The Caran d'Ache palette is a great gift that isn't expensive but so useful especially with those Neo II crayons or watercolor pencils, or even watercolor markers.
I love all of your suggestions. I would recommend some nice brushes. I love Silver Black velvet and the Princeton Neptune lines. Both brands offer regular brushes individually and in sets. They also offer their beautiful brushes in travel sets where the brushes pull apart and nestle into the handle. It is so nice to use your favorite brushes on the go. For water brushes, that have water in the handle, my favorite are the Derwent brand. They also can be bought in a set. ❤ Happy painting everyone!
Great video. RUclips keeps deleting my art supply suggestion so I am going to try this one more time. I love the HG Art Concepts Painters Colour Diary for paint swatching. 140 lb 100% cotton paper swatch book holding 350 swatches with glassine sheets in between pages so the pages won’t stick together. i think RUclips is deleting this because I say where to find it so I am going to say think of the place whose packages have a big smile on them when delivered. Think Prime day. . Have a good week.
😂😂😂 I loved your “clues”. I don’t know why RUclips was deleting your comment! But I’m glad you found a way round it, thank you for sharing Anita P.S. Amazon 💛 for anyone wondering lol x
Gifting art supplies to someone? My suggestion would be: 4 pieces 8”by 10” watercolor paper; 2 brushes Small and medium, 3 tubes paint primary, and 3 tubes secondary, simple instruction sheet, and two drawing pencils. A small but affordable taste of watercolor. Wrapped up and bowed! 22:3022:30
Great video. Thanks. Lots of great ideas and suggestions. I think you covered it all pretty good. In addition to the technique and tutorial type videos, I just love this type of video. My suggestion for gift ideas would be a good quality watercolor brush or brush set. I put nice brushes in my wish lists but usually never feel that I can justify spending that much on a brush, so getting one as a gift, as I have this Christmas from my other half, is just a wonderful feeling. Good quality paper is another idea. Storage solutions would be another good one and you covered that pretty well in one of your recent videos. Everyday studio supplies are always good - rulers , drawing pencils, erasers - like the Tombow Mono Zero or kneadable etc., tape, brush holders and pencil cases. Nice pencils, like Caron d’ache or Derwent Inktense. I got back into art, specifically watercolor, a little less than a year ago after being away from it for way too many years. I cleaned out a cupboard and came upon a set of watercolor paints (Grumbacher Academy) that my mother had bought for me for Christmas about 55 years ago. The tubes were, of course, all dried up, but wow, didn’t that bring back some wonderful memories. It was a very special gift. I think that you made mention in one of your videos about something special your mom gave you?? Hope I’ve got that right. It made me smile and think of those Grumbacher paints. It was that long ago Christmas gift that got me back into art and watercolor. I bought some paint and now I just can’t seem to stop myself, LOL. Thanks again for another enjoyable video.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing SnowPony! Your list of suggestions are great and I’m glad that you’ve got the good quality paint brushes! You heard correctly, my mum bought me the set of kuretake watercolours and they mean the world to me ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for watching and your lovely message! I hope that you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas and that you continue to enjoy your love of watercolour with the same excitement you had when receiving that special set 55 years ago ❤️❤️❤️
I would recommend a subscription or gift card to a local art studio that offers classes. While I’m appreciative of tangible objects as gifts from family and friends, I know that it can be overwhelming to go into the art supply store and pick something out.
Great suggestions! Neocolor II's are THE classic but I also like Derwent drawing pencils. They have a 5 or 6 pencil set in a tin that has a nice range of neutral colors with such a great texture for sketching.
Such a lovely inspirational selection of supplies! I love my Kuretake watercolours but aspire to having the wooden box of sennelier watercolours! The brass palette is a thing of beauty! 😊
Thank you for sharing your recommendations. I also adore the Etchr sketchbook, they are such a pleasure to work with. I only recently came back into the creative world (child obsessed with drawing and creating but unfortunately stopped in school due to stress and burnout.) Your videos have served as a big inspiration for me. July 2023, I successfully completed a sketchbook in full for the first time in my life using the everyday sketchbook by Etchr. I can't even emphasise how important that felt for me. OMG, the major brushes brand making you almost quit painting is so relatable haha. I'm sure we used that exact brand in secondary school. So, combining those paints with bad-quality paper was just a recipe for disaster. It convinced my younger poor self that I was just too stupid to understand how to paint :( higher quality products really do make a difference with some mediums.
Dr. Sketches, you know how I feel about the Koval sketchbooks, I put them on par with the Etchr Perfect Signature (they use the same paper - Fabriano Artistico) and they come in different sizes and some even come with Arches or Saunders Waterford paper. I mention them because while I love love love the Etchr Signature, it's always only a limited edition, whereas the Koval Pro Sketcher is offered all the time (though my favorite of them all is the hot press landscape Pro Sketcher that uses Fabriano 5 paper).
😂😂 I’d expect nothing less from you ❤️ the day I try Koval (once I’ve made a dent in my triple digit sketchbook collection) it’ll be because of your recommendation x x
These are all great suggestions! I have half of these and kind of want the other half lol. Travel brush sets are a good idea- they're usually more expensive than normal brushes so i remember it took a long time for me to buy some and i love them so much 😊
I really need to try the Etchr sketch books! I would also recommend the Artgraf tailor shapes sets. They look so good in the cork trays and are so much fun to paint with.
I was fortunate enough to receive a large sum of money a few years ago allowing me to purchase the entire set of neocolor 2 crayons only to discover that you cannot use other mediums on top of them once dry as they are made of wax so as wonderful as they are to use the tin still looks brand new as the day I opened them. I have tried to use them as accents to other mediums or as the last step but they are quite thicker then a pencil crayon so I just like to open them, run my hands along the crayons and then stick them back on the shelf again.
That’s the same set I have my eye on lol I use them as final steps/ touch ups too. What mediums do you usually use? I do find that most things won’t layer on top of them in the dry state but you can layer once you’ve dissolved them with water and it’s dried 💛 I hope that you find a way to use them that sparks the same level of inspiration as when you bought them those years ago 💛💛💛 thanks for sharing x
So many art supplies that it's hard to not want all of them, especially the ones that are not very renowned are getting very nice color pallet. Thank you for upload , pretty hair lady 😊😊
I love Davinci watercolor and they have some wonderful curated palettes. Such fun colors! A nice Kolinsky brush size 6 or 8 could also be a special gift
Great recommendations. I love the Betty Hayways watercolour brushes from the Chelsea Paper Company, saw a few RUclipsrs recommending them and wasn’t disappointed.
Haha… always enjoy outtakes 😂😂. Great gift ideas, I agree with them ALL as I already have (and immensely enjoy) a lot of the products you mentioned! I love the idea of those colour cubes and have considered them SO many times, but I don’t really have a spot to store them (where they’d be easily accessible and get used). Someday, if I redesign my painting space and perhaps get rid of other craft supplies, I’ll be able to pick up a set. Some other gift ideas… 1) I ordered a wooden brush rest from Etsy a few years back and I love having a place to lie my brushes down while they’re drying, or to keep them flat and ready to use when I’m working on a project with multiple brushes. 2) I also think that a gift card to your loved one’s favourite online or local art store is a FAB gift. Give them the gift of choice and let them buy something they’ve wanted for a while. 3) Following along the Etchr gift ideas, if they like to paint on the go, I think the Etchr Field case is fabulous for taking a small selection of supplies with you (and more reasonably priced than the Etchr Slate mini… which I also use a lot 😊).
Follow up- I have the signature series Etchr sketchbook from 2021 in cold press and just got a hot press one this week. I was very disappointed to see they cut the number of pages down from 52 to 44. So they basically eliminated 8 pages and charge $74.99 vs $75.00 from 2 years ago. They are beautiful sketchbooks, granted, but really for the price they should not skimp on paper which they most likely get bulk prices on. Did they think we wouldn't notice? Love your videos BTW. I always watch them to the end!
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words! I must admit I was also disappointed that there are less pages - my assumption is that they did this to remove the watermarked pages that some artists didn't like; but I miss the missing 8 pages lol x x
Artemiranda has a lovely enamelled white heavy weight palette, two versions, with a removable insert for less than 20 quid, perfect for assembling a personalised collection of watercolours, it looks to have nice sized wells, it is unusual and practical, check it out in their palette section. I would be delighted to own one, so it may well be my pressie to me!
I love this list! however I wouldn't have it in me to use the limited edition sketchbook (it's like getting into a super hot relationship but you know it's short term) or the brass palette lol
Thank you Sandra! It is open to everyone ( I just completely forgot to link it lool) It is available here: ko-fi.com/s/e289ae5fda Hope you enjoy painting with gouache! xx

Hey Ann! I have tried them a few times - they are okay. They are beautiful colours but have quite a drying shift and dull down a bit when dry.
