  • Porsche in the Cold and Snow? I put the Pirelli P-Zero summer tires through their paces in frigid cold and also in the wet just above freezing. How do they do? How much were winter tires? Summer tires? How about All-Seasons in Sports Car sizes? Take a listen and watch the footage of summer tires on a 2014 Porsche Boxster S as I put test them out.

Think of it this way: below 45°F, the rubber compound increasingly becomes the consistency of hard plastic. That’s the visualization I heard described in a forum. Admittedly, a bit hyperbolic, but it’s a memorable description of the decreased performance characteristics. You hit the nail on the head when mentioning the real problem is when you try to stop and turn at the same time. What led me to this video today is, it’s the middle of winter, and I have the itch to go out for a drive to cheer myself up on a gloomy, gray day. But looks like I’ll have to wait until it warms back up.

Don't tell the hard core Porsche fans but I love it because it reminds me of the tan interior of Magnum PI's Ferrari 308!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with this video, super helpful! I live in NYC and just got a 500 Abarth with P Zero Nero summer tires and I was wondering if I needed to swap these out in winter - you answered it for me!

Thanks for another great vid! Love the car. Ok, so I have a 987, came with crap continentals...read some great reviews on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S....WWWWOOOOOWWWW! Instant super grip, however, summer tire. Not so bueno in the cold - great in the wet though. The compound is definitely made for getting hot and sticky in temps above about 70F. They're OK until about 40F and then anything below that, you might as well be riding on concrete blocks. It's not a daily driver so I haven't had it out in snow, but if I had to, I'd probably spend slightly more money than you did on the Atlas'. Tires are everything on a performance car - and I really wasn't that big of a believer in this until the first few minutes into the new Michelin PS4S...worth every penny ($250 ea for fronts/$300 ea for rear).

Love the input on the PS 4S tires. I was concerned that warm winter days would lead to me shredding the winter tires. I'm not sure how valid a concern that is. You're right - tires are everything... excited to see the PS 4S tires sometime soon!

I have summer tires all year, I dont take the 981 out in the winter when the temp is below 40 F (which I believe is the recommended lowest temp for summer tires) and even then I am much more careful. I also tend to avoid taking it out when its wet, mostly because I live in a rural area in the uk and lots of tractors leave loads of mud on the roads. Nothing worse than having spent so much time cleaning it for it to get caked. I did make a mistake on my first change of rear tires - it had 4 x P Zeros N0 - I used a website with my car details and it recommended a set - which I had fitted all correct sizings just not N rated- having those on the back with N rated tires on the front made the car really jittery/scary hitting about 100 kph. Changed to some P Zero N1s - and it was back to usual reassuring grip. I think it depends really the ratio of decent weather you have - and whether you have a second car for the bad days. Last summer tho, had a big service and the porsche specialist took me out in my car on his test track - even then did some hot laps to make the tires sticky - and then the speed he took it round corners made it feel like it was pulling my face off - the grip was outstanding. I am curious how much you lose on all season tires in the summer - and realistically how much difference it makes. Other than some flat out acceleration I never truly get close to its limits going round corners - so I could happily lose some and not notice. Great vid

The all seasons ride more roughly than the summer tires (in warm weather) and the summer tire softness is noticeable when we do the switch. I did a track weekend with the P-Zeroes put on by the dealer. I caught a cotter pin in my left rear tire. The next day the organizer lent me 4 Cayman rims and tires. Those tires were more worn and a different brand than mine. I don't really what brand. On track I could sure tell the difference between the two sets of tires -- and I'm a novice. I had less confidence on the banked oval part of the track and coming out of the tightest turns the tail was much looser. I could only tell because I drove them on back to back days on the same track in the same weather but it was very clear one was better than the other at the limit

What if you feel like the 981 has too much grip and want more oversteer and general sliding fun. I think it's good to have a balance between grip and controllable oversteer. You don't want it sliding all over the place at low speeds but you want to be able to break traction a bit when you're trying to.

I think the all seasons would give plenty of a chance to break the rear loose. The summer tires in the winter are scary -- I say that now having a series of warmer days where I've hit the back roads hard this winter with the all season tires.

All a person need do is read the specifications on his tires. A person can void the warranty on his tires when he drives them out of spec and the damage done to the tire will indicate to manufacture rep. that the tires were operated out of spec. I simply keep my Mustang GT in the garage when the temperature drops below 20 F. Y our video is pretty silly. Just read the specs before you make the purchase.

When you buy a car and the tires are on it, you face this question if the car came on summer tires. GT Performance Pack 1 cars come on summer tires, but GT's with the 18 or 20 inch rims come on all seasons, as I recall. But which numbers on the tire relate to summer vs. winter compound?
