Butcher’s innings was under less pressure but more constructed and Stokes’ was brave and ambitious. Both are amazing innings in ashes history.

By this point the ashes were already gone , yes it might of been a technically better ingings but it had nothing riding on it. Sir bens kept the ashes alive (for now) and with 1 wicket remaining it was quite bloody remarkable! The best of all time.

Hazlewood Cummins and Pattinson are an immense bowling attack too though. Cummins has a lower bowling average than McGrath and is world number one....Hazlewood and Pattinson both average 26. There’s not much difference really except Warne outdoes Lyon easily.

Mark Butcher innings was best reason is pretty much simple the bowlers he faced was legends. That was invincible team against which butcher played innings. My vote goes with butcher. But it doesn't mean Ben Stokes was normal. Chasing any score in fourth innings is hard nut to crack.

A fantastic knock for Mark Butcher back then. Invidious really to compare as any century to win a match, particularly against quality opposition bowling, requires great skill, some luck, fantastic concentration and belief that it can be done.

Ben Stokes has played an innings in the 3rd Ashes test which cannot be forgot for even decades b'coz he protected the run chase for England at a critical time and recovered them to a crusing victory.Mark Butcher intially constructed his memorable innings by scoring defensive shots and in the end phase started to encounter by smashing awesome sixes.

I would say Shakib is a better cricketer but Stokes is more of a big game player than Shakib. Shakib rarely wins Bangladesh games completely on his own but puts in consistent performances. Both top class players though.

Stokes going up and picking momentum! But he is not Shakib yet. Shakib is in the league with Kallis, Botham, Sobers, Jayasurya etc. Has been the no1 allrounder in all formats for nearly a decade or less. Even current ranking says Shakib is the best now. Shakib is No1 in ODIs, 2nd in T20s and 3rd in Test. Ben 2nd in ODIs, 2nd in Test and not even in top5 for T20s. Shakib hasnt played Test and T20s for a long time. Shakib is not appreciated, because he is not in a fancy team.
Stokes was under pressure throughout losing partners constantly and having to turn the strike over the way the managed his innings was simply magnificent.
Butch was such an elegant player i could watch him drive through the covers all day every day but he had decent partnerships and was in a flow without the pressure of losing partners and remember the series was also lost by that point and Stokes was batting to save the series against incredible odds.
Stokes was the better innings.

Stokes played unbelievable innings singlehandedly but butcher's knock is also one of great innings ever played in Ashes. Butcher scored 176* in 4th innings against one of the greatest bowling line-up (McGrath -Gilespie-Lee-Warne) in the history of cricket.

Butcher's innings was a man in 'the zone', but for mine the context makes Stokesey's innings the best. Gilchrist had made an attacking declaration with the Australians already having won the Ashes (to paraphrase Nasser Hussain, we just had to grab a win while the Australians were drunk from celebrating). Stokes had to graft for 70 deliveries, and then clicked up a gear both when Bairstow started playing some shots and again when wickets fell from the other end. And he did it with the Ashes on the line, after having bowled a heroic spell to keep Australia's total down.

Australians will protest that Stokesey was out, but the ball actually clipped his front pad in front of leg stump, and the ball tracker's predictive path showed it hitting leg - I thought it was clipping leg stump at best and the slog sweep shot probably suggested the same to Joel Parker. And the Australians had wasted their reviews!

At the time I don't think alot of ppl know but to beat the aussies was totally impossible especially for England. Butcher pulled of something unthinkable.
On the other hand stokes just changed the test level while it was dying. He's revived it. Both in their time and need are remarkable!

To say nothing of the drama of a 70+ run last wicket partnership in Stokes's case. The tension and drama of Headingley 2019 recalled the 1882 match at the Oval, where a spectator chewed through his umbrella handle.
Sorry but Butchers was better. Even if the series was already over. He did it against Warne, Lee, Mcrath and Gillespie. England still wanted to win to salvage some pride. England were also rubbish those days especially against Australia.
