Drafting then trading Lindros was the best thing to happen to Quebec/Colorado, along with Detroit blowing out Montreal and allowing Colorado to acquire Roy

I agree with you, without the Lindros trade...in this timeline I predict that Quebec goes to Colorado, but without all the pieces(Sandis Ozolish included) I am not certain they have enough 'firepower' to beat Detroit in playoffs that year. Lindros playing in New Jersey could also mean a longer career for #88, and possibly more Finals appearances for the Devils(96,97,99,00).

At first I thought "who do you pick in this draft ahead of Lindros?" and then you put down Forsberg and Niedermeyer and I thought, "yeah ... you're right."
Peter Forsberg was a true once in a generation type talent. He was not only an extremely prolific playmaker and scorer in general, but one of the most hard nosed and defensively responsible forwards of his era. A champion twice over, an Art Ross and Hart winner, and while his style of play probably led to more injuries than he would care for, when he was on he was as great a player as existed in the Dead Puck Era. Definitely the best player in his draft class.
Scott Niedermayer was an elite skater, a very smart and aware defenceman who was a great leader and always put his team first. Deserved his Norris, more crucially deserved his Cups and gold medals.
One does wonder what Lindros could have done had the last half of his career not been so mired with injuries though ...

    • @Roller11111
      @Roller11111 2 года назад +1

That was looking like it may happen but the Leafs management made further moves mid season with the Nordiques, where they sent I believe more draft picks for decent roster players effectively making Quebec worse and the Leafs better.
Once they realized how bad the initial trade was they lost more assets due to the embarrassment of losing out on Lindros, who at the time was supposed to be the next Gretzky/Lemieux level.
Arguably the worst moves in franchise history.

And also because Lou is much smarter than Clarkie. At that point, you'd be taking Lindros at #1 again in the Earth 32 redraft.

If everyone had that hindsight available to them, Philadelphia trades far fewer pieces for Lindros, and maybe doesn’t make the trade at all. That’s the whole point of these redrafts.
What would be reasonable nice to tell hockey coaches and management in 1991 is to take concussions seriously. Lindros is far from the only player to have his career, and by extension the entire sport, curtailed by unnecessary concussions.

My dad was a junior hockey coach in 1991, and I was 11. I remember how much he HATED Eric Lindros. He used to tell me that he was going to get destroyed physically in the NHL because he skated with his head down. He and my grandpa coached in the prairies for 40 years. We spent entire weekends talking and playing hockey. My dad was the one who discovered Sami Jo Small, she played on his boys midget team for three years in high school. He took a lot of heat for that from parents. I'm so proud that he never backed down. I got to run drills with her at practice, she was an amazing goalie. As an Avs fan since 95, I cannot argue with Forsberg at #1, but I think you also have to recognize that being a member of an extremely stacked Nordiques/Avalanche franchise really made a difference in Forsberg's career.
While their regular season output is actually quite comparable (both have less than 800 games with a similar p/gp), it's really in the playoffs where Forsberg's career was elevated to another level: 151 games, 171 pts, 2 Stanley Cups, 5 in the conference finals, 14 postseasons. Lindros' appearance in the 1997 finals is what we all remember, but the fact that he only participated in the postseason 6 times is a bit shocking. And that's where the competitiveness of the Avs in that time frame as a whole is the key difference.
So yeah I am actually not sure that you'd necessarily draft Forsberg before Lindros. In the end, the real irony is that Lindros could have had a far more prolific playoff career in a Nordiques/Avalanche shirt, and that is what he turned down by choice.

BTW, all the concussions Lindros suffered weren't from on ice play. Certainly one of the rumors or parts of all the rumors are true since Lindros was concussed in the locker room by somebody. This SOB obviously thought more of himself than the team and got exactly what he deserved. Personally, I like the Tocchet version....the ultimate team warrior and teamate.

They got lucky. That’s not genius. They didn’t understand that Lindros meant it when he said he wouldn’t play for Quebec. They drafted him expecting him to play fir them, not to create a year-long holdout that fortunately came out with a team sucker enough to give up all they did. All this because everyone really believed they had the next Gretzky in Eric Lindros. That’s the thing about hindsight - everyone involved has it, and in hindsight Lindros is an awesome forward but not close to being in the debate for GOAT. And that’s what they thought he would be in 1991.

I'm not a big Lindros fan, but he dominated the game in a way nobody else ever has. His combination of skill and physicality was truly unique. If you're using hindsight, take Lindros and tell him to keep his head up crossing the blueline. You can't tell Forsberg to not have funny shaped feet. Truth is, both would be right behind Wayne and Mario in the all time conversation without those injuries. Either would be a worthy 1st

I'm confused as to what you're confused about. This is a redraft done a few days ago of Shannon's current opinion of the order the players would have been picked if the draft was redone with knowledge of how the players' careers turned out. He only did the first 22 picks (aka the first round), but he didn't restrict himself to players who were originally selected in the first round. A sixth round pick is still a player who was draft eligible that year.

The draft is something of a crapshoot. If anyone could see the kind of careers Datsyuk and Zetterberg would have, both would have gone top 5 in their drafts instead of the late rounds, when teams are getting warm bodies for their affiliates. Heck, I think Ryan O’Reilly would have been a first rounder if teams knew what he would be, keeping in mind that first pick of the second round is pretty decent for a NHL caliber player. That said, I don’t know if the NHL has had any notorious draft busts like the NFL and NBA have seen.

Is this redraft predicated on the idea that we know how the players will perform, but don't know about the Lindros trade? Because Quebec 100% drafts Lindros every time knowing the haul they will get from Philly later on.
They literally get Forsberg and a bunch of other stuff, so why would they draft Forsberg knowing they're throwing away everything else they got in that trade?
