Your seven string Ibanez has upgraded pickups . Stock were Dimarzio/Ibz . You are also muting the strings on the 7 String so it is hard to tell if they are noisier than on RG8 .

Most complain about the muddiness of the pickups but I dont know if its just my model but the pickups on mine are well balanced. As you know most 8 string pickups some strings cut through more than others. Mine is well balanced, sounds great. Seriously thinking about not switching them out for EMGs.
I guess the pickups may vary to a litte degree and also, our ears are all different and so is the rest of our equipment. I plan on swapping them out for some DiMarzios but right now, they serve me just fine. :D
Excellent playing man🤘🏻 I upgraded mine with Gotoh locking tuners, hipshot bridge and Fishman Fluence Moderns It's sounds like a $1000 guitar now. (Because it is 😂) Awesome review👍🏻
Thank you! Thats the way to go. Like I said in the video - some new tuners and pickups and it can keep up with way more higher end 8 strings. Cheers! Have fun. :D
I just like the low F#/F/E string sound. It was just a natural progression for me. Starting out on 6 strings, learning about 7 strings and then 8 strings. It just sounds massive imo. I prefer an aggressive tone that has bite, is tight, punchy and defined. For example the album "Dead Heart in a Dead World" by Nevermore or "Heartwork" by Carcass. Those albums have some DEADLY rhythm guitar tone imo.
weird, I bought the same guitar in 2022 just about a month ago, and my pickups are MUCH quieter. No hum like I heard on yours, which has me confused, because I don't think they've changed anything since they released this guitar - it could just be my amplifier. It does seem like build quality seems to vary somewhat - I'm noticing that the neck bolts on the back of mine are much rougher but the 3 way selector is a lot cleaner. Maybe they saw your video!!! I've yet to drop heavier strings onto mine yet (going to drop 10's on there and a 74 for the lowest), but I'm noticing with these lighter strings I get a LOT of fret buzz on the heaviest string. Heavier strings just might help with that though. I'm really impressed by the cleans that I can through this guitar tho. The pickups are pretty bright when you run them with a cleaner setting, which I wasn't expecting given just how muddy they sound with distortion. I do plan on dropping some higher output Seymour Duncans into mine in the next few years. I may also refinish the guitar down the line as a project. Despite the white / black color palette being a great look, I've noticed some dents already on the paint job that really bug me. I'll probably sand it down and stain it a light color to contrast the dark fretboard and finish it with a low gloss water-sealant to really get that natural wood look without it looking like it was fossilized in amber.
I think so too that the build quality is varying from model to model. I also plan on modding my model further down the line. Hope you liked the video. 😁
I just recently bought this same guitar to experiment with. I am having really bad buzzing/clanking from the 2 low strings. Almost all the way up the fret board even when fretted. Did you have this issue? If so, how did you resolve it? Thank you! Great channel and videos so far! I subscribed.
First of all - thanks for the kind words and subscription. Concerning your problem: Like I said in my video, the strings that come with this guitar are too thin and sloppy. So depending on your picking style, you can make the strings rattle quite easily. Try some thicker strings or adjust the strength of your picking.
Great video! Gave me nice insights for the guitar :) I was thinking about changing the pickups to a pair of emg 808s if I get the chance to purchase this guitar. Would surely elevate the sound a lot. Do you think I should go for that route or just buy a higher end one like "Legator N8FP"?
Glad you like the video. :) I guess if you buy an RG8 + EMG 808s, you would end up at the same price range as the Legator. At that point it becomes personal preference for you, for example if you want a fanned fretboard or not. I looked up the Legator and it has excellent components right from the start but its twice as expensive as the RG8. I think you can't go wrong with either of those badboys. :D
@@guylikesguitar You're very right sir :) I'm quite determined to buy the similar RGMS8 from Ibanez, since I kinda want the fanfret and coilsplit :D I'm just not so sure yet which one I'm gonna go with.
I have a black one with a dimarzio lead pickup and I just love the beast... Only bad thing is the cheap tuning pegs for sure but then I do bend the hell out of the strings doing pinch vibratos
@@guylikesguitar That's what it sounds like straight out of the box? Wow, that guitar chugs like a beast! Thanks for answering my question and for the very detailed review. I definitely plan on buying a RG8 now!😀🤘
I doubt that it will work. This guitar has a 27" scale length so even regular gauge strings have quite some tension. You would probably need an extremely light string (maybe 0.07) to tune it to a high a. I don't know if anyone tried this before. What you CAN do however is to tune down the F# to an E. So you will end up with 3 E strings on this guitar.
Even though I just started playing guitar recently lol, I've been recently thinking of wanting to try out a 7 and especially an 8 String guitar out for experimentation. Love the heavy sounds of them and been wanting to try some Meshuggah riffs for quite a bit now . And eventually to get a 7 string as well to play songs from Trivium, Korn etc . The 7 string bkack Jackson (think it was the JS22-7), the price of that for a 7 string looks really good . Same with this Ibanez 8 string, look really damn good for the price considering i don't got the money to spend thousands of dollars on one guitar. I'm hoping to get both of these soon.
@@guylikesguitar I definitely will struggle on them for sure lol 🤣. But man do they look so fun to master . Awesome review btw. Definitely selling me on this more. That showing of the distorted parts definitely sold me on it. The fact it's the out of the box experience made it even better. I use the Spark amp so I got the huge amounts of customizing with the app on my phone for the effects and stuff which will have me doing alot of the experimentation there lol Lovin the spark amp as my first ever amp. Dream come true amp that I've wanted for so long , it's practically one of the reasons I started guitar. Very intrigued to see how the 7 and especially 8 strings sound on it (also the more guitars I have for different tuning settings the better lol got so many songs on my list to practice to always keep me busy but I'm going through so many times of going between Standard E to , drop C to Drop B, D etc on my 2 6 string guitars lol have a 4 string bass well to switch back and forth). Any tips on how to get that mean famous growl tone out of the lower strings ? Where it's little high but low at the same time ( not sure if I'm describing it right lol)
Thank you! 🙏🏻 What do you mean with links? This song is my own creation. You can watch the playthrough video of this song on its own on my channel. Cheers. :)
@@guylikesguitar yes 🙌 i did read the description that you composed the track and its beautiful. By links i meant Spotify or Apple Music link to the mp3 of song so that i can hear the audio. Nevertheless, great composition and review. 🙌👍🏼
isn't in a little redundant to use a DI box if you're already DI'ing straight into your interface? i mean if you're using an amp sim and an IR then you already have the raw unprocessed wav for each track. a DI box is for using one output straight into the interface and the other into an actual amp thats either mic'd or DI'd. your DI box in this instance it essentially useless. not hating or talking shit just wondering why you ran it that way. nice video. thanks!
No problem. Actually this is still a topic of debate to this day. Years ago, I watched a video by SMG (Glen Fricker) talking about needing a DI Box in front of a USB interface or not. He came to the conclusion, that it is not necessary. Shortly after that, I saw an Instagram post from Joey Sturgis saying the complete opposite. He said that the analog-digital-converters in smaller interfaces like mine are usually cheap and not of high quality. He came to the conclusion that having a DI Box in front of it will result in much better conversion. So I gave it a shot and tested it out. My experience is this: Does one really need a DI Box to record guitar digitally? No. Does it positively affect the quality of the DI? In my opinion yes. It is not a huge difference but to my ears, the DIs now sound a little bit more "high-fidelity". Everyone needs to decide for themselves whether or not he needs one. I hope that this answers your question. 😄 Cheers and thank you! 🙏🏻
Thank you! I am using 10 to 74 D'addarios right now and the lowest string went through the tuner without problems. I recently ordered an 80-gauge low string because I want to try some drop E stuff. When I restring the guitar in next weeks or so, I'll let you know of it fits or not. :)
Quick Update: 0.74" is the smallest string without drilling a bigger hole into the tuner. I recently strung it with a 0.80" string and I needed to widen the hole on the tuner. It wasn't difficult and the 80 gauge string feels a lot better imo.
If someone stayed to the end of your video its extremely unlikely they will dislike or wont sub. Also there isnt any logic in giving people permission to do such. Don't add the negative bit at the end its a weird send off. Otherwise it was a perfect review, good job.
Thank you! 🙏🏻 Unfortunately no. It is just here in this video. I'm just starting out with all of this. Maybe in the future, I will upload it to Spotify. You could always download the audio of my video and turn it into an mp3. Btw: More break knuckle stuff is on its way. 😉
I'm very tempted to buy this guitar but I really want to get one with emg pickups frankly wonder if ltd has a eclipse model that matches my eclipse ec407fm 7 string with emgs that would be dope
Haha thanks man. That was my whole approach in making this video. Too many reviewers of this guitar just playing 0-0-0-0 on the lowest string. I wanted to show as much different things as possible.
My first 8 string was an RG8 and it made me think i hated 8 strings. Terrible action. Hard to get set up to a playable degree. Pickups are reallllly bad in my opinion. Somehow shrill and muddy at the same time. Thankfully I gave 8 string another chance with Schecter and had a much better experience.
Mine was rg8 too, a black one made in 2014. But action was good and it was staying in tune forever. Sadly, pickups were really muddy but neck was so comfortable. I sold it a year ago, I still regret selling it.
I appreciate your enthusiasm but I don't have tabs for it. Maybe in the far future but it is not planned right now, sorry. Also there should be some easier 8 string songs to learn. Try Diamond Eyes by Deftones. Cheers. 🤘🏻
Bought the guitar but action was record high, i wonder why. Gonna lower the strings for shure. Its unplayable compared to.my 6 string.. pickup compared to dimarzio is low end compared to high end.
The action on guitars within this pricerange is basically gambling. Mine wasn't record high but it also needed some fair amount of adjusting. I want to upgrade mine with Dimarzio Pickups also. Seems like a good fit.
Not the higher strings. Those were fine. But the low B and F# string were too floppy for my taste as I tend to dig in a lot. If I remember correctly, the low F# string was a 65 and on my Ibanez 7 string, my low Bb string is a 64 haha. Currently I am experimenting with different gauges. Right now I am using 9 to 46 for the regular strings, a 59 for the low B and an 80 for the low F# (tuned to a low E). This is pretty much perfect now.
@@mat3441 String gauge is very subjective. Some people like thicker strings and some like thinner. It all depends on your playing style. Do you really play with force like Hetfield - use thicker strings. If you have a softer playing style go for thinner strings. On this guitar right now I use a 9 to 42 for the regular 6 strings, a 60 for the 7th string (tuned to A) and a 74 for the 8th string (tuned to E). Cheers!
Ibanez used to have great guitars 10 years ago. Now they sound/feel like shit unless you swap pickups, change the bridge, tuners, basically every part.
I think it is a matter of price-range. The situation would be similar with a cheap LTD or Jackson or whatever. That's the reason I made the song for the intro. That's just the guitar out of the box and the song turned out alright, I guess. 😄
I play a lot worse than you, lol. If it could be said that "you're not good", but if you aren't, i didnt notice. As long as i can slam 2 Ramones chords together, I'm happy.

weird, I bought the same guitar in 2022 just about a month ago, and my pickups are MUCH quieter.

Great review. One of the best I've seen overall, and the best for this guitar.
Awesome! :D
I have a black one with a dimarzio lead pickup and I just love the beast... Only bad thing is the cheap tuning pegs for sure but then I do bend the hell out of the strings doing pinch vibratos
What aftermarket tuners would you consider installing?
Thank you so much for the review. What is the exact model of your 7-string RG?
Thank you! It is called Ibanez RG Premium 827QMZ-RDT. But I think they don't make these particular Premiums any more.
@@guylikesguitar anyway it's absolutely luxurious thing. Thank you so much for your answer
@@Evolji228 You're welcome. 😄
@GuyLikesGuitar What tuning are you in for the playthrough (the song you wrote)? Awesome playing, by the way.🙂
Thank you! 😁
Standard 8-string tuning. Like straight out of the box. :)
@@guylikesguitar That's what it sounds like straight out of the box? Wow, that guitar chugs like a beast! Thanks for answering my question and for the very detailed review. I definitely plan on buying a RG8 now!😀🤘
@@AndySquid1999 Yeah man. Pretty good bang for your buck. Check out the sound demos later in the video for different genres. 😁
Cool vid man! Is it possible to switch the low F# to high A without too much Hassle? That would open up chordal possibilities.
@@guylikesguitar thanks man! I don't think this is for me then, all the best!
@@dennoow Don't worry, man. Cheers! 🙋🏻♂️
Awesome man. Good luck with those Meshuggah riffs. I still need to get into those. 😄
Awesome ❤️❤️❤️ any links to the clean guitar track being played in the intro.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
What do you mean with links? This song is my own creation. You can watch the playthrough video of this song on its own on my channel. Cheers. :)
@@guylikesguitar yes 🙌 i did read the description that you composed the track and its beautiful.
By links i meant Spotify or Apple Music link to the mp3 of song so that i can hear the audio.
Nevertheless, great composition and review. 🙌👍🏼
@@yamahatrbx5053 Oh now I understand. No, I don't have it on those platforms. Only here on RUclips. :)
massive chugga chugga!
isn't in a little redundant to use a DI box if you're already DI'ing straight into your interface? i mean if you're using an amp sim and an IR then you already have the raw unprocessed wav for each track. a DI box is for using one output straight into the interface and the other into an actual amp thats either mic'd or DI'd. your DI box in this instance it essentially useless. not hating or talking shit just wondering why you ran it that way. nice video. thanks!
Cheers and thank you! 🙏🏻
I think your tone in the beginning song was really killer. Also killer was the song you played in the 7-string Metal section. What was that?
Thank you! 😁 🙏🏻 The song in the 7-string Metal section was Carcass - No Love Lost. Cheers!
@@guylikesguitar Thank you so much. It's been ages since I heard that song; thought it sounded familiar!
Carcass . Band
Thanks for the insightful review! Do you know the maximum string gauge on the F# without having to drill into the tuner?
@@guylikesguitar Thanks a lot - very helpful to know!
@@guylikesguitar
Were you using daddario nyxl’s? I’m pretty sure their 70’s & up have tapered ends to prevent that
@@reneebear3641 I was using the regular D'addarios. Good to know that the NYXL have tapered ends. I'm about to try them out in the future.
If someone stayed to the end of your video its extremely unlikely they will dislike or wont sub. Also there isnt any logic in giving people permission to do such. Don't add the negative bit at the end its a weird send off. Otherwise it was a perfect review, good job.
Thanks man. 😁
Don't worry, I mainly did this negative stuff at the end simply as a joke.
God damn tell me that song is on Spotify I want to add it to my Playlist straight fucking 🔥 damn that was break knuckle hard
Thank you! 🙏🏻 Unfortunately no. It is just here in this video. I'm just starting out with all of this. Maybe in the future, I will upload it to Spotify. You could always download the audio of my video and turn it into an mp3.
Btw: More break knuckle stuff is on its way. 😉
@@guylikesguitar bro I don't think it even cost anything to put your music on Spotify I haven't looked but I'm pretty sure it doesn't
I'm very tempted to buy this guitar but I really want to get one with emg pickups frankly wonder if ltd has a eclipse model that matches my eclipse ec407fm 7 string with emgs that would be dope
Thanks for not playing mindless crap.
Haha thanks man. That was my whole approach in making this video. Too many reviewers of this guitar just playing 0-0-0-0 on the lowest string. I wanted to show as much different things as possible.
Is this the same one sold on Amazon?
I got it from Thomann but it is also available on Amazon.
Same. Shocking.. way high action. Worse than the 150 dollar big sound gitar in 1992
Hey can i have Playthrough Tabs? Im new to 8 string guitar. Always play 6 string :)
I appreciate your enthusiasm but I don't have tabs for it. Maybe in the far future but it is not planned right now, sorry. Also there should be some easier 8 string songs to learn. Try Diamond Eyes by Deftones. Cheers. 🤘🏻
@@guylikesguitar Ok thankyou!
Did you immediately have to change strings? the stock ones seem so floppy?
Not the higher strings. Those were fine. But the low B and F# string were too floppy for my taste as I tend to dig in a lot. If I remember correctly, the low F# string was a 65 and on my Ibanez 7 string, my low Bb string is a 64 haha.
Currently I am experimenting with different gauges. Right now I am using 9 to 46 for the regular strings, a 59 for the low B and an 80 for the low F# (tuned to a low E). This is pretty much perfect now.
@@guylikesguitar SWEET. THAT IS WHAT i HAVE ORDERED FOR MINE! THANKS MAN!

@@guylikesguitar Thank you. I will wait. I like this very much.
Bro which audio interface do you use?
Hi. I explain my whole signal chain in the video at minute 15:21. Cheers!
Oohk. Ty bro.
Thak you for the review, but why did you changed the strings ?
Thank you! I explained it in the video. The strings that came stock with this guitar were too thin for me. Cheers! :)
@@guylikesguitar okay and which strings do you recommend ?
@@mat3441 String gauge is very subjective. Some people like thicker strings and some like thinner. It all depends on your playing style. Do you really play with force like Hetfield - use thicker strings. If you have a softer playing style go for thinner strings. On this guitar right now I use a 9 to 42 for the regular 6 strings, a 60 for the 7th string (tuned to A) and a 74 for the 8th string (tuned to E). Cheers!
@@guylikesguitar Thanks, it will be my first guitar so i'm gonna try something not too thick
Might get one and put tosins pickups in it 😅 budget larada
Awesome idea. Some white Fishman pickups would look nicely in this guitar.
Animals As Leaders, cool.
The paint is pretty bad, I have seen GIO with MUCH better paint.
Good Review and nice playing man.
Thank you. Like I said in the video. At this pricepoint it is basically gambling. Might get a pretty one but also might get an ugly one.
Are u German?
I am. You too?
@@guylikesguitar Ja tatsächlich bin ich es auch
I play a lot worse than you, lol. If it could be said that "you're not good", but if you aren't, i didnt notice. As long as i can slam 2 Ramones chords together, I'm happy.
Thx.
