For a student even cheap canvases can be quite expensive, plus they take up a lot of space in a small flat. So I'm very grateful that you can paint on paper as well and have been doing it for a while 😊

1:50 stretch paper a lil before gesso
    3:20
4:40 sand each gesso layer to create some tooth so 2nd and 3rd layer can stick
8:50 sketchbooks from years ago with no cracking, this gesso he uses is very flexible and won’t crack as much as oil ground

Gene when I tried this and began my acrylic under-painting (not oils) the paper buckled and was wavy, uneven. I had taped it down really well. It was thick heavy professional drawing paper. ... Any ideas of what I may have done wrong?

@@arttutorials2415 I agree. I've tried a few different papers now and it's still buckling :( The paper he's using must be really, really thick.

I use mixed media paper or watercolor paper. It works great and the surface is smooth. If your paper is thin you need to gesso both sides. I put a last coat of acrylic paint, brown or gray and it is good to go. I hope this helps. Blessings and be safe.

you can have a water wash applied to paper beforehand to further stretch it before applying gesso. it would require you to have a pretty thick paper though, 300 gsm(grams per square meter) and up.

(I’m 57) pero fuera de bromas, I practice a lot, 5 six hours. on days I gotta work (gotta eat) at least 3 hours. 7 days a week 365 days a year. Me encanta su pintura, no entiendo lo contemporáneo. Art that takes garbage & calls it art in order to get money isn’t art, it’s a scam. Caesar Santos is the real deal! A true artist

You are an inspiration, Cesar. I love your classic approach to portraiture. I am going to apply this to my work and intend to purchase some of your videos. My 4th Great Grandmother's younger brother was Marquess William Grimaldi. He was a miniature portrait painter in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Mainly painting watercolour on ivory or enamel on copper. I own one of his enamels. I have not used oils very much, so want to give it a try. I am a sculptor by profession, but still love to paint. Have now subscribed to your channel. Loved your interview with Andrew Tischler.

ive been using oil based wood Primer on paper as a base for oil paint, for more than 30 years now. it must be the primer, not undercoat. you can mix the oil paint with it to get a nice start to a painting, it dries in a few hours and takes following layers very well. ive not tried gesso yet.

Thank you for introducing me to oil painting on paper. I used to stretch my own canvas and linen. I love the effect produced. Using a spatula to spread the gesso has worked well. I am using Arches 140 # cold press water color paper and am pleased with the results. Finished art is is varnished with Gamsol. My question is this,... How do I display and mount for hanging ? Finished art is 11 x 14" or 18 x 24" or 15 x 22," much larger than other demos I've seen on You Tube. Thank you again Ceasar.

Do you have tips on choosing sizing? I believe rabbit glue is the oldest used, but it absorbs moisture from the air. I'm stumped between Gamblin PVA which seems more flexible, or Golden GAC 400 followed by 100 which would make it more rigid. Does it come down to personal preference?

The oils are absorbed by the paper fibers. Eventually the will break down and cause your artwork to disolve. The gesso ground prevents the absorption making the art last longer.

Applying this ground you can also use a variety of different mediums if you like and have excellent "tooth". When I apply the ground I add different color to the ground for different background colors.

@@jeffhreid Yup I can confirm, I had to buy a second sketch book for use when I tried this, because it took over a week (I had some unfortunate thicker parts of paint). I think I'll try it with liquin next, which should mean it dries in a day or so. The plus side it's kind of badass to have oil paintings in your sketch book.

I'm a little confused about this. First, if you are using a watercolour sketchbook, why not use gouache or acrylic rather than oils? Is it that you want to always increase skills specifically in oils? Second, I have a Pochade box so I can store my wet panels after a time in the field, but if I use a sketchbook then isn't it more awkward to transport back, since you have to keep the sketchbook open and let nothing touch it the whole time? Once done, I agree it is great having real oil painting amongst the notes and pencil/charcoal drawings, and I can see that it can take the pressure off, since it is psychologically 'just a sketch'.

...Could this be an alternative to stretching watercolor-paper? I hate stretching watercolor paper, it's always a hit-and-miss.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to size canvases anymore. Acrylic gesso works as both size and ground.

What is the problem with oil paper that is already ready to paint on like arches or others?
