Me too. I think that's one of the reasons emancipation of Mimi was so successful. Clear in the pocket lead vocals and kept the whispering for the background.
+M.C. Lamb Completely disagree about the ease part. Mariah just opens her mouth and flows. Mariah belts in her prime were SOOO effortless. And technique? Mariah is a vocal technician and can run up and down the scales with that voice. But being unbiased, Aretha definitely has more power and soul with her voice.
Damian Jo Don't worry Mariah's 15-16 years fans who prefer girlish voices and people who never have more than 30- years old can't understand the fact that Aretha's voice is more feminine and she can sing jazz and she can improvises, something Mariah could never do!

Wow I didn't know Mariah had so many G5's/G#5's to be honest...but I just love the tone of Mariah's. I do believe they definitely aren't as effortless as Aretha's but Aretha's sound less appealing to my ear. I absolutely love the G5's in "Outside" from the Butterfly album! Those are probably my favorite.
The difference is Carey belts knowingly in her full voice, whereas Aretha knowingly mixes her voice. I can mix my voice too and I'm a guy yet I obviously can't belt it in full like Carey.
Mariah has a unique placement for her belting that makes her belts sound not very powerful or piercing, but very warm and pleasant. She does this on purpose to keep her "angel-like" style. This is very difficult to achieve and in fact I've never seen anybody but Mariah doing it, especialy in the upper range. Aretha has a more traditional placement that gives a lot of power to the belting and so she sounds more piercing, which for some people is more unpleasant.
WOW! THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING! Aretha's G5's are so damn effortless! It's just incredible. Her voice was made for belting and sustaining those high notes so well! When it comes to Mariah's voice, in my own opinion, the sound is kinda brighter and has more resonance, but it doesn't sound effortless. Anyways, both are amazing. Two living legends. Great video, keep the good work ;)
@@joanmaciel6178 I guess Aretha is more effortless in upper belting, you can see some efforts or full efforts when she did the upper belting. I guess that's why Mariah's belting sounds fuller
the beauty about Mariah's voice is that she doesnt have to yell to reach these notes..no pushing, just stable larynx singing..just effortlessly sliding back n forth between chest n head voice..pure belting quality hehe..that is why her g5 to a5 almost doesnt sound like a very high note due to the quality of sound retained throughout..but in reality they r exceptionally high notes hehe..but Aretha's powerful mix is very fitting to her style of singing as well as her songs.
I LOVE both Mariah Carey's AND Aretha Franklin's voices!!! They each have different vocal-types, as well as their ranges. Neither one is better than the other - they're BOTH great vocalists, counted among the best of ALL time.
I'll always have Aretha at the top of my list. However, I gotta give it to Mariah this time around. Although aunt Ree's G5's were deadly on stage, Mariah has this sweet and tender feeling about her range, even tho they're high powerful notes.
+Pepita Snow Mariah wasn't too far behind in technique even at high belting. The timbre of her voice thinned after F5, but still sounded resonant and bright. They were a bit on the heady side though, which isn't necessarily poor technique, but Mariah NEEDED a heady mix to be able to belt at this range (With healthy technique nonetheless), while Aretha used a somewhat more even blend i think. I don't think this is really Mariah's "optimal" belting range though.
+Pepita Snow I don't think Aretha's technique is better, they are just different, the main difference is that Aretha is using more of a heady mix voice wich gives a lot of ease but I think it gives a not very pleasant sound (for me), and Mariah's more on the chest.
MR R Pff i know so many people and when they were 14-15 years old all of them prefered Mariah's girlish voices and now when they have more than 30 years old all of them think that Whitney's and Aretha's are much better because now they prefer more feminine and more natural voices!I follow three of them since 1990 and most of Mariah's fans has always been teeanagers and kids and Whitney and Aretha on the other hand their fans has always been older people who prefer more feminine voices! Mariah is nothing special!Even now i said these people that Mariah is the best( i don't think so of course because i'm not a teenager) and all of them are able to fight with me because they think that Whitney and Aretha have much better voices!
MR R Don't worry i know many people who adored Mariah too when they were kids and teenagers and now when they grow up they know that her voice is nothing special!
Raquel Altamirano I think it's more to do with your stylistic preference. I mean like sure Mariah sounds more girly but I think everyone can agree that her tone is more pleasant to the ear. However, Aretha still was able to showcase a perfect technique (as usual).
@@catalinasaldivar2931 Mariah's voice is not special? How come impersonators from everywhere can easily emulate Whitney, Aretha, Celine's tones and sing their songs yet you could hardly find a singer who could do Mariah's tone and songs? If anything, Mariah's voice is something special coz she could do powerful (especially during her debut) and soft. I don't think Whitney and Aretha, as much respect as I have for them, could sing My All with the same intricacy as Mariah.
Aretha is far better than Mariah. I think her voice is much more interesting and she has better control. Aretha is definitely much more versatile and sang when she was just a kid. Whitney and Mariah really don’t even compare.
Personally as upper belts go I think whitney has the best belts between C5-Eb5, Mariah has the best E5-F#5 belts, and aretha/Patti have the best G5+ belts. :-)
Paulo Siwsan Incredible Mariah with her girlish voice and her 14-15 years old fans who prefer girlish voices( i follow her since 1990 and almost all of Mariah's fans has always been teenagers) and incredible Aretha who can sing jazz and can improvise, something Mariah could never do! And Whitney had the most feminine and natural voice! And Mariah always co- writes songs with 20 or 30 people more1 Sia is much better songwriter for example!
both of them are belting with amazing vocal placement...but mariahs belts are elastic and light and pleasing with fullness.....arethas belts are more like mixing the whole thing with big power... DAMN IT both are amazing :/
Lamb Forever Indeed. While Aretha is above Mariah as a vocalist, I prefer Mariah as a singer. She has both technique and a very pleasant tone. I don't like Aretha's tone and singing style. Have you listen to her cover of Hero? After watching her version, I realized that being a better vocalist doesn't make one a better singer. Technique and beautiful tone should always go together.
Ignasi Martí Palet Yes and that's why I made my comment because I prefer Mariah's timbre in phrasing those notes. In the studio, both are great but Aretha is better in hitting these high belts live. Aretha's mix is more even though while some of Mariah's G5 and G#5's are chest dominant(still good but too much can be bad).
+Lamb Forever Mariah could also sing with a vibrato, but she never prefer that typical singing like Whitney and Aretha... but her notes are phrased more difficult also Mariah notes are way more resonant and brighter, while Aretha sounds very screamy.I think Mariah is better.

It should not be a competition every one has their own range, the folks who sing loud can have a part, and the folks who dont sing as loud can sing theirs,
@Jared95C Due to her placement; Mariah's vocal belting placement is not mixing (adding head voice to chest voice like most singers including ree do) she places her belts in the 'head' belting is harder this way so sustaining a hard belt is alot more difficult.
Mariah has this golden, liquid tone that in her upper register shines even brighter but is also even more pleasant to the ear. She IS the ultimate singer and without a doubt the most beautiful and versatile voice in the history of recorded non operatic music.
Mariah said herself that she couldn't compare and she didn't step up to the plate and give Aretha a run for her money when they were on stage together (Although I'm sure she probably could have...but she didn't) so...*Kanye shrug*
+kayteeelle Well, it was in 1998 when Mariah was very hoarse 1997-98 was one of her worst vocal era, what saved her was her wonderful timbre that was still intact at the time.
Marcus Rafael Ferracin Mariah SLLAAAAAAAAAYED Her solo PERFORMANCES that night as VOCAL BEAST. And she sounded way better than any of them that night, even her voice was hoarse fresh from her butterfly tour.
I'm not saying she sounded bad, her voice was still beautiful and able to give good performances but her vocal condition was bad and harmed her belting area. Besides, she should not be singing with her voice like that cause singing hoarse is a vocal suicide, it can do much damage to your vocal chords.
Aretha uses the sphincter a lot, that’s why her voice sounds too nasal, but is too breathy. Instead, Mariah’s voice uses oral sphincter and nasal sphincter and she knows how to use both together perfectly, that’s why she sounds so clear, so strong and so effortless.
Mariah and Aretha are 2 of my favorites! Both incredible artists, love both. Mariah’s voice is the most beautiful. I just wish she’d get those nodules removed and record some big ballads again ❤️❤️❤️
Aretha Franklin was great at what she did, and no one can deny that. But honestly, the fact that this space has become a full on Mariah discussion board should be your answer as to who the over-all superior singer is here.
Just because the majority of people choose Mariah over Aretha, that doesn't mean that makes Mariah the better singer and a more talented artist! The majority of the people might be people who are made up of younger, uninformed people, that are more familiar with Mariaha's work than Aretha's. Many of the younger generation are into "singers of today." Therefore, they only know what Aretha's work has been for the last 10 or 15 years(if that much)!!! They haven't done their "homework" or research to fully know Aretha's extensive work that expands more than 60 years! They don't have all the facts concerning Aretha's career! I know that because many people say that Mariah has covered more genres than Aretha Franklin. That is absolutely not true! Aretha is the most versatile singer in the history of recorded American music. Some say Mariah can sing Jazz. I have all her recordings and I NEVER heard her sing, Jazz. Not to mention Gospel, Blues, House, New Jack Swing, Disco, classical, Broadway and American Songbook Classics, as Aretha has! I'm sure Mariah herself would agree that Aretha is more versatile! This is not to suggest that I don't like Mariah, or that she's not a great singer/artist! I only write this to say, that at the end of this "survey," if most people "vote" for Mariah, that in and of itself, doesn't prove that Mariah is better or more talented than Aretha!
@@MPardo-cx6jj I'm shocked by the response. In my mind it was shocking how much better Aretha is. One comments said Mariah doesn't have to strain. Um, did we hear the same thing? I wouldn't call it straining, but Mariah definitely has a pinched sound to get Gs unlike Aretha. In my mind, the only reason for this general false assessment has to to be biased, as you stated. No sane person can listen to this video and say that Mariah's Gs are better than Aretha's.
Another Huge reason is that Mariah's top note is higher than Aretha's top note, and in music, the high note is like the "home-run" in baseball. For many people, all they care about is the "home-run" note. I too love the "home-run" note but more than anything, I LOVE, overall, how the game or song is played or sung, respectively! This fact has many people believing that Mariah's range is wider than what Aretha displayed. However, it's Aretha who had the wider range because she was able to hit low contralto notes than Mariah (Mariah practically has no bottom in her voice) and most women singers. At the end of the day, "LET THE MUSIC PLAY," irrespective of who you enjoy and who you don't! @@davidalbro2009

Overall, I would give this to Aretha, but for my own personal reasons. In terms of actual sound, both of them are phenomenal, though Mariah seems to have less ease so high in her chest voice. Aretha's ease of access ends at the top of her mixed belt, while Mariah has a singularly GORGEOUS head voice and whistle voice, so it all balances out. Phenomenal show from both of them.
I prefer Mariah's tone, and her fuller em chest powerful belts, Aretha is a Queen, but most people can do like her now in belts, but not everyone can do like Mariah, resonant, pleasant, and fuller belts.
@MrButler124 Yes it does, however MC has been blessed with a huge chest voice she simply places her upper belts in the 'head' creating this amazing bell-like resonance.
Aretha's G#5s were SO much better than her (own) G5s. However, she had a heavy heavy mix which gave an unpleasant stretched sound to her belts. Maybe they weren't well supported. Mariah's voice maintained most of its tone and roundness well into the G5s. Also, Mariah was phrasing up there a LOT. Aretha just had straight belts. Mariah wins, without a doubt. Of course, Aretha can belt higher. But that's alright. That doesn't hold any attraction for me since her very tone doesn't sound pleasant in this region. I'd take a G#5/A5 belting Mariah any day.
Mariahs G5s sound better but Aretha are better from a technical stand point. Aretha is the queen of G5s. So although Mariah G5s are more ear pleasing the way Aretha executes her G5s are better and much more supported.

@pritykazy yes 'dear'.. 5 octave range.. her high belts and whistle register, and tbh that is just by people that dont really know much about music because within the industry she is known for ALOT more.. she has MANY G5's & G#5, but as i said - Aretha is a higher upper belter, a G5+..

Aretha has more blues and soul influence and produces a tighter more piecing tone. Mariah's high notes are more rounded and supported. Both sound great but I'd have to give it to Mariah for ease.
@@mandm471 Both are excellent... not taking anything away from Aretha's skill, we all know she's a legend. I'm saying that Mariah's tone is sweater and more pleasing to the ear (less shrill) in these higher register belts, live and in the studio.
***** I don't think Mariah could in her prime. I mean, even in her prime, she struggled with G5's live, and the only live G5 I can think of from her prime off the top of my head is the G5 from Hero in the Tokyo Dome. But besides that, I can't really think of any. Even when singing Anytime You Need A Friend, she sang F#5's instead of G5's.
This is hard because they belt these notes differently. Both are timeless singers and two of the best vocalists ever. Aretha and Mariah both have amazing techniques and incredible agility in their upper registers. Aretha is a bit more heady while Mariah’s belts are a little more full. While the examples you used for Mariah weren’t her best, her comfort in belting definitely in F#5. While Mariah still can belt the hell out of a G5 with amazing placement and resonance (and has done this live even on more than one occasion) I have to give this to Aretha! If this was a F5 and F#5 battle, Mariah would have one. But Aretha definitely takes this one
some people are deaf! Aretha at her higher notes is much more effortless! MC struggles like crazy! even at her prime.... as for resonance, I think people don't understand what resonance is? Aretha is using lots of twang, thus she has that sound that many mistaken with nasal sound. Mariah belts with a sweeter sound, less twang (thus less powerful), and she is actually nasal sometimes, of course her studio recordings will cover that, but at her live you can hear the nasality especially when she over works her voice and she has to push to get the notes full.
Her upper notes were pretty nasal from 1990-1994 (especially in 1990, her debut era), but she fixed it in 1995 (the Daydream era). The G5 in Hero during the Daydream Tour in Tokyo was amazing.
Precisely, doing those notes, with that resonance and clarity without using twang, is something only Mariah Carey can do. Twang allows to hit high notes with power, but will inevitably change your tone to a more nassal sound (not true nassality, but still unpleasant for many people). Mariah keeps her tone crystal clear, warm and soft, until the very last note. The only moment Mariah starts sounding piercing is when she whistles because a whistle will always be piercing. Are people unaware of how extremely difficult is to belt like MC? She could be literaly belting next to you and it would still sound pleasant. She has a naturaly gorgeous voice, and a unique belting placement which she has built to sound like an angel. Btw where do you hear nasalty on Mariah's voice? lol that has NEVER happened.
The audio clips selected for Aretha are pretty bad. You can't really make a comparison when you have crystal clear audio on one side and then on the other side is crappie.
Are we really comparing "live Aretha" with "studio Mariah"? A joke. Aretha mops the floor with Mariah. You may not like her tone but she is a vocal TITAN. Aretha is supported from Top to Bottom and picks up power as Mariah gets thinner. Compare Aretha and Chaka....not Aretha and Mariah. This is a joke. Aretha is the avatar of the holy spirit.
Edward Wheeler: All Aretha does is wail and moan. There are female singers whose resonance and artistry are greater, such as Lara Fabian (who sings in 12 languages), Monica Naranjo and a healthy Mariah Carey.
Edward Wheeler He doesn't, when they lack facts they resort to nonsense. Now sir why use her musical little sister Chaka, don't embarrass my girl even though she can keep up for a minute or two. Lol
Aretha takes this. Mariah is a beast with belting but Aretha just goes higher and higher without the slightest strain or thinning. They are the best singers of their generations.
I love both and even if Mariah belts these and Aretha upper belts these, I have to say maybe the sound is a recording issue. I personally prefer Mariah tho, but Aretha is like God. These are totally her notes. They’re so amazing! ♥️
I love Aretha. I love Mariah. But Mariah is my favourite, because she's so sleek and her tone is the best. But of course it was Aretha who inspired Mariah.
@KellyFan4Lyfe08 she doesnt mix, she has mixed a little bit in recent years, but most of these are from predominate chest. She places her sound in her head, but that doesnt mean she mixes.
Great video :) *Faved* again lmao. For me its a tie vocally, Ree has the effortless sustained mixed power with the slightly unpleasant tone however Mariah's tone is so incredible the most pleasant tone when belting in my ears and she can still sustain even with her unique technique (atynaf & tgtbaw) so I'm biased to her :)

no question it's Mariah. Aretha's belt sounds like adam lambert. ewww. ( ihave nothing against adam, he's a great mixer)but compare these notes Mariah has the upperhand she's unique. Aretha's mixed notes have no resonance. it's easier to access because gays in the Philippines can sing using the same mixing technique. Mariah's using a FULL chest voice that's why it resonates.
This comment makes no fucking sense at all. If Mariah's belts sound better than Aretha's it's because Mariah's are studio recordings, I doubt she has *ever* hit a G#5 live. Aretha is resonant as well up there. And you can't hit any upper belts in 'chest voice'. Mixed voice is not a stylistic choice, it's an obligation if you wanna sing that high.
Mariah didn’t need a studio in her prime. There was no auto tune yet, no pitch correction. Studio, or live, it doesn’t matter. She was the best in her genre. So, why does she need to do A G5 Live, when she can make F5’S her bitch ? ruclips.net/video/tY0SMqLLEUc/видео.html
No shade or anything... but I find it funny how Mariachi fans say Aretha screams, but then they get aggravated when people call her whistles 'squeals'. For me, personally, I would have to chose Aretha's belts over Mariah's. Aretha has her high belts in tip top shape, vibrato, resonance, and pitch. Mariachi sounded good too, but I just prefer more mixed G5's.

Great video, keep the good work ;)
If you see her face while she’s singing, you will see the effortless.
@@joanmaciel6178 I guess Aretha is more effortless in upper belting, you can see some efforts or full efforts when she did the upper belting. I guess that's why Mariah's belting sounds fuller

I'm not a big fan of the head predominance.
the beauty about Mariah's voice is that she doesnt have to yell to reach these notes..no pushing, just stable larynx singing..just effortlessly sliding back n forth between chest n head voice..pure belting quality hehe..that is why her g5 to a5 almost doesnt sound like a very high note due to the quality of sound retained throughout..but in reality they r exceptionally high notes hehe..but Aretha's powerful mix is very fitting to her style of singing as well as her songs.

I don't know who's better....... but i prefer Mariah
I'll always have Aretha at the top of my list. However, I gotta give it to Mariah this time around. Although aunt Ree's G5's were deadly on stage, Mariah has this sweet and tender feeling about her range, even tho they're high powerful notes.
Technique: Aretha > Mariah
Tone: Mariah >>>>>>> Aretha
Mark Tam good!! we can't suching the mariah vocalizatin

Mariah's voice, melismas and tone are the most pleasant and healing. Followed by Whitney and Aretha further down the list surely.

I don't think Whitney and Aretha, as much respect as I have for them, could sing My All with the same intricacy as Mariah.
Aretha is far better than Mariah. I think her voice is much more interesting and she has better control. Aretha is definitely much more versatile and sang when she was just a kid. Whitney and Mariah really don’t even compare.

Aretha is definitely better than Mariah in belting G5's and G#5's. She can maintain a vibrato on those high belts but I prefer Mariah's tone.
True. Aretha's tone is ok. Mariah's tone is just beautiful. Aretha knows how to mix well. Mariah however is more chesty.
+Lamb Forever Beauty is subjective.

Aretha claimed this note as her own when she performed “I’m Losing You” live
She just has more power and soul, and less effort. Both are amazing tho

+kayteeelle Clearly, Mariah was smarter than Aretha was lucky. She knew better than Celine what the outcome would be.
+kayteeelle Well, it was in 1998 when Mariah was very hoarse 1997-98 was one of her worst vocal era, what saved her was her wonderful timbre that was still intact at the time.

Besides, she should not be singing with her voice like that cause singing hoarse is a vocal suicide, it can do much damage to your vocal chords.
I love Mariah to death, but I feel that Queen Aretha walks away with this one.

I know this is quite out off topic but has she sung any A5's live? I've heard only one but I don't remember what song was she singing.
MC struggles even in her prime. Girl. You know nothing "OBVIOUSLY" You're just here to hate caused by your desperation. HILARIOUS Dumbass.
"hate"? since constructive criticism is hate? I like better carey than aretha, doesn't mean Im not objective.
Thank you. You seem the only one to understand me
Precisely, doing those notes, with that resonance and clarity without using twang, is something only Mariah Carey can do.

"Any time you need a friend" c&c club remix
no question it's Mariah.
Aretha actually has resonance however it can be masked by the twang she uses
and mariah also mixes but its chestier

No shade or anything... but I find it funny how Mariachi fans say Aretha screams, but then they get aggravated when people call her whistles 'squeals'. For me, personally, I would have to chose Aretha's belts over Mariah's. Aretha has her high belts in tip top shape, vibrato, resonance, and pitch. Mariachi sounded good too, but I just prefer more mixed G5's.
Mariachi? Weak shade.
Mariah Carey Fan
Sorry, Auto-correct messed that up. And Im not shading. Its the truth. Mariah fans always saying Aretha screams her belts, but then wanna get all pissy when people say she "squeaks". But Pesonally, I prefer Aretha over Mariah.
Peanut LaBelle Oh ok I understand. No I don't think Aretha screams at all. Actually I think Aretha is a superior vocalist over Mariah (probably the best, along with Queen Patti), I just prefer Mariah. I do agree though, Mariah fans can be idiots sometimes, they are ignorant when saying that about the queen of soul;)
Mariah Carey Fan Finally Someone who understands! You are a very understanding person. I love Patti and Aretha. I love them all, because even they (Aretha & Patti) have flaws to Mariah, but its all a matter of preference.. Some people are just so quick to fight and argue. Thank you for understanding! :)
Peanut LaBelle Of course! I totally agree, I'd rather not fight over people who I don't even know. You have a great day:)
What song @ 4:39 and 3:11
No hate but christina cant do this g5 and g#5 with resonance and power that mariah and aretha has she is nowhere in league of these legends sorry for @anh kiet but nice try
Christina only hit over 6 G5's in her whole career and 3 G#5's and that's it live and studio
I find it so hard to decide with upper belts, Aretha is the queen of upper belts BUT Mariah is just as good (especially when it comes to studio... Both have superb diction, tonality, resonance/technique... TIE
Mariah Carey is nicknamed queen of Upperbelts for a reason
No , nobody calls her this .
No she isn't.
@initochanchan and My All, studio vocally - out of this world, but has never been replicate live in such a 'soaring way' ATYNAF G5s are some of the best any women has done, the power, resonance, phrasing, vibrato... and she has never done that live BUT in 1993 when she hit those F#5 with just as much conviction and just as impressive, it was just a semitone lower.. so im generalising.. but still..
