David Main is an ambitious, dynamic and highly capable young solicitor who, having gained valuable experience in London, returns to his native Leeds to establish a new practice. Driven by a thirst for success, Main seeks out the most lucrative cases, but is also a man with a conscience who often acts for the most vulnerable and underprivileged. While his occasionally impetuous approach can take him into difficult legal waters to the distaste of his more reserved and cautious Leeds partner Henry Castleton Mains acumen and resourcefulness rarely fail him.
John Stride (The Wilde Alliance) stars as David Main, alongside Anna Palk as his efficient and attractive secretary, Sarah Courtenay; Peter Bowles, Diana Coupland and Peter Jeffrey are among the guest stars in this second series of the immensely popular drama from Yorkshire Television.

The dialog in Main Chance is really really good, clever repartee where as dialog in modern drama tries to elicit emotion, this just impresses.

John Stride was an excellent actor who worked with the best but didn’t achieve the international success he deserved.

I could not have Anna Palk as my secretary. I'd get absolutely no work done at all.

Used to be sent to bed as a kid before this started..........way to 'adult' said Mum and Dad............but I always wanted to see the start.....any rail fans out there will remember the first series had a a Class 47 on the train at the beginning..........later on it was a Class 52 'Western'........

Same here, the end of Coronation Street was my signal for bed (with Elsie and Ena), so now catching up on this entire series on TalkingPictures TV is just brilliant. The writer was NJ Crisp who did many quality programmes en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._J._Crisp

Yes David Main did drive a Jenson Interceptor. A lot of this series was filmed at Bradford town hall. My sister was working there at the time and if she had had her way John Stride would still be gasping for breath in a broom cupboard.

This was a great set of 4 series which I enjoyed watching 40 years after production. The storylines were original & much copied. The one about relabelling plonk wine for example was also done in Rumpole of the Bailey & Pie in the Sky.
A minor gripe would be the recycling of actors in different parts. Glyn Edwards amongst others. There is no shortage of actors just the quality I suppose.

Make sure you're a member of a motoring organisation then - the engines were a bit dodgy.

When David Main started talking about his car insurance, I half expected the guy from the gocompare ad to burst through the door singing "go compaaaare!"
I remember this programme the first time round - I wish it could be repeated... and that classy sig tune!

Yes he did so that he could get to London from Bradford in about 2 hours. On the back of this Jensen had a big dealership in a building opposite Bradford City Hall.

Good old days at YTV, remember this series very well, I briefly once met the late Kate O'Mara at rep in 2001, we said hello, rehearsing with dwafts for panto in the W End of London, think she was in a wheelchair in Bad Girls at the time, I shall treasure that meeting for the rest of my time.
