Sylvia being a foot unit there to help other foot units keep up is probably my favorite point against the "Horsey Emblem" argument.
Still though, those hidden items in FE4 are so hidden that I can't even call them easter eggs. I can't think of any way that someone would stumble on them without knowing about them, no matter how many times they play the game. I prefer to call them guidebook bait, there to get people to call that Nintendo Info Hotline for the sexiest cheats at 1000 yen a minute!

People just don't know how hard it is to hear it when in other games, the main mission is too hidden to be founs without a guide in Castlevania 2 (NES).
Also, i think you can call these hidden item as DLC from that time, since you have to pay to be able to get them.

You do realize the primary reason for sylvia getting the leg ring is that it makes her basically mounted, maintaining horse emblem, right?
I don't think that this reasoning holds up to scrutiny. How would a player know that these items exists and feel the need to call a hotline if they weren't already told by an outside source? If you never saw that these items existed online and people didn't get annoyed at them being hidden, would you ever be annoyed by not finding them?
@@Rengor1997 that requires a lot of investment to do. Giving the leg ring to sigurd in chapter 5 so that seliph can reach chapter 7 shannan in reasonable amount of turns means that taking the time to a amass 80000 gold for your dancer isnt really the best option for most of the game. Though i wouldnt use that as an example because spoilers.
Genealogy has Tailtiu and Tini. Objectively best FE game tied with Sacred Stones for having L'Arachel and Selena.
But Selena is not an asset. It is a flaw.

The first time I played this game I did it like any other Fire Emblem title. I had fun but didn't understand why everyone praised this game THAT much. Then I tried a ranked run. Using all the units available as much as possible and micromanaging gold and equipment between units made me appreciate the game so much more.

It's my first time playing FE 4, and I'm playing relatively blind. I watched up to chapter 1 of Mangs and Mekkah's playthrough. I am currently on chapter 7, and I can easily say this is by far one of the best fire emblem games I have ever played. My ONLY gripe with the game thus far is villages that give items or stat boosts. Because of how the pawnshop system works, it can be somewhat annoying to get a useful item that the unit can not use at all from a village only to have to sell it and buy it back for double the price. I think if there was a way to differentiate between the three village types (items, Stat boosts, Gold only) then my issue with it would be a lot less pronounced.
If they remake this game (and I basically feel like Three Houses is basically setting us up for that) I just want to be able to skip enemy phase and speed up movement.
Probably the Kaga game with the most mechanic explanation in-game is Berwick saga, he just couldn't let it slide with this one.

Yes, some units are better than others at fighting. Sigurd is better than Arden, for example. But that's what makes it kinda funny. To have one guy overpower everything. Besides, if you train them to promotion, they start to get pretty good

The holy weapons are typically heavier than normal weapons. That's kinda their weakness. Even though 50% give enough speed to counter that.

I'll be honest, I played and finished FE4 recently, and I would never play it ever again.
I did enjoy the game, but there were also a lot of parts that just made me want to turn it off and not play it again (cough spirit forest cough). Really loved this video though, your editing is top notch.
I now play FE4 everyday and it's my favourite game ever this comment aged poorly.

While I love this video in more ways than I can admit, I do have a complaint: your points were well argued, but this game ultimately isn't without some major flaws. While the game does do a great job of integrating story into gameplay, it ultimately does restrict options in a first playthrough scenario, where the game is still unfamiliar and hard. The non-holy blood characters are so underpowered, it feels almost like suicide to use them if you find the game hard. Fire Emblem, to me at least, has first and foremost been about the characters. The player chooses who to make strong, who to let die, and in Genealogy's case, who to marry. It feels kinda like a kick in the nuts that a large portion of the roster has such an uphill battle, that new players who like the character may still be dissuaded from using them. I think the best way to fix this, in the event of a remake, is to give the non-holy blooded characters a bonus personal skill. It actually not only maintains gameplay/story integration, but it enhances it by implying that non-holy blooders have to be more skilled to join the ranks of Sigurd's Army.
But if Arden was too good, he wouldn't be a meme. 😏
Jokes aside, that argument is no different to characters that aren't the best compared to another in other FE games in the series.
Just because they're not the best, doesn't mean you're obligated to not use them.
FE4 (as Chaz stated) lets you deploy everyone, where everyone gets a chance to shine.
Hell, if you like Arden for example, then you attempt to give him the majority of the rings. The rings and weapons with additional effects makes it possible to make the worst unit in your army to be an absolute beast.
You as the strategist of course have to plan these out as you play.
Besides, if it doesn't work out the first time, you could always replay the game when you have more knowledge of the mechanics.
Honestly the difficulty and the new mechanics and being able to deploy and use almost every unit everytime gives it even more replaiblity. After your first run you'll naturally want to see what other characters can do and grow into or evolve or even as a added challenge to yourself.
The thing is the gap between bad and good character is really just that vast especially in Gen 2. There are character imbalances and then there is character uselessness. Characters do start fairly useful for the first 3 maps of the game though as Sigurd does need support and outside Sigurd the only other character that is abnormally strong right out the gate is Quan who is handicapped with lack of double attacking so your whole army besides the Armored guy in the wrong game gets use. However once Holy Blood gets enough levels to start working things change as the stat differences add up fast. However the real killer is when Levin and Sigurd get their holy weapons and the massive bonuses make them army killers making a lot of the last map of Gen 1 throwing them at any major problem. Gen 2 it gets worse since they throw out holy weapons like candy at Halloween getting your first one 2 chapters in Gen 2. By a certain point using non-holy weapon users becomes a needless liability. It's part of the reason why my enjoyment of Gen 2 goes down after about 2-3 chapters in because the game becomes more and more trivialized and actual stragety or tactics go out the window. Character imbalances cause gameplay imbalances and gameplay imbalances can make a game boring which is what holy weapons and their overly stat and skilled end up doing. It is why Genology of Warfare is always going be a overrated game to me. Now Thracia 776 is where it's at.
Edit: Genology still a really god game though but I feel people really dimiss it flaws and put it on a pedestal.
@@boredomkiller9985 I can see why that's the case, however in the second gen there's no guarantee that you'd get favorable pairings or the player only wants to use the substitutes.
Thus the enemies in Gen 2 are at a level where its possible to beat with a variety of different means of play.
Unfortunately, because of this, second gen becomes almost a cakewalk with a non substitute run.
I agree with Thracia 776 though. It may have a few problems, but it's a dream for those that want a challenge, and I like a challenge.

Yeah, having every unit balanced detracts from the experience, since everyone feels the same. I feel like this happens in the lategame of most FE games (5, 7, 8, 13 etc.), but not in FE4.
My only problem is the brave axe. I think it's on the cusp of being too good/useful to be hidden.
When I saw the enemy blobs actually moving in formations I knew this was the game for me. I played alot of the newer ones like the radiant games, awakening, etc but this one is really my favorite I just wish there were more games in the franchise built like 4.

I agree with you with all the balance thing, not only in this one but in every other FE. Imagine if manakete were as weak as a thief, or if the black Knight was just an average general, the story would not make sense.
Also theres nothing like discovering a monster hidden in a supposedly weak unit. If all were more or less the same, wheres the fun in that?

Oof, i just finished FE4 last week, too late choopi.
FE4 is like FE6 to me, really rough start, the games hardest and longest chapters are in the first few (or in my case hundred) hours which paints an awful picture. If Ch 2 didn't have killer music I probably would've quit.
The argument about the manual is such a good point that everyone forgets about. This is a Japanese SNES game that we only have a digital only translation.
I agree with the hidden items, except for the hero axe. Lex (and by extension Johalva/Jahalvier) needs the hero axe to contribute in a meaningful enough way. It should've swapped places with the hero sword imo.
Unit balance... Radiant Dawn is my favourite FE, nuff said. FE4 even intergrates balance into the story -also machine gun jamke has no holy blood so every argument is invalid-
Giant maps.. i love how you can connect all the maps to form judgral but man foot units really get screwed. I also find it hilarious comparing some sections of FE5's maps to the thracia maps of FE4. arden doesn't have 5 mov, he has 500. Man can run across Judgral in a short few years in heavy armour.

Wait, doesn't horses dominate nearly every single FE game? Because even on smaller maps they still have a much easier time reaching objectives than the footlocked people.
JP do Ó honestly it's not a problem with geniology, but with horse emblem in general mounted units are too good
Mounts being too dominant makes more of a difference with larger maps, because for each turn you spend moving across the map, the gap between mounted and unmounted units gets much much bigger. If a map is 30 tiles across, then an unmounted unit with 6 move will take 5 turns to get across it whereas a mounted unit with 8 move will take 4 turns, so they’re only 1 turn behind. If we quadruple the map size to 120 tiles, then the mounted units take 15 turns, whereas the unmounted units will take 20, leaving them 5 turns behind: by the time they catch up, combat will likely be over and they won’t get an opportunity to gain xp or loot, nor will they provide any value to you, the player.
Hmm. It’s almost like a lot of these points are up to personal preference. Specifically, they aren’t objectively good or bad but it is up to you whether or not you like the mechanics or the design

This was really well edited, and was a really interesting take against those arguments! 😄
Genealogy is a game that asks things from players that we don't really have today. Like patience, resilience, and a want to actually have gameplay and story to be intertwined. Genealogy is a game that I feel is enjoyed as a package more than perhaps any game I've played. It has a little something for everyone. However, unlike most games that you say that about where certain people enjoy certain pieces of content, Genealogy offers everything in one complete package. It's not like other games where some people skip through the story and only care about gameplay and others only play for the story and can't be bothered with the gameplay. In Genealogy, the gameplay is the story, it's not chopped up into pieces where you complete a map and see some cutscene and then you go back to your camp to prepare and maybe take on some side missions in between the main story. In Genealogy you experience all of that at once on this huge, mega map where instead of awkwardly breaking up the game into a bunch of seperate pieces, which totally breaks the immersion imo, we can just have the camp, the cutscenes, the side stories, the main story, and everything else (except a few scenes in between maps) all in same place. Modern games tend to seperate the gameplay, story and every other aspect of the game into its own pieces. It's a problem I have with most games in general that has a story. I love that Genealogy makes the story a part of gameplay to the extent that it does. It doesn't care about balancing that much and just focuses on what would make sense for a character to do. Would a decendant of a legendary crusader weilding a holy weapon be more powerful than some little kid that steals things? Obviously, and you feel that in the gameplay. But there's also another aspect to that, which is that while some kid that steals things might be weak when we meet him, he can be trained and become an incredibly powerful unit. Any character can be used if you just train the correctly. All in all, this 25 year old game where you can count the pixels on a characters face, is somehow more immersive than games that actually look like real life.

I'm happy to say that I've finally decided to give Geneology a chance recently, and I'm really enjoying it so far! The only reason I was against it for so long was a part of the plot that didn't sit well with me(not the bbq, I'm ok with that). I can really see why you like it so much. Looking forward to finishing it, then on to Thracia 776!
Everybody talks about editing. No one gonna talk about his acting?
How would I fix genealogy? Firstly all units can reorder weapons after battle, no not the knight ring. Just like a third of what Canto is. Next married units can rescue eachother like in other games. Only married units though so pairings have another level of complexity however I think parents growths should maybe not affect the children as much so for new players who don't know about the second gen their pairings might be ok. No this wouldn't make all pairings good just a bit better. Lastly and this one isn't necessary but giving all units Pursuit however units that previously had said skill get a new overpowered skill so this isn't balancing the game as much as it's just adding another layer. I like trading in this game and I like the maps. Also maybe reclassing so more units get Holy weapons but that likely isn't necessary.

And it's important to play blind. I played FE 4 knowing about Lex's Brave Axe and it's become impossible to me to not pick this weapon in future runs.
Number 3 and 1: Genealogy of the Holy War without these "problems" isn't Geneaolgy. What make Genealogy a UNIQUE game are the different mechanics.
Geneaolgy without pawnshop and big maps isn't Genealogy.
FE4 big maps are very imersive, I love how the game connects every chapter.
Number 2: ... that person really played FE? Every FE game has great units and shit units.

The problem I have is that I'm too used to the quality of life changes of later Fire Emblem titles. In the GBA games I'd only have to calculate damage for units that mine couldn't attack, but in fe4 I need to do it for each combat (though atk and def is displayed). I like to play carefully, so it takes me forever to do the math when there are a lot of enemies around. Essentially I need to do more math, and math can get pretty tedious.
