Be careful to whatever track youre going to, they will throw you out without having a cage in your car. NHRA and IHRA rules say anything faster than 11.49 you have to have a cage installed in your car. And the faster you get, the more points and bars you have to add.
On a car like this you basically have to go custom cage. They don't make one to maintain your rear seats. I wouldn't have a civic this nice without keeping rear seats, ac, and a few other niceities.
Try buying new bushings for your shift linkages, make sure everything is nice and tight. I got a feeling its not your shifter but linkages as I have the same one but used new linkages and it's awesome. Air oil seperator is the best of all options on turbo cars.

Get the jackspania racing b series box shifter it has options for lockout for reverse and 5th as well as 1st and 2nd so you can’t misshift as well as mounting to trans tunnel so you don’t need a stabilizer bar for shift linkage feels amazing

Yo John you babe a little plastic ring inside the shifter if it is worn out it won’t center the shifter when you get out of gear, I have the same shifter replace that plastic ring and you should be good.

I think the drainback issue comes from people that live in cold climates and dont have their tubes routed good to prevent condensation, and winter brings them the water/oil nasty shit in their reservoirs.. so they think that going back would be bad.. probably would. lol

I have the same steering wheel with an nrg quick release. It spaces it from the light stalks pretty much exactly like the oem steering wheel.
