that the Aeonia description might not be completely set in stone.
      This is probably just cope. I really don't want to have to fight her again in a dlc
      More importantly, I'm pretty sure it's confirmed (can't remember where exactly, maybe Gowry said it) that the giant bloom in the Aeonian swamp was the site of Melania's first bloom, and the center of the swamp is a big plant. The bloom next to her room could show why Gowry is so obsessed with Millicent, though. Since there are clothes right next to it, it's possible whoever bloomed there died in the process, which might explain why Millicent is so special. You don't get anything from Millicent's bloom, which might mean she survived

    • @JennaJennaJen
      @JennaJennaJen 2 года назад +34

      @@sunbrojeff9115 Yeah, I think that "With the third bloom, she will become a true goddess" is when she turns into Malenia, Goddess of Rot. I don't know whether or not Radahn was Malenia's first bloom, but I suspect it was her second, as I suspect she knew what she was doing to take down Radahn.

    • @FunkyDeleriousPriest
      @FunkyDeleriousPriest Год назад +10

      I agree that the needle must have been dropped by Malenia. They're made by her brother, Miquella. No reason for him to give it to team Radahn.

    • @pn5705
      @pn5705 Год назад +20

      @@JennaJennaJen She couldn't match his strength, so she tossed aside her honor to match him. Thus, the Scarlet Rot bloomed. However, even then, "There would be no victor."
      This is confirmed by multiple NPCs, especially Ranni and Millicent.
      What I love about Radahn and Malenia's conflict is that Fromsoft wrote them in a way that makes it difficult to say who is outright stronger than the other. And even if one did have an advantage, the other had a counter.
      In terms of lore, both are heralded as the strongest demigods by those who followed them. And let us not forget that we've never seen either of them at their maximum--not exactly.
      Radahn was practically brain-dead, but just barely sane enough to keep the stars at bay and, of course, not harm his beloved horse, Leonard.
      Malenia seemingly remained in a comatose-like state following her fight with Radahn, that is until we meet her within Miquilla's 'Tree.'

      In Norse mythology, a Valkyrie is a female warrior who serves Odin, in searching for worthy warriors to bring to Valhalla and prepare for Ragnarok, and it is a whole group.
      The reason I bring this up, is who is to say that they only wanted to have one scarlet valkyrie? they could be trying to create multiple. Perhaps this situation has happened before, and that there is another scarlet valkyrie out there somewhere.

    I have a minor correction I'd like to make:
    I am inclined to believe that Commander O'Neill is aligned to Malenia, directly or through his service to Miquella. For one, his soldiers are the Exiles, not Redmanes. Secondly, his name means "Son of Neill", and we get or meet his dad as the sole survivor in Castle Sol. And for Commander Nial being able to visit the Haligtree is the only comfort he was allowed as part of his vigil.

    Another parallel between Millicent and Malenia would be that they both had someone carrying them to the Haligtree both literally and metaphorically speaking: Finley carried Malenia on her back to return her to the Haligtree and we gave Millicent the tools she needed to make this way - we gave her the needle to cure her, we gave her the arm she could use to defend herself. Sure she was able to do the most work on herself, but I really like to think about how both she and Malenia weren't forced to face their fate alone, since in a world as dark as the Lands between the camaraderie between individuals shines so much brighter.

    Millicent and Malenia's parallels are one of most compelling narratives in From Software's catalog. I can't help but admire them and how much they advocate for their sense of self: Malenia never yielding to the Rot unless she was truly pushed to her limits and Millicent who would rather die than accept the power of a Goddess.
    Also, you did such a great job of weaving together the nuances and fine details of the lore. Thank you, Chalice.

    Glad to finally see the full cosplay in action. You did a great job pulling off Millicent's look.
    It greatly pleases me to see more people explore Millicent's questline, and its intricacies as she is definitely one of the best characters in the game. One thing to note is that the Unalloyed Needle that Millicent uses is likely Malenia's original Unalloyed Needle. We see in the game cinematic intro that when Malenia stabbed herself and Radahn to infect him with her rot, there is a moment where she performs a sort of snapping motion as she digs the blade deeper into her flesh. This indicates that what she broke off was the needle that Miquella had specifically made for her, its presence needing to be removed to the Scarlet Aeonia blossom. Commander O'Neil could have found the Needle sometime after the fight, and has been using it to stave off his own deteriorating condition, as he is seen weaponizing the effects of the scarlet rot during the boss fight, at least unintentionally.
    Millicent's quest to return the Needle back to Malenia might actually have a more hopeful interpretation than we realize because of this. Considering that Malenia's "daughters" are very likely offshoots of herself, it is possible that they may also be formed with semblances or traces of their original's very being. The pride, and dignity Malenia had forsaken was her will of resistance towards the Scarlet Aeonia nurturing itself within her, something she seems to show little care for in our fight against her. Her daughters might possibly contain part of Malenia's essence within them, with Millicent probably representing something akin to her "mother's" sense of integrity. The fact she is the only one amongst the sisters who seems to develop her own personality could be part of why she is considered superior to her four siblings who blindly follow Gowry's orders. Even an earlier version of Millicent which possesses both of her arms invades the player with no rhyme or reason, something that greatly contrasts her personality as shown later on in the game, possibly because she has yet to develop her own sense of identity by the time we encounter her as an enemy. It is also interesting how Malenia's own prosthesis seems to fit Millicent perfectly as well, further supporting this idea that the two are more interconnected than meets the eye.
    The Aeonia we see at the bottom of the Halightree, and near the entrance to the boss room is probably that of another girl born from Malenia's blooming within Caelid, one who preceded Millicent. Said offshoot of Malenia had likely also embarked on a similar journey to find their creator, yet somehow met her end before the events of the game. All the sisters wear the same outfits as well, that being the Traveler's Clothes, which we can find before the previously mentioned flower. The description of this set does not specifically state that it belonged to Millicent, its design apparently serving as a typical choice in attire for women who embark on a journey to "confront" their fate. In fact, even Melina wears this very set of clothes, although that is an angle to explore for another time. This all further supports the idea that Millicent isn't the first of Gowry's attempts at making a Scarlet Valkyrie, another having been considered worthy prior to her.
    For reasons unknown Millicent iscompelled to find Malenia and learn more about her. Once she grows more aware of their connection to each other she becomes determined to return to Malenia “The will that was once her own. The dignity, the sense of self, that allowed her to resist the call of the scarlet rot.”. Said previously mentioned concepts being represented by the Unalloyed Needle. When siding with Millicent at the end of her questline, and receiving her needle in the process, it is noted that the item in question has been changed from the time we gave it to her. It now has a different coloration, and somehow “bears no trace of befouled blood, but is faintly moist with dew”. With the needle having been attached to Millicent’s body for so long it now seemingly contains traces of her flesh, and being within it.
    Millicents quest line at a first glance is extremely tragic. If looked at from a surface level perspective it would appear she has died without fulfilling her mission. The player now has the option to bring resolution to Millicent’s so long as they choose to follow the needles instructions, by returning it to Malenia. Seemingly a noble gesture, yet not a triumphant one considering we have to clash against Malenia to do so, and Millicent’s life was still lost. However, that might not be the entire story when taking into account all that was mentioned previously. Malenia is implied to still be alive even after we bested her in combat, as hinted by the description of the Scarlet Aeonia incantation. Not only does it speak about her in present tense, but also mentions she has yet to become “True Goddess” requiring a third bloom to achieve such a state. There is also the fact that once she is defeated the empyrean leaves behind a much larger Scarlet Aeonia flower where she once stood, a symbol of coming rebirth for her and her daughters.
    With the game indicating that she might somehow return, the player can now Return the Needle, as the prompt indicates. For making this choice, the game, or seemingly the flower, rewards the player with a different needle altogether, another one made by Miquella to fend off the influence of the outer gods. One that is incomplete, yet potentially capable of removing the hold of the Frenzied Flame. Could this be an exchange of sorts, one done in service of gratitude? How could someone who is gone express their appreciation for your actions? Though her body may have perished Millicent’s will appears to live on, within the Needle, the will that once belonged to Malenia. Having finally been returned to the place it was always meant to be, she will still live on once the empyrean is reborn anew.

    The thing about the needle is it's not just tied to rot: it's a tool of purification. If you follow the Frenzied Flame path, you can take the needle to the arena after defeating Placidusax and use it to cure yourself of the Frenzied Flame, allowing you to both save Melina *and* avoid the Frenzied Flame ending.
    I haven't delved deep enough yet to know how all this ties together; it might simply be that it's another thing the needle is capable of, but I'd be surprised if anything in this game was that simple.

    Another great in depth video by the queen of elden ring lore. I must say you really dig deep and give such a neat take on everything. Also you give a refreshing new take on stuff sometimes that I haven't heard from other people. Many of your theories have turned out to be my favorite theories that I now subscribe to. All that and you do it while looking good(quite often in cosplay), and while speaking in a soft-spoken voice to give that asmr-y vibe and you're very well spoken which is nice.
    Anyways I'm rambling. I just wanted to say I appreciate the amount of effort you put into these videos. It's apparent that you really put in a lot of time into research and editing and getting clothing for cosplay and amazing makeup. Even going as far as to hold your right eye closed(which, in my opinion, is the harder of the two to close)through the entirety if the video lmao 😂 I kept thinking "she's gonna open it now that the intros down, right?" Then 10 minutes in "okay, but surely she's gonna open it now though, yeah?" Hahaha, congrats on that one. So yeah... great channel, great videos, and lore dives. It's a wonderful channel you've got going and I am a big fan since I discovered it. You deserve more subscribers and I suspect you'll get them. Especially once the dlc comes out and you start doing vids on that, and people are searching more regularly and seeing you as a suggestion. Okay I'm done now, I'm writing too much, lol. Have a lovely day. Keep up the awesome vids! 👍

    She became my favorite NPC on my first playthrough. The line "I would rather trust you than simply continue to spoil from within" stuck with me. And then I played through her entire quest. She is unmatched as a side character across the Souls series.
    As for the flower outside of Malenia's room...that's the 2nd Valkyrie. One who, like Malenia, already blossomed once. Millicent was to be the 3rd. A Valkyrie needs to blossom 3 times to become the Goddess of Rot. Malenia blossoms the 2nd time when we fight her, and she dies. I theorise that Valkyries 2 and 3 were a replacement for Malenia, since she chose to slumber because she lost her brother, rather than become the Goddess. Everyone in the Lands Between is trying to place a different God on the throne. Malenia and Millicent were nothing more than puppets just like we are for Ranni or Shabriri or Goldmask or Fia or Dung Eater. There was a Miquella storyline cut from the game, likely to become a DLC. That questline would have likely given more context to the twins and potentially Rot and Millicent.

    I find interesting the fact that Millicent feels rather strongly about her mission to give back to Malenia her sense of self. She appears to not have been prompted from anyone in this.

    My initial guess for the traveler's set is that it's the remnants of experiment of "past" Millicents that went just as far
    BUT Gowry mentions:
    "In truth before her, I've never seen a bud with such superior quality"
    This could probably imply that 1) creating a "new" malenia is a global effort or 2) me being confused

    When I first played ER, I surprisingly came to notice Millicent's summon sign before Magma worm Makar boss fight, before obtaining the prosthesis, and just before the Rold lift to the mountaintops - she fought magnificently with the prosthesis arm and hand.. Also siding with Millicent is key to making an end game decision.

    There was a theory that Millicent was supposed to be an amnesiac Malenia (as a result of nuking Caelid with the Scarlet Rot) and that the story or quests would have us adventuring with her while she gets her memories back with each boss fight... only for her to turn out to be the game's super boss at the end of the Haligtree. The Malenia fight would have been a lot more emotional if that was the case IMO. It would also be a better explanation on how Mohg was able to kidnap Miquella and why Malenia was not tearing through his realm to get him back.

    Well done. You have a very pleasant and clear way of speaking.
    Since you asked for additional thoughts, here are two.
    - the additional flower is yet another "sister". Not really much evidence, but the flower is there regardless of how Milicent's quest ends, and the traveler's set lends more towards a valkyrie than to Milenia herself.
    - Gowery is something like a vassal for the imprisoned God of rot. I believe your likening of him to Shabriri is not inaccurate.
    I would love to see you take on Melina. Thanks again for the content!

    The Scarlet Aeonia spell states "Each time the scarlet flower blooms, Malenia's rot advances. It has bloomed twice already. With the third bloom, she will become a true goddess." She bloomed once in Caelid during the fight with Radahn and once outside her room.

    • @levitatedcat

      That's an interesting theory - it would make sense, considering the fact that the Haligtree is covered in scarlet rot, from the enemies to the branches of the tree itself.

    • @Pathoslogical

      That would mean she’d have bloomed a 3rd time and ascended to godhood during the player’s fight with her. I think it’s more realistic that the player fight is the second bloom, with the bloom outside the room being from a previous Valkyrie (an earlier person who did what Millicent now is doing)

    I mostly got your understanding of the background, but the travellers dress you find is white, while millicents is red/pink/whatever. I wondered as well, but I need to dig deeper into that.. it might be connected to miquella, but then again: he's in a cocoon, strangely. maybe the expansion will shed some light on that, if ever one comes out.
