The ending was very out of character for him like he would NEVER in a million years EVER abandon Harrison. And don’t get me started on how they just killed off deb at the last second
Yeliz Diril Didn’t Dexter think he was just gonna get Harrison killed if he stuck around? He never thought in a million years he would get Deb harmed in anyway but he did. He consumes all he loves.
My fiancee had never seen Dexter, I was in the middle of re-watching the show and she asked how it ended. I told her he became a lumberjack, she thought I was joking and had to Google it to believe it.
Lumberjack is literally just a real life manifestation of a new life, a new personality, a new place, so he can keep feeding his behaviour.. Could've been a fisherman, whatever, it's obviously trying to tell you he abandoned ship, what a psychopath serial killer with no empathy would do, to save his own skin and ability to keep doing what he does..
I'm still trying to figure why this! Why this!? This doesn't make sense to me but yet her death leaves a heavy emotional feeling when thought about this death
@@aieshagreenlee947 I think it's because you don't see it. So imagining Trinity in the bath with Rita, what he could have said to her before he killed her and all that is worse than anything they could have shown.
By the time I got around to watching Dexter, the series had already had its full run. Despite my ability to binge it on Netflix (I watched the full series in 2015-2016), her death left me so devastated that I stopped watching it for about as long as a season break - about a year. Not because I hated it, but because I felt the emotional devastation to my core and as a result I basically needed time to grieve. No TV death has ever hit me as hard as Rita's death.
The complexing part wasn’t thats he was a psycho but that we didn’t know if he was truly a psycho or just a messed up kid who was convinced he was a psycho and could never be more.
It’s probably the most interesting part of the show that’s rarely explored but only slightly hinted at by people who challenge him after he’s been found out. There’s something extremely sinister but also uncertain and definitely possibly misconstrued about someone who could have bad within because they were destined to be bad from the beginning or because of a traumatic event they were exposed to. While I don’t doubt that the cargo container served as a catalyst for his life, it’s far more interesting to imagine someone who had the desire and need to kill, but could cultivate and channel that need to do good, not necessarily because he desired justice, but because it was a viable way to meet his needs while also maintaining some sense of balance that most other people would have trouble arguing against. I enjoy that premise of the show so much, but it does seem like often the writers couldn’t decide how human or normal they wanted to make Dexter. Often it’s like he’s written to have life’s essentials as some sort of cover and distraction ONLY, but many times it’s established that he does care and wants this just for himself and not for any dubious reasons. It gets messy when they try to balance how having normal things while also attracting danger would result in consequences either directly for Dexter or the people in his life. After Rita... it just seemed like he more or less had loose ends in his life that were written out or only really brought into the plot when they needed to jeopardize Dexter again and raise the stakes.
No he was definitely are psychopath he couldn’t kill so many people and torture them if he wasn’t. Harry did know that , because of his experience for that. When Dexter mum died his brain cut out all of his feeling.
😂😂 so true!!! We've been BITTERLY disappointed sooo many times now, even outright betrayed!!! Thank you to The Sopranos, Mad Men who did it so very well, and especially Breaking Bad who made the entire series even better with their finale just when we thought it couldn't possibly get any better!!
It always amazes me how bad finals, be it TV or movie series, are justified and explained by producers/show runners; 'No it's where we were always going, you just don't get it, it was brilliant.' A series final is much like a joke: if at the end you have to explain it to the audience it sucked. (looking at you D&D)
Trope? The Bad finale is more of the rule. Think about how many tv shows have had truly great endings... those are more the exception than the rule!!! (Not to mention most shows don't end, they just get cancellled).
And for what even? It didn't even impacted on the storyline afterwards. She discovered his secret, went a little crazy, left the police, became drinking. All that could have happened without the falling in love crap. It wasn't simply relevant. If they weren't intended to explore the idea, then it was just a stupid plot device to get her to the church while he was burning it after the kill so she can discover him. Just find a different excuse for her to go there. Or don't get cold feet and actually deliver on the moral complications of a incestuous relationship.
Right! I don't know why they had to make her have romantic feelings for Dexter. They thought the audience wouldn't find it believable that she would kill for Dexter and hide his secret unless she was in love with him. It's just silly, there are siblings that would go to those length, no need to make her love him in any other way than sister-brother love.
Yep. And I know they weren't actual blood relatives but, eww. So gross. To make it even more awkward I'm almost positive the two were married and divorced in real life by the time that storyline happened. So. Damn. Awkward.
I remember reading somewhere that the showrunners had difficulty justifying why Deb would not turn Dexter in, because it is within her character to do so even if it's family. Family wasn't going to be enough to sell the idea to the audience that Deb would hide his secret for him.
I know dude. It doesn’t make sense. He didn’t want his son to be damaged by him or falsely raised by him, a serial killer, so he leaves his son with an even worst serial killer that kills innocent people.
some parts of me feel like he'll grow up normal, not like his father. Harrison is a bright kid, social and lived a fairly happy childhood around normal people, he doesn't know about his father's dark secret and I doubt Hannah would tell him about it. plus, he didn't show any psychopathic signs like his father when he was his age. I do hope they'll revive the show, maybe will see more of him and his father.
I absolutely loved this show and so did my husband. I didn’t want it to ever end. I was depressed! I then found all of the other shows Michael C. Hall starred in so that did help. They need to bring Dexter back!
I'm glad he didn't go to Argentina. I was expecting him to drown himself with Deb's body. But the fact that Jennifer Carpenter wanted Deb to die is making it easier for me 😬
I assume that’s why he talks a lot about emotions. Faking shit you don’t have isn’t easy... Not talking about it is as helpful as not studying for a test
I believe he was misunderstood by his main guide for creating his code- his father whom may have accidentally implied he has no emotions for himself. He immediately perceived him as a sociopath with no emotions for others and treated him as such but for himself is something debatable. Dexter may have internalized this into thinking he has no emotions at all when in reality he is most likely very human but chose to suppress those feelings based on the path he had already taken.
@@DeathnoteBB I think I understand your point .Still his inner voice narrating the story where he doesn't have to fake anything sounds emotional to me.
Another thing is sociopaths can have feelings, but it’s extremely limited to select people or things. I believe the show muddles the difference between psycho and sociopaths, but it isn’t unrealistic for him to either a) consistently feel the need to fake feelings and think about them to make sure he is manipulating adequately, or b) have some very limited feelings towards a select couple people or situations.
Dexter is a sociopath... They can understand feelings... but usually they have a hard time to feel the feelings... Understanding exactly doesn’t mean feeling the things.
Rita's death in Season 4 should have caused Dexter to start making mistakes in his kills, leaving evidence behind, not disposing of bodies properly, getting angrier and more aggressive with his Miami Metro coworkers and so on in Season 5 And they should have explored his tendency to get killers released or stop the police from catching them so he could be the one to kill them that he did in later seasons and explained it as his killing urges getting stronger and taking him over to the point where he'd ignore the Code and kill less deserving criminals who'd committed minor crimes or even complete innocents. Harry advised him to only kill people who got let off for their crimes so him ignoring that advice would have been a way to show him get worse over the show's course.
Agreed. How I would've envisioned S5 would've seen Quinn in Doakes's role; investigating Dexter. At the halfway stage he catches Dexter in the act but Dexter gets the upper hand; killing him in the process. However, in a rush he leaves evidence and Deborah finds out. Around episode 9-10 it should've had her confront Dexter and she either let's him go or he escapes, before she informs the police, leading to a manhunt with Dexter on the run. The final episode would have him be captured, time jump to his execution. Where in his imagination he's surrounded by photos of everyone he's killed, with the show ending as the lethal injection is administered. Anyway, that's how I imagine the show going. I don't recognise anything past season 4.
@@Xehanort10 doing that would just feel unsatisfying, as if he became worse and lost his code then then what Dexter is doing would fundamentally change and the questions on weather or not he deserves sympathy would become a moot point as now he's just evil.

Esther I think it’s because since he’s responsible, since he didn’t kill Saxon, she’s another victim he unfortunately created. So he treats her as such
Yes but that was in Season 3 after seeing what Camilla's cancer did to her. No one could have predicted that the show would have Deb be left braindead from a stray gunshot even though she was shot worse by Christine in Season 4 and got through that. Season 8's ending wasn't originally how they planned to end the show so that line wasn't foreshadowing. Neither was Dexter asking Arthur if he should fake his death and start over at the end of Season 4. Some people treat those 2 lines like Season 8 foreshadowing but they're not.
I think its the show intent that Dexter is shown to be super hypocritical when it comes to justifying his killing. He's just like every other killer he just thinks his reason is superior. Well the reason he kills is to kill but he justifies that by killing anyone he seems bad unless it comes to almost getting caught then he'll kill innocent people. I think season 3 highlights it best because Miguel and Dexter are essentially the same person
@@sanicspeed1672 Yes, I did and they are...Dexter does the same thing but preaches a different song. Don't forget the show is shot heavily bias in Dexter's perspective and lens that hes in the right. But, looking through that they are the same. He monologues that hes not but then the show fails to show that at all. The show does this so much it seems to think it's okay to imply everything happens off scene but then show is the opposite. The best example is with his son, all the side characters kept saying he was such a dedicated present father but then the audience sees the exact opposite of that. Dont use anything Dexter says credit, all his monologues are hypocritical and bias af. Like I said there's so many instances specifically in s3 where is preaching and justifying one thing while doing the exact opposite of what he's saying. I did watch s3, I unfortunately watched all 8 seasons. I really dislike the show so I'm also bias but even putting that aside there's no denying Dexter is a hypocrite and narc.
You need to talk about writer's burnout. Although writing is a creative endeavour, getting a gig on a long running great show. It seems to be a poisoned chalice for the writers who are employed by a corporate system more focused on milking their property. And the writers seem to burnout long before the actual end of their gig, like someone who's spent too many years on the same production line. I'd like to hear your take on this tendency.
Bev true but they could have the whole show planned out but then it gets ruined because the showrunners want to milk the series for as long as possible or want a completely different ending than what was originally planned
I don't think any of the writers on the show were particularly talented. At least, it didn't seem so, to me. John Lithgow was able to elevate one season through sheer force of his acting, and then it went right back to mediocre, predictable. 🤔 ... Not that I was able to watch the whole series. I forced myself to finish the season after Lithgow's exit, but I just couldn't bring myself to put in the time, after that. It was just so predictable, and when not predictable, only because of the use of ridiculous deus ex machina plot points. If burnout was the real problem, the writing would have been fantastic in the earlier seasons... But it wasn't. It didn't gradually get worse, it was always kind of half-assed.
Dexter is one of those shows that needed to end with 5 or 6 seasons and they should have begun setting up the series finale with Season 4. The lumberjack ending was a definite copout and Game of Thrones series finale reminded me a lot of Dexter's finale. Dexter is also like a superhero in a way. A superhero is only as great as the villain. Dexter has had great villains like Biney or Trinity Killer but some of those later season antagonists were weak by comparison. Basically, better and more concise writing would have helped.
@@krankarvolund7771 I wasn't comparing their runs in terms of number of seasons. I was specifically referring to their series finales. Dexter becoming a lumberjack, Jon joining the wildlings in the North- both were copout, exile endings for the protagonists.
@@toneriggz Except when you said that "Dexter is one of those shows that needed to end with 5 or 6 seasons and they should have begun setting up the series finale with Season 4." :p But yeah, I get what you say ^^
@@krankarvolund7771 Right but I specifically compared the series finales. I wasn't comparing their overall runs, only the finales. GoT had it's own issues as you pointed out before.
I think the writers wrote themselves into a corner. The whole idea of Dexter was that the was emotionally unattached and not really likeable. Then they made him a family man, a good father, a lover and brother exploring intimacy and connection. Which is kinda problematic if your protagonist is supposed to be a socio-/psychopath. The show also, as it progressed, kept making promises for things that they then backtracked from. What was the point in making Debra fall in love with Dexter, if there was zero impact of that? The writers promised another juicy moral abomination to explore and then got cold feet and never even consider going into the territory of incest, even between adopted siblings. What was the point in having a really interesting religiously motivated killer when the show doesn't go all the way in the dark sides of it? The show became vanilla while claiming it is BDSM long before the finale. After a point you stop caring if something actually happens because it all ends up being so smooth that no edge is even to spot. As for the very finale with the lumberjack storyline, I found that laughable. C'mon, whole eight seasons you told us that he has this itch, this urge to kill every couple of weeks or months. And suddenly that would have stopped? Also, a serial killer is much easier to spot and identify in the countryside, so what was the point in moving out of the city? That ending was not only unsatisfying, it was also unlogical in the show's universe rules.
We should have seen it coming though. Remember in the first episode Dexter described himself as asexual?? He said sex is undignified and he doesn't understand it. Then he sleeps with Rita once and turns into a horndog. Like.. that's not how it works. And that was in season 1. They probably always planned to turn Dexter boring.
that's the point dude, he has feelings, but keeps trying to convince himself to not have any. In later seasons he starts to learn to allow himself to feel them only to experience all the pain, that can come from them, and then decides in the last episode to shut them down again. Very sad and tragic, and I actually liked the ending because of it .. I understand tho, why many people don't and where that comes from. Sry for my english btw :)
The bad ending was more than just how the went about Dexter's character arc. This video is good but completely misses all the talking points about season 8 quite literally being so lazily made. Plot points making no sense, logic being thrown out the window. Introducing side plots such as Masuka's daughter onto to just never go anywhere with it and the viewers are left confused. Shoehorning an antagonist for Dexter to kill so abruptly near the end of the season, choices such as Harrison being left with Hannah to go live in Argentina. Dr Vogel being used in a very strange way to try and redefine Dexter's identity and wasted potential for a proper seasonal conflict and i can go on and on The final season was just... off. It had no direction or real solid overarching premise, just a bunch of random shit thrown all together within the confines of the limited amount of episodes left and it was just a mess. I actually really liked season 7. The cliffhanger was gripping and they had this amazing opportunity to carefully figure out how they are going to deal with the Deb/Laguerta situation. They just fucked it up Thank fuck we have news now that the original showrunner who left after season 4 is reviving the show for one last season next year. I'll give it a chance, it's our only hope for a proper sendoff Edit: welp they messed it up again lol
@@meriemradhi5481 Daniel's whole thing of being a manchild who killed his brother for getting more attention from their mother than he did and projecting that hatred onto Dexter was a bad motive.

Thank YOU! I Did not know that they are creating another final season⁉️😱 ...i actually was Very Dissatisfied & felt that the ending season was Very "Deflated" when it first aired. But rewatching the whole series last year with my husband (his first time watching) 6 years after the 8th season first aired. I can Totally See how they made it much more closer to Reality than not. Because in life, we always get what we Need. In real life, the Police watch each others backs and constantly cover up their own deliberate murders of innocent civilians. Shit like what happened to Deb happens to the people who are closest to the "Bomb💣 Explosion", a.k.a. Dexter. & Moralisticly speaking, Deb DID Stand By Her oddly pseudo-incestuous relationship with her "Brother", rather than by her life long precived "Duty" to society & to her job ethics. Dext's relationships with his co-workers showed MAJOR Growth for ALL The characters in the show, because without evering spiritual growth towards ultimate Enlightenment, Stagnation Equals Death & serves no real purpose in the Universe. Even Vince's estranged daughters showcase how Unexpected Opportunities for GROWTH Can be Thrust Upon Us withering we like it or not? & how ULTIMATELY It is up to US AS INDIVIDUALS Harboring Freewill, wither to answer the call for further growth, OR to just continue on in a Spiritual Plateau. EVEN "Science Is Like A 14 Inch Strap-On" Masouka is Given a Happy Ending with his chance to further grow as a person via his newfound Parenting role for a Young Beautiful Daughter, in order for him to start learning how to love, Respect, & view & treat women, young beautiful women in particular, in another angle & thus, helping him to be more well rounded 3 Dimensional, rather than just a creepy little Perv. Which let's face it, he'll Always be that, & its what we love about him😁🥰💟 but with the introduction of his daughter, we get to feel that just cause the show ends with Deb dead, Dexter in Spiritual Isolation from all the people whom helped his character develop & grow, his punishment for all of his "God's Hand Killer" deeds, does get punishment & its a fate worse than death, because he now FEELS Things. Death would be a cop-out for his character to easily get out & get away with those things. He saved numerous lives by his actions in taking out the predators but he was also a "predator", preying ON Predators. So he did a Ton Of Good😇 but he still wasn't allowed a Happily Ever After. I see things a lot more now with a much wider perspective in my 30's than when I first watched the show in my early 20's
For me the ending was just dissapointing. Dexter has no narration at the end, no final words, the show kills off Deb, one of the most beloved characters, Dexter leaves Harrison, the only thing he seems genuinely proud of, and there is no resolution for any of the other secondary characters. How can Quinn go on when he has watched the love of his life get turned into a brain dead body? Does Dexter now just have the ability to decide that he won't kill anyone as a lumberjack? The show really just threw itself away. This show is my favorite show of all time, but it easily could have ended at season 4. Thank you for your time.
I never interpreted it to mean he stopped killing but rather had to change his methods and just didn't have his " friends and family" to even pretend to be normal with anymore.
They half addressed this in the final seasons; Dexter realises that he was only convinced he was a certain way simply because Harry told him he was when he was young, and that it's possible Harry was mistaken.
Only is season 1 did he not have emotions. In every other season he is clearly a person who is convincing himself he's a psychopath when he's clearly not and has never been.
I always thought with Rita it was an accident and more to use her as a cover to appear normal and then later the women that knew his dark passenger and accepted it was a big deal because he was able to be his true self without hiding and that's what he liked - But then those women didn't follow the same code and/or became a threat or, as with Lumen, she just moved on from the need after her vengeance quest was over.
Wow just made a similar comment before I saw yours. Ya as an aro ace myself, Dexter's internal monologue about sex in the FIRST EPISODE is exactly how I feel, it was the most amazing thing to hear. And then he sleeps with Rita once and bam he's a normal horny dude from then on. Wtf writing is that!!?
I’d watch a reboot of Harrison going on a mission to find out about his dad and discovering that he was a killer and then also alive. EDIT: I want to say I can predict the future, but there was no way they could have properly done the show otherwise. He was his only true loose end and arguably the worst of Dexter’s decisions in the original finale.
@@Josh729J sociopathy is learned, psychopathy is born with..dexter wasn't a psychopath..psychopaths are completely unable to feel empathy or remorse, he was a sociopath. unless his kid remembers his blood birth like his father, he can actually turn out ok :v
A character like the ideal that the writers of Dexter were seeking, a true psychopathic protagonist, could never really exist on mainstream television. I think that such a character is just impossible for most audiences to relate to, and that's why Dexter was humanized so much as the series progressed. He was perfectly fine in the few couple of seasons but once he began being faced with moral dilemmas that most *normal* characters would struggle with, he should have instead shirked the emotions of them and dealt with them in the same methodical, calculating manner that he had done previously. I think it's a limitation on the writers, too. I mean, how many characters that were even remotely like Dexter had been written in televisions history with which to make a model from? I think it was almost inevitable that they were going to "normalize" his behavior with time, because in order to faithfully write him as a true psychopath, the writers would need to have been psychopaths themselves.
Unfortunately you are wrong, as the years go by , instead of natural selection we have a capitalistic selection and capitalism favors sociopaths/psychopaths, that is why, gradually, western society cultivates more sociopaths. They might not all be blatant murderers like Dexter but they idolize ruthlessness and lack of conscience towards other human beings. So these people idolize Dexter on an intellectual level.
He could, but not as the sole protagonist. Check out the series Hannibal starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen. I like the way Dexter was in the series, regardless, though, he remains one of my favorite protagonists in fiction.
Is it bad that I wanted him caught? Like I wanted to see everyone’s reactions when they found out who he was, and who he killed. At least they could have had everyone find out what he did but he gets away. I was just waiting for the reveal episode and never got it 😪 I know people feel differently so lmk what you thought!
That's one reason the majority of people watched it. To see how Dexter would get caught and Miami Metro's reaction to finding out he was the Bay Harbour Butcher. But they never got that because Showtime had no guts and wanted to just drag the series out.
Interesting yes, best? Hmmm. Trinity would be my choice for best. From stellar acting to the way it was written and his final revenge. Kinda hard to beat the Trinity. So much so they should have just ended the show after him.
It actually did make sense since Laguerta already showed her she had evidence that would also incriminate her in Travis's murder. She knew way too much to live through that situation. Maybe Deb could have argued for a plea bargin in exchange for killing her brother, but she would still very likely face a long prison sentence, the loss of her career, etc. Also we are supposed to believe that Deb is actually IN love with Dexter as more than just a brother. Its not unrealistic to believe someone would do something crazy like that for her lover
It bothered me too. I was convinced by the show that Debbie's integrity didn't swing that way, and I was excited that Dexter's undoing would be his sister, who is possibly the only person in the world who truly loves him. They "broke" the tragedy by having to shoot extra seasons for the ka-ching ka-ching.
I’ve always liked this ending more than most other people. I feel he felt responsible for deb being brain dead and that’s why he buried her with his victims. He felt she was his victim
The thing about Dexter...He was always mostly lying to himself in his inner monologues. Sociopaths never do the self-reflection thing very well...even if they are self-possessed. Self-reflection is the biggest component of human empathy.
@@jdking5366 Right not only is it an echo of the first episode but it leaves you wondering. Is he still killing criminals or did he fully become a monster?
Honestly one of the most hearthbreaking scenes was when Deb was in the hospital and Quinn came to visit her. She says "I love you" and he didn't hear her and she's wheeled away before she can repeat herself. I felt so numb
I am still on season 8 ep 4, but that sounds heartbreaking. Personally, I thought that the season 7 finale was the most heartbreaking because that's when Deb died, spiritually.
I think this video missed the point. fans weren't upset that he never get caught. Over the show, you see Dexter grow. you see that he has a chance to become normal. the issue is that the very last scene scene he reverts back to season 1. So we watched this person grow only but throws it away, it makes the view feel like the whole show was a waste.
EXACTLY. I normally hate the cliche happy endings, but literally the whole show was building up to him becoming more and more normal and realizing that he DOES have emotions. This is definitely a situation where I wanted to see him and Hannah be able to start anew in Argentina with Harrison. The ending we got barely gave any closure and was super weak. Sucks because it’s my favorite show of all time and I just can’t get this ending out of my head
I disagree, I think his emotions and the fact that his terrible actions kept catching up to him in unpredictable ways, he finally realised that he puts those closest to him in danger, it was an emotional reaction when he decided to isolate himself
@@athirdwhy9734 the thing is psychopathy is rated on a scale, just because someone has some psychopathic traits doesn't necessarily mean they lack all emotions, in the show the narration is Dexter's inner thoughts, so why would he be thinking the complete opposite of what you're saying?

I always thought Dexter was manipulated into becoming a killer by his paranoid father, who read too much into a few childhood incidents, and decided to train him to be a perfect killing machine. A better parent might have helped it all turn out very differently.
Me too. His dad was a cop who was tired of seeing people get away with horrendous crimes and used Dexter to get his own form of revenge. The dad realized he made a terrible mistake and offed himself. I wonder how Dexter would’ve turned out had he not been raised by Harry.
Kaitlyn Durham but u guys also don’t realize harry didn’t even make the code so the whole murderer of murderer things was the psychologists idea and he was iffy but went along with it cause he thought it’s what was best then turn him in. Then he realized he was wrong
That would have been an interesting twist, especially because that psychologist vogler gave Harry the idea. Vogler had a habit of psychoanalysing traumatised kids too much so she was wrong about Dexter. And it would explain Dexter’s often human-like behaviour. In season 8 they could have had Dexter find out (through some kind of test) that he’s not actually a psychopath in the same way that many of his victims like Oliver Saxon are and that Vogler and harry misdiagnosed him. Then Dexter gets so enraged at being conditioned to believe he needs to kill (something that eventually caused Harry’s suicide due to the realisation of what he sees Dexter is capable of) that he hurts or kills vogler in some way and then things spiral out of control. Then, the audience are left wondering: Is Dexter a psychopathic killer or just a broken man? Reinforcing the show’s main theme about moral ambiguity and what actually makes someone good, bad or sick.
I was always convinced that dexters cop step dad knew dexters real dad was a serial killer and didn’t want to tell Dexter, so it was in his blood to be a killer
I was sad when Rita died because I really liked her as a character and I felt like she kept Dexter grounded if there even was a season 6 I would want the season 6 to be Dexter going on a serious downward spiral and his sister catching him and either he has to kill his sister or be turned in that would have been amazing I could never get past season 5 and I was always like is it just me
@@chxrbb_dxllhouse5403 I agree. They should have had Dexter abandon the code after Rita's death, and he becomes more careless and sloppy. Then have his brother take the place of ghost Dad. Then his sister discovers him in the season 5 finale, and season 6 is the man hunt.
Part of the reason it sucked so much was because the show was held so high, by itself and its fans. Way longer fall than if it was a less cared about show.
@@DeathnoteBB it's because the first 4 seasons are written by a Genius called GRRM and the rest are written by two delusional untalented writers that were narcissistic enough to think they can end it in a satisfying way. and they're so out of touch with reality they probably still think they did a great job but we're not smart enough to recognize it somehow.
Once Hannah was introduced in season 7, everything just fell apart. She had no redeeming qualities and Dexter's relationship with Hannah was inconsistent with the character. Of course regularly changing show runners and a host of 20 writers probably explains the inconsistencies in character, story and quality.
I like the idea of Dexter having to make the choice of killing an innocent person or not to avoid getting caught. It would be especially interesting if he had to make that decision about Deb rather than having her on his side. It would answer the question of whether he can feel love and empathy to any extent
I expected throughout the series that the sister would turn out to be a serial killer. Now that would have been the ultimate conflict and consequence. Get him to change, to genuinely care, to have a run in with empathy only to have it all destroyed with having to make his sister stop. But...nah. Show had a worse idea.
Epicword I wouldn’t consider it as a film; only an epilogue from BB. I assume you were expecting a reaction to Skylar & Walt jr after hearing the passing of Walter White. But it was only focused on Jesse’s side of the story...
Ending up in a Florida penitentiary would have been a great way to force him to accept who he really is and take responsibility for his past actions That would have been so satisfying but not as complex and thought provoking as letting him get away with it. I watched the whole Breaking Bad series before I started Dexter and one of the things that made me hate this character the most was that he'd never admit to himself to he was. Walter White gives himself the name Heisenberg wants everyone to know it unless it means getting caught by the law. "Say my name" is one of my favorite scenes. Dexter won't admit it even when he's about to kill someone on the table. The covertness and cognitive dissonance was what made the character to fascinating and terrifying to me.
Terrible idea, I always wanted Dexter to get away with it, because too many times in tv and shows do the bad guys loose, I find it refreshing when the bad guys win, normally I root for villains
Damn I didn't know that. Stopped at when he & what's her face were together. But what I never understood was how many freaking serial killers are in Florida?
I got bored towards the end it felt like it was just dragging out but oh my god that ending was just atrocious. I wish it would’ve ended it with Dexter just killing himself in that storm I would’ve loved that.
i just got showtime this year-came in at about the middle of the seasons-after the finale-i was NOT HAPPY-i missed it so much-i went back to the beginning and am watching a couple of episodes a night-i've been trying to think how they could start it up again
I think the reason dexter started to become more human is because he was never really emotionless in the first place, he thinks he is because his adoptive father and psychiatrist basically conditioned him to see himself that way by treating him like he was a secret psychopath and always would be no matter what.
Lol I love the ending. You're all crazy. He does get what he deserves. he learns that he's not quite a sociopath like he was told but instead the victim of conditioning gets teased with potential happily-ever-after will be able to explore his new emotions and his reconciliation that he has them but then in an arrogant effort to prove that he's not controlled by his impulses he let somebody live that he should kill which results in his sister being killed and his entire Escape scenario being derailed resolving himself to a secluded tormented Life as a recluse lumberjack that's still playing the role of a sociopath but knowing now that he feels everything and is left with massive regret that will most likely haunt him the rest of his days.
Imo after Rita's death the show kind of dulled down but it was still amazing and then the ending really sucked, like I can't even understand why they did that
Rita's death was tragic but not the end of the world. It could of continued as Dexter trying to be a father and his son's evolution and not throwing romances everywhere. Lumen made no sense added anything exciting to the plot, hannah was there for the sex part😅 so much potential for Dexter, and they butcherred it
My take: That ending made me sick. I was so invested in the show and the story line build I'd anticipated. I will never recover from the painfully stupid endings of Game of thrones and Dexter
When you really love a show it’s not the most important thing in the world...but stories DO matter in the human experience. A lot. And when they fuck it up so royally, a la Dexter and GoT, it really fucking sucks. It’s bitter and the disappointment lingers forever.
Something to consider about Dexter is that, for him, killing is an addiction, similar to how many of us use alcohol, porn, food, sex, video games or drugs. Like Dexter, we find ourselves sometimes hating our patterns of bingeing. We try to abstain, but then we eventually relapse on what we were trying to control, proving that our addiction is still controlling us. There is a phrase in addiction that "If you hang around a barber shop, you will eventually get a haircut", which emphasizes that the only way to stop your addictive behavior is to keep yourself away from the people and places that feed into your addiction. Through his work at Miami Metro, Dexter had endless access to murderers that he could kill justifiably to feed his addiction and still keep Harry's Code. His conflict was how to be a serial killer and still fit in with society...oh, and not get caught. Now, as a lumberjack, he has a job which requires minimal socialization. So, he is no longer needing to pretend to fit in, nor is he using his job to feed his addiction. Addiction is also fueled by stress. We may have expectations that we feel ill-equipped to handle, so we procrastinate by indulging in the addictive behavior that gives us immediate gratification rather than facing a task we might fail at. By placing himself in a lifestyle that requires fewer social skills, Dexter also reduces his daily stress and therefore reduces his need to feed that "Dark Whatever". It does make perfect sense...at least for now.
I agree. My theory is that very few shows are any good after the fourth season, maybe fifth. There are some exceptions, but not many. This series would have been great if they ended it in season four with the death of Rita. With some small changes in the story arcs, they could also have built up a confrontation with Deb that season as she figures out what Dexter is and he loses everything.
I worked on that show. Unfortunately, it suffered from shuffling a lot of its initial creative and executive staff in an attempt to wrap it up, keep up with actors’ other commitments and redistribute writers to other incoming shows to the network, all during the peak “post-trinity” seasons
That's interesting to hear. Not doubting any of what you claim, as it makes sense regarding how the industry works. I quite enjoyed it all even the ending. Not to say I enjoyed every bit of the show, but the parts I didnt enjoy served a bigger purpose and yall did a fine job.
Me and my brother, we did a marathon today so we could finish it 😳 And then after we watched the last episode, he saw the article that came out two hours ago. The world's weird.
One really bad thing I noticed in season 8 ep 1 was when Angel had to say things in a very out of character way, just to give us context. He said something like "it's been 6 months...", which completely broke the illusion/immersion. Instead, they could have just shown a "6 months later" screen-card. The dialogue got really sloppy at the end.
When Debra fell in love with Dexter that's when I lost all respect for the show runners and stopped watching. The finale of season 5 should have been the series finale, with a bit better conclusion. I liked Julia Stiles character too and think that her arc was very well done.
For me, it was after John Lithgow's arc ended. John Lithgow elevated the show to heights it had never been before, and when he exited, it went back to its mediocre, predictable self... But since the audience KNEW it could be better, it hurt more so than it would if we had never seen Lithgow's season. It went from intriguing, bone-chilling, sitting at the edge of your seat kind of thrill, back to "meh." Lithgow was both the best and worst thing to happen to the series, IMO. 😅 That's the only season I can still remember.
Well that was a bad ending. The show played with the idea that Dexter can be human, can be just fine living his life, and at the end he's like, "nah bruh I'll just leave my son with another serial killer, that'll definitely be a better idea than looking out for him myself." Not to mention, Deb finally gets back to her friends, her old life, Quinn and her are back together and looking good, and boop, gets shot. I can't even begin to describe how disappointed I am in this ending.
Personally I think the ending shows that he chose killing over his own family. That’s why he had to make a new life. He knew going to Argentina wouldn’t make the urge stop and he didn’t want to drag his wife and son into it like what happened to deb.
Well, as I interpreted from the show, he was able to control his urge, killing was no more a need for him after he met Hannah So I guess, after moving to Argentina he would have stopped killing
The show was sputtering ever since they killed off Julie Benz's character. I was hoping that they would redeem themselves with a satisfying ending but no. I pretty much just rewatch through S4 and that's when the show ends for me.
Spinoff: Harrison. Even though he lived in Argentina (mindset, place). He was unfulfilled because he had memories of his father, Dexter. Like his father he has an act for vengeance, justice, and finding the truth. Harrison is now 17, and keeps having the childhood and reoccurring nightmare of his father calling him while he is strapped on the table. He sleuths his way to finding out what really happened to his Aunt Deb. Goes back to Miami and along the way finds out his father is still alive. The show is about Harrison knowing more about his orgins and Dexter's whereabouts. His rage comes with everyone claiming he is dead but he knows deep down that is not true. Hanna goes looking for Harrison. Harrison eventually finds Dexter.
Nicky Stee Scott Buck also got his grubby hands on 2 Marvel properties: Inhumans and Iron Fist. Then immediately drove them both to silly unrecognizable endings. When I see his name associated with a project, I immediately skip it (for my mental health).
The Dexter and Hannah sex scene in Season 7 was something right out of Buck's fantasies for sure. Dexter went from having no feelings for Hannah whatsoever and being about to kill her to cutting her free and fucking her on the table and then he was obsessed with her for the rest of the show.
I agree season 5 had it's problems, but I personally was still invested to some degree at that point. The main story and Lumen's whole character arc were kind of 'eh'.. I was way more into Quinn and his ex-cop friend hot on Dexter's trail, something I thought would continue into season 6, but they just kind of dropped it.. As for season 7 there was a brief uptick in quality, especially toward the end when Laguerta was closing in on Dex.. That incest plotline though? Barf...
I just don't see dexter dying by getting killed or him being imprisoned. I'm down with the idea of him losing everything and being banished cause I'm pretty sure that would punish him more.
@@jenmuck they had to leave it open in case they wanted to create a 10 episode mini-series explaining what life is like for him in the winter wonderland where he restarted his life.
Only thing about Dexter ending was that it ended. This series has to be the absolute best series ever made! You feel each episode, each season. Just watched again for the hundredth time..
Hannah showed up because TPTB didn't have the balls to really tackle Deb's feelings for Dex in more than a superficial way. So they used her to avoid any possible romance relationship or even get their hands really dirty in a narrative that deals with it.
She poisoned completely innocent people for kicks but the show tried to pretend she was a vigilante type like Dexter who killed people worse than herself.
Season 5 would’ve been better if Rita’s death caused him to lose it and Brian replaced Harry as the voice in Dexter’s head. Now Brian is the antagonist again and by the time he comes back, everyone knows he’s the Bay Harbor Butcher and the manhunt is on and he gets caught at the end. If they wanted to do another season after that, they could’ve have lead up to his execution
Last season would be all the characters speaking with him and all and the ending would be him getting the electric chair like his father showed that one guy getting
Worse ending of all time. Debra killing Lagherta was totally out of character and it was bad for the story. Dexter should have been exposed to everyone as the Bay Harbor butcher in the season 7 finale and season 8 would have been him and Debra on the run.
Killing off Deb was very mean-spirited on the part of the writer's. Like, hadn't she suffered enough?! And Dexter just casually abandoning Harrison was ridiculous.
Dexter was neeeeever a psychopath. He is caring and loving and has emotions. I was unfortunate enough to get to know a psychopath. They can fake emotions perfectly but when they don’t need someone anymore they get rid of them. They use and abuse. Dexter never was like that.
thank you. that's what makes him an anomaly. too many people want to put him in a box of a 'realistic typical serial killer.' he certainly wouldn't be compelling or interesting or layered if he was. he's protective, has meaningful relationships, doesn't play with people for the sake of playing with heads like psychopaths do just to see what they can get away with. he only ever did what he had to do to cover his ass not for sport. dexter was also self aware and wanted to be better.
Nah. It was when starting in Season 5 the show went from a crime drama about a vigilante serial killer to a bad family and romance drama. Hannah was just a symptom of that second part.
I didn't buy any of his actions with Hannah. It was pure lust with her, not love. Even knowing she killed innocents and then tried to murder Deb, even going as far as to say he could never trust her, somehow she's back in the picture and the one he wants to run away with and start a new life. As if we hadn't seen how in touch with his emotions he got to be with Lumen. He was even able to tell Astor he loved her that season. He said being with Lumen didn't make him feel like a monster cuz she didn't see him as one. But sure, Hannah was "the one"🙄
That’s what an executive producer wanted but he left after the ice truck killer season he wanted everything to be flashbacks and in the series finale Dexters on the death table about to get the needle seeing everyone he’s killed or was responsible for killing
Not every season. One of the most common compliments people give season 6 is that its finale (Deb walking in on Dexter killing Travis) had huge ramifications that couldn't be retconned. There was no way to go back to the status quo.
@@blizzagasaga8676 I agree season 6, & 4 had consequences for those AROUND Dexter. But Dexter sees collateral damage (Rita and Deb) but can't quit his addiction, and he's ultimately unmoved
I think the show started as a way to show a psychopath, and the writers began to realize that if he had no real emotion toward family or his sister then it would be harder for audiences to empathize with him, but also it would be hard to believe he would even follow Harry's code if family meant nothing to him. So I think they decided to go with a sociopath that is misdiagnosed as a psychopath, because that is the only way to create the emotional discovery/growth arc. If you think about it, the show has a major emotional arc as the audience follows and roots for Dexter as he discovers he can love and in the final episodes it seems so strong that it overwhelms his need to kill. The main theme of the show for me, aside from the emotional arch, is about the consequences on the people around Dexter because of the way he hunts serial killers and how that can be very dangerous if they are on to him. So to me the finale does make sense when viewed through that lens, with Deb dying being similar to Rita dying because he didn't kill the guy when he had the chance. If you really think about it, the natural ending would be Dexter realizing that the way he is puts his loved ones in danger and making the difficult decision that they are safer without him in their lives. Him heading for the storm certainly seems like a suicide attempt to die with Deb, but the ending doesn't actually spell out whether he wanted to kill himself and failed, or if his survival instincts were too strong and all he could do was find somewhere to disappear. It leaves it up to the viewer and I actually like how miserable he looks considering all that has happened.
I tapped out around the time Deb fell in love with him, so I didn't see the final season. And shan't, considering how panned it's been. I just live in a world where many of these finales that made me swear at the screen don't exist. HIMYM, Lost, GoT, Dexter... I just go with my head cannon. It's better.
Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter must have said "No we're not doing that" because it got dropped in Season 7. Can't blame them because around the time Season 6 was filmed they'd gotten divorced. And the fact that despite not being blood related Dexter and Deb were brought up together as brother and sister so it was pseudo incest was just weird.
The series should have ended with him paying a price. something like Dexter turning himself in because Deb is charged with a murder he committed, or him sacrificing his life to save Deb/his child from a mistake he has made. Alternatively, I would settle for a happy ending of Dexter living a normal life with his family as a changed man. Cliche, but at least you can be happy for him. Instead, we got emptiness.
Emptiness seems like a better ending for a man like him, he'll have to suffer in a new type of way for the shit he did and didn't do during his old life. I wished for a more satisfying end for us too, but this plays out well to me because it was always kinda meant to happen. He wanted to feel nothing after experiencing emotion, and now he's feeling nothing in a new way.
Deb killing him was the most logical conclusion, she was an honest cop, brother or not, she was either putting him behind bars, or killing him...but what did they do? they made her fall in love with him. WTF.
@@Jose-se9pu i mean it kinda makes sense, dexter was always a constant in her life, protecting her always being there, nut it was really kinda out of nowhere, love him or not i really feel like she would have shot him, i mean she tried to kill both of them lol
I never had a problem with Dexter’s emotional growth. The relationships he initially cultivated as mere cover grew deeper and that raised the stakes! The problem was the weak writing from Season 5 and beyond. I couldn’t get past Dex not knowing how to grieve Rita. All that character development was thrown right out the window!
glad to see im not the only one who appreciated the emotional development. from the start he says he feels nothing but as the show progresses we are made to question that. so many fans insist he felt nothing the whole 8 seasons. that would make him dull. it seems that they gave him deep relationships only to devolve him into an emotional retard at their whim. he loved rita but is suddenly retarded when she passes. he was affectionate and comforting with rita but he has a hard time comforting deb who hes the closest with? he meets lumen and is properly emotional with her. he meets his son after years apart and hes emotionally retard again. he never had a problem showing affect to his son. the writers evolve and devolve him at their discretion. i recognize writing can be inconsistent at times. i will always see him as a character who has a lot of emotional growth, with moments if bad writing thrown in for laughs or what not.
everyone who asks me about this show gets told the same thing, "I really enjoyed the show until the last episode, if you watch the series just never watch the ending"
@OP he consistently says I destroy everything I love and he eventually ends up alone, just because it is not the ending that you wanted doesn't mean that the ending wasn't appropriate.
While I definitely see the appeal of a protagonist with no redeeming emotions but a code, but I think giving emotions, at least to some extent was a good choice. I liked in the beginning where Dexter seemed to have no strong attachment to anyone, but I doubt that kind of character could work in a show for more than 2 or 3 seasons. More importantly, I loved the reveal of Dexter going into the blood room modeled after his childhood and going into shock. Not only was a great twist, but it added more depth and mystery towards his character. It made you wonder if there was more to him than just a psychopath, how he ended up this way, and if he could be better. Which I think is a better choice for a show with 8 seasons (granted it probably didn't need to last that long). I also think his growing attachment and even love towards Deb, Astor, and Cody was a good choice. It added more of an internal conflict to him since it's no longer just getting caught that was a problem for him but people he cared about. Him choosing Deb over his brother also wouldn't have been as effective. Losing Astor and Cody from the show was also when the stakes got way less interesting since he no longer had as much of a double life to balance out. His romances were a little muddier. Lila makes perfect sense. He was never in love with her, he just thought that she could be someone who could accept him for who he is, along with some sexual attraction. She was more of a drug for him than anything else. I think Rita was a good character and that it's good that Dexter grew to care about her, but I never really bought him being in love with her. Granted it makes the season 4 finale a lot better having him care about her. Lumen was a good foil to Dexter before they fell in love. That was just stupid and pointless. Hannah sucks though. Aside from not being very interesting, she just doesn't add much. I liked season 7 where Dexter was forced to choose between someone who was like Dexter and accepted him or Deb. But season 8 ruined her by taking away any of those consequences and making it a "love conquers all" story that doesn't work for Dexter. awkward weirdo and not a serial killer. Instead of his two lives merging, it feels like his fake one took over.
They should have made it so they were lying when they matched his dental records to the body and he was really alive but working with people secretly to take Dexter down then he could have returned in a later season and been Dexter's big enemy of the season.
@@jcriniti2644 THIS would've been a great finale! Loved Doakes and he was so right about Dexter the whole time. He didn't deserve that death, man this would've been his justice, Dexter's too in a way.
@@Xehanort10 That is what should have happened in Season 7 and that is what I suspected what was going to happen when I saw the previews for the episode but then it was just Doakes in a flashback. Still good but it could have been so much better if he faked his death.
Ehhh I mean I agree season 2 was the best, the cat and mouse with doakes and dexter was amazing but season 4 was also amazing cuz of trinity and probably could've ended at that season cuz of rita's death, but I think if season 5 was tweaked a bit it has potential to be a great ending
@@IceQueen975 Exactly!! SJW's just cannot be pleased. I am writing a novel, and had to change the antagonist's race because a friend pointed out that people would scream racism if he was black. While here, people are screaming racism because an anti hero character is white. I just don't get what goes on in their tiny brains to play the racism card for every fucking thing.
I actually, think Dexter having human connection even though his a serial killer was not only the most interesting part of his character, it also makes the most sense. I just don't buy that a serial killer who only kills other serial killers would have no emotion whatsoever. If that's the case then why even have a code? Why not just kill anyone if Dex has no emotional connection to anyone? I think where the final season ultimately failed is wanting Dex to remain a sympathetic antihero to the bitter end. The entire premise of Dexter is empathizing with a serial killer but once the audience can no longer sympathize with him or rationalize his actions, that is when the show is over. And getting the audience to no longer root for Dexter should have been the goal of the final season. But the writers simply couldn't or wouldn't put the audience in the uncomfortable position where Dex was just serial killer as opposed to anti-hero who happens to be a serial killer.
I wish it had a more happy ending where it forwards months later after Debs death. Dexter is in Argentina, at the beach with Hanna and Harrison. He looks at his son playing in the sand, turns and looks at Hanna next to him. And the final shot would be him staring through the distance of the ocean, remembering all the times he went out on the water dumping victims, then Debs body. The tone could be a bit sad, but also hopeful for Dexter's new life and what it would lead to.
The ending was very out of character for him like he would NEVER in a million years EVER abandon Harrison. And don’t get me started on how they just killed off deb at the last second
I hate the fact that Harrsion will NEVER see his brother and sister again.
Yeliz Diril Didn’t Dexter think he was just gonna get Harrison killed if he stuck around? He never thought in a million years he would get Deb harmed in anyway but he did. He consumes all he loves.
they couldn't kill Dexter...Showtime wouldn't have allowed them. Their hands were tied so they had to punish Deb instead.
I would be happy if he continue his work in South America with his love and son
After Rita died Dexter asked Debra if anything happened to him would he take care of Harrison. Then he left but he ended up coming back
Even Michael C. Hall called the ending one of the most unsatisfying finales of all time.
True, when even the lead actor criticises the finale, you KNOW that you're in dark territory! 😿
Back then people didnt see game of throne’s ending of course
It sucks because he was so in Six feet under which is one of the best series finale.
Wow, thats says alot
It’ll never be as unsatisfying as Gossip girl’s ending
My fiancee had never seen Dexter, I was in the middle of re-watching the show and she asked how it ended. I told her he became a lumberjack, she thought I was joking and had to Google it to believe it.
Why would she googled it instead of just watch it?

Lumberjack is literally just a real life manifestation of a new life, a new personality, a new place, so he can keep feeding his behaviour.. Could've been a fisherman, whatever, it's obviously trying to tell you he abandoned ship, what a psychopath serial killer with no empathy would do, to save his own skin and ability to keep doing what he does..
I don't know why, but to this day Rita's death still hit me harder than any other TV show's.

He was actually most likely a sociopath not psychopath because he wasn’t born that way rather seeing his mom killed turned him to be a sociopath
@@cristiangarciasanchez7560 he was definitely are psychopath if he was an sociopath he would be caught sooner.

At this point, The Take team should make a “Bad Finale” trope
It’s not a trope really. It sometimes just happens.
I know, the HIMYM, Gossip Girl, Seinfeld and original Roseanne finales should all be included in the hypothetical video! 📹🤔
Deb falling in love with Dexter was stupid, I really loved the brother and sister relationship they had but they ruined that at the end 😒
So. Damn. Awkward.
I absolutely hated that as well. Worst part about the show for me.
I remember reading somewhere that the showrunners had difficulty justifying why Deb would not turn Dexter in, because it is within her character to do so even if it's family. Family wasn't going to be enough to sell the idea to the audience that Deb would hide his secret for him.
I hated that he left Harrison with Hannah, rather than with his siblings.
I know dude. It doesn’t make sense. He didn’t want his son to be damaged by him or falsely raised by him, a serial killer, so he leaves his son with an even worst serial killer that kills innocent people.
No. It was perfect. She loved him and could recognize symptoms and help him.
some parts of me feel like he'll grow up normal, not like his father.
@@karlamullins6972 And Dexter couldn't? How the hell is Harrison any better off with Hannah?
Won't matter since it's returning for season 9 next year. Thankfully.
I'm still pissed about Deb's death.
I absolutely loved this show and so did my husband. I didn’t want it to ever end. I was depressed! I then found all of the other shows Michael C. Hall starred in so that did help. They need to bring Dexter back!
Everyone is. She was our sweetheart.
Rita’s death I can’t get over
I'm glad he didn't go to Argentina. I was expecting him to drown himself with Deb's body. But the fact that Jennifer Carpenter wanted Deb to die is making it easier for me 😬
it was a great story choice of the writers to do that
Dexter talks a lot about emotions for a person who says he has none.
The show simply went too long. Season 5 should've been the final season with Dexter on the run. It's such a shame that Showtime milked it to death.
It should’ve ended with him being caught

Well, as to Dexter killing Deb, she did say if she ever ended up in that condition, to just pull the plug.
And well, he did.
But why throwing her into the water like that🙁
Thanks for reminding me this!
But yea.. At least giving her a proper burial 🤷🏼♀️ why put her where the killers were dumped 😕
Esther I think it’s because since he’s responsible, since he didn’t kill Saxon, she’s another victim he unfortunately created. So he treats her as such
Eric Mugford Hmm.. I never thought about it like that. Yes maybe that’s why..
I think Jake Peralta said it best with:
"Cool motive. Still murder."
i'm your 69th like :)

Good point. Unless they already have the entire overall character arch in mind before they even begin... like with Breaking Bad for example.
@@bev9708 no WONDER that show was greatly written! so the writers had the beginning to end already established before the series began?
You know I think this would be a great premise for a new tv show
Dexter is one of those shows that needed to end with 5 or 6 seasons and they should have begun setting up the series finale with Season 4.
Yeah, but season 8 was bad because Game of Thrones needed more time to end all its narratives, that's the contrary of Dexter XD
Which is why I stopped watching Dexter at season five and never move on to any of the other seasons every time I rewatch it
@@krankarvolund7771 I wasn't comparing their runs in terms of number of seasons. I was specifically referring to their series finales. Dexter becoming a lumberjack, Jon joining the wildlings in the North- both were copout, exile endings for the protagonists.
@@toneriggz Except when you said that "Dexter is one of those shows that needed to end with 5 or 6 seasons and they should have begun setting up the series finale with Season 4." :p
But yeah, I get what you say ^^
The whole debra falling in love with dex was a hot mess
I Agree with every single word! !!
I also hated that he left Miami because the show was so interwoven with the city itself
Dr Vogel being used in a very strange way to try and redefine Dexter's identity and wasted potential for a proper seasonal conflict and i can go on and on
The final season was just... They just fucked it up
Thank fuck we have news now that the original showrunner who left after season 4 is reviving the show for one last season next year. I'll give it a chance, it's our only hope for a proper sendoff
Edit: welp they messed it up again lol

They were trying to wrap it up as fast as possible because he got cancer and was really sick
Word salad 🥗

He thinks he feels nothing, that's absolutely not true at all. Dexter's step father made him to believe that he was a psychopath.
Only is season 1 did he not have emotions. In every other season he is clearly a person who is convincing himself he's a psychopath when he's clearly not and has never been.
Dexter doesn't care about sex or romantic love than every season he falls in love with a new woman makes no sense 😒
Personally, that's what bothered me most!
@kshiftkometh The cannibal cult thing was in the 5th book wasn't it?
FACTS! My goodness. Freaking Deb too
I’d watch a reboot of Harrison going on a mission to find out about his dad and discovering that he was a killer and then also alive.
EDIT: I want to say I can predict the future, but there was no way they could have properly done the show otherwise. He was his only true loose end and arguably the worst of Dexter’s decisions in the original finale.
OH GOD YES
socio/psychopathy can technically be inherited too ;) although im not sure acquired ones can be
Remember that Harrison was 'born in blood'
@@Josh729J sociopathy is learned, psychopathy is born with..dexter wasn't a psychopath..psychopaths are completely unable to feel empathy or remorse, he was a sociopath. unless his kid remembers his blood birth like his father, he can actually turn out ok :v
you and I both know that would totally suck
Wasn't the point that he wasn't really the unfeeling psycho that his adopted father pushed him toward being?
You want to watch a remorseless psychopath? Go watch American Psycho instead of Dexter
@@phantomapprentice6749 Yeah, because people like Stalin, Mao, the Kims, Pol Pot or Ceaucescu were all so nice. Because no capitalism...
It would be a better ending.
Dexter’s brother was the best and most interesting antagonist. Change my mind.
I loved Bynie😂 I was very satisfied with his reappearance
Interesting yes, best? Hmmm. Trinity would be my choice for best. From stellar acting to the way it was written and his final revenge. Kinda hard to beat the Trinity. So much so they should have just ended the show after him.
He was such a hottie that I wished that Dexter has chosen him over Depp
Trinity.
In dexter yes but my fave tv villain is boyd Crowder
I hated when they had Deb kill Laguerta. As much as she loved her brother, it felt so unrealistic that she would shoot Laguerta point blank.
I thought that made perfect sense, disregarding all her morals for someone she loves
PUT! HIM! DOOOOWN!!!
I still think she shot the wrong person in that container.
Should've killed Dexter where his dark passenger was born...in a shipping container.
I was actually most annoyed with the fact that he left his son with a serial killer woman...

What would happen if she found out that he killed her father. They just never addressed a lot of questions the fans had
Same here! Also what did the family (grandparents and siblings) think happened to Harrison?
It was so out of character for him to do that bc dexter wouldn’t EVER abandon him like that
IndigobluBeauty Exactly!!!
I’ve always liked this ending more than most other people. I feel he felt responsible for deb being brain dead and that’s why he buried her with his victims. He felt she was his victim
I thought that was obvious
The thing about Dexter...He was always mostly lying to himself in his inner monologues. Sociopaths never do the self-reflection thing very well...even if they are self-possessed. Self-reflection is the biggest component of human empathy.
Exactly. Dexter always had emotions.
Maybe you should study psychology, you seem to know a lot about it, it should be worthwhile to pursue it as a career path

I think this video missed the point. fans weren't upset that he never get caught. Over the show, you see Dexter grow. you see that he has a chance to become normal. the issue is that the very last scene scene he reverts back to season 1.

As much as I like that idea, Dexter would most likely be on death row if he were arrested.
Terrible idea, I always wanted Dexter to get away with it, because too many times in tv and shows do the bad guys loose, I find it refreshing when the bad guys win, normally I root for villains
"People say that Prison is hell, but not for me. Surrounded by the prey my Dark Passenger hungers for.......(insert Dexter smirk) I'm in Heaven."
They killed his Sister for no damn reason.
there was a reason...
To set Deb free from pain. Deb cannot be recovered. If she alive she will handicapped.
they shouldn't have even make her get shot
Damn I didn't know that. Stopped at when he & what's her face were together. But what I never understood was how many freaking serial killers are in Florida?
Kittikorn Bounmath that’s not why. It’s what they said in the show but that’s not why Deb Died
Dexter was one of those shows that I never got bored with, and I’ve gotten bored with a lot of shows
I got bored towards the end it felt like it was just dragging out but oh my god that ending was just atrocious. I wish it would’ve ended it with Dexter just killing himself in that storm I would’ve loved that.
i just got showtime this year-came in at about the middle of the seasons-after the finale-i was NOT HAPPY-i missed it so much-i went back to the beginning and am watching a couple of episodes a night-i've been trying to think how they could start it up again
donnie mcdow I watched it for the first time this summer. I just loved it!
I got bored in few episodes after Rita's death
Agreed, except when it got to season 8 it got really really boring
Imo after Rita's death the show kind of dulled down but it was still amazing and then the ending really sucked, like I can't even understand why they did that
That season was the best throughout the show.
Rita's death was tragic but not the end of the world. It could of continued as Dexter trying to be a father and his son's evolution and not throwing romances everywhere. Lumen made no sense added anything exciting to the plot, hannah was there for the sex part😅 so much potential for Dexter, and they butcherred it
The finale of this season also surprised me, but not in a positive way.
Lmaoooo
Lul, they certainly did subvert expectations....
My take: That ending made me sick. I was so invested in the show and the story line build I'd anticipated. I will never recover from the painfully stupid endings of Game of thrones and Dexter
//I will never recover//
.
Oh you poor thing.
Ehh I'm glad he got away
It didnt surprise me, the show was on a constant decline since season 5.
Makes sense.
Its a setup for a followup series “Harrison” where his son becomes like an FBI agent or something
There has not been any follow up series yet. I doubt there ever will be.
@@susanmcguire4664 just give it another month!
Deborah's death wrecked me. It was so cheap.
I suppose the show worked, in evoking nihilistic despair.
The golden rule is stopping after season 4. Season 5 to 8 never happened.
Season 5 is underrated. Lumen is amazing. Season 7 has one of the coolest characters Isaak Sirko.
I usually stop before the two final episodes.
I enjoyed 5,6 and,7. 7 was actually very good. 8 was by far the worst in my opinion.
I skipped the 8th one
I worked on that show. Unfortunately, it suffered from shuffling a lot of its initial creative and executive staff in an attempt to wrap it up, keep up with actors’ other commitments and redistribute writers to other incoming shows to the network, all during the peak “post-trinity” seasons
@Danielle D. Minerva Always does. Remember Community?
That's interesting to hear. Not doubting any of what you claim, as it makes sense regarding how the industry works. I quite enjoyed it all even the ending. Not to say I enjoyed every bit of the show, but the parts I didnt enjoy served a bigger purpose and yall did a fine job.

I couldn't agree more.

The Deb and Dexter "romance" was really in your face but if executed it better could have been interesting.

The Ending Did Not Ruin Dexter. The Last 3 Seasons of Dexter Ruined Dexter
If you watched the video you would see that they talk about that
For me, it was after John Lithgow's arc ended.
That's the only season I can still remember.
Yup!
Season 7 was actually pretty good. 5, 6 and 8 were pretty mediocre though.
2.
Then Game of Thrones came along and made this ending look genius.
Well that was a bad ending. The show played with the idea that Dexter can be human, can be just fine living his life, and at the end he's like, "nah bruh I'll just leave my son with another serial killer, that'll definitely be a better idea than looking out for him myself."
Not to mention, Deb finally gets back to her friends, her old life, Quinn and her are back together and looking good, and boop, gets shot. I can't even begin to describe how disappointed I am in this ending.
As i recall, Dexter should have ended at season 5 at the latest.
For me after Rita’s death the show began the downhill fall....the ending was just the crescendo of how the show went
Dexter should have been caught by Deb. Sitting in jail, awaiting trial. He didn’t deserve to “win” in the end.
He was certainly always smarter than the police.
@@mrchiefbs Should have could have given himself in

Originally, the final scene would have revealed that the whole show was a flashback while he was getting executed.
@@Matter-Dark The narration would have been him telling his life story while on death row too.
Personally I think the ending shows that he chose killing over his own family. That’s why he had to make a new life.
He knew going to Argentina wouldn’t make the urge stop and he didn’t want to drag his wife and son into it like what happened to deb.
Well, as I interpreted from the show, he was able to control his urge, killing was no more a need for him after he met Hannah
So I guess, after moving to Argentina he would have stopped killing
Doesn't that mean he chose his family over killing, because now they're never going to get caught in his web like Rita and Deb did?
@@NotChukkov right

The show was sputtering ever since they killed off Julie Benz's character. I was hoping that they would redeem themselves with a satisfying ending but no. I pretty much just rewatch through S4 and that's when the show ends for me.
S1-4 are canon.
Whole show is lol
Two words: Scott Buck. They handed him the keys in season 6 and the show quickly devolved into unrecognizable soap opera drivel..
Then how do you explain season 5? It was certainly not any better than season 7.
Barf...
@@Xehanort10 tbh that scene is awesome
I just don't see dexter dying by getting killed or him being imprisoned. I'm down with the idea of him losing everything and being banished cause I'm pretty sure that would punish him more.
I wanted it to end with him just killing himself in that storm.
Ever since Hannah showed up the show went south. Never liked her
Facts
Hannah showed up because TPTB didn't have the balls to really tackle Deb's feelings for Dex in more than a superficial way. So they used her to avoid any possible romance relationship or even get their hands really dirty in a narrative that deals with it.
She poisoned completely innocent people for kicks but the show tried to pretend she was a vigilante type like Dexter who killed people worse than herself.
Thank you. I hated her, yet they decided to run with her. I couldn't agree with you more
Yeah. Just a more unrealistic version of lumen
That would have been AWESOME.
Last season would be all the characters speaking with him and all and the ending would be him getting the electric chair like his father showed that one guy getting
Or just make Dexter a wanted serial killer that's just hard to catch. That's all they had to do
Worse ending of all time. Debra killing Lagherta was totally out of character and it was bad for the story. Dexter should have been exposed to everyone as the Bay Harbor butcher in the season 7 finale and season 8 would have been him and Debra on the run.
I like this idea
No it wasn’t it was building up the whole time to debs dark side and how much she cares for her brother
Killing off Deb was very mean-spirited on the part of the writer's. Like, hadn't she suffered enough?! And Dexter just casually abandoning Harrison was ridiculous.
He knows they would get hurt or killed with him around
I was always intrigued as to why we never explored Dexters relationship with his adoptive mother.
He apparently has Schizoid Personality Disorder btw, so that plays into your perspective well
He is a sociopath.
he is a psychopath because he has blood lust. sociopaths dont have bloodlust they just are void of emotions
Jose 84 no he is not. That was already explained in this analysis
I think the show started to fall apart as soon as they introduced Hannah Mckay
Nah. It was when starting in Season 5 the show went from a crime drama about a vigilante serial killer to a bad family and romance drama. Hannah was just a symptom of that second part.
I thought it should have ended with lumen tbh
All the ladies in Dexters life were amazing
exactly
I didn't buy any of his actions with Hannah. It was pure lust with her, not love. Even knowing she killed innocents and then tried to murder Deb, even going as far as to say he could never trust her, somehow she's back in the picture and the one he wants to run away with and start a new life. As if we hadn't seen how in touch with his emotions he got to be with Lumen. He was even able to tell Astor he loved her that season. He said being with Lumen didn't make him feel like a monster cuz she didn't see him as one. But sure, Hannah was "the one"🙄
The ending took zero chances. I can't think of any other way to put it; it had no balls.
I wanted the last season to be Dexter in prison and on trial.
Then write your own head canon.
That’s what an executive producer wanted but he left after the ice truck killer season he wanted everything to be flashbacks and in the series finale Dexters on the death table about to get the needle seeing everyone he’s killed or was responsible for killing
I think they wanted to keep it open for a reboot tbh
Fitting that Season 8's villain was nicknamed The Brain Surgeon because watching it feels like having your head sawed into.
My biggest complaint is how Dexter received a "get out of jail free" card at the end of every season
Yeah I also tuned out after that.
I think they took it too far with Deb falling in love with Dexter. I hated that part of the series.
Nah. Suicide by sailing into the hurricane
Agreed.
Hit the nail right on the head
@Danielle D. Minerva I never said I disagreed with her dying! I said I hate how they wrote Dex’s REACTION, to her death!
glad to see im not the only one who appreciated the emotional development. from the start he says he feels nothing but as the show progresses we are made to question that. so many fans insist he felt nothing the whole 8 seasons. that would make him dull. it seems that they gave him deep relationships only to devolve him into an emotional retard at their whim. he loved rita but is suddenly retarded when she passes. he was affectionate and comforting with rita but he has a hard time comforting deb who hes the closest with? he meets lumen and is properly emotional with her. he meets his son after years apart and hes emotionally retard again. he never had a problem showing affect to his son. the writers evolve and devolve him at their discretion. i recognize writing can be inconsistent at times. i will always see him as a character who has a lot of emotional growth, with moments if bad writing thrown in for laughs or what not.
Who’s here after the announcement of Dexter coming back for 10 more episodes?

Dexter was never the same after Doakes got killed off.

interestingly the take already made a great essay on "anti hero 2.0" that functions like a response to this trend
Because if they're not white, y'all gonna scream 'racism'.
@blurryperson Why would you bring race into this?
This ending actually ruined the show for me. That's never in my life happened to me, asides from this.
Maybe it'll ;-)
