So I've been thinking of trying my hand at acrylics but I didn't know where to begin or anything about acrylics. Hey! A beginner painter here. I bought acrylic paints recently and started painting in my handmade paper diary. Was turning out to be a big challenge somehow. I wasn't able to blend as the paint dried too quickly. Almost felt like giving up. That's when I came across your video and was happy to know that's it's not just me, acrylic does dry faster on paper compared to canvas. Thanks a ton! ❤ PS. You are such a pro. Thanks for not gatekeeping and helping others.
Oh my gosh, thank you SO much for this amazing comment!!! I especially appreciate that last bit, it means so much to me to be able to take away stress for other painters. Have fun painting in a handmade book, that sounds like a dream!!!
@@MarianneVanderDussen oh god, you actually replied! ❤️ Quick question. Got gesso. I saw you applied a single coat but I have seen tutorials with multiple coats and evening it out with sandpaper. What do we actually need to do??? Also, can we tape the edges first and then gesso? What's the order?
@@sonaligarg98 Great questions! Okay, so there's no "right" answer here, but simply different results that will arise from how you proceed. You absolutely can do multiple coats and sand them out with sandpaper, that will create a smoother surface and allow your brush to glide a little better. I always do that on my canvases, and sometimes do it to my paper, but my suggestion is to try it out and see what you think! In terms of when to gesso, I've done it both ways, but I now typically gesso after the tape, just because the gesso then creates a nice seal and prevents any paint from sneaking underneath the tape. Then I get really crisp edges 🙂 I'm always happy to reply to questions and to help where I can! Happy painting!
Where do you get the inspiration from and where do you get the references from because I try looking on google for. A reference but it’s really hard to find something good. Your art inspires me a lot I love it and where did you get the vintage cozy cottage reference photo from because I cant find anything good
Such beautiful colours! I never paint on paper so this video has lots of useful new info. Btw, I'd love to see a few minutes of you just mixing lots of your colour recipes. Hi from New Zealand 🙂
Hey Ashleigh from New Zealand! So I genuinely considered having a few minutes just of colour mixing, but I decided against it because I was afraid it'd be too boring 🤦♀but this kind of feedback really helps. I'll maybe do an entire video devoted just to colour mixing!
I am so happy that you picked up some new techniques, and that you enjoyed the feeling of the video! I absolutely love teaching, so feedback like this makes me so happy!
Great tutorial Dear.... Can't wait to start mine...may be it will not coming out beautifully but I have to try.....I have a too much anxiety and fear of blank page...But I think it's the perfect time to start...❤❤❤

I love everything in this! Overall.. a stunning work of art! The voice over is very clear. The workplace is so clean that it looks like a showroom! The tip on the use of the wet palette will be very helpful to me. I love your peonies on canvas and I can’t wait to be on your sketchbook tour on the botanicals. Impressive! Inspiring! Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, I'm so happy you like how the studio looks (I can't do clutter in my workspace, it makes me feel agitated), and I'm so happy the voiceover came through nice and clear. Have an amazing day!!!
I really love your videos! I appreciate your meticulousness, neatness, organization and simplicity of the workspace. As far as I've seen in other artists, it's rare. There's usually a creative mess 😀. I myself have these characteristics, along with the need for neatness and cleanliness of the surface and space around me, and since I am learning to paint with acrylics, now I know that it is possible to transfer all this into my future work. Thank you so much! You captivate me with your art and offer exactly what I need.
You’re exactly like me! I can’t think or work when things are a mess, I get too distracted by clutter. My room is pretty small so if I don’t stay on top of it then it could spiral out of control quickly. I hope you enjoy the learning process of working with acrylics, happy painting!
Thank you very much for this very informative and inspiring video! I am from Canada too (near Ottawa) and I paint mainly landscapes with acrylics on watercolor paper to make cards to be offered to my friends. I suspected that retarder, and even open golden acrylics, don’t make a very noticeable improvment in drying time, but it is helpful to hear someone else comments on this.
Oh what a lovely idea! I LOVE Ottawa, one of my favourite places to visit for inspiration. I always feel so energized and ready to create after I go. I bet your friends love your acrylic landscape cards, what a thoughtful gift!
@@MarianneVanderDussen My favorite places for both relaxation and inspiration in Ottawa are Hog’s Back park, the experimental farm and, of course, the Rideau canal including the Commisionners Park during the Tulip Festival. On the Quebec side, but very close to Ottawa, I love Wakefield, a lovely town next to the Ottawa River, and the Gatineau Park. 😍 I emailed you some pictures via Instagram.

Love the way you narrate your tutorial. ❤ The stay wet palettes look a bit not so yammy to me, but it sounds like they really fulfill great their purpose. Don't they? 😊 I have little experience with acrylics, so it is eyeopening for me to know that they dry even faster on paper. Thank you for a very useful and such and esthetically beatiful video! ❤
Thank you so much! The wet palettes work great, especially for anyone frustrated by the fast dry time of acrylic paint. I’m so happy you liked the look and feel of the video too!
Absolutely stunning, Marianne! Thank you so much for all the tips-I've been waiting to really dive into the acrylic sketchbook until you made this (probably from my fear of messing up due to missing a crucial step I didn't know I'd need! e.g., the foam brush is a MUCH better idea than trying to smooth out the brush strokes with the gesso). I do have a question... although you don't use regular mediums to extend dry time, do you ever use Slow-dri to dip your brush in to keep the blending time longer? Or mist the picture during the process to keep it slightly damp?
Great question!!! I’ve never actually tried dipping my brush in slow-dri when working on paper, or misting the picture, because I have just leaned into the quick dry time and adjusted everything accordingly! I’ll definitely give it a try though… and if you do too, can you also leave a comment so that everyone else who reads this also knows the results?
@@MarianneVanderDussen I have used it with a few acrylics I've done on illustration board, but they were highly layered paintings with clear leveling gel between each layer-a different style of acrylic. The Slow-Dri was used to dip my brush in conjunction with medium in the paint, so all the painting was definitely more translucent. However, I haven't really used the Slow-Dri solely by itself yet. I will definitely try as soon as I can get to my next acrylic, which should be some time this next week. I'd be happy to drop a note as to how it went!
Your videos are such a delightful treat to watch❤. I have a purchased plastic wet palette with the sponge and special palette papers. I’m wondering, how do you cover the butcher tray when you take a break from painting and want to keep the paint wet? Or do you start with a fresh layer of waxed paper each painting session?
The paint will stay wet on wet palette for the day, but I typically discard the wax paper and start fresh if I am painting on a different day. I’ve heard that some people use saran wrap to keep their paints fresh, but I prefer just to start new because the wet palette does eventually water down the paint. If I leave it for an hour or so to have lunch, the paint stays wet without needing to be covered.
I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond! I am going to do some tests with varnish, I've gotten a bunch of questions on Instagram about the pages sticking together. I will figure it out and let you know!
Thanks for the motivating video. I would like to use more acrylic. But how can I prevent my pages from sticking together? Do you also know the problem?
Thank you so much!!! I’m so grateful for feedback like this, it means the world to me to be able to provide a positive learning experience. I learned how to paint through RUclips so I want to pay it forward. I’m so happy you clicked on this too!!
You totally can! I just do it because I find that it slows the absorption of the paint by the paper a little bit, and when you’re painting on paper with acrylic, every second counts! But if you don’t want to, or don’t happen to have any gesso, you’re totally fine to do it without, I’ve done so in the past with no issue. Happy painting!
@@redcrown9698 Yay I'm so excited!!! I'm releasing a brand new acrylic sketchbook painting tutorial this Friday, I think you'll love it, it's my favourite so far! You'll have to let me know what you think 🥰
I purchased Canson Acrylic paper and the first time I used it it’s buckling like crazy. Do I even have to gesso paper that is specifically made for acrylics? Any ideas on what to do?
So I usually gesso and give a light sanding on paper even when it says it’s preprimed just because I like the feeling of it, but if the paper says it’s pre-primed you can make the call! For buckling, even with my watercolour paper, I still tape or clip the paper down which seems to train it to lie flat even when it’s wet. It still buckles while wet a bit, then flattens itself out. If there’s a way for you to tape the paper down while you’re working, it might help!
@@MarianneVanderDussen thank you! I have now gessoed(sp?) it. But I had it taped down originally to a board and my first underpainting coat just made it buckle. I appreciate your response very much.
If you don't mind my stupid question: What surfaces do acrylic artists practice on? It seems like they often practice on canvas. So does that mean each practice session = one canvas? I've always wanted to give acrylic painting a try, but I'm afraid that I don' t have space to store all those canvases. Unless there's another method that I'm missing out.
Hi there, that’s not a stupid question at all! That’s totally justified and there’s a great solution. Try using a canvas board. If you want the experience of the canvas, but don’t have a lot of storage room, a canvas board is a thin, inexpensive alternative. It’s a piece of canvas that has been glued to a surface such as MDF. You can get them so that they are archival, which means that they will last a very long time, but it gives you the opportunity to practice on a canvas surface without worrying about storing all of your efforts somewhere. I use them to create samples, test paint swatches, and sometimes if I want to create a painting that I want in a specific frame, I’ll use a canvas board instead because it fits in most standard frame sizes. They are very inexpensive and easily available, give them a try! And never hesitate to ask a question, that’s what I’m here for.
Lovely painting👌 Is it possible to paint this scene or a brighter spring field scene using acrylic paint with water as the medium.....as in watercolour painting....i m sure it wud be awesome. Bye for now.
Hi, I have a Royal Talens sketchbook to try gouache, but the paper is starting to buckle with only the first layer of water. I've seen oil artists prep their sketchbooks with gesso. Could you use this as a way to thicken a 'lower' quality sketchbook? I'd rather try and adjust my current sketchbooks, then fork out money for new one, especially since i have less room.
Hi there! So gesso isn’t going to thicken the paper, unfortunately, but you can always try it and see if you like it to paint on! What I always do, especially if I’m working with a thinner paper, is that I clip the pages down with binder clips, to train the paper to lie flat even when it’s wet. Then leave the binder clips on when you’re working. I’ve unfortunately learned my lesson the hard way after painting with paper that would buckle for years. It’s just so frustrating, that I find it’s worth the extra little investment to get the thicker paper. But, if you wanted to push your way through the sketchbook, I think that clipping the pages down will help. The pages will buckle while you’re working on them, and they will dry kind of wrinkly, but if your goal is to practice and you’re not planning to make prints on them, it doesn’t really matter, since it’s just for you. I hope this helps! Happy painting!
@@MarianneVanderDussen Hi, thanks for replying so swiftly. I always saw oil artists, like Cesar Santos use it in their sketchbooks before painting, so that's what I assumed was one of its uses. I only have small clips, would that work or would you suggest it be best if you clip down the cover as well as the paper? My Xmas list includes more expensive sketchbooks, but in the meanwhile I'll trying to use my Royal Talents as best as I can. I heard it was an all-round mixed media sketchbook, so I'm disappointed with it so far. The warping doesn't bother me as much as it changes the texture of the paper itself. It's much rougher, like the paper is being worn away. Thanks for the advice.
I paint on a hard paper. Basically, stacks of smooth cardboard like paper, but I want to know what can i use to varnish it so it doesn't look dried out. I hope you can understand what i am saying. Thanks in advance
So are you hoping to restore the sheen of your acrylic painting? When you say dried out, do you mean that it looks flat? If so, there’s a few things you can do. You can actually use a smidge of gloss medium while you’re working to create a shinier finish, but if you’re looking to varnish after the fact, I use Kamar by Krylon. I’ve never used it on paper but there’s only one way to find out if it works! If you give it a try let me know 🥰
@@MarianneVanderDussen yes to restore. Since it's on paper, it tends to lose its vibrancy, or maybe it's exposed to too much light. I'll try your recommendation. Thanks for the help!

When I paint on my sketchbook with acrylics, the pages stick together and start pulling each other tearing each other. Is there a solution for this? What would I be doing wrong for this mishap? Thank you so much for this beautiful video. This is a beautiful paint along video. Am gonna follow this and study.
So this has been brought up multiple times through my Instagram that people experience the pages sticking! You’re certainly not alone. Mine have been okay so far, perhaps because I paint in very thin layers, but I’ve decided I’m going to experiment with various finishes this week (varnishes, waxes, etc) to see if I can help with a solution!!! I’ll keep you posted!!!
Feel free to let me know what sketchbook subjects you'd like to see covered on this channel! I'm in LOVE with sketchbooks and itching to do more, so hit me with your suggestions 🖤
Hi there, I'm using the Strathmore watercolor book, which you can find here: amzn.to/41JeNnd or you can use the Stillman & Birn Zeta series (which I like because of the hot press paper): amzn.to/3NF6L9b These are affiliate links, but I absolutely stand behind the quality of these products.
My pages don't really stick together! I've heard from some people in my art incubator that they're worried about this, so they put a piece of tracing paper or parchment paper between the pages, but for me, I haven't yet felt the need to do this and so far the book seems to be fine. Have fun!!!

@@MarianneVanderDussen I will look forward to that upcoming video Marianne! But, I have seen people like Cesar Santos paint oils in his sketchbook with just gesso on the pages.

Lovely 😍 I love water and really want to be able to paint it 🤞
You definitely will!!! Water is trickier with acrylic because of the fast dry time but 100% doable! Happy painting!
Last time i painted was in primary school
I tried to learn how to draw
And my grandparent bought me a small set of acrylics couse they thought o may like it
Im definetly hook on them
Love how fast they dry
Making some simple gradients and just mixing colours and experimenting is oddly relaxing
Never expected i would end up here
I love this tutorial! You are so clear about what you are doing. Your paintings are beautiful too! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this lovely comment, Sandra!
This was very interesting! Thank you for the insight and all tips!
You’re so welcome! Thank you for watching!
It’s very nice.
Thank you, Tiffany!!
That was such a helpful informative video. So many artists do not help beginners with colours, why those colours are used and theory behind it. So glad I found you. Great teaching.
Oh I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!! I’m currently working on a new acrylic sketchbook painting video that I’m going to be releasing very shortly where I talk about using a limited palette, so if you paint along you’ll be taught how to use only four colours to create a soft, tonal landscape. I’m really excited for this one!!!
So many techniques I had been needing in just one video! Thank you so much! From your new subscriber ❤
Oh yay!!! I’m so happy you found me and that this was helpful!!!
wow . stunning
Thank you!
I am just learning how to paint with acrylics, do you have any basic tutorials. I love painting flowers normally watercolour and I love how delicate your flowers are
Hi Sandra! I have the peony tutorial on my channel, but I also have a full course that many beginners have successfully completed! If you were interested, you can use the code RUclips30 at checkout to take $30 off. If not, I’ll be continuing to update my channel, but I think the next few tutorials I have planned will be in oil. My plan is to rev up production on my channel though, so I should have more acrylic tutorials coming out in the coming months as well! Here’s the link to the course if you wanted to check it out: courses.mariannevanderdussen.com/offers/sTGLNjHa/checkout
Great tips for drawing waves. I usually go too heavy handed but I'll try your technique. Can't wait to see more sketchbook development videos!
I think you’ll love the next one, I’ve started one entirely dedicated to botanicals and it has a vintage feeling!
Let me know how the wave technique works out for you!
A wonderful tutorial...thank you!
Thank you so much Serena! I am so grateful that you took the time to write a comment, and that you enjoyed the video. Happy painting! 🖤
I was so close to giving up on acrylics... and then I watched this video! Thank you so much for the great tips. Total game-changers for me. The acrylics stay! Lol.
Hooray!!! I’m so glad you’re giving them another go and that this was helpful!!! Thank you for watching 🥰
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching!
This is a most helpful video!! Thank you so much ❤
Oh yay! I’m so happy you found it and me, happy painting!
PS.
Quick question.
Then I get really crisp edges 🙂
I'm always happy to reply to questions and to help where I can! Happy painting!
So much incredibly valuable information packed into this video!
I’m so so happy that you found it useful!!!
Thank you. I enjoyed that and also feel like painting too. You have enlightened me 🥰
I’m so happy that you enjoyed the tutorial! Thank you so much for commenting!
Wonder full I am getting my sketch pad ready.Thanks.
Yay!!! Enjoy!!!
Where do you get the inspiration from and where do you get the references from because I try looking on google for. A reference but it’s really hard to find something good. Your art inspires me a lot I love it and where did you get the vintage cozy cottage reference photo from because I cant find anything good
Hi there! I just responded to your other comment on the cozy cottage video, I hope that helps!
Thanks so much. I got inspired by ur art and wanted to know how you do it and use the tips.
@@MarianneVanderDussen Go for it! Other painter's recipes are always something I zoom in on, never boring!
@@MarianneVanderDussen I second the motion regarding a video on color mixing! ;-)
Wow wow wow. I learn so many new techniques by watching this. I love your can-do attitude. It’s so inspiring!
I am so happy that you picked up some new techniques, and that you enjoyed the feeling of the video! I absolutely love teaching, so feedback like this makes me so happy!
Big love

Beautiful book, great work...trhere are some gems in that book.
Thank you so much!!! I love my sketchbooks beyond words, can’t wait to add more to this one soon!!!
Wow. Very Beautiful and useful tips. Double like.
I'm so so happy you enjoyed this!!!
Great tutorial Dear.... Can't wait to start mine...may be it will not coming out beautifully but I have to try.....I have a too much anxiety and fear of blank page...But I think it's the perfect time to start...❤❤❤
That’s exactly what these books are for! To dive in, make mistakes, and experiment. The blank page is an invitation to grow, learn, and have fun. I hope you enjoy!
Impressive! Inspiring! I’m a subscriber from Manila, Philippines. ❤️
I love when people tell me where they're from in the comments, I think it's so wonderful to be able to connect with artists all the way in the Philippines! Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, I'm so happy you like how the studio looks (I can't do clutter in my workspace, it makes me feel agitated), and I'm so happy the voiceover came through nice and clear. Have an amazing day!!!
Always amazingly beautiful! Thank you Marianne for sharing!
Thank you so much, Céline!!!
You made it so easy :) Thanks

My sincerest pleasure, thank you for watching!!!
do you paint directly on the gesso or do you use a first layer with white acrylic?
Straight onto the gesso!
I emailed you some pictures via Instagram.

@@MarianneVanderDussen I AM that frustrated one. But I keep telling myself I need to practice more regularly. :)
How many time it takes Gesso to dry? Thanks so much!! Amazing talent😍😍😍. I gonna try this ❤
Gesso is fast! It usually only takes an hour. Happy painting!!!
Beautiful! Do you recommend to varnish your paintings after it’s finished on paper?
I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond! I am going to do some tests with varnish, I've gotten a bunch of questions on Instagram about the pages sticking together. I will figure it out and let you know!
Thanks for the motivating video. I would like to use more acrylic. But how can I prevent my pages from sticking together? Do you also know the problem?
You’re an awesome teacher! Glad I clicked on this video. New subscriber now.
Thank you so much!!! I’m so grateful for feedback like this, it means the world to me to be able to provide a positive learning experience. I learned how to paint through RUclips so I want to pay it forward. I’m so happy you clicked on this too!!
I was just wondering, can I skip the gesso stage?
You totally can! I just do it because I find that it slows the absorption of the paint by the paper a little bit, and when you’re painting on paper with acrylic, every second counts! But if you don’t want to, or don’t happen to have any gesso, you’re totally fine to do it without, I’ve done so in the past with no issue. Happy painting!
@@MarianneVanderDussen Thanks!
is it necesarry to add gesso? is it okay if i don't?
Totally fine if you don’t! I prefer it because it slows the absorption of the paint by the paper, but it’s not a requirement 🙂
thank you! i tried out this painting, i've finnaly gotten out of my art block thanks to you. i love your channel
Do you have video for the next half? love to know the how to pain the second one
I wish! I only made it a reel…it’s always so hard to know which ones I should turn into long form content!!!
Thank you,
Wow! 🥰❤️
Thank you!!!

@@MarianneVanderDussen Thank you so much. I didn't know that there's a canvas panel.
Lovely painting👌
Is it possible to paint this scene or a brighter spring field scene using acrylic paint with water as the medium.....as in watercolour painting....i m sure it wud be awesome.

Thanks for the advice.
youe way of explaing iis godly
Thank you so much!

Is 210 GSM paper suitable for acrylic painting?
Yep! That should work! You might still get a bit of buckling but it helps if you tape the edges down.
Feel free to let me know what sketchbook subjects you'd like to see covered on this channel! I'm in LOVE with sketchbooks and itching to do more, so hit me with your suggestions 🖤
Hi Marianne, what do you do about the sandy very raw surface the gesso leaves after drying? I find it the extreme opposite of smooth. Thanks Sabine

Which sketch book did you use 🥰
Hi there, I'm using the Strathmore watercolor book, which you can find here: amzn.to/41JeNnd or you can use the Stillman & Birn Zeta series (which I like because of the hot press paper): amzn.to/3NF6L9b
These are affiliate links, but I absolutely stand behind the quality of these products.
I am going to use a mixed media sketchbook soon for my acrylics. Are the pages stick together? How to avoid this? Thank you 😊
My pages don't really stick together!

@@chriswhitehouse8982 awesome! It’s probably doable with just gesso too, I was taught to use shellac so that’s just what I do but I’d love to hear your results if you use gesso! I’m going to be doing an acrylic ink tone on my pages before I start, which probably wouldn’t work terribly well on gesso, but I imagine I’ll start another sketchbook with just pure oil paintings in the future so I’d love to hear if you try it and it works.
