"In the Pines (Oakland)" is a docu-narrative born from the direct impact gun violence has on black women. Music, fiction and reality are folded together in a visual piece that blurs reality and scripted drama to capture a mother's emotional spiral after her son is gunned down by law enforcement.

Wow!! Words do express the power. I’m a high school teacher taking a lunch break between classes, I was playing music while I ate. And, now I find myself sobbing into my lunch. Thank you for this.
I'm white, and don't have these same issues in my life. I can't and won't pretend to know how black people feel.
But I wil tell you this- This song grabbed me by the soul and made me cry, and was almost unbearably real through the prayer.
When I pick up my guitar again, I will have that much more depth to draw from.

Today I saw two young black men in Oakland, who videotaped themselves grabbing an old black muslim womans' luggage, and drove off, destroying her cart, and dragging her meager personal possessions away down the street. She ran after the car in vain, while they laughed.
What drives people to be mean to the defenseless?
Hard to answer for that at the Judgement.
In a world of insanity, I pray for reason, forgiveness, and peace.

This made me cry because I have an eleven year old boy and I don't know how I would go through this. I am so glad that they put in giving it to the Lord because that is all I could do. I pray God comforts and helps all those that have a lost a child.

What can I say, Xavier? This video moves my soul and cries out against the injustice of nonsensical violence against people of all ethnicities regardless of where we live or our circumstances. I own The Last Days of Oakland and while In The Pines stirs my soul, this video slams it home. Thank you for such a profound message that everyone needs to hear.
BTW, I'm an internet radio station hobbyist and The Last Days of Oakland is a mainstay in my playlist. And everyone I've turned your music on to has gone out and purchased a copy. Or at least those that I'm aware of. Just thought you should know.

The version I listened to the most is about the sexual exploitation of a woman, yet there are many other darker versions. There's been over 160 variations since 1926. It is chilling no matter which version. The reference to his dead brother is devastating. It adds gravity to the message.
