“Open source eco-village design has the potential to launch a new paradigm of individual and large-scale DIY-sustainable living. One Community is focused on building the first large-scale open source, 100% replicable, teacher/demonstration hub dedicated to this. Our 100% volunteer team is developing the plans necessary for food, energy, housing, education, for-profit and non-profit economic design, social architecture, fulfilled living, global stewardship practices, and more. This is the June 7th, 2020 edition (#376) of our weekly progress update detailing our team’s development and accomplishments.”

What I am interested in is the economics of change. We need to be running the recycling at the dumpster/skip level. Running the companies that haul the waste away and get paid for doing so and get the pick of all the best materials.
Not sure if we're thinking on the same level as you here, but we've got researchers working on community-level recycling models for nonprofits and businesses covering clothing, glass, styrofoam, plastic, and non-recyclables. @@onecommunityorg Thanks for that! We are looking at projects in Portugal and UK at the moment! Passive House standard would be a pre requisite and Energy, Water and Waste "off grid". Water here is a special concern though we have ample Solar!

@@onecommunityorg Hi again! I was thinking that water can be used to insulate buildings whilst also guarding supplied in dry areas? Have you thought of making Dividing walls. floors and ceilings out of metal tanks? I would see a large square building. 3 stories that encloses a large land area that would be used for intensive growing. There would be a giant sloping roof made just of Solar Panels covering the whole structure and on top of the buildings would be large water storage (up to 2 meters high) fed from rainfall from the giant roof covering. Do you have access to Cad drawing that could visualize this??

I like this, but I have to say it has a bit too much 'positive thinking televangelist' energy to it, for me. I am interested in how you plan for failure (large plans always fail somewhere), iterating on designs, and how organizational/governing/planning structures aim to integrate learned lessons. Maybe there's a video that goes into that?
You seem to make the same video contentless every week and call that a progress report. I'm sure the volunteer work done is fine, but this way of spreading this idea is not very convincing, it just makes your channel look like those timeshare real estate scams. If you are proud of the work your volunteers do, invite them to speak on the channel, let them tell us about their sources of information and their iterative process. Making youtube videos is not supposed to be your weekly positivity affirmation exercize.
@@PeterDevore We used to share the team's work in these updates, the feedback was that they were boring and too long. So now we only share the team's work every week in the written blogs.

Isn't using shipping containers a bad design? Kind of makes me worry about the other designs if they aren't all just things that look good on paper but would be disasters if implemented in real life. The problem with shipping containers is that once you start cutting into them they lose their structural strength. Then you have to add a bunch of reinforcement in which case you defeated the purpose of using shipping containers.

ja, creating "a model" in a "virtual world" but where are the examples of eco-villages that have been constructed in the real physical world?
If you'd like to see the best existing physical examples of what we're creating tutorials for, visit the resources section of our website for whatever component you are interested in. We continue to develop those resource sections as we're researching and finishing each component's tutorials.

Those pages are how we keep track of the best we're aware of in the world so far. In some cases, there are existing plans and tutorials for replication but none comprehensive enough that we could use them to finish what we're still developing... so filling in the blanks is what's needed and where our energy is focused on daily.
We won't build until we have a complete set of step-by-step instructions and approved engineering plans. Throughout the building/testing process, we'll further document everything. This will include fixing and/or improving any parts of the documentation that we find weren't clear or complete and adding what we learn that we didn't know we needed to learn (or it would have already been included). We'll also be adding video tutorials for all the steps and specifics that would benefit from them.
