This record came out when I was in the ninth grade and it absolutely blew all our minds out. Basically a Beastie Boys record with songs. Just so incredible.
beck was on so much lsd for the tour cycle of this album that its a wonder the show was able to go on some nights. surprised more people havent made any vids about how much of a wreck beck was during this period
Studio Vision! I remember spending hours in that damn thing whittling 2-measure diddles into something musical. I think the DIY vibes of this era was driven a lot by the PITA toolkit we had to work with. It was, you know... modern, but also incredible cryptic and fussy. A recipe for happy accidents. I miss those days, but I don't wanna go back either.
I started in ‘98 so I know what you mean. Not many people are willing to have such an approach at any point anymore, because so much can be done quickly and redone and edited etc. I miss it and don’t
I love this concise yet precise insight into Odelay.I love this album,I'm a musician and have always found it a bit mysterious, even though I have a good idea of how it was constructed.Your video was great but the mystery is still intact, its one of those rare creative gems. Thanks so much.
@@jas8012 Scientology has a pernicious way of creeping into the art. Apparently, Beck was born in the cult, but no longer has a strong affiliation. Whatever that means…
for all the off-the-wall creative experimenting and gimmicks, the songs themselves were strong enough to be all over the radio. I think his songwriting got even better on Mutations, which is just fairly traditional acoustic folk in style, no gimmicks
My father at the time was nominated for a Grammy for the liner notes in the Doo-Wop boxset. I told my dad to vote for Odelay as being a nominee he had voting rights!
You did a good job with what's available, but the album deserves a proper doc or at least oral history. It's just exploding with ideas and sounds, as were Mutations and Midnight Vultures.
I updated a few things, the first one was released when the channel was small so it didn't get much exposure. My voiceover was terrible back then as well so that was re-done plus a few little changes.
@@mixingmasteringonline seriously. I had some old emu 32s, a arp 2600, some unknown thing. Long time ago, got rid of them thinking the future was upon me. Now I want them all back lol
I must say that I have a fond soft spot for the old Sound-craft Studio 24/8/2. I really did not like the Mackie equivalent. It was like the cheap desk wars, Mackie being the SSL and SoundCraft being the cheap neve. SoundCraft wins.
I once found that very difficult to get by. Him, Juliet Lewis and Tom Cruise. But then, at the end of the day, it's the output that matters and not the man (or woman). Tom Cruise is as mad as a hatter, and his female co-stars are so creepy on the interview couch with him it's like watching a hostage video, but the movies just don't suck, they're entertaining. I just think of Beck like that, mad as hell obviously, but he's made some fine recordings. I loved Odelay, but Mutations for me is just sublime. Nigel Godrich did an amazing job on that record...same year as OK Computer too I believe.
Odelay and Paul's Boutique are epic albums 👍
This album is so goated

So like Hello Nasty then.

This album was a revelation to me. Blew my mind wide open. Great video!
Thank you, me too!
Masterpiece of an album. Probably my favorite by him.
I think so too, it was so unique when it came out.
Liked Beck since the beginning…
it’s always unique and dunked in sarcasm & humor. Perfecto!

Thank you, great to know its appreciated 🙂
All killer, no filler.
This album had a swing that I just hadn't heard in this 'electronic' of an album before.
I saw Beck on the 1995 Lollapalooza tour where he played Where it’s at, Lord Only Knows, and Novacane. It was pretty cool.
Very cool! 😃
GREAT album choice! Love the videos 🤙
Thank you!
Great retrospective and I love your voice.
Thank you ! 😀
Another great video man 👏
Thank you!
Very cool!
Becks been in my wheel house since Mellow Gold... Beck, Alice in Chains, Sound Garden, Nirvana was the soundtrack to my high school years in the 90s.
I have a hard time fully appreciating Beck bcuz of his cult affiliation but no doubt the guy has talent. “Wow” is such a sick beat
What’s that got to do with his music?

HotWax has the best intro ever concieved 😀
I used to STUDY that album.

Dust Brothers went on to produce bigger and better artists, such as... Hanson...
😂
Moogs 60 bucks, Toss them then get another.
No today anymore lol.
I know, where’s my Time Machine? 😅

Wow, I bet you do!
I wanted to enjoy this but all the video footage is choppy and impossible to watch

Ugh. Beck is an exemplar of how awful and aimless 90s music was. It’s sloppy, careless, poser-music.
Jst cant believe hes a scientologist tho..kinda sucks.

Other's are Christians or Muslims, same madness.
Who cares? Can he live? Can U just let a brother live?🥸
