Such a great theme, I don't know why they replaced it with such an utterly forgettable one in the 4th series.

Talking Pictures TV are showing this legal drama series. More than half a century old, but it still makes for worthwhile watching. Just have to commend that theme tune, with it's harpsichord-driven tempo, backed up with that bass guitar and drums:

a.k.a. John Batt (no relation to Mike as far as I know). His piece 'Non-Stop' was used for the ITN News bulletins from 1955.

A very good theme in series 1 - 3...they probably changed it on series 4 a) to "update" the show and b) more than probably, due to renewing licencing and royalties as the original theme had been used for 3 series, the show was immensely popular back then, and perhaps the composer wanted an increased fee - Yorkshire Television must have told him to sling his proverbial hook...I may be wrong...
The programme is currently being shown at 8pm every Monday on Talking Pictures TV here in the UK. Channel 81 on Freeview. It's currently showing series 2 from 1972 in colour. Of note, didn't Anna Palk have very thick hair, just look at her scalpline above her forehead where her hair meets her head...I've always noticed that ever since I saw her in a The Persuaders episode towards the end of its run...
Apparently John Stride was a nightmare to work with, he "terrorised" Directors with his temper and attitude to his work in whatever he starred in. I doubt he gave Dickie Attenborough any jip when he cameoed as a Tank Commander in "A Bridge Too Far" though. It's probable given he was such a recognizable face back then, British cinema goers would have certainly muttered "ooh, it's him from Main Chance"...
A very talented Actor but apparently a firebrand...

Thank you, so much, for posting this :0) I was watching an early episode of this newer series when this music was changed, I thought "I miss that harpsichord-noise".

I remember John Arnatt more for his portrayal of the Deputy Sheriff of Nottingham in later episodes of ITC's "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" (1955-1960).
