The biggest question I have is, where’s Betsy Kelso? They don’t even bring up the fact that Michael’s oldest daughter exists. They just swept her under the rug like they did Donna’s little sister.

Betsy or Brook. The half baked justification as to why Jacker & Fez split is just lazy writing and I wonder who came up with that decision because they obviously didn't know the series (or doesn't care). The industry is getting cheap & lazy for the sake of greed, more worried about PR by having to cater to all that PC/social nonsense instead of focusing on creating a good quality product... if it wasn't for them relying on the nostalgia that this spinoff is based on (like most low quality projects these days) it would be a repeat of That 80's Show.

Gwen is excellent, Leia has a lot of potential & Kelso has potential. What I liked was that they kept the formatting of the original (love the into & the little clips in between scenes) & the old cast is obviously fantastic. I agree that the other kids aren’t exactly hitting, but I’m going to give it a chance. I think they’ll grow into the roles. Also agree that they didn’t capture the 90s as good as they could have. Ozzy being gay could have been really cool with how secretive he would have needed to be in the 90s. Missed a huge chance there for not just comedic scenes, but sentimental ones too. Could have had it to where he only told Leia and done a lot with only one of them knowing.

It would have made so much more sense to set this in '97 or '98 with the kids having been 15 then, thus being born in '82 or '83. Or they could have had the kids be 13 or 14 in 1995 instead of 15 & 16, thus also being born in '82 or '83. That would have given the two couples more of a reasonable timeline to procreate.

There's a hole in the story story about Jackie. In season 1 of That 70's Show, Jackie was younger than all of the other friends. She was only like a freshman or a 10th grader. And even in the flashbacks memories they show Jackie as a littler girl than Michael when she says that she loved him. But at the end of the season they were taking a class pictures together and they had presumably all finished high school together, however Jackie would have been one or two years younger according to the first season.

Jackie according to the show wiki was born September 24th of 61 and is a year and a half younger than everyone else. Fez and Laurie were also missing with the van, so Jackie, Michael, Eric, Donna, and Hyde realized Fez and Laurie took the van. Cut away to Kitty, Red, and Bob in their living room saying, "I can't believe they missed their own graduation". The missing 5 show up, saying they had to get a ride home in a pig truck. Later, the 5 are cleaned up, and in the driveway ready to get into the car, dressed in graduation attire.Jackie does not have on a cap and gown, but they put a cap on Jackie's head for a photo Kitty is taking. (Just then Fez and Laurie run up in their same clothes from camping, announcing they got married so Fez could stay in the country. That's when Red has his heart attack). The hole, then is how does Jackie share an apartment with Fez and be looking for work like the rest of them are in subsequent episodes if she's still in high school? The nostalgia factor plays a big role here, so if you're watching as a fan of the original That 70's show you can add plus one star for that nostalgia factor. Otherwise the show, doesn't utilize enough of the 90's besides some stereotypical references which are thrown here and there. Honestly, it could be set in any era, but it just happens to be called The 90's show. The old familiar of reoccurring characters and especially being set in what looks like the original house of the Foreman's from the original including the living room, the kitchen, basement and the front yard is mind blowing. I find myself just wondering how were they able to preserve so much of the original set pieces or they just paid great attention to details. Unfortunately that's where the awe ends, since the dialogs, screenplay, storylines and jokes are really bland with few exceptions. As I said at the beginning, the nostalgia factor holds this together, but it doesn't get out of the shadow of the original. Potential is there though.

  • @unpluggedsongs3582
    @unpluggedsongs3582 Год назад +15

The first episode of That 90’s Show has a nostalgic intro from both Kitty and Red before Eric knocks at their front door. It appears as though he’s been away for quite some time and now works at a university as an adjunct professor teaching a “Religion of Star Wars” course. After his hugs and hellos, Donna walks in with a bunch of their belongings and gives a funny jab at Eric for essentially not helping unload the car, which Eric doesn’t seem to pay much attention to. It’s in this moment you may start to think this show has a chance of being good.
You meet the main character Leia, who is the daughter of Eric and Donna. She appears to have the facial features of Donna and the skinny, alien-like bone structure of her father Eric. It’s also hilarious to know Eric managed to talk Donna into naming their first child after a Star Wars character. Speaking of Star Wars, Eric still hasn’t given up his love for it. Aside from teaching Star Wars at a university, he also attempts to use the wisdom of those movies to influence his daughter throughout her entire life, which she obviously can’t stand.
Leia finds herself early in the episode walking around outside of her grandparent’s home before hearing the neighbor girl across the street, Gwen Runck. Gwen is listening to music and screaming the lyrics before turning to the window and seeing Leia standing there, looking at her. They have a short interaction that has you wondering if these two are going to be romantic lovers or best friends throughout the series. After a while, I’m to believe they’re just going to be friends, but I’ll let you decide for yourself.
The majority of the episode has Leia interacting with different kids from the area, only to find out that some of them have relations to characters from That 70’s Show. I enjoyed every interaction from the new and past characters in this episode and appreciated how all of the new kids on the show resemble those legendary characters in some way. I was a bit confused when seeing Nate, though. He gave off Kelso vibes, but you later find out something important that I won’t spoil. What I’m referencing has me to believe that there are many similarities with the characters, but this show also attempts to be its own thing.
Leia enjoys spending time with everyone and even starts to catch feelings for another. This has her wanting to stay in Point Place for the summer, rather than just for a day or two. Eric and Donna allow for her to stay with Kitty and Red and say their goodbyes at the end of the episode. You also get a little idea of what the kids are capable of, as they manage to throw a keg party and even find the old Candyland marijuana “stash” that was hidden away at the end of That 70’s Show.
Overall, the episode is entertaining and gives off the proper amount of nostalgia that’ll have you wanting more. The only gripe that I have with the pilot episode of That 90’s Show is how Donna feels like such a secondary character. From the beginning where Eric ignores her as she walks in with all the suit cases, to her lack of input into her daughter’s life over X amount of time, to even how she says goodbye to Leia at the end of the episode. I can’t tell if she’s scripted to be like that, or if Laura Prepon just doesn’t want to be there.

A brave move to reboot a classic show, but I think it’s working out well. As the first few episodes ticked by, the new teen actors characters have started to work some magic in their parts which happened so effortlessly in the original That 70s Show. The glue held in the pilot of That 90s Show thanks to the appearances of most of the original cast and of course Kitty and Red. The ever suffering emphatic Red and the loving, mothering Kitty gel perfectly with the new teen group too. A pity Danny Masterton’s character Steven Hyde (who reminded me of Jeff Lynne from ELO) is not a part of the sequel only for obvious reasons. Maybe they could have written in say Hyde’s daughter or son into the group, but I think this show can only get better and become as successful as the original series - so I do hope the producers give it a chance to allow future seasons to blossom into a classic set.

90's is not the only continuation show happening; just one of the newest. Season 2 of HIMYF has already brought Barney back in E1, and there's reportage of Ted and Tracy appearances to come. Robin re-appeared at the end of S1 of HIMYF, which inhabits the same universe, but a different bar than MacLaren's. The Captain and Becky appeared in multiple S1 episodes, too.
Compare and contrast with Velma, and you can see that beloved IPs need to be treated with respect, and given enough stand-alone qualities, in order to succeed with both the original audience, and a new audience. Velma is proving to be an object lesson in what NOT to do.

Even then, Kelso had moved to Chicago in the previous season right? So some time during 1978ish or early 1979 max. If they are all suppose to be 16ish in the 90's Jackie and Donna would have had to be pregnant right after the show ended if not before. Jackie at least dated Fez long enough for them to go on a couples trip together. (My guess a few months) that would mean Fez has a high chance of being Jay's Dad. That '70s Show was infamous for plot holes...like these never ending years where they Christmas multiple times in the "same year," Donna's sister who appeared for an episode...the actors aging way faster than their characters were supposed to. I certainly noticed these things in That '90s Show, but I think that they had to mess with the time line for the sake of the show (like usual). Leia's birthday is better celebrated before the very end of summer, and making Eric and Donna slightly older works better since the actors are hard to pass for their mid 30s. These inconsistencies were the only way to set the show as early as the mid-90s, and honestly, the feel for the decade began to wane by the end of it. I also think that they are planning to go for more seasons and don't want to make the "forever in the same year" mistake again.

That still leaves 1 month of gray area, but it is likely that Donnas water broke prematurely ( yes 1 mont is a large stretch but it is plausible) emplying that Leia being born late July early ( 1st week of August) August.

True, the writers should have definitely paid more attention to details about the ages and timelines. They should know by now that we 70’s Show fans are serious about this. Don’t just put out anything and think it’s good enough maybe we won’t notice. I do believe the show has potential overall though. The actors should binge watch That 70’s Show and develop their characters.

Jay actually doesn't need to be 16+ to drive. You only need to be 15 to drive in Wisconsin, which is even pointed out by the show when Leia is given a car for her 15th birthday. But this still doesn't entirely make sense. Unless Jackie was actually somehow pregnant at the end of that 70's show and didn't even know. But that wouldn't work with the timeline either unless Jackie cheated on Fez.

First off I will say that I am the biggest 70s show fan probably ever! I still fall asleep to it every night and know all the lines… I’ve watched each episode at least 100 times so I was really excited, however, I wasn’t expecting much… It’s a 50-50 for me… Half of it feels very corny and forced, and un organic, sort of reminding me of a nickelodeon kids show… And the other half of me appreciates some of the moments they did do a good job with, and the creative writers and actors all came together for a couple of laughs… The main character, Leah is great and her black friend with the short curly hair is pretty funny but the rest again reminds me of a kids TV show… I still love Red and Kitty though! Fes and Chong are great too! The gay boy, though… Bad… It’s way too forced and of course we all knew they were going to do something like that since every show has to now… But it’s not good… Actually, it’s pretty cringy..I hope they are able to find some chemistry with each other and get everything flowing. Otherwise it’s just another OK show….

When you add Eric's age mistake to the mix I begin to suspect the original intent was for the show to be set in 97-98 and the showrunners/studio made a last minute decision to roll it back to 95 to give the series more room to space out episodes before hitting 2000. Jay having his license all but clenches it.

I grew up in the 70s. Although I was in elementary school. So with that being said my daughter was born in 1989 and I was 20 years old. People didn’t admit to being gay, even if they were gay, especially guys. This just one of many incorrect things regarding this show. This is a show like so many today trying to be “politically correct” or “socially correct” so we got to add a gay guy and we got to add someone from every race. That 70s show was good because you could actually see them being friends. My group of friends were half white and the other half black but trust me that was not the norm in the 90s. Every one would see us and not what to think. You’re friends because you’ve got the same taste in music or you are all athletes etc. This cast just doesn’t look like they would ever hang out together. Call me old or racist or whatever I don’t really care but before you do you might look at my kids before you do. I’ve seen other comments and reactions from other people and they are saying the same thing without saying it.

Sum it up: scenery: yes. Characters: no.
This show feels very…Disney in the That 70s show house. It has some cringey scenes and I am not a fan of the main character Leia. Her character seems like they won’t have any development throughout the seasons.
The characters are cool on their own but together I would say they do not have great chemistry.
In the first episode Jackie’s lines seemed forced but still appreciated the nostalgia. Red still has his charming personality and kitty has not aged.
It seems like the writers were working on Jay’s character development for one scene then decided to stop and plummet his character.
The references to popular shows in the 90s were cute at first but I’m not a fan of that (friends, karate kid)
Why does it seem like Nate and Leia have more chemistry on the 10th episode than any other character? Including friendships and Jay and Leia’s relationship.
I think my expectations of this show was too high but I do not think I would be able to view Hyde the same if I were to rewatch it :(

Tv shows have a long history of time issues, for example in the show Tabatha her brother Adam is suddenly older though in Bewitched he's younger. Characters also grow up too fast when they are young, Alexander in Star Trek TNG for example but then seem to take a decade to get through high school like in Happy Days. Heck even the new Night Court has 32-year-old Melissa Rauch playing Harry's daughter who would have have been at most 30 if she was born immediately after the previous series ended in 1992. And don't get me started about Doctor Who, lol. As they say "relax, it's just a tv show"... :D

The episodes feel rushed and a lot of the dialog feels like they took Disney Channel writers and let them use "bad words," but I still liked it enough to finish the series.
I was kind of hoping Red was gonna be a pushover with a closer relationship with his granddaughter so it was going to bug Eric and we'd get a moment where Eric tells Leia how things were when he was growing up and Red gives the old "I never did that. If anything I spoiled you." I know that's very specific, but it feels like a lost opportunity for a relatable moment. Especially considering most fans of the original are that age now.
This show is desperate to be liked, and misses the high water mark by trying to cram character arcs into 18 minutes. Should've either had 25 episodes or just 10 1hr episodes so they could actually develope the characters.
Kinda feels like it was produced to have clips on tiktok or RUclips shorts.

It's been an, okay, ride... It seems like they're trying too hard to convince us it's the 90's. Growing up at that time, we didnt make a point of referencing it so often, we just lived it. I came for the nostalgia, but it isn't enough to keep viewers tuned in. Once you realize the characters you came to love take the back seat, you have to try to love the new kids on centre stage. If you can't learn to love it as it's own show, you probably won't tune in again. Maybe it will just take a while to get off the ground, and get it's feet planted. I hope it does. It has potential.
