"For the video for Settle Down, The 1975's singer Matthew Healy got together with Nadia Marquard Otzen, to bring to life a story that's been very close to his heart. In fact, he's been dreaming it for years.
The video, conceived by Matthew and directed by Nadia, is superficially a drama within the hard-bitten confines of its setting in the North-East of England. But in fact, its about the bond between two boys that transcends grim reality - evocatively shot by DoP Martijn Van BroekHuizen - and reaches into the supernatural.
"I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger," says Matthew. "The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. I think I was slightly obsessed with how certain, bleak areas of Northern England contained my history and the soul of my family, my psyche. I always felt connected and disconnected at the same time. Metaphorically and physically I would visit these places frequently as a youngster and in turn have used them as the setting to a lot of the stories in The 1975. The North East was the visual setting to my formative years.
"I suppose, like any narrative, the meaning and the connotations within the story are subjective. I’ve always been quite fascinated with the potency of same sex relationships, platonic or otherwise. I was brought up in a very open-minded environment, somewhere I felt that, whoever I was, I would be accepted. With this understanding I was also very aware of others, school friends, acquaintances - whom, due to where we lived, probably didn’t have such a comfortable place to grow up. We were unaffected and affected by taboos and the small-minded at the same time. I’ve dreamt the story of these two boys on countless occasions - every time drawing a different conclusion on its meaning.
"With ‘Settle Down’ I wanted to make a story about the extension of that dream, a video that explores love, a video that was as fantastical.
"Upon meeting Nadia, I told her about my dream. We sat for hours looking through pictures and talking - it was decided in those moments. We were just to film my dream. The process of making this video was so intensely exciting for me as I was finally working through and figuring out exactly what this place, this story and these characters meant to me. I think now that I understand it. But I’m totally open to suggestions / interpretations."

Trust me, if more frontman singer-songwriters from well-known pop/rock bands made music videos about boyhood same-sex desires & spoke openly about them like Matty Healy does, the world would change in some very important ways & also a hell of a lot faster.

The fact they have actual verses in their songs doesn't hurt. They're a tremendous band; the 80's new wave influence is great and a refreshing change from today's more commercially driven music.

William Davis they are, for sure, but their style doesn't fit the typic pop mold of today. They're more lyrically focused than most, which isn't what most artists are doing.

    Lyrics:
    A soft sound
To the way that she wears her hair down
    Covering up her face.
And oh what a let down,
And I don't seem to be having any effect now
    Falling all over the place.
    But you're losing your words
    We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you.
    But you're losing your turn
    I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
    A small town
Dictating all the people we get around
    What a familiar face.
Do you get what I mean now?
I'm so fixated on the girl with the soft sound
And hair all over the place.
And you're sure that I'd learn
    I'm pushing through bodies
Avoiding me and walking 'round you.
And you're cold and I burn
    I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
    A soft sound
And to the way that she wears her hair down
    Covering up her face.
And oh what a let down,
I don't seem to be having any effect now
    Falling all over the place.
    But you're losing your words
    We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you.
    And you're losing your turn
    I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house

Now I just stop myself around you.
    For crying out loud!

Why does everyone say their songs all sound the same? Because of the unique sounds used in their music that's not in other bands' music, they sound different than more popular songs, thus making people think they all sound the same? Each song by this band is obviously BY this band, so of course each song will be similar because of their music style, same goes for other bands. What's the point in pointing out the similarities of each song of THIS band when practically every other band is the same way? There's only ever a difference if A.) comparing albums (and this is The 1975's first, so there's no argument about EPs either), or B.) If the band didn't really write their own music. And That's why The 1975 is amazing, because they've poured their heart and soul into this music.

    • @williamstewart6139
      @williamstewart6139 10 лет назад +4

I totally agree, if people are accusing songs of being similar, look at One Direction, most of their songs have the same tune, and i'm sure they aren't writing them, thats the type of band that will die out eventually like Mcfly did back in the day as they run out of ideas, I think music sounds much better when it is original and The 1975 are producing this rare genre which sounds amazing!!

it feels so weird coming back to watch this video knowing that their new album is coming out in February and they are breaking out in color. There is just something so special about their black and white era that I feel sad having to leave behind.

+mumblematter I feel you. I fear they will become commercialized despite their freethinking mentalities. With a release of a new album, you know some sounds must change, and appearances will change, to keep an audience engaged, but with these newer upbeat releases, I'm kind of skeptical...I really enjoy a melancholy and mysterious vibe like Me, Anobrain and Fallingforyou. I hope they continue that into their new album.

    • @happypulse99
      @happypulse99 8 лет назад +34

+Noah Hollingsworth Matty says in the opening of that video that it should be black and white and commented on how the 'pop' vibe was not what the band is really about. Girls was meant to be a sarcastic take on pop videos and is more of a juxtaposition to the music that they predominantly make, not a representation of the band as a whole.

coming to terms with your sexuality especially raised in a strict compulsory heteronormative environment feels as if it was enlightenment, at least for me, and i think the glowing part at the end of the video capsulated that experience of clarity in terms of my being sexually fluid. the part where the elders dropped to the ground says a lot about society feeling as if someone else's sexuality should directly concern them & be burdened by it to the point of falling apart, when it shouldn't

for those of u who are confused about the video, this is what matty says:
"I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger. The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. I think I was slightly obsessed with how certain, bleak areas of Northern England contained my history and the soul of my family, my psyche - I always felt connected and disconnected at the same time. Metaphorically and physically I would visit these places frequently as a youngster and in turn have used them as the setting to a lot of the stories in The 1975 - the North East was the visual setting to my formative years.
I suppose, like any narrative, the meaning and the connotations within the story are subjective. I’ve always been quite fascinated with the potency of same sex relationships, plutonic or otherwise. I was brought up in a very open minded environment, somewhere I felt that, whoever I was, I would be accepted. With this understanding I was also very aware of others, school friends, acquaintances - whom, due to where we lived, probably didn’t have such a comfortable place to grow up, we were unaffected and affected by taboos and the small minded at the same time. I’ve dreamt the story of these two boys on countless occasions - every time drawing a different conclusion on its meaning.
With ‘Settle Down’ I wanted to make a story about the extension of that dream, a video that explores love, a video that was as fantastical, consuming and limitless as the love we all chase and desire. Love as I have always imagined.
So upon meeting Nadia, who directed the video, I told her about my dream. We sat for hours looking through pictures and talking - it was decided in those moments. We were just to film my dream. The process of making this video was so intensely exciting for me as I was finally working through and figuring out exactly what this place, this story and these characters meant to me. I think now that I understand it. But I’m totally open to suggestions / interpretations. X"

I favor the self titled album over the second album solely because of this song. I tend to gravitate to the more "raw" and "pure" sound of the first album rather than the "computerized" sound of the second. (Don't get me wrong I love the second album) Settle Down is so lovely and timeless, just like this band.

I think this video showed the two boys going through a lot of emotions and family troubles they may have had in their lives so they start doing activities such as trying to teach themselves how to box to distract them from what's going on even though they should be staying at home. At the end when they connect everything around them slows down and pauses so the people can reflect on themselves and it shows that people under certain circumstances are not alone...
Hm yeah that's what i got from the video :) oh and love the song has always been one of my favourites in the album x

It's about the bond and connection between two friends. It speaks to the power of relationships-regardless gender etc. Plus these boys are a little young for it to be anything romantic. It's simply about friendship and the power of that type of bond, especially in a town as stark and sad as this. The 2 have a spark because they now have a companion to be a fellow child with; a fellow adventurer. Sweet concept.

    A soft sound
To the way that she wears her hair down
    Covering up her face.
And oh what a let down,
And I don't seem to be having any effect now
    Falling all over the place.
    But you're losing your words
    We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you.
    But you're losing your turn
    I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
    A small town
Dictating all the people we get around
    What a familiar face.
Do you get what I mean now?
I'm so fixated on the girl with the soft sound
And hair all over the place.
And you're sure that I'd learn
    I'm pushing through bodies
Avoiding me and walking 'round you.
And you're cold and I burn
    I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
    A soft sound
