Its not compulsory. In case of acrylic painting, gesso is applied to give various textures to the surface you are painting on. Some people like rough surfaces, some like smooth depending on the subject of their painting. So it completely depends on you whether you want to use gesso or not. Gesso is mostly applied on paper in case of oil painting as the oil in the paint tends to seep into the paper and gesso prevents this from happening. I hope this helped.

Gesso helps the paint sit on top of the paper, you'll use less paint. Paint is way more expensive than gesso. So it just makes sense
