I don’t hv zippers, but was wondering about getting them. But I thought it wd be easier to baste the zippers onto the quilt back and top by matching centers, wrong sides touching to the zip; sew 1/4” from the edge; and use as long of a basting stitch as my reg machine can do. Stitch from center mark to each end. Yes, there wd be basting to remove at the end, but I figured it wd be a whole lot less standing and reaching. I hv a bad back. Also, it wd be more accurate than eyeballing the edge to the zip, and wd only use an extra 1/4” of backing, each end. I understand why you choose to pin the bottom edge of the backing at the frame. That makes sense. But what do you think of my basting idea? I thought it also might be faster and less getting stuck w the pins! 😂
I've definitely heard of people choosing to do a basting stitch to attach the zippers to the quilt back, but I've always used pins. Do whatever works best for you!
Ooops, just realized I mis-spoke: on the backing it wd be right side of backing to wrong side of zip, as the backing goes face down, and in the method I envisioned, there wd be a slight fold over along where it’s attached to the zip. Please don’t think I was being critical of your method; I just wondered if you thought my idea was feasible or not. I haven’t seen anybody basting the zips on and was surprised at that.
I also have an Avante and have used the zippers for about 5 years. I pin it differently than you but I love them.
Love that you got right to the video
I have an Avante and use zippers to but I baste my zippers on with my domestic machine.
