Very true. The original reason people loved bands like Meshuggah was that they were unique. I think too many musicians take the safe route by wanting to sound like their idols which is a reasonable place to start but if you don’t keep going down that road to find a sound that that really sounds like you and songwriting style that expresses what you uniquely bring to the music world then it gets far too homogenous and boring. I’m not saying be unique or weird for the sake of it because that just leads to novelty acts but find something expresses who you are are purely as possible.

Both offer a plethora of options but you aren’t locked down as much in bias, and to the majority of players who are not tone or mix savy, it’s a lot easier to dial something in or use some of the great presets in a NDSP plug in. With bias I think it requires a little more knowledge and willingness to work with it and experiment to get something beyond the scope of what most plugins can offer you. It’s like comparing daws, they are all fundamentally the same but many would argue certain ones are better once you get over that learning hurdle.
awesome video. One thing you should address tho, that goes beyond 8 strings but all type of guitar playing, is the difference between solo guitar tone vs in the mix tone. Amazing video! I play a 7 string but have always been confused as to the “why” of certain adjustments to make the tones I want. This was super helpful - thank you! 🤘🏾😎
Sounds amazing. Everyone has their own approach. I like using the EQ before the boost for the pre-amp (2 in 1 pedals work nicely as well, it’s just a matter of finding one that works well in tandem) and compression I use in different ways. I’ve noticed in active pickups, since they already have a lot of compression going on (along with distortion already having lots of compression naturally, which is why I’ve always loved passive pickups) but the only time I really use it more than it needs is when…well it actually needs it when I’m creating a tone with drop/transpose for stupid low tunings. But a post EQ is exactly what I love to find sculpt it afterwords as well.
I actually learned a few things from this. I got my guitars sounding a little cleaner for the album I released earlier this year, but couldn't really figure out how to get *that* 8 string sound. However, I am going in the opposite direction for my next 8 string project. I have a super thick and kinda muddy tone to get a wall of noise, but then I split the humbucker to get more articulation for certain parts. Absolutely filthy tone, but that's what I'm going for, just trying to be as heavy as possible. XD
something else worth mentioning is the height of ur pickups, it really cleans up the note for note definition especially on 7 and 8 strings where the strings are getting alot thicker, been playing around with a double drop c tuning that uses gauge 100 strings and this was one of the main ways i managed to clean up the tone.
i love this breakdown, in addition I believe a lot of tone comes down to the player as well! I had a guitar teacher years ago who made my $150 guitar sound like a $1200 guitar simply because he was very very skilled!
This video provided great value, I really appreciate it. The new Bias FX 2 update is amazing and those new IRs really improve the quality of the tones. It was maybe still too less gain (another drive pedal can handle that) but man it sounded so much better then every plugin in I tried so far.. so alive… I just was bored and wanted to play a little bit but now I think i will explore it further! Has anyone experience with 8 string guitar and bass amps? Is that a thing?
I have one question. I feel that in the full mix this tone sounds amazing. My mind was blown when I first heard that. But when the guitar was just played by itself I did not love the tone. So do you have any recommendations on finding the balance or do I just need to suck it up and find what is best for the mix even if the tone by itself is not my favorite?
Tone in the mix is very different from a tone that you just jam on. Once you mix it with the rest of the track, it’s done so in a very surgical and specialised way. Finding the balance between the two and then going the rest of the way towards “mix tone” with some extra post production is usually my go to
Maybe it's just a coincidence but I still hear all of the popping and clicking while playing the guitar that I had while using BIAS years ago. I don't get this behavior in any other plug-in, even adjusting the sample rate to not obliterate my PC's resources. I don't know why anyone would hand them their money with that behavior not being corrected after all of these years.
Any chance you would do this kind of tone through the Quad Cortex? I honestly bought one after watching your vids, and would be awesome to have a tone on there! I primarily play 8 strings, so I was super excited to click on this vid once i saw the title haha.
Would setting any amp/preamp/plug settings at 5/halfway be a good starting point? And set the boost to traditional settings first (around max tone, 0 or barely on gain/drive, max volume) before or after dailing the amp and eq?
That guitar is incredible but wld be great to hear it thru real amp or a top end profiler. Sonic Drive Studios uses that guitar w real amps through IRs and it sounds massive!! BiasFX has that colder digital tone to me but you did a decent job w software. 🤘
One more thing, can you do a video on guitar set up? If you did it I'll have to rewatch it. I've been here for a while love what you do! But i havent been watching guitar videos in a bit.
Thank you for the knowledge big dawg. 🤟🔥 Do you happen to use Helix/HX Stomp products? Id be really intrigued to see a video of the glorious 8 string tones you can get with one of them bad boys. 🤷♂️
These settings seem to work for the particular guitar you're using with the pickup etc. I noticed that when I'm trying to dial and tones. Using similar plugin and similar methods. I'm still really having too much low end n i'm not getting that tight tone. I have been trying to experiment using different cabinets. Different impulse responses. And i'm even when as far as purchasing impulse responses that were mixed and mastered 7 and eight string guitar.
i dont have an 8 string but i use a whammy pedals or the transposers to get to low notes and i want to get a baritone 7 string to tune down like an 8 string just like invent animate, and i noticed that in those options it sounds different and i need to do different stuff to make those options sound the way i want and sometimes i feel it is harder than an actual 8 string

Amazing! How i wish my hd500x sounded with my frfr. Its good but not like this. Also sometimes use a mooer preamp pedal (5153) with a precision drive. Would you recommend the attack knob being max or near max for f or lower? Or for any tuning lower that B?
bro, I have been wondering why my low tune sounds so bad. Even going down to just drop G. This makes so much sense. A godsend. Especially when I don't see many guides using just Bias FX.
Puzzled as to why you go to the trouble of buying an Ibanez M80M (tuned F standard - down one semi-tone from an 8-string guitar in F# standard) to then tune it a la Tosin Abasi (Drop E). Wouldn't it make more sense to leave it in the factory Meshuggah tuning?
@@aegistechreviews7410 Maybe because I prefer a big texture sound with growl in lows like Spiritbox or Erra. But I disagree about pickups. At least output means a lot, preamp saturation is depending on that. Pickup height also determines how it sounds. On this clip the guitar sounds very clean in terms of saturation and without balls for my taste considering it's an 8-string, which can kick the shit out.
@@qerzuk and thats something many people dont know about getting that heavy "djent" like sound its the syncopation of guitars, bass and drums that give it that heaviness
The scale length of an 8 string is the most important part imo. A longer scale guitar will have a closer relative pickup position to the bridge, making the tone a lot brighter. A 27.5 inch 8 string will sound better than a 26.5 with the highest quality of hand wound pickups
Ah yes. Buy an 8 string guitar. Drop tune it to play low and heavy. Then cut ALL the low frequencies because they end up sounding like trash. Mission accomplished! :)
Try this the next time you dial in your 8 string guitar tone.

Late comment i know. But yep. Knowing why makes all the difference. Well done - you certainly helped me.
Would setting any amp/preamp/plug settings at 5/halfway be a good starting point? And set the boost to traditional settings first (around max tone, 0 or barely on gain/drive, max volume) before or after dailing the amp and eq?
Great video. Thanks
Great, I downloaded the updated version of Bias FX2 and now it won't load and is stuck in the loading screen forever... awesome.
What is your neck length and string gauge ?
Thank you for the knowledge big dawg. 🤟🔥
Do you happen to use Helix/HX Stomp products? Id be really intrigued to see a video of the glorious 8 string tones you can get with one of them bad boys. 🤷♂️
These settings seem to work for the particular guitar you're using with the pickup etc. I noticed that when I'm trying to dial and tones. Using similar plugin and similar methods. I'm still really having too much low end n i'm not getting that tight tone.
I have been trying to experiment using different cabinets. Different impulse responses. And i'm even when as far as purchasing impulse responses that were mixed and mastered 7 and eight string guitar.
Mate you look like you have just woken up from a bender !!! Sick vid as usual and noice guitar 🎸
i dont have an 8 string but i use a whammy pedals or the transposers to get to low notes and i want to get a baritone 7 string to tune down like an 8 string just like invent animate, and i noticed that in those options it sounds different and i need to do different stuff to make those options sound the way i want and sometimes i feel it is harder than an actual 8 string
Can someone explain to me how to get amps and plug a guitar into your computer? I feel like I got so left behind with this stuff
EQ with some head can do really good additions to any guitar tone of any style, EQ it's the best friend for musisians :'3
Going to try some of this.
Hey dude! Did you double track this? Or is there some stereo magic that I’m missing..? It’s so wide.
Is this amp also included in the "Standard" BIAS FX 2 version?
I recently. a strandberg metal 8 and I really struggle to create a tone that satisfies me!
This video is very interesting but I can't find your preset on tonecloud!
It's possible?
It doesn't have a trem, though? just a locking nut and a bridge that looks like their version of a trem
So what if I have an amp? 🤔
Do you have a Fortin 33 pedal? How does that do with this amp, if you do?
That bias fx2 was for iOs too?
I don’t even have an 8 string. But I might get a mandolin at some point if that counts as an 8 string guitar.
Love your tone man just wondering what string gauges/brand you are running on the m80 I'm having a hard time finding strings that actually work with the scale length!
Thanks
He uses and is endorsed by The String Source. AMAZING strings. I've been using them for about 2 years straight now bc of Keyan actually! For the guitar here, he says he has an 80 on for drop E 🤙
Amazing! How i wish my hd500x sounded with my frfr. Its good but not like this. Also sometimes use a mooer preamp pedal (5153) with a precision drive.
Would you recommend the attack knob being max or near max for f or lower? Or for any tuning lower that B?
I love my m80m and kemper 😩❤️
More treble. More mids. Less bass. Way less gain. Add a clean boost in front. That should do it. 😄
Same guitar same plugin a lot different tone 😅 wich strings do you use?
bro, I have been wondering why my low tune sounds so bad. Even going down to just drop G. This makes so much sense. A godsend. Especially when I don't see many guides using just Bias FX.
YOURGOOD...
Puzzled as to why you go to the trouble of buying an Ibanez M80M (tuned F standard - down one semi-tone from an 8-string guitar in F# standard) to then tune it a la Tosin Abasi (Drop E). Wouldn't it make more sense to leave it in the factory Meshuggah tuning?
is thath an m8m?
What track is that
... what tuning
all i got was 'moves' and 'scalpel'
My 8 string guitar tone doesn't suck, HAH!
But my 7 string tone does.
*sad 7 string peasant noises*
This is missing the biggest part of heavy guitar tone imo, the cab! A bad cabinet or cab sim will ruin even the nicest amps and modelers.
I found it sounding weak, poor and boring in the mix for my taste. Don't know if this is cuz of pickups or not.
pickups make barely any difference at all. It's probably just not EQd to your preference because to me it sounds great.
@@SOYUSE spiritbox tone is carried by the bass guitar, tho. It's hell weak without it.
@@qerzuk understood.
Keyan please ditch the multiple sibscribe bell notifications throughout the video
Key: don’t use EMG 808’s they sound like mudbutt
My 8 string tone sucks? Bro I dont even got one dawg😢
This is a lie, cause the intro does not sounds like the guitar in the last minutes. You modifie a lot the sound in post production
erm actually its not a tremolo its just a double locking hardtail bridge 🤓
Can you explain how to get a Sleep Token type tone?
Ah yes. Buy an 8 string guitar. Drop tune it to play low and heavy. Then cut ALL the low frequencies because they end up sounding like trash. Mission accomplished! :)
