I would have kept the Lumberjack Ending but instead of him going home, sitting down and looking off into the Camera with the unanswered question of What’s Next? It would’ve been better if he walked into a Bar and ordered a Drink.... well Dexter sits there waiting, he notices a Guy down at the end of the bar with a Girl on his Lap... He takes a sip of his drink and looks off at the man once more discreetly, and in his head he say’s - Tonight’s The Night, and it’s going to happen again and again! Dexter looks up at the Camera and smirks as it fades to Black, Has to happen, he says!🔥 Perfect Tribute to episode 1 as being the first words he says, and the last!💥
This is exactly what I have been missing from the finale. For me, personally, how it ended was ALMOST perfect. This was my favourite show and I said to everyone, after what happened to Deb, there was no way that Dex would have felt ok or comfortable having a good and jolly life. It was the final straw for him. He needs to kill to survive and function as well. And while I was semi ok with the looking at the camera end scene, this would have been 100% without a doubt exactly what it needed. Shout out to you! And that’s how I’m always going to imagine it ended in my head from now on 👍🏼
That would be clever, but might not fit with the arc of humanizing him with emotions, like guilt and regret. I got the sense at the end he might have no ability to avoid killing - but his actual conscience had kicked in, beyond the code of Harry. The enjoyment of it would have gone away and it would be miserable - or at least require some narrative to explain how he slipped back into his old ways. I'm glad they didn't do that though. It seems like what they actually did was to leave him in a void of depression, where he accepts being ruined and never being able to connect again.
@@leigh-annelightbowncopan8564 Agreed. And I found it quite telling that he relocated to the Pacific Northwest, where many serial killers hailed from, most notably Ted Bundy. So I assumed he was going to continue killing, but that ending would have been perfect!
I was annoyed too. Everything was so out of order, so it made some other scenes misleading. Im also mad that I wasted my time watching a recap and not a explanation to the ending
I watched the series again recently. I think many miss the fact that maybe he was never a sociopath. He was traumatized and no one ever tried to fix him and he was sent down the wrong path. Each season you see him get better and you realize he could have lived a normal life.
Dexter seasons 1 through 4 were great. Season 5 and 6 were fine. 7 was better and season 8 was just bad. But it doesnt ruin the past seasons as much as thrones did.
The ending was perfect! Dexter's entire issue was that he couldnt feel emotions. Yet at the end, he cared for his sister, his lover and his son. He learned to feel emotions, thus curing himself if his need to kill.
I'm on a rewatch now. While she was an obsessive sociopath, she was one of the few that truly understood Dexter. She told him that he was never a monster, it was his father that convinced him that he was one.
Today I finally finished watching dexter and I couldn't be more satisfied with the show's ending , sure the show had a few flaws and some logical errors. but i feel like people don't understand the true meaning behind the ending (this video sure as hell wasn't any help this was just a recap). So let me get my take on the show. the whole show began with a murdering semi - socio path serial killer, dexter. Who starts out as non consciousness and guilt-less person who cannot relate to anyone he seems like an out sider living in a world full of insiders. He has to fake his feelings to pretend to be 'normal' so he puts on a sort of invisible camouflage mask around people to act normal and blend in with them both emotionally and Physically .but watching his whole journey we start to understand his complex character(a loving father and a brother the *human inside him*)as he slowly evolves and stops faking his emotions and starts having a conscious mind.......and by the end of the show he is ready to break free of his mask but in a few unfortunate set of events leads to him truly understanding what his father was trying to tell him along(leaving you to speculate).
I never seen this show until this past weekend when I binged watched the entire show from beginning to end on Netflix. I was a bit confused by the ending.
Ooh good catch, I missed that but you're totally right, he was 3! Consider yourself lucky, the ending of this video was just as bad as the ending of the show.
If you didn't get the video's point, go again to 10:36... In the end Dex doesn't feel the urge to kill because his will to have a family is louder than its Dark Passenger's voice. What an amazing job they did with this show - even if I am a little disappointed by the ending. Part of what they did so well throughout the series was to break with all the expectations they set. I was surprised by the direction they took it many times. I understand the desire not to give us a happily ever after finale, but I feel like what they chose missed the mark a little bit. I think they resolved his desire to kill, though possibly left him with a "need" to kill that he simply can't avoid... A spin off down the line where Harrison somehow seeks out his father would be very welcome.
Oh my God. Dexter 🥺. I spent so much time with him. And now he's gone 😟. The producers of the show killed him 😡. I will never forgive them. I thought that Dexter would live on forever. What a nightmare. But like Dexter once said to one of his victims "nothing lasts forever".
It is true that woman can feel the lack of emotion in sociopaths when they're intimate, as a sociopath every relationship I have been in the woman always says something about my lack of emotion. In Dexter he shows some sociopath traits but certain others he doesn't.
Might as well have started this with "previously on Dexter" since all you did was talk about the show as opposed to explain the ending which is what the title suggests
Dexter was giving into his desires, which he knew was bad for himself and everyone around him. So he left. It came from him breaking the rules his father set for him, which sent him on the downward spiral. Breaking more rules, and slowly giving in to his desires.
An epic fail for sure. I didnt even bother watching it after seeing the last few episodes leading up to it...i read about the ending, that was bad enough
Doakes should have went into a Coma in season 2 instead of dying... then hes in a coma for next few seasons ... and final scene of season 7 is him waking up... And season 8 goes from there.
Dexter will be force to kill his own son after the kid becomes a serial killer. Or The kid will become a police officer and he will be force to kill his own father.
i cry every time i watch the final scenes with dex and debra.....the final season is choppy...especially between bro and sis...but that ending is so heartbreaking.
Pretty sure they were originally planning on killing or having him imprisoned. Personally I felt it would've made a lot more sense if he just went to jail. Could've ended almost the exact same way with him staring into the camera and would be a lot more satisfying seeing people's reactions to finding out about Dexter. And if they wanted a spin off they could've just made something up, explosion at the prison, someone could break him out (perhaps a fan), etc ,etc.
Netflix should make a Dexter movie like they did with Breaking Bad. Dexter actually needs a good ending. Breaking bad had one of the best endings of TV history and they decided to make a movie we didn’t need. If anything it kinda ruined Breaking Bad for me. I disliked the ending to Dexter and it would be so awesome if they made a film of him fleeing from Miami Metro or something
That was such a great show. I never wanted it to end. I have been very critical of season 8 in the past and, even though I still believe they could have done a better job at the ending, I have to admit that part of my criticism is unfair due to my attachment to the show.
One thing I noticed in season 6 episode 2 at 39 min. as the garage door is closed, the camera doesn't move the actors don't move and the lights don't move, and you can see what looks like an Angel`s shadow moves down the garage door, really kind of creepy.
A drastic difference from the books, I love Darkly Dreaming Dexter (following books are a bit iffy, but still fun), but there is not conflict, he is a cold blooded serial killer who doesn't want to be caught and the code is part of his routine
As dexter was getting ready to leave town, he showed his boat to a guy who was boat shopping. Dexter told the guy some things about the boat and pointed to the rear storage area and told the guy that he had an inflatable raft on board. That’s how he survived the hurricane and got back to land.
My absolute favorite show. Six months before the show was announced, I was watching CSI and had a good convo with my brother about a serial killer CSI and how they could get away with it. When Dexter aired, my scenario came true and watched the show religiously.
i understand that dexter feels like he is just gonna hurt more people because he couldn’t save debra but he shouldn’t have left harrison and ritas kids alone
I saw someone post on Reddit I think about making a spin-off of dexter where Hannah teaches Harrison the code and Harrison goes back to Miami and starts to recreate the bay harbor butcher killings to learn more about his father and while that's going on dexter hears about the killings and it makes him come out of retirement which in the end he learns that it is Harrison. I probably explained that terribly but I hope you get the point.
I feel like his self awareness isn't unrealistic at all. He had an EXTREMELY decorated and championed detective for an adoptive father and mentor in the ways of the serial killer.
Killing child predators, murderers, animal abusers, rapists, can't be the worst thing. What's really awful is how systems let some of these monsters walk free to cause harm and damage to more. If they could be caged and kept away from the general public perhaps studied then people wouldn't root for hero's like this.
The ending was great because dexter was finally paying for his crimes because deb died. In the beginning of the series he says, “if there was one person i could love it would be deb” and in season three Debra says, “if I ever get like that, just kill me” and he does
1) Dexter living an exiled life away from.ppl means he has stopped killing he wont find bad ppl in such a place anyway and he has no access to resources (his urge to be with his family overcame his urge to kill and he leaves saxton behind for police/debra when debra is killed by saxton he is out for revenge killing as its personal now and he is emotional it wasn't his urge to kill to stay alive..now that he lives alone his urge to reunite with his family is keeping him going and he has no urge to kill at some point he would/might make contact or let them know he is ok but he chose to stay away because he cant let his past come back to haunt anyone that's left whom he loves because he cant bear the pain of losing someone not anymore he had humanized (it started from Rita's death) and he feels the pain of the ppl he has lost over the years his father, rita, debra because of his activities...he has faked his death living so any mistakes of his past die out in time as being with harrison and hannah will put a target back at them if anyone is looking for him. If he wanted to kill he could have gone to another country and started over there not in a lumberjack yard/forest. 2) I don't think his son will turn out to be like him...dexter was aware enough to see his mom death (he could speak by that time saw her getting butchered) left 3 days in there because of the trauma his memory was blocked but it had a deep affect on his subconscious mind...harisson was much smaller hadn't developed speaking skills he wasn't left in 3 days and had no memory of it.. he is normal kid showing feelings nd emotions (enjoying with his siblings and even considering hannah as mom and liking her (something that dexter lacked expressing about his family untill he humanized along the years) Also his drawing included him being with a happy family hannah, dex and himself unlike dexter who drew images that dr vogue showed him (harrison clearly drew Hannah in the pic and dexter thought he was about to say hannah when the marshall came in put he said mom 😂) 3)Hannah might be killer but she isn't like dexter unlike dexter she doesn't enjoy it nd kills when it's necessary if someone tries to kill/wrong her or tries to damage her life (except her 1st kill which she did under randall influence to please him and mercy kill for the old lady to put her out of her misery like dexter did)...she killed sal price only to protect her and dexter and attempted to kill Debra for the same reason although when she realized that dexter cared for debra she apologizes later on and debra leaves her alone since she did same thing for dexter to save him from lagureta...she wasn't a ruthless killer, her kills usually including poison except her last kill 2nd husband in which she is horrified by what she has done.
They should make a movie on how it all happened. Like what happened to Hannah and Harrison after, how Dexter managed to get to Oregon’s and become a lumberjack, and how everyone reacts to him disappearing
I understood it entirely. Everyone he cared about was either tainted, killed or both due to his nature and his inability to curb it. He chose to isolate himself. I don't think the show could have ended any other way realistically if you wanted Dexter to live and be free without risk to his son and his lover. As far as putting Deb's remains in the ocean I believe it was both symbolic and his means of escape. She was his victim, although not by his hands, he still felt responsible. She did commit murder after all.

finaljoses Why call it “we now understand the ending of Dexter” if you don’t say anything we didn’t already know
Still my favorite series... I was so sad when it ended...
If they ever come out with any spin offs I will defintely watch them.
Oh dear.
Looper again with the click bate!
Dexter was giving into his desires, which he knew was bad for himself and everyone around him. So he left. It came from him breaking the rules his father set for him, which sent him on the downward spiral. Breaking more rules, and slowly giving in to his desires.
Literally the worst ending of a great show ever
Debatable. We all have another show in mind.
An epic fail for sure. I didnt even bother watching it after seeing the last few episodes leading up to it...i read about the ending, that was bad enough
The New Blood Dexter's ending was even more dreadful.
I still can’t get over debs death
as far as i'm concerned, Dexter's run ended at the finale of season 4
Didn't really explain the ending much, but it does make me want to find the time to watch Dexter again.
I want dexter to come back, written by Vince Gilligan lol
Doakes should have went into a Coma in season 2 instead of dying... then hes in a coma for next few seasons ... and final scene of season 7 is him waking up... And season 8 goes from there.
Dexter will be force to kill his own son after the kid becomes a serial killer.
Or
The kid will become a police officer and he will be force to kill his own father.
I like the second one better. Start writing!
In the books the kid becomes a serial killer. Both kids do.
His mother was killed when he was three. His name is Arthur Mitchell, not Arthur Miller.
I watched the show, thanks for the recap. Now explain the ending of Dexter so that I can finally understand smh
My top 5 tv shows
1.Dexter
2.Breaking Bad
3.Sherlock
4.Prison break
5.Ozark
Ozark is very good.
I low key want dexter to show up in the series finale of "you" just to kill joe....idk why but I just have a dexter feeling throughout the show
So glad someone else said it
i cry every time i watch the final scenes with dex and debra.....the final season is choppy...especially between bro and sis...but that ending is so heartbreaking.
I thought there was originally supposed to be a ninth season.
Dexter was actually 3 years old when he witnessed his mother's mutilation, not 2.
*Games of Throw the Series Away*
Am I Right? Jeeez
A well deserved dislike for the misleading title.
That was such a great show. I never wanted it to end. I have been very critical of season 8 in the past and, even though I still believe they could have done a better job at the ending, I have to admit that part of my criticism is unfair due to my attachment to the show.
I hated Hanna. I wish he would have stayed with Luman
One thing I noticed in season 6 episode 2 at 39 min. as the garage door is closed, the camera doesn't move the actors don't move and the lights don't move, and you can see what looks like an Angel`s shadow moves down the garage door, really kind of creepy.
I didn’t like the ending. I need a movie.
A drastic difference from the books, I love Darkly Dreaming Dexter (following books are a bit iffy, but still fun), but there is not conflict, he is a cold blooded serial killer who doesn't want to be caught and the code is part of his routine
Ending of Dexter, probably worst tv shoe ending of all time
Agreed, such a disservice to the long time show.
Can anyone name a tv show that had a good ending? I can’t think of one
@@AggressiveBeagle The re-boot of Battlestar Galactica
@@AggressiveBeagle Breaking Bad, Banshee, Spartacus...there's 3
Guess I’m just too picky...
As dexter was getting ready to leave town, he showed his boat to a guy who was boat shopping. Dexter told the guy some things about the boat and pointed to the rear storage area and told the guy that he had an inflatable raft on board. That’s how he survived the hurricane and got back to land.
Tonight's the Night 😁
Debra's "rise" from rookie to detective, then lieutenant was ridiculous.
"Dislike" for being lied to.
Arguably the greatest TV show of all time! I really do wish that they will go ahead and make a movie.
My absolute favorite show.
Six months before the show was announced, I was watching CSI and had a good convo with my brother about a serial killer CSI and how they could get away with it. When Dexter aired, my scenario came true and watched the show religiously.
Not hard to understand. Just not a popular decision. Most wanted Dexter to pay for his crimes
i understand that dexter feels like he is just gonna hurt more people because he couldn’t save debra but he shouldn’t have left harrison and ritas kids alone
I suffered through this as I suffered through the damn show. With no feelings other than anger and despair.
it's the internal monologue that made people connect with the show, You on Netflix also has the same theme and it's working!
2) I don't think his son will turn out to be like him...dexter was aware enough to see his mom death (he could speak by that time saw her getting butchered) left 3 days in there because of the trauma his memory was blocked but it had a deep affect on his subconscious mind...harisson was much smaller hadn't developed speaking skills he wasn't left in 3 days and had no memory of it.. he is normal kid showing feelings nd emotions (enjoying with his siblings and even considering hannah as mom and liking her (something that dexter lacked expressing about his family untill he humanized along the years)
Also his drawing included him being with a happy family hannah, dex and himself unlike dexter who drew images that dr vogue showed him (harrison clearly drew Hannah in the pic and dexter thought he was about to say hannah when the marshall came in put he said mom 😂)
3)Hannah might be killer but she isn't like dexter unlike dexter she doesn't enjoy it nd kills when it's necessary if someone tries to kill/wrong her or tries to damage her life (except her 1st kill which she did under randall influence to please him and mercy kill for the old lady to put her out of her misery like dexter did)...she killed sal price only to protect her and dexter and attempted to kill Debra for the same reason although when she realized that dexter cared for debra she apologizes later on and debra leaves her alone since she did same thing for dexter to save him from lagureta...she wasn't a ruthless killer, her kills usually including poison except her last kill 2nd husband in which she is horrified by what she has done.
They should make a movie on how it all happened. Like what happened to Hannah and Harrison after, how Dexter managed to get to Oregon’s and become a lumberjack, and how everyone reacts to him disappearing
Great recap of all the seasons within the series🙌🏾👍🏾😎
I understood it entirely. Everyone he cared about was either tainted, killed or both due to his nature and his inability to curb it. He chose to isolate himself. I don't think the show could have ended any other way realistically if you wanted Dexter to live and be free without risk to his son and his lover. As far as putting Deb's remains in the ocean I believe it was both symbolic and his means of escape. She was his victim, although not by his hands, he still felt responsible. She did commit murder after all.
