  • WARNING: This video may cause seizures.
    Many times, I hear people say that graphics don't matter and that only gameplay counts towards making a game great. I disagree with this.
    There are some games out there with such graphical problems, it can seriously spoil the experience. Today, I'm taking a look at the games that will test the faith of even the most devout "gameplay whores". Wow, never thought I'd say that. Except for the other six previous times, of course.
    Find out why you shouldn't trust the ground or the sky, how even the prettiest of movies can become the ugliest games or why shining a light into someone's eyes is a bad idea that some missed the memo for.

      Many older games are console versions of arcade games, which are designed to constantly flash big lights to draw attention. Also in the flight game that's one of the only ways to convey movement with that level of graphics.

    The Ristar Lava thing might be if you used to play the game on an old CRT/TV; it might have looked more subtle by the quality in the same way those weird water stripes in Sonic 1 look like that since the CRT quality would blend the pixels...making those look like a transparent waterfall instead.
    Though it wouldn't be surprising if even with an CRT or CRT filter that amount of flashing still looks terrible
    Also, so many old arcade light gun games suffer from flashing white at the screen every time you shoot :(

    • @jettvalen7326
      @jettvalen7326 Год назад +18

      I think when it comes to the old Light Gun games it wasn't a matter of just style as much as functionality.
      The flash was actually an ingenious way of simplifying the details on screen so the light gun could instantly detect the details of the shot as quickly as possible. Like a camera or the Wiimote if you were actually holding the infrared sensor instead of the controller.

    • @TsukiZer0
      @TsukiZer0 Год назад +12

      Same thing might apply to the clouds in Outrun and others...
      Edit: Also worth noting a lot of GB, GBC and GBA games used flickering for effects purpose because of the screen's natural Ghosting or Motion Blur. Trip World made sprites flicker when underwater to give the impression of the water overlaying them, Batman Return of the Joker used this on Stage 1 to make the water translucent and wave back and forth, Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge had the distant mountains in Sky Castle flickering to look like they were farther than they seem...
      And in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow the flickering complements some effects, such as making the Giant Ghost soul look like it's properly overlaying Soma.
      As for arcade rail shooters, flashing white was part of a mechanic to check whether the player scored a shot or not. IDR the specifics, but think of the NES Zapper

    I think Dishonoured 2's big problem is that it's always overexposed. There's no balance to the contrasting. Things lit with candles or gas lights are almost white while being surrounded in near absolute darkness, and things lit with electric lights or daylight are so washed out it becomes difficult to judge depth.

      Its the shadow contrast. The shadows are way too dark in the bright enviroments. In most games, like in reality shadows are much less dark in the brighter places. The complexity of the scenes increases amount of different shadows that definitely should not be as dark as they are. The contrast makes your brain go haywire as it tries to make sense of the scene and it can't, so you get the feeling of being visually overwhelmed.

    Rayman Legends was a disappointing game to me not necessarily, because of the quantity (although that had it's factors), but more so variety. I love the game and all, but I can't help but feel things get a bit bland after awhile. The gameplay is so simple that I doubt they could've stretched it out any longer even if they tried!
    It's got a shiny new coat and even more refined flow; however, it matters very little when levels, themes and characters all blend together.

    I adamantly defend the visual effects of the Rayman Legends 8-bit music stages. They make the already-fun stages even more fun and I wish you could play the original songs with them. I _like_ that they force you to rely on learning the song and playing to the beat instead of the visuals. *That's the entire point of rhythm games!* I also personally don't find any of them to be eyesores at all. I think they all look cool. I love how they make the stages look like music videos and I object to the notion that they look "overly-edited." I _love_ how the final stage used all of them and quickly switched them up like that. It was just so damn _satisfying_ to beat the stage by forgoing what I see and focusing on the song and, again, I genuinely love how it looked.
    Anyway, I thank you for putting the entirety of the stage in the video. It was a very nice trip down memory lane.

    I think the reason that Dishonored 2 and some other other games, that people mentioned in the comments are painfull not only beause of contrast and blur, but also because they are... very yellow, so to speak. Everyone knows that bright red is painfull to the eyes. But bright yellow is close in spectrum, about just as painfull to look at. I would think, this must be the main reason. Now that I think about it, I hated Test Drive Unlimited 2 compare to first one. Just from setting you can say, that first game (being set in Hawaii) has a lot of green. But second game (Ibiza island), is indeed very yellow. TDU2 also has Oahu from first game, but by then my whole mood was ruined.

    A little bit unrelated, but I was born on April 3rd 1999 and had a brother who was about three years older than me, so our Window XP computer had an assortment of games ported from consoles from the mid to late 90s. I don't even know their fucking names, so I could never even hope to find them.

God, it's so surreal, suddenly remembering so many details about a game that you forgot you knew even existed. This doesnt have anything to do with the video really but thank you for reminding me about a game that was so important to me when i was younger. i still AM young, but nostaglia can still exist.

    Flashing objects is still really cool..tho most of the time the flashing ( for water, lava, sprites.etc.) is meant to be an easy way for developers to get around console limitations and to create a transparency effect , it looks really good on a crt screen but on an emulator being played on a flat screen? Yeah it's seizure inducing

    As for Dishonored 2, I think everybody has quirks. Mine? I can't play LoZ:Wind Waker without getting migraines after 30-45min. I used to think it was because of cell shading, but... I was able to play Borderlands 2 and not have that problem at all.

    ayy, I have that Toy Story game, I actually replayed it fairly recently one day I was bored.
    The music plays in my Game Boy Color, but the game was being kind to you by not working, it's basically 2 songs that get annoying fast + You got a friend in me, which plays on the story text dumps and sounds decent enough for GB standards.
    The gameplay of that game feels so bad, the jumps are soooo slow, at least the game is short due to all the cut stages lmao.

    I rented Pandemonium 2 out back in the day and stopped playing after about 30 mins because of how weird it was. It was a huge letdown from the original. Why they wanted to target the "haha weed is funny, 420 blaze it!" crowd back then with Pandemonium 2 I'll never know.

    Why do people keep saying the Genesis had awesome music and sound effects? Every time I see a video with Genesis games, they sound _terrible_ compared to SNES games, except for the very very cheap games made by those companies that just put out tons of shovelware (that were usually ported from other systems to begin with).

    • @Turbulation1
      @Turbulation1 Год назад

      Because you have very abnormal and confusing taste compared to most other people.
      This may be a surprise to you, but genesis music can actually sound great when someone knows how to use the soundchip, and you had Ristar in this video as a shining example on how good Genesis music can be. But apparently according to you with your generalization, all Genesis music is bad which includes Ristar.
      Wonder how that could happen? Could it be you despise FM Synthesis sound so much that it can never sound good under any circumstances? Even the best use of it on the console?
      The amount of slander towards the Genesis soundchip is pretty undeserved, and it shouldn’t really be compared to the SNES sound chip, because they are both very different beasts when it comes to sound, and both can sound great on their own accords. It can be used just as terribly as the SNES too, mostly because it’s harder to use, but that doesn’t make it in any way worse than SNES music overall.
      It would be easier to put differences aside and actually enjoy both types of music, instead of using a black and white mentality against them.

      @@Turbulation1 Tell you what, link me some of the best pieces in your opinion on the Genesis. It takes more than just one song, so I won't judge it based upon that one piece in this video, but the reason why I have such poor opinion of the Genesis sound system is because every time I see gameplay videos of Genesis games, the sound just.... doesn't sound that good. And yes, I fully agree, there are plenty of SNES games made by no-name or "cheap" dev companies that have terrible sound. So maybe that is the problem? I didn't own a Genesis until well after its lifespan when I picked one up for like $50 at an Elbo once and only played a little of it so my experiences are... limited.
      Also, a lot of my experiences with the Genesis sound system is seeing people reviewing games that were released on both Genesis and SNES, and seeing the SNES version beat the Genesis hands-down in the sound department, like... not even close. But again, maybe the people who made the port don't know how to actually use Genesis hardware? /shrug. Need more examples of what people find "good".
      And not liking chiptune? I love chiptune. dude, some of my favorite soundtracks are from the SNES.

    Rare's games give me the impression that the place was run by well-meaning-but-spiteful bastards. Apparently it's a British thing to double down on torturous things in media as a form of sadistic humor. "You don't like it, prat? Well, have some more!" I mean there's no way they didn't know some were deliberately skipping Squawks in DKC1 because of the turning light effect. That Glimmer in DKC2 is mandatory can't possibly be coincidence. Unless they really did assume people just missed Squawks's box in the low light. But they also tended to put deliberately shitty forced camera angles in parts of their 3D games as part of the challenge, and they made Battletoads, so…
    And maybe the Dishonored II thing is the real reason you like fog: it relaxes the eyes. Maybe the issue is that the game's depending too much on sheer resolution to blur out distant objects, or maybe the visuals are hyper contrast-y all over with hardly any gradienting.
