Having worked for Lance at the Monte Carlo in Vegas for years as his audio engineer, I saw this act 1000’s of times. I knew how he did most of it. But never once in watching it over 3000 times did I ever see him mess up or reveal anything. He truly is that good, and yes an extremely nice guy and was excellent to work for!
Thank you for your service. Being an Audio engineer is crucial to the Magic. Cool
I've seen him mess up. But it didn't look like a mistake. You wouldn't even know.
The first time I ever went to Las Vegas we only had enough money to see one show. I insisted on seeing Lance Burton and I was not disappointed. As a fellow Southerner it was so great to see him really succeed and be one of the greatest illusionists I ever saw. He was unbelievably good
@@JepMasta He is amazing indeed.
The best magician I've ever seen in my entire life
Think of how much time and creativity he put into this and dozens of other routines. Perfect.
Even Teller has said that Burton did some of the most flawless sleight of hand he'd ever seen.
When Teller is giving you compliments, you KNOW you’re a good magician
@@Nickaloadyon Teller can't hold Burton's jock
The birds are TIGHT!
They stay on the perch!!!
Greatest trick of all.
He is doing the most incredible sleight of hand, and the audience doesn't even realize how extremely intricate and difficult what he is doing is.
His slight of hand is beyond next level.
Of course they don't. They're not magicians...
Personally, I think this guy looks like your classical vampire with that hypnotic stare those long Nosferatu looking fingers but definitely is one of the greatest magicians of all times. His theatrics is perfect
He does look kind of like he's about to bite someone...
@Miraak Nah... My guess would be Romania.
I was disturbed by his facial expressions. Very Dracula
@@bar10ml44 It's to stop you looking too much at his hands.
So you got the fingers thing too?
Look close and they seem to change
I remember this. Guy could have been a movie star with that face and eyes.
Looks like a vampire.
Yes. I thought Lestat or Armand immediately.
demonic smile, disturbing, almost unreal
@@seekerfloyd7346 Only a loony bible thumper could mistake a smile for being demonic.
Yes 😊 he would have a great Dracula 🤣
This act remains still to this day one of the greatest of all time.
Well said. I totally agree.
Yep his delivery is so seamless, and the amount of tricks where he doesn’t break the audience’s stare - wow, true talent!!
I almost wish I didn't see it knowing life won't have quite as much to offer afterwards now on this level, lol.
Times got tough during the pandemic and sadly he had to eat the act 😢
Lance rarely looked at what he was doing. His eyes were towards the audience. Johnny was a magician prior to becoming a TV host.
Yes. The Great Carsoni. 8)
Nice to see. At that time they gave acts the time it deserved. Nowadays a performance would never be allowed to be this long. They think the viewers will get bored. And thats why we now have a generation of people with short or no attention span.
So true!
Wrong, it’s because corporations want more time to show their ads. They’ve cut down on show times, sped old shows up and put ads everywhere they can. Stop attacking the younger generations and just accept that business have gotten greedier. Also, look it up, the only reason this went long was because Carson had to ask the sponsors first more time. So stop ragging on the young people.
@@ddespair what do you mean "wrong"?? I said exactly that. I said they want the appearances shorter because they think the viewers will get bored. And what do bored people do? They change channel. Meaning they can't profit from their ads, of course. The result is a generation used to fast paced broadcasting, full of fast rewards. Not once did I blame the younger generation. How you even interpreted it that way is a real mystery...
Can you shorten that? I only made it half way through the second sentence.
@@nborin Funny
Little known is the fact that Johnny, a magician himself, bucked the network about commercial placement for Lance. Normally a commercial comes about every 7 minutes. But Lance needed more time so as not to break the continuity of his act. Johnny went to bat for him and got the network to delay going to a break; that's the clout Jonny had! Incidentally, magicians use doves, not pigeons!
If they used chickens then THAT would be real magic!
@@MovieMakingManDucks would be funny too.
Pigeons are doves.
"This single performance changed and elevated the Art of Magic"...I can see why. That was brilliant!
Yes he was absolutely incredible every time I seen him live in Vegas. Look at how much control he has. The man is AWESOME!!! Not to mention the nicest guy you could imagine!!!
Suuuuuuuupppppeeeeeerrrr classy. You can see just how much Carson enjoyed that.
I hope another Magician can carry on Lance's energy and style.
And never once did he look at any of his props..he always looked straight ahead, that's incredible!!!
Unreal! I'm VERY impressed!
nah, you need to rewatch it slowed down
with a creepy smile from beginning to end
I am 100% convinced that Lance Burton is Dracula.
one of the most enthusiastic and sincere responses for any guest ever by the esteemed mr. carson. starting with the introduction and continuing through the applause, you can see the genuine respect johnny had for lance burton. being in the genre contributed i'm sure, but it is still good to see how someone who is admired by millions of others can demonstrate unabashed admiration for a fellow performer. inspiring.
That was the most effortless, flawless, elegant and perfect performance I have ever seen. I remember master magician, Lance Burton being phenomenal when I watched him on tv as a kid, but now in my late 50’s after trying my hand at card magic myself over the last year or so, he is even more incredible than I remembered. That was a master class in all aspects of stage magic and performance. I need to point out that in addition to Lance Burtons amazing skill and presentation another element of real magic shown here, was the camera work. I wish every tv show director in the US would watch how to utilize the cameraman correctly as shown here. No one ever wants the camera to cut away from the act to focus on the judges, hosts, or audience members faces and reactions, no one wants to see that. Keep the camera on the performer at the same angle from start to finish. AGT I am talking to you!
Thank you for sharing. Card manipulation is difficult. Lance makes it seem simple. Good points about camera work as well.
I completely agree. I hate when they cut away
AGT is garbage with an obvious feel-good bias.
Ditto for filming bands. One camera center stage.
Saw him at his theatre in Las Vegas - acknowledged by many as the best dove magician ever, I think I agree.
He is unique for sure.
Acknowledged by many as the best magician ever too.
Same here. Saw him at the Monte Carlo in Vegas and was mesmerized the entire time. Best live show ever.
As good as Shin Lim, Chris Ramsey, David Blain, Chris Angel, Adam Wilber, etc, etc are..... a scant few of them could pull off what Burton did here, even with modern tech. His timing, setups, sleight of hand and card back palming are simply flawless. Absolutely the bible of card work and hidden pigeons.
Well said! I agree
And Shimada, who was a dove master
He's the closest to a REAL magician that I've ever seen. Who knows, maybe he is a REAL magician!
Or perhaps using black magic...
Only 21 years old here my word this act is beautiful every time I see it
Ah, Johnny...The King... Thank God, we grew up when we did.!
I'm from Burbank where NBC was. A friend and I happened to see Johnny as he was getting on the road towards Malibu. We waved and he gave us a wink and the finger gun greeting. I'll never forget it. Irreplaceable is the word for the King of late night.
He’s sleight of hand is stunning. Funny that the audience seemed less enthused to clap over the really beautiful and tougher mechanics, but the easier stuff elicited ooos and ahhs
He did some moves with the zombie ball I've never seen... Awesome performance!
By the way darksidedecptions.. I watched other video on your performance in school and gotta say you too also have some Amazing skillz..
Keep it up and you'll one day be as big as Lance Burton himself or even bigger..
Congrats!
@@TheMagicTaco I love the traditional magician style. I just have to find myself (style). I appreciate the encouragement. Lance Burton set the bar high.
Magnificent. Thank you so much for making this recording available.
Hundreds of hours of practice if not thousands for 10 minutes. He is great
No question! It's mind-blowing!
Lance Burton is the current recipient of the Royal Dynasty of Magic! It was started by Kellar who was Americas greatest illusionist in the late 1800s! The title has been passed down through the century from one “great” to another. Kellar passed it to Thurston who then passed it to Dante, then Lee Grabel and finally Lance Burton. 🤘👺
Yes. Lance is worthy of such an Honor. I hope to live to see who will be next.
Stunning performance that takes impeccable dedication and practice to perform this routine.
Very creepy the way he looks at the audience.
i did some of these tricks as a youth. Lance put a nice twist on many classic tricks. In another 10 years he would be world famous.

May favourite part.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Letting the audience think that dropping the card to the ground was an error (...he did this PERFECTLY - That was the set-up)
Then reappearing a replacement card to add to his let hand arrangement of cards (SUPERB!)

Many thanks for the tip.
(...I'll be doing that from now on)
God bless.
He got me...
Never saw him before nor heard of him either. Amazing!
NEVER!....and i mean,.."NEVER!"...go to 52st and BROADWAY cause youll get shit on by some birds!
Just saw Lance at the 2022 Cherry Festival in Beaumont Ca. He was amazing even in a scaled-down show...he had a crew of guest magicians and jugglers and the like...He did the table levitation and picked my little daughter to be levitated...He was so nice and made the experience amazing for her...He is Still Awesome. We met him after the show he was very cordial and friendly.
Great story and I'm glad you were able to see it. Lance is a true original. Thanks for sharing!
How did he levitate your daughter and she didn't know how he was doing it?!

He'd only been in town for a week when he was invited to do this show. He's 20 YO.
Man this crowd sucked. That candle manipulation between all his fingers on one hand is not exactly an easy trick - and they're all actively-burning wicks for that matter.
I am going to see Lance perform in Wendover next Month. I am really looking forward to it.
everything about Lance is 100 % true. A gentleman, the best... met him when I was 20... he stopped his Vegas show to give us , a bunch of 15-20 yr old kids a hand , stating we were the future of magic. What other $100M entertainer would do that.... i will give you a great story he told us too: durng his Monte Carlo reign, in his gorgeous theater, he would bring up a kid during the first act of his show and do an illusion, take a pic, and give the kid a Lance Magic Kit... he said once... he brought up a British kid... the kid did the routine... posed for the picture in front of hundreds of audience members... but Lance jokingly said like, " " Timmy, you don't look too excited about that Kit, would you like to have Stephanie instead... joking about his beautiful assistant ... without missing a beat... the kid said " Oh no, Father could never afford something like that ! " The entire place was rolling for 5 minutes straight.... he said it was something he'd never forget.
That is hilarious. I wish to have been there. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like Dracula. Mofo might be a vampire.
The magic is cool, but I'm mesmerized that the pigeons know to fly from one hand to the other, then up to the top of the sign, then stays there.
Magicians clip the wings of the birds to physically disable them. It makes it very difficult for the bird to fly. Their natural response when disabled in this way and thrown into the air is to find the nearest visible perch to rest.
It’s because their wings are clipped and once released their instinct is to fly upward only reaching too the perch being offered them.
Doves not pigeons
The best -- The greatest of showmen -- Great personality -- If he were a contemporary of Clark Gable and Gary Cooper he would have been under contract to one of the big studios! What the hell is wrong with our modern Hollywood producers?
Johnny at the end “Eeexpert! … Take a bow!” People don’t understand the weight Johnnys praised carried. If Johnny says your an expert then you’re a GOAT.
This should have 44 million👍🏼
I fell in love with Vivaldi’s Spring thanks to Lance Burton…saw him live three or four times
Also was fortunate to see his show in Vegas. Very unique how he never seems to be looking at what he is doing. top notch!!!
That's great that you were able to see him live. His focus and attention to detail sets him apart.
That is a real magic performance right there! Lance is great!
He even looks like a perfect Magician.
Legendary performance. Encore.
he looks creepy like a child molester
Masterful performance. Wow.
That perfomance is so great, but why does he always stare at us like Patrick Bateman ?
Lol
OH MY GOD I just found out who Will Arnett is imitating in Arrested Development.
Haha
Half of a good magic act is stage presence and Lance certainly has it.
4:25 when she asks if you have a lighter
He looks like a merging of Jim Carrey and Elvis...
Brilliant.
You just don’t see acts like that any more.
I hope we get to see another amazing Magician like him one day.
@@darksidedeceptions Check out Jeki Yoo or Mario Lopez.
Thank goodness.
@@dfarmer1584 not my bag either but his level of skill should be lauded.
Charlie Miller's act seems dated now too but he's Charlie Miller and I'm a stupid hillbilly
Lance Burton is very interesting both as a magician and as a mere name. He looks a lot like the actor Jack Palance. They could be brothers, which would make him Lance Palance. But in the 80s there was also a politician named Burt Lance, which is this magician's name backwards. I just had to throw that out there.
Don't forget Lance Armstrong and Lancelot Link. Also Tim Burton deserves an honorable mention.
@@surfghost9121 Thank you. You name two excellent additions.
This dude could have been an Elvis impersonator… :)
Never seen him so early in his career. That hair really makes him look like he wants to trade your soul for fame & fortune 😂
The majority of the people there had no idea what they were seeing, lol. I don't think any of them noticed the LIT candles he made appear between his fingers.
I was thinking the same thing. Incredible sleight of hand especially since he didn't even look at what he was doing. Kept his gaze and focus on the audience.
@@mr.k2559 -- Exactly 👍
This is what a vampire tired of millenium of actual magic would look like after a few centuries of practicing sleight of hand.
I saw this when it was originally aired on Oct 28th 1981 and I never saw anything that good ever even to this day. Perfect, classy, original , superb artistry and flawless execution of a genius. I got a nosebleed .I was so stunned and excited. It is still the greatest 12 minutes of magic of all time.
This performance is amazing and one of a kind indeed!
I have had the honor to see him twice at his Vegas show once with my now wife and best friend. His act was the best i have ever seen then and have never seen anything better since. Classic
Was fortunate to see him twice. Once, in the early 90's in the Lounge at the Hacienda and later in the Lance Burton Theatre at the Monte Carlo. I enjoyed both shows, but seeing him up close in the lounge was something I will never forget. Thanks for posting this!
Those doves are Smoking 😮🙄🇬🇧🌈🙏♥️
Excelente actuación
Ilusionismo de verdad!!
César 🎩🎩🎩
super creepy how he performs most of the tricks while gazing into the audience almost unaware of what his hands are doing so great
This was truly amazing. I most impressed with how he kept the doves from flying off in all directions
It’s true. I used to work with doves in my own act, and they CERTAINLY have a mind of their own!!
They are train to fly there he feeds them there
Magicians clip the wings of their doves to physically disable them. It makes it very difficult for the dove to fly and they just want to get to the nearest perch and rest. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that is cruel or not.
@@FlightEagle Yeah I'd say that's pretty cruel. Thank u for the info.
@@FlightEagle no they dont..I never clip wings ..I was professional magician for years
This guy most definitely sold his soul to the devil. :)
Haha! Nice!
he has serious joker vibe.
Where in the hell was he hiding all of those birds??
No hiding. Pure magic!
@STAGE MAGICIAN I guess its left for the spectator to determine. Magical Entertainment
easy: everywhere
Check out Darcy Oake he performs with a tight leather jacket.
The real magic is that small white object that flies from behind him in an arc towards the floor, making a popping sound @ 05:19
Is he supposed to look like Dracula?
I do recall an interview and Lance said he was trying to have a Vampire vibe.
Amazing and I must say a beautiful man to behold.
Amazing hands and tame birds...Wow!
Seeing Lance always gives me a feeling that it's Jim Carrey. That chin and expressions.
I was paying more attention to how creepy his face is and odd mouth movements than the actual magic lol - maybe it was deliberate? 😅
It was deliberate. A vampire like magician.
Bravo! Magic used to be an art form. Not the tech to fool some lazy sweet talking mute smiling celebrities. Just kidding. Bravo!
Actually he looks like a cross between Dracula and David Bowie. Lol
Truly beautiful what was amazing the really tough palming and sleight of hand card magic, in truth the most difficult tricks in his act which were done flawlessly got little response and the basic stage 1 set ups got oohs and aghs from the audience 😢.
Pay attention to his eyes 😮he does tricks not even looking at his hands 😮 always eyes on the crowd 😊 .. im amazed by the pigeons.. flew on the street sign and just chilled there😊
Very true.
Audience didn't realize what they were seeing
Lance will always be the GOAT
Just the perfect act for the right magician at the right time. Brilliant.
has mastered so many different skills here. all of these are classic tricks in the magic repertoire. he would introduce new illusions later on in his career. Nice use of Stravinsky. (thanks to paulnewman for correction)
"Firebird". Last movement. 🙂
Saw Lance way back at the Hacienda Hotel in Vegas, it was amazing the best ever in Magic.
I wish I had seen that show or the Tropicana before it. I did however, see him at the Monte Carlo. He was very nice and patient meeting with all the guests after the show. He is an honorable man.
Also saw Lance way back at the Hacienda . Awesome teenage memory. Michael Goudeau opened with some insane and hilarious juggling. Topas was in the audience that night. And I got called up on stage for the card stab. Mind blowing flawless sleight of hand. Had eyes on him like a hawk from the front table. Nothing closer to pure magic.
@@tidanmd So cool bro what a story!

i swear i was waiting for him to turn into a white dove
Having lived in Vegas for many years, I know where Burton lived for a time. 1280 Scooter Street was the address. It is a mansion that is painted all black up on a hill. He used to have wild parties there quite often and many female Porn stars attended. Strange thing is while building that house a construction worker was beheaded. I think he sold it earlier than one would have expected.
His fingers are thinner than mine were at birth!

Great video. This aired when I was 1 yrs old, so I don't remember it unfortunately lol. You know Burton is one of the greats because I noticed his tricks are still being used by most magicians today or at least their work is inspired by these tricks.
Dude looks creepy as Fck! Real life actor Jack Nicholson in The Shinning.

A craftsman who, from my memory, would have said yes to appear gratis at a kid’s birthday party let alone do charitable work or appear at some press event.
He looks like a Vampire trying to fit in society by being a magician. LOL!
@@KungFuMojo You hit it on the nail! That is actually the Character he was going for. Cool
Never forgett when I saw him winning FISM 1982 . An to most unknown person shocking the audience with something this extraordinary! After watching hours of hours of mediocre performers, this was worth every penny spend to visit Lausanne, Swiss.
Thank you for sharing.
One weird dude! Best part was the doves flying by themselves up to the road sign. That takes a lot of training.
I am guessing there is someone right behind him and we are seeing two peoples arms. Backstage is very dark which allows for it.
I'm convinced if Edward Scissorhands had actual hands, he'd be this guy
