Uni days are probably the best place to experiment, to try new things and to fail without much consequences. At the moment u start work, failure comes with consequences.
To be fair though, not everyone can afford a tertiary education, and may have to enter the job market earlier
It's a cycle back to the early 60s, where generations like my parents start working after completing primary or secondary educations, only to realise that educations are important to continuous improvement. Thus, comes my generation where studying in university became a goal of life. It has been this way until Covid and MCO hit in and suddenly younger generations realise it is easier to earn thru gig jobs rather than study and become employees. Added with the influences on social media where people sharing lavish lifestyle, it became 'how fast can I bring the money to my table?', instead of thinking for future growth.
Actually, it's easier now for tertiary education with ptptn loans. It's whether they have the willpower to do so. But, with the younger generation being impatient to get rich sooner, they don't see the long term benefits. They just compare how much a grab driver or most successful influencer earns. They don't measure how sustainable their income could be.
Yess it kinda good, but it depend on which course you choose.. if you choose course that is hard then you probably end your early 20 in room doing assignment tho🤷♂️..
If and if only you can afford to study in a university.
The different between going to University and not going to university is how the person spend their time for that 3 to 4 years time. For those who are in University, they have to go through "structured" training course, which they have to put in effort and they are being monitor the result. But for those who are not in University, they will have to depend on their own effort. Unfortunately, as a human being, only those who are talented will not require a system to monitor their effort. Majority of us are not having that talent! for me, if a youngster tell me, they do not want to go to University, I will give them 6 months. 6 months is enough to show a result!
You can skip university if you have a passion, discipline, and solid goal to work towards, as well as the plans and means to achieve it. You should not skip university because it is difficult and you want to earn money faster.
Eg : you can skip university to do Grab if you want to earn money for your capital to move to New Zealand to own an apple orchard. But you should not skip university to do Grab because you want an easy way to earn money now and afford your new iphone.
Depends on the goal of the person, the degree has its purpose.
It's just not everyone needs a degree, you can go for professional certifications. For example if I want to hire a networking expert (as in computer networks la) then a person CCNA certification holds a far higher value to me than say a person with a general Degree in IT. Same if I want someone to watch over my company finance, an ACCA certified individual would have priority over one with general Degree in Business.
You can't get a CFA without a degree that's for sure.

Acca basic entry qualification is Degree. Degree qualification in Business can exempted many Acca papers. 😄

From what I see ACCA FOUNDATION IN ACCOUNTANCY (FIA) requirement is SPM, even on their official website it doesn't say one requires a degree to begin their journey in ACCA.

There are hundreds of thousand of candidates holding the same degrees/diploma .. at the end of the day - the one with the right attitude stands out.
Degree education should be a process of letting the mind mature and stretching it so that the mind is resilient, creative and is able to solve a multitude of different problems.
I would disagree, here in Malaysia at least . Uni education is swallowing what lecturers throw at you and regurgitate all it out during exam . And that is the measuring stick of success. What creativity. All a sack of horseshit .
I'm going to uni and I'm faced with nothing but classmates who half-ass their parts in group assignments or projects, who won't budge until you tell them what needs to be done (no initiative), who are just difficult to work with in general. I'm faced with the fact that I can give my best in everything I do, yet things will not work out. Hard work will not be paid off because it comes down to luck. Luck is what kind of group members I'm assigned to work with, what kind of people is within my reach that I can be connected to. NOTHING IS FAIR, NOTHING IS WITHIN MY CONTROL. I don't know where all my hard work, blood, sweat and tears went to. It kinda shows in midterm tests, but in the end, my pointer is average anyway (stuck at 3.45-3.55). And I'm working with people who absolutely tanked their tests. I should try and make better connections? The problem is you can give, give and give but no one wants to give back!! In the end, you're just being used. Everything is one-sided. I don't even have a friend that I actually cherish in this degree programme. It's just cut-throat. Awful.

You video made me think hard about the future. Not for myself, since I'm already a graduate and got a job, but the future of Malaysia.
As per your video, people don't go because of poor curriculum, gig economy, and becoming influencers. I also think people give themselves excuses by saying tertiary education is expensive, and results are not guaranteed.
In the future, I forsee that demand for cheap, high quality education available in a part time or recording format will be come in high demand. Stuff like Khan Academy, Udemy, and Brilliant are good, but I think there's tremendous opportunity in more directed education opportunities.
Meaning, we can't wait for confused youngsters to realize their mistakes and upskill themselves. Instead, we go to those who are searching for talent, and provide them with cheap training opportunities in recording and part time format.
This may even change the hiring landscape. Instead of employer's giving training to those they already hired, they can have a 2 stage hiring process. Where for the first stage, employees get hired as interns, with an opportunity to get cheap, general education related to the employers industry. The second stage would be permanent employees with a probation period, where more expensive, but higher quality and focused training is provided. The two stage hiring process can let companies be more sure about the talent they hire too.
For revenue model, it can also be two stages. First stage is a consulting and solution fee we get from employers to design a curriculum for their potential hires. Second stage is a subscription fee we collect from employees.
Promotion is also important. I think directed learning that screams "you'll definitely get to use the knowledge you learn" is much more marketable than the current secondary education curriculum. If done right, there could be an upskill movement we could start where gig economy workers and low skill workers realize how GDP works, and learn of a pathway to make themselves high pay. It'd be amazing if we could get the government involved
I just thought about this, and I think there's much to be discussed and refined, but I just graduated and have too much on my hands. I'd be happy if someone takes the idea and goes with it, but if nobody does, I'll do it myself once I become more financially stable haha

The problem with degree education is chain from politics down to the supply line. Company and organization started university not because they want to educate younger generation out for the work force, but because the drill of "oh must get a degree to succeed" mentality parents. College and university especially private offering geek education program that is a trend now and dust few years after, many of such program pop up to try and capture as much youngster to register as possible, weighting them down with at least 100k debt with no industrial guarantee for work.
After graduation, you are on your own. Many that is business heavy relying on exploiting cheap labor for work are the mid level business owners, to them your degree means jack shit, they know that they will have to train you even after degree and your demand for salary is way beyond his budget. So if anything a unskilled worker can learn from the internet they will hire them instead, the range of 5k below jobs are all self train and learn able by themselves, which means the degree holder have to dog fight with other unskilled but willing to learn work ready non degree competition.
There is too much business owner prefer budget over quality, not to mention they aren't guarantee a skilled worker either from degree holders. Have you seen how many people cheat their way trough college just for that piece of degree? Rich with degree pay lecturers to finish their fyp, Poor degree holders have a number of them really study, while the others find ways to cheat to get the degree. And college/uni is not teaching them industry ready skill to apply in real world, its more of the same style from primary and secondary memorize for exam to win. Vocational school get bad rep for being a hands on skill even though they earn fairly well in their respective skills. Then you have the unknown IT zone where value isn't fix like doctor , lawyer or engineer. They are considered jack of all trades especially non programming skilled. And a huge pile of them is swimming in a cesspool filled with china man business owners whom would exploit them in anyway.
Then you have gov that is fuked, education ate shit for decades, no one even try to reform, under skilled or no option students, dropouts and spm leavers apply for teacher's job, one of the MOST important job in the entire nation, under valued, under appreciated, under paid. A few really passionate still try to keep teaching alive, the rest? Ask you to not ask so many question, just memorize for straight A. Good student in the past use to worth something, now when I see straight A student all I think of is the nation building over flow number of memorizing machine.
Gov instead of forming a task force to make bold change instead make weird spontaneous change base off their liking. No spend real time to think about industrial regulation, strengthen law against company that tend to exploit work force. Protecting business reputation.
We don't have to look far, just look at singapore. when you say you pay for a company's service you pay for the "best" quality. Sure in their sense perhaps their pay and cost of living boggles down their capability to live above B40, compare to us? Hell you may pay the same dolor, but the company sure as hell is putting monkeys into work and the rest of the money is in the pockets of the business owner. They don't care much about reputation here, to them .... as much into their pocket as possible is the normal practice.
Just a few days back I heard the PM ask public to list feedback and suggestion ...... like seriously if ya run out of "why the country suck" answer means like other party in this country none have actual clue how to fix the country.
Don't get me wrong, I love this country even though everything is shit, I just feel so helpless that the country actual bright politician aren't given a real chance while the garbage tier politician is playing possum. When people list out the problem, they tend to always fight back like winning a debate gets some pride points and shit.
Let me give you one example, in the past when Maszlee (ex-education) was given a chance to change education, I was excited, especially since he went on japan to visit. What was I expecting? Well, japan have robust food culture, and plan with systematic food option build to cater maximum benefit to the public young, key food ... natto, I was expecting perhaps he could migrate key option like those, maybe work together with business interested to grow and supply our own natto, put them into the kid's breakfast program and maybe a few of our local healthy option. What was brought back instead? Yes a breakfast program, but none of those healthy shit, instead you have high carb, sugary packet diet that guarantee to build future diabetic patient. Even the more health conscious parents are avoiding those kind of breakfast and willing to spend more for better quality for their kids instead, we end up a half bake program that run short with wasted resource and miss opportunity.
Don't forget, our current younger generation is already in sync with japanese culture, we LOVE their food, and some even follow their food diet as it has proven to balance the body out. So what have our active gov learn looking east? Nothing. If they did learn from the east ...... let the god dmn public know.
As for the video, well I too know that degree is important especially for career, but lets not kid ourselves, its only important for very specific class of work, especially progression that have skill with a fix price on task they perform. Any career that allow you the flexibility to haggle the value of your skill is a waste of money to pursue a degree. Exception on f&b.

@Mowlous Today job market needs Degree holder even for just an admin assistant job. Degree isn't important for those want to become own boss. Like me as a real example, I am Diploma holder and age 45 years old but currently unemployed for almost 8 years because I am non Degree holder. If I got a Degree, I can easily choose any kind of high salary job. Last time, I also think like youngsters now, no money to university, work first then after get a diploma, lots of bad things happened that can spend lots of money. Then delay until my age now but lots of employer don't want to hire me because I am not a degree holder. My cousins who was age 53 years old and holds a Degree still can get a job. Now she being promoted as an Admin manager. So Degree is important when you are in the middle age. 😊
@@shancileong970 I don't disagree that a degree is important, but as I say, there are jobs that rely on degree that your portfolio is second to your qualification, while many current degree in the market are portfolio focus especially digital and creative work. and the market of selling soft skill as a degree in the country is way higher then actual skills that need to be verified trough a degree ... I have a lot of friends on different fields to be able to tell you that those whom wanted to venture into skills like programing and had not have a degree where forced to head back to college to get one, while creative work doing for company or freelance had their degree stash somewhere in the dark store room for almost 20 years and had never needed to present them when they find work, maybe in terms of price hiring people will negotiate a bit for price difference. But for that you will have to pay up front 100k on average, and this are the standard range a degree is priced this days. If your job will not see a 15k return on average after 5 years of work you'll be spending a good chunk of those time working to pay back loan. If you don't have to borrow to get a degree .... sure, but if you have to borrow to get a degree ...... make sure that degree count for inflation as well as your future course. If its not guaranteed, better not stuck in debt just so you have a piece of paper earning roughly the same amount as what the average vendor earn.

Welp, im a public uni student grads, after i grad ,im working as engineer with low income RM 2000 for 2 year and fed up. Then i apply vocational study as welding inspector which requires SPM ONLY and 3 years as welder. Now im earning 5 time more than what is used to be... From my perspective, depends what are you looking forward to, some degrees are not relevant due to obsolete syllabus especially public university. Hais, waste my time and money

Not everyone is academically inclined. We all have different talents and passions. Success can be found in all fields of endeavour. In some countries, tradesmen such as plumbers can earn more than graduates, more so when there is a glut of graduates and not enough plumbers. So no, getting that piece of paper may not be the best or right choice. Not a one size fits all.

Yes, for sure, but results are worth even more. For industries where it's possible to earn results by oneself, I think employers ar empire interested in their experiences and achievements.
The factor to focus on is self learning opportunities. How cheap are they, how available are they, and how relevant are they? The higher quality self learning opportunities get, the less useful a degree
When it comes to infrastructure, university is a must.

It is not wrong to work after completed SPM because nowdays it is money concern.. Everything is money..anyone can work and they also can do part-time study...to improve themselves.Working and Partime study at the same time... Youngsters are full of energy...we should motivate them.That is my point.
You go to uni, ideally, to learn to think & challenge your preconceived notions. It's the time to explore new horizons, make new friends from different cultural backgrounds, try new roles, join new groups or clubs, and pick up or drop hobbies.
If you do it right, by the time you finish your studies, you'll be independent and be able to solve real problems and contribute to the society- which will make invaluable as an employee/employer/entrepreneur/activist/ or whatever you wish to do.

Actually, Degree only for those jobs like lawyer, in medicine, engineering then yes you must go to uni to get a degree. But if you choose something else like IT and coding jobs you can learn that for free from google themselves

So choose a good school also gives u an advantages especially if u are fresh graduate as we have too many graduates in the market to choose so employer will choose graduates from reputation school. Formal tertiary education is to get a certificate which makes you have more advantages in the traditional labour market. In other words, it widens your options and increase your negotiation power. Some people said that they don't care about the education level of the candidates(some of them said this for political correctness, and it turns out to be a reason to low ball you), that is not the whole story. Most MNCs have their own career progression policy that still need at least a degree certificate.
The education is never ended, the formal education system teaches you to be a good worker with skills needed by market, you need to have life-long learning. We all need two kind of educations, one is the formal education system, another one is you learn from the society and real life.
Some questions for youngsters going or not going for a tertiary education:
1. If you are financially capable to go for a tertiary education and you choose not to, can you tell what are the advantages the path you choose are greater than a tertiary certificate?
2. Other than your certificate, what makes you competitive?
3. With the evolution of AI, most industry landscape are changing fast. With or without the certificate, what makes you irreplaceable by AI?
They all want to be a RUclipsr because RUclipsr job is fair for all. No age discrimination, No education discrimination, No sex discrimination. Some of the RUclipsr earn more money than a Degree holder, then now the RUclipsr start up an advertising company or studios. Now the RUclipsr use their earning go to private university. 🙂
The problem is that certain courses in tertiary education include subjects which are totally useless for getting a job and yet are forced down students' throats. Some university courses are getting out of touch with industry needs. I took up a college diploma in which some lecturers are so geriatric and outdated and yet are in their jobs due to their purported credentials.
in malaysia jobs nowadays even if you get a degree, its gonna end up on you having minimum wage
Many tertiary schoolers I know enrolled thru peer pressure, and do not quite learn and acquire proper skills sets while at it. I've been in corporate real estate last 22 years and encountered lots of young adults & post-graduates who aren't English conversant, can't draft formal letters, lack confidence in liaising with senior corporate execs, care only about making sales but no knowledge of the economy & struggle to understand company needs. They can likely make minimal living among the masses in near future but aren't quite cut-outs at higher professional levels long term. in conclusion, plan and execute your tertiary investment (time included) wisely.
Uni degree years needs to be lessen, replaced with paid internship, all this BS extra government subjects need to go away, and fees needs to be significantly cheaper and more modules need to be from online.
No. Uni syllabus is outdated and overpriced. Unless you want to be a professional like lawyer, doctor etc...its a waste of time and money. You can learn better and more valuable things online these days. I will not ask my child to go to uni and instead save the money and buy her a condo.

Get a degree/diploma if
1. Your financial approves
2. You are pursuing professional jobs (doctors, lawyers)
3. You just want to get a Business Degree
Dont get a diploma/degree if
1. You really know your stuff which is inheriting business from parents
2. You really know your strengths is direct selling
3. You are pursuing common courses (accountant, engineer)
Number 3 is because you spend few years studying and end up with 2k salary which of course unless you’re super talented in that industry then you can proceed.
When I look back, I am glad my parent send me to University. Otherwise I won't even able to imagine what I missed and where I would end up after 10 years.
A lot of places don't need degrees. University trains you to be more organised etc

I mean . if you're talking about Ai will be replacing the low-skilled workers. I think Malaysia might need to take more than 10 years . I do agree , getting a degree is important but not fundamental . But , low-skilled workers should consider about their next 10 years , they need to learn how to plan , financial controls , even need to learn some soft-skills . Ai is powerful , but some fields are still need human to do it .
Most it jobs will be redundant in 7 years or so

Solution: change education system
1. Lecturers needs exp in reallife world jobs
2. Lame MPU subjects need to remove/change (except anything about useful in real life skills)
3. Needs more credit hour on core subjects
4. Never consider cheating if got any asisted software helps you

The problem might be on the university. The uni I attended (I studied music), all the lecturers were professional musicians working in the industry. Some are touring artists who take a semester or even one year off from teaching. One of our lecturers is the copyist of Final Fantasy soundtrack and even invited the composer to our uni to give a weeklong workshop.

Guys its better to have some level of tertiary degree on important fields such as
1. Doctors
2. Engineering (all kinds)
3. Lawyers
and those classical jobs that Asian parents always wants you to have. It has its own merits
but if you somehow decided not want to have a tertiary degree and you have resources such as internet, an ok laptop, i recommend learning programming. Get to know stuff such as Machine learning using python, android app development, excel micro/vbase development and so on. Tutorials are free on youtube and setting up is not that difficult but be adviced, not going for tertiary education will make your life a little bit harder in long run as your competition is very stiff. You might be intelligent but always remember there will always be someone who is more intelligent and more qualified so be best equipped as best as you can
Degrees will always be useful and having a safe environment to learn and nurture the skills needed to fulfill your career path is why universities exists. There are many workplaces where degrees are a must since specific skills are required to handle infrastructures and situations. However university can also reveal potential outside the realm of a degree holder.
Uni education today mostly did not provide the necessary exposure to its relevant job . Save for several degrees which provides lengthy on site education such as in the medical field .
I would say , get a diploma. Work in the relevant field . ( Some employers do provide further study opportunities. Etc Sunway. ) Get one for free and get an extra 2-3 years contract.

Even if people graduated on uni, and get certificates or degrees it doesn't mean they will accept by company easily. In current day societies the companies don't really care if the job seekers have certificate or not, they only judge them during interviews and their attitude when they are talking. There are even some people who graduated in harvard uni, and end up unemployed to this day.
Depends on professions. Some professions can make do without formal schooling but not others.
Also these days there are many graduates. So not everyone will be hired because not everyone who obtained a degree/cert is skilled. Plus good attitude & social skills may also be important requirements when hiring.
To most more hiring managers the minimal way of measuring a fresh grad candidate has the minimal knowledge & skillset is through the deg/cert before they can be granted a chance for an interview.

It is a "fast and furious" era now. Kids nowadays are with their very own "my way" of life. How many younger generation stay in a job for long no matter how good or bad their education background and how good/bad the company providing all sorts of perks/benefits. We all are running on a free flow mode that shape the nation nowaday affected by the happenings around us which may end up either good or bad. We can see the major difference of the older and younger generation way of living their "successful" life. We witnessed the outcomes of the older generation, as for the younger generation there are much to be seen in days to come.

Hard to convince others when an influencer who became rich from selling properties and from being an influencer but asking others to go to the University right? That's the conundrum facing the young these days... If they look up to you, they will emulate you...
Why not asking someone who has "made it" via going to the University and working up through the corporate ladder to convince the young ones?... Are they much more "successful"? Its 2023, uni tbh start to became not relevant for certain course like business, it, design, etc. Unless you pursue medical and engineering and other, then ya, uni will be my first and only choice. Most of the company were hunger for candidate skills and experience

Well, you need to think of the cost to study is very expensive, not every one can afford it.

I would say yes, unless you already have a skill you planned to hone that doesnt require tertiary education or a successful full day business. Going to university broadens your mind, you get to make connections, know many people from all parts of the country, even the world, you get to know how people think, how people learn, see how others grow. Improve your language skills, presentation skills,etc.
I do think smma can be succesful for everyone its hard but if u do it right u can succeed university is also good but with the situation in malaysia i doubt it

I would say hiring a person with "common sense" and "problem solving skills" is much much much more important than the degree. Hiring someone to "solve your problem" vs "finding problems for your to solve" is a BIGGGG difference!

I think the problem is young people doesnt know what working life look like. If they dont know, they cannot plan. Most people think going to university and working is different phase but I think university and early working is the same phase. When go to U, a person should start working on the field he study. Example, if he wants to be a cook, work in a restaurant kitchen. Once he leave U, join a good restaurant to horn his skill and build good resume. And work 80 hours a week for next 15 years Sounds tough? Welcome to real life.
Is degree a must? No, hard work and perseverance is more important. My younger brother didnt finish high school but he makes more money than me. Both of us work hard. But he takes more risk because if he fails, he doesnt has much back up; if I get retrench, just find another job.
People with more education tends to be more risk adverse. When someone who is earning minimum wage tries something else and fails, this person has potentially lost that minimum wage. Someone who is earning RM8K a month who tries something else and fails has potentially lost RM8K per month.
