- Sorry for the poor video quality. It was 1999. Video was ripped from a VHS recording :/
Stephan Papadakis was the 1st to break into the 9 seconds quarter mile with a front wheel drive car.
Vehicle is a tube chassis 1997 Honda EK with a Honda H22 cylinder turbocharged engine.
Chassis built by: Shaun Carlson
Engine built by: Stephan Papadakis
This video. These outfits. The haircuts. EVERYTHING. It's a time capsule. It should be preserved for all humanity.
Now days you can get into the 9's with a stock chassis and body and drive it home afterwards. BoostedBoiz drove there 9 sec EK all the way to Florida from Colorado and back after running there first 9. How times and technology have changed, but still always great to see the grassroots stuff and where it all started!
On an eBay turbo nonetheless
there are VWs with 1.9 diesels running 9s now on the standard body and chassis, wow
@@4wdsome444 thats great
God loves you
I pray you find God, satan doesn’t love you and he will lead you to hell
I don’t understand how anybody could thumbs down this? This literally paved the way for imports everywhere
I was there....20years ago, damm times fly 😄👍
Me too beaking records at LACR!!
Wished I was there for this historical event. Damn college midterms.
i was there too..i got some footage aswell...gptta love thsoe hotel partys..
God loves you
How are u doing now
Damn 1999 is vintage... thanks for making me feel old
I was there and watching this brings back so many memories from way back. I had my civic with my GSR swap and we loved street racing back then... wether it was etiwanda, silmar, Kearny Mesa (SD) or L&70th in Palmdale/Lancaster... we would go all over for action... even up to Reno. They had a really nice little race community up there. Seeing a Honda go 9’s back then was unheard of and thought not possible lol... now we see 7’s and onwards ha it’s awesome. Sean and Steph are good doods... dr. Charles and the guys from Pit Crew / JG back then were our heroes
Hell ya. I used to go to Etiwanda too. Really miss those days.
Ya man....we had the same in c.t. miss those days you could find a race for any Honda on the street. back then a 14 sec civic would beat a 11-12 sec rwd all day on the street.
Did you a know a black dude , Quentin or Q. From El Cahon SD. Was young in 2000 , 16 , but he had a 540hp B18 Turbo red Ef civic . Ex gang banger. Incredible dude.
The whole Wicked Racing was beast in the 90's
@@realMaverickBuckley are you sure he was an ex gang member ? I think I know who you are talking about. He worked at Pan Autospory in National City when the owner HA was alive. His hatch was also a aqua colored paint job.
Dude i'm reading that article about you on Jalopnik, it brought me here.. What a life you live!
Carlson! Wow lol Stephen without the shaved head! Seriously though in 99 that 4cyl fwd breaking into the 9's was crazy!
Kinda crazy how he used as many oem parts as possible and still could do this
Ha, I remember this. I was there. It's awesome that the comments seem to be full of us fools who were.
I remember a feeling of validation for the import drag racing scene. As if the masses of so cal kids who were racing Honda's back then willed that car into the 9s so we could all finally hopefully be accepted by the drag racing scene as a whole.
That was awesome to see again. Thanks for the upload.
I remember reading about this in turbo and tech magazine. Great video. You are a legend!💪
Was such a good stream with yourself, Bisimoto, Rywire, and Nads/Hoonigan. We really need another one!
which stream was this?
@@turbotoaster1984 www.twitch.tv/videos/347823102
Panda Vengeance I remember calling Bisimoto from the Virginia Tech Formula SAE shop. He had just had a built Accord in Grassroots Motorsports. 1997 or 1998, that school year, the 4th car I built, 2nd year as engine team leader. He had great advice, but what I remember most of the conversation was his fear of emissions, that he would get shut down by good old CA. The Accord was gold if memory serves.
Anyone else remember this car? Bi never saw it in the flesh...wrong coast.😃
When you owe Dominic Toretto a 10 second car, but you always give 110%.
Thanks for posting this, I still remember watching it from the stands with everyone high-fiving each other. Epic day!
I was in the stands with everyone else for this. RIP Shaun RIP LACR
Throwback, damn now im feeling old af. Was a sad day when LACR was shutdown for good. Great memories there.
Man, the great days of racing. My small-ish town here in Hawaii turned into a HUGE racing scene here in the late 90s, early 2000s. Im sure it was like that in California as well. Everyone was out at night. No smart phones, no social media, no internet/instant access to a wealth of information, like it is now. We'd work all day, then hang out at different spots and race until 4-5am. Back when a 13 sec quarter mile was unbelievably fast for a Honda. I ran 15s in a 4 door civic ef with a b18 swap that we somehow patched together and shoehorned in. There was no RUclips, no forums, no instand access to info. We'd have to buy books, call friends or call import shops on the west coast to help us out. Shit, we didnt even have an engine hoist, so we used 4-5 ratchet straps wrapped around the wood rafter beams in the garage ceiling to lift up engines, or even the front of the engineless car since we were using a combination of OEM jacks lol.
It was like this in california as well. I went to my first street race when i was 14 years old in 2001. I miss seeing teams. That is something newer car guys wont experience. The rivalries and beef. When the fast and the furious first came out, two teams beefed in the movie theater and raced afterwards lol. And how do you get mad street credit? Call out the fastest car of the team or the town.
I have a photo album full of pics from car shows from 97-2001. NOPI Nationals in Atlanta in 97, Hot Import Nights Chicago 1999 or 2000, Battle of the Import car shows. It's funny looking through that sometimes. I'm Starting to feel old. Lol
Those were great days. Man I miss Palmdale. 😥 Bring it back it Steph
Stephen and Ed Bergenholtz were my idles back in the 90's and early 00's. It was because of Ed that I started modding my 90 CRX. Miss that car.
1997-1999 street racing in San Diego at the Fire House, and Kearny to 2000-2003 in Otay 905 fwy area in my D16Z6 EJ2 , I thought I was fast with it all gutted out and CAI, DC Header and CATless straight pipe to the back. I'm 44 now but I'm still down for a street race. Just getting back into Honda's.
Welcome back old friend
Wow i remember the good ole days @LACR amd i remember this day as well! Steph and Shaun are Legends in Import/Sport Compact Racing.
This video is gold and deserve a lot more than 54k visualizations! It looks like the world has changed so much since then. I would be happy to be old now so to have been young during this great times that we just surpassed but yet they look already so far.
Man I feel old but still young at heart
Thank you for this flashback!!
Shaun is wearing them Reebok kamikazes. Lol. I’ll never forget them.
I knew Shaun from the Minitruckin days. He actually shot the feature for my old Nissan. It was so awesome to see where he was going in the automotive world. Still weird to think he passed away so young. Thanks for sharing this.
Papadakis had a Killer mustache
I was 19 years old working at DC Sports when this occurred
😲For the 2000 year in Puerto Rico🇵🇷 they mounted a Chrysler Marino engine (ALL MOTOR)in
🚗💨 STALON RWD * (Dodge) “TITO VICENTE” 🙄 and it ran 8.96 Sec. ¼ Miles. 🤗
These were the good old days!!!
I remember this like it was yesterday, I miss this car!!
I remember hearing about this too in Colorado at bandamere this car running 9s. I was about 14 years old this was legendary lol
that is impressive, these guys been racing since nobody knew what racing is
I miss the old school street racing days .
A pioneer of import drag racing. 👍👍
I remember these days and the days before tube chassis and wheelie-bars on fwd... very gangster back then 😆
now thats a throwback!
Awsome this car was featured in a episode of build biology on the hoonigan youtube channel it was a full break down and walk around of the whole car it still has the h22 turbo Power Plant the engineering and design on this car is amazing for its time when it was built it was really cool to see and crazy the power it made and times it ran u gotta think back then that car was only 2 years old and there wasent alot of options for a ecu and tuning software and parts had to be designed and fabricated like the turbo manifold and alot of other things on that car because u couldnt just buy aftermarket parts of the shelf for a setup like that back in 1999 ita crazy to think that car is still around and together because its a piece of history forsure
no shit normie, if you found out about this car from hoonigan then you are an idiot
We miss ya Shaun!
Pride of the AV import racers.
Shaun Carlson rip
Yup another pioneer of the sport
BOI stop watching these papadakis pulls and finish your swap
Mason Clark lmao I am working on it dude! I used to follow import drag racing way back!
@@KARR hell yeah man, stephen is the man!
I remember that car. A classic.hope you still have it for the car hall of fame
Damn , I wish I could see my dads old evo 7 do the 9.6 second quarter mile it did in 2003 ,
Man, i remember this back in the day, i think i still have ethier a import racer or a turbo magazine that have the car. Can't believe how long technology have come. 9s back in those days was big, now it seems that every honda runs 9 with hardy anything lol
Friday nights were cool racing at that track
i remember when cyber, wicked...a bunch of people were chasing the 9s. 90's Nostalgia
You were always the man to beat, especially in your black hatchback..
I miss my hair from 1999 too.
my 23 years of living
Damn dude it’s crazy that all motor Honda’s can do 8’s now.
Time flies, to think that we now have Honda's that are street cars running 9's like it's nothing is crazy
RICARDO street car= completely different thing
Stop they trailer it and I'ma Honda guy no street Honda's I see anywhere doing 9s... 11-14s yes.
RICARDO boostedboiz drove their Honda to Florida from Colorado, ran 9s and drove it home. The kid could daily it if he wanted too and did for a while.
old school!I remember this car from superstreet
Now, the record is 7,388 Volkswagen Gol BiTurbo stock chasis
All motor 1993 Integra GSR got 16.79 at Palmdale. (HKS air intake, 5 Zigen universal muffler, and Suspension Techniques springs with original Honda struts, No aftermarket clutch and 14 inch GSR wheels) Should be 15.79 in Roscoe and De Soto San Fernando Valley. Wanted to race R.J. De Vera(fast and furious part 1) Roscoe and De Soto
that was me with the hat 4:42 lol
That dude with the white cap?
What I'd give for that car today. Id bring it back with the same setup he had in 99. I know he still has it, but it doesn't run, it's more of a show piece.
This car was so fucking cool
This is part of racing that pissed off all the b18 owners
Nate R actually if you did a bit of research he was the first in the 9s with a tube car Ron and Ed bergonholtz did it with a B18 turbo unibody crx
Who drove it, you Steve?
Where is this?
I was Virginia Tech hall mates and roommates with Mark Brauning.
Friends for 23 years. The first car I remember he and G really building was the red roller skate H 22 all motor car. On a dolly behind their K5. She ran a 12.54, I remember in 1996 or 1997. To my knowledge Mark was the first east coaster to put a GSR into a Civic and get it working. His friends were driving to CA to have it done. Check out the 6 page spread in a 1967ish Hot Rod magazine G got. All built by G 23 T bucket with a Hemi.
The most beautiful exhaust I've ever seen and we had Hi Tec exhaust on our Formula Continentals I wrenched at Hot Shoe Racing in 1999.
8 individual exhaust pipes parallel from the ports to the rear bumper. All in a horizontal row terminating at the rear bumper.
RIP Gernot. (He passed a few months ago.)
RIP Mark. Luckily we went to a concert together in DC on 12/20/17 to see Samantha Fish who I turned him onto. Mark died NYE 2017 probably of sleep apnea.
Both gone but never forgotten.
Small world. G taught Louie Herman how to wrench Porsches. I bought most all of my 1973 914 2.0 parts from his shop in college, Dulles International Motorsport. Of course, I didn't learn of the connection until after I had finished rustoring it. Mark would ALWAYS break my balls about my Porsche. "Piece of shit rusted out 914..." Him and his coffee can exhaust tips. 🙄 I let him drive to an emmet swimming concert as we WERE the 2 biggest fans on campus. After the clover leaf, he turned to me, "NOW I know why you like this car!
Then Gernot built a reverse rotation 2.54 L H22 to match the sequential gearbox.
1st FWD car to ever have a wheelie bar. I picked the car up by it easily.
1st center cockpit all motor car cause he and his brothers and G figured, why not? It won the NOPI/NIRA championship.
It was outlawed. Why didn't the competition step up to the plate? Cause they didn't want to work as hard. This car was built in his parents 2 car garage, WAY before Brauning Motorsports bought the old 16k? sq ft body shop across the street from the a Colonial Beach 8th mile.
Ah the memories. They're teaching God how to build beautiful cars hat straight haul ass.
I always wondered why his black CRX got 5mpg🤔😜. Something to do with a turbocharged intercooled GSR motor with Weiscos so the ring lands don't break perhaps?
I helped him get out of a reckless ticket in his 1993 RX7 too. I was the passenger. We did "in excess of 90mph" as the ticket read. No fucking shit! The cop ALMOST rear ended us Mark hit the oh shit pedal so hard! "Son, I've had my fast cars and paid my price. You've got a twin turbo rotary, I have a pushrod V8. The only reason I'm giving you reckless is that it's rush hour." I've never seen Mark so scared in my life. We were apparently too happy to have JUST signed a lease at Foxridge knowing we were moving out of the penthouse of Lee Hall. (Mark was one year behind me in school and one day older.)
Think this car was the first fwd drag car to hit 9sec runs, which was rare for a fwd IL 4 turbo cars too run 9sec 1/4 miles in 99, it would be like running a 7second 1/4 mile in 2020 but with less than a 1000hp that is crazy fast , know theres a few crazy hondas running 7s but they probably have way over 1000hp+ . eventually it got into high 8s fully built h22a turbo 800hp+,
Man I miss Shawn!
Oh snap I think I saw this car at the Peterson!
Damn I feel old now LOL
God loves you
i don't wanna know what are the aftermarket/built parts that this thing have, i wanna know what does it have OEM
Damn I miss LACR.
NIRA Intense Import Drag Racing on PC !
I was 10 wish I was there ☹️!
I don't think any of the people in the comments that said they were there were actually there...
I was in 1999 no BS.
A young papadakis hey lol
Is that LACR?
What was the turbo setup like on this? O_o genuinely curious as to what 1999 turbo tech was like
probably nothing that crazy it only made like 600ish hp
Is that the Papadakis with the hair?
if i remember right mid to low 8s on a mostly stock head.
This video reads 20 minutes but it’s only 4 minutes
Was this the exact car that eventually became the "aem civic", or was that a different car?
Same car
Rip lacr
Whos here just to see stephan with hair?
Where are you from ? Somewhere in Greece ?
Damn nice hair bro. 👌
any idea what it weighed, looks like it was very light
First 9 second fastest ek9 in the world (EK9)=(9 second)=(1999) (999) that's a 9 number
LACR is now a huge hole in the grown smh
ah yes, the days of filming with a potato
Men are great.
Must be a reupload
Show the legandary h22
This car still around? In storage?
Yes if u go on hoonigans youtube channel nd go back alittle bit there was a build biology episode of this car and they did a break down of the build and full walk around showing alot of the car and how it is setup if im correct i think the car is still exactly the same engine and all as it was in this video deffently worth watching this cars a piece of history forsure
Here's the link to the video im talkin about

i remember this, we used to run with PYR
Steph, you had so much hair...
🇵🇹
he had hair
So you weren’t always bald?
On an EBay turbo nonetheless !
Where have you read that? This car was sponsored by Greddy and I think had one of their turbos on it from the beginning.
It had a Mitsubishi 25g turbo in it. Greddy was really popular back then and their turbo kits used Mitsubishi turbos. China was making toys with full of lead back in 1999
Was eBay even active back then? Lol
First ever?
WICKED RACING
Today every usa carguy got a 30cm beard 🤦🏽♂️
Nah. He was the fist filmed. We did it way before, but then again I'm just a drag racer not a media queen.....
Sure you did
Some old 40 year old is crying and feeling old right now.
Japan first 9sec car in 1999 with old school tuner.....but america with modern tuner in 2021 10sec car dominic torreto🤔
I would throw a k series in that classic & see what it does today!!
