The rings are stuck to the pistons. Keep making it run. When it gets hot, it will loosen up and run better.
You are totally right. Derek would be driving this thing around the backroads in the same amount of time (no brakes, of course).
⁰p]]
yep not valves oil in pistons means stuck rings if they socked rings with atf over a few days it start and run
@@T0RP depends on if he uses a left handed cressent wrench.
Replace one quart of oil with a quart of ATF... Works on stuck rings and collapsed lifters equally well..
THANK YOU! I recently started two of my dads snowmobiles that were sitting for 7 and 9 years in the grass. He told me dont bother they will never run but after watching all of your videos I had confidence and was able to get them both started within an hour and a half. One needed a carb rebuild and oil down the cylinder to lubricate, and the other needed oil to gain compression to and new spark plugs to fire. These were 1990 snomobiles which is not too different than the 1980's cars you work on. Thank you for what you do cause it helps to revive not only just old cars!
I find that super cool. 👌
Maybe 17 years ago I discovered an old push mower behind the neighbors shop. I asked about it and he said it had probably been there a decade and didn't mind me taking it. The gas tank had algae growing in it, water in the oil, all the paint rusted off. I took it apart, cleaned the carb, fuel tank, and pull rope mechanism. Changed the oil and spark plug. Sanded the magneto and gapped it with a business card. Filled the tank and it fired right up after a few pulls. I had worked on bicycles before this but at that very moment I knew I was hooked. At this point in time I feel the same way. If there isn't a mechanical issue that was from another person in the past then I can make it run. Anything with a carburetor will always come back to life fairly easily.
Haha I just realized this comment is 3 years old.
Sometimes a dry motor needs oil for compression. A mix of two stroke oil in gas might be a good idea, with plenty of oil.
Those were my thoughts exactly. If it needs oil to run, then let it run on oil. 2 stroke oil to the rescue.
There's no way 2 stroke is saving this engine haha maybe if it was 80+ psi per cylinder dry but not 60 psi across the board.
A dry cylinder will not have the suction to pull fuel in it , squirt oil in every cylinder and even the compression will come up. Had save problem with a ovh cam 6 and it started right up
@@Aidan.17 he got the cylinders to around 90 after taking the slop out of the chain and aligning the timing
I am sure that Lemans (especially in that dark green color) was a stunner when it was new and sitting in the showroom! Hopefully, it’s owner follows through with a rebuild and it doesn’t just sit there and deteriorate! Now, get the Rambler started!
🤣"those meddling kids!"🤣🤣 I love mook!! She's hilarious!!
She is indeed a treasure.. Kevin's a lucky fella!😉🤙🍻

Been doin' this "Bring 'em back alive" thing for about 45 years. My rescue truck is a 1952 Studebaker 2R17-A 3 ton. It was originally an airport fuel truck and has 37,000 original miles. I bought it cab and chassis. It now has a service bed from a mobile tire service truck. Lift gate, generator, air compressor and more tool boxes than you could ask for. It's pretty slow with a 245 cu.in. 6cyl. and a 4+2. It will cruise 50-55. Best thing is I seldom have to go back home for a tool I forgot. Lot's of low mileage grain trucks around Iowa. Give it a thought. The journey is half the fun.
Kevin and Mook, great combo of education and fun, and your pace of action in your vids. Keep up the good work.
Check with copart auctions. They seem to have the concession for retired AT&T service trucks.
Ya ideally a truck with hail damage but it still runs ok so it goes for nothing
You gonna completely restore this bad boy? Would be a solid Pontiac to add to the gargantuan fleet you seem to be forming lmao
He's working on it for someone else as he stated in the video. He just wanted to see it run again, which it did momentarily but it needs a full rebuild.
@@toysoldier46552 ahhhh must have been said while I was making lunch lmao

I would love to see the rebuild or something like this from start to finish. You're a great host, super knowledgeable!
He doesn't seem to wanna ever rebuild a motor. He is the carb and brake guy.
I'd like to see the Rambler sitting next to the Pontiac up and running again.
Female here, love your videos. Easy to understand and follow. Your very detailed! Deff gonna follow you for more videos!
Apparently, deaf females can still comment on the RUclips videos... 👎
When an episode starts off with mook, it's a like for sure
You have come a long way with engine knowledge since I first started watching. I look forward to seeing your videos. Rebuild that engine! Keep her numbers. Bring someone in if you have to, You have already earned that man's trust to bring that car back.
I liked: Mook’s joke on the “noodle” timing chain, your gracious and thoughtful show of the abandoned farm, the northern Iowa sunset and the actual surgery for replac9ng the timing chain.
Mook: "Those meddling kids! Nothing a hammer won't fix!" lol! She kills me!
Never assume they put the wires on correctly
Oops!
That was my first thought.
As soon as he showed the cap I was like that ain’t right
Well I just checked and he has the correct order. Or at least #1 is correct. I would not assume the parts installed were done correctly of even maybe bad from the factory.
@@bullzeyez3236 Pontiac V8 Firing order it is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 with a counterclockwise distributor rotation.
Enjoyed the show. No bent valves, its NOT a self destruct engine. Cool you got it running for a second.
Yes and compression would be ZERO not 60-90 psi. I'd have compression checked with all the plugs removed.
Kevin's treasure trove of revival videos is amazing. The fact that you can refer to any older video to get the help and experience you need. Dude is a walking encyclopedia for cars!
You have a torch, Kevin! Good tip on the main seal alignment! Also grease the seals and the fuel pump eccentric. Do the timing cover BOLTS go into a water jacket? RTV them.
Dude, this has got to be the best tutorial for finding TDC I've ever seen, as well as setting an distributors initial timing. I've struggled with this for years, and the way that you just described it made it finally click in my head.
Really you struggled with finding TDC for years ? Damn you need to stick to what you know best if finding TDC is that hard because it's so simple but that's why everyone is not a auto mechanic
agreed, it's apparent Kevin wants the channel to be more than just "hey we revived another car today". It's instructional, and I've learned a lot of general troubleshooting frameworks because of him taking the time to explain his thought process.
79tazman well if you don't try you won't learn. (The mechanics didn't know before someone teached them)
I also find this to be a little complicated sometimes (I rarely does it) so this information was really good
Same here
Thanks for all the great education! One of the things that I love about you guys is that you explain everything! It's educational and entertaining. That's a beautiful car, it's a shame that the folks involved won't let you love on it in a series or something...on to the next project!
Always good to see Daddy Digs working on the cars. Would like to see him do another paint restoration.
I picked up a 1972 Pontiac Lemans in 1977, the same color, 3200 miles on it. I still own it and it still runs. The body is not as good as the one that you worked on. When you turned it over, it sounds the same as mine, the same wine. I have done some work on it over the years. Transmission and a engine rebuild. When the engine, rebuilt, the builder put a GM timing chain in it and I had to fix that when I got it home. There is a difference between a Gm and Pontiac timing chain. With the change of gas, I replaced the heads. Replaced the heater core 2 times, and last year rebuilt the steering gear. When I had the heater core out, everything worked, but very little heat in the car. I need to take the driverside fender off to get the mouse nest cleaned out. It is still a joy to drive, and when I retire I will be working on the body and changing out the distributor, like the one you were working on, and I'm going to put fuel injection on it. I have always had carb problems. I'm from North Dakota, but I went to college in Iowa and I bought the Lemans in Iowa. Fun video, Thanks
I want that nash more than the lemans for some reason lol
This isn't against your personal integrity sir,... but wtf is wrong with you???🤣🤣🤣

"Those Meddling Kids!"- Gotta love the Mook comments!!
When you moved the camshaft after pulling the timing chain, it moved the rotor’s point towards #1, you’d have to go back and repeat that part.
Absolutely sometimes I wonder! But he’s young he will pick up on all that with time hopefully. And he thinks there’s bent valves but between the timing being off and the rings being stuck inside the pistons there’s no compression! I still can’t figure out why he doesn’t use a timing light he really should be using one I don’t understand this setting of timing by licking your finger and sticking in the air to see which way the wind is blowing to find timing lol ok not quite that bad but honestly if you’re going to do it do it right
True
Hey there all. Enjoyed watching. I had to back track a little to the Olds from 3 months ago. I was impressed with how much work you put into it before going back to Iowa. A lot of good data shared on the cutlass. Watched you on the Pontiac... Ah the good old days!!
My first car was a 71 Lemans 4 door with a 2 barrel 350. I bought it for $99. I wish I still had it.
Been waiting for a new upload, glad to see mook helping ya out!!
I love when you run into a problem you stop and explain what going on . Love your vids! ...oh and Mook is really funny!
Hahahahahahahaha, loved it when you opened the barn door and Mook was inside lol
It is a non-interference motor so you are all set. The valves are fine.
Ya ya would think he would know that
So glad the engine in my car is on interference never have to be scared about bend valves
Thank you for uploading on a Sunday!
I appreciated how you took the time, slowed it down and thoroughly explained what you was doing in the beginning. This very reason is why I have been a “Watch Wes Work” RUclips subscriber for a longtime. I think I’ll stick around here for a while as well.
Even in not reaching the ultimate goal, there's so much to learn in this video. Thanks for producing these.
There’s your next series. Building out a revival rig.
Or rebuilding that minty green thing next to the Pontiac
I remember my dad having a Pontiac Le Mans when I was a kid.. Only took me out in it once but I've always remembered it.
Love the revival videos, huge props for giving your mates channels a shout out every video too
I think that this serves as an important lesson for anyone taking on their first revival. Don’t expect to always be able to fix an engine. Sometimes, even when you can fix it, i doesn’t make financial sense, and it’s best to know when to draw the line. Good effort guys!
Caught that bonding moment between Mook and your Dad when you were blowing that hose 😉
Hey, when are we going to see some more of the Cutlass? Really liked that, as well as the Offroad Adventure with your friends.
That's his Dad's whip Now 😂
Borrow dads Cutty. It's what got me to subscribe. The Lemans was nice little teaser. I would love to see more GM A body cars on the channel

Great video Kevin!! Would love to see a full restoration on that one if the owner could go for it. Say thank you to Mook for helping out!!

Yeah I can’t stop thinking about that Nash
Thanks for this video and all the links to the various other videos I did my first revival thanks to you, mook, thunderhead, and Dylan’s direction keep it up brother
That brings back some memories . I had a 71 4 door Lemans . 350 and power glide . It was a good beater , never had much power . Moms 76 slant 6 would blow it's doors off . Thanks for the memories .
Mook's must be native to the Midwest haven't been able to find me one up here in the Northeast🤣
Good to see Mook....
Good, honest and solid effort, mate. How she kicked at all when that cam gear was so far out of whack is just incredible! After the new chain and getting it to actually fire and run, I was hoping the engine might come to the party and a miracle happen, but it wasn't to be. Loved the sound of the starter though - can't beat an old school starter for making even the smallest sound feel like something special. Hope you get the chance to rebuild the ol' Mean Greeny. I'd love to see that thing cruise a few miles. Hope your Dad is still enjoying the Goldsmobile too! This was still a great watch even though the outcome wasn't as hoped for.......so keep 'em coming!
Yay! Added Mook goodness! Merry Christmas from me in New Zealand, Mook!
I'd love to see you guys do an engine rebuild on this car!

I feel that. Just from watching him and dalton over at pole barn garage, I feel like my odds of successfully reviving an old car went from
37:42. Did Kevin remember to reset the distributor? Apparently the last person pulled it out and reset it after the timing chain jumped, thinking it would help.
The legend has once again uploaded
after the pontiac you should do the one next to it haha
You should make that first fifteen minutes into a separate video that you refer newbies to watch so they can understand the revival sequence. Good stuff, as always.
Nice. I like that Nash sitting next to it..
Frankly, the Nash intrigues me more than the Poncho...
Yeah, me too. We had one when I was a kid. Family went from MO to California and back. Will never forget that trip.
Really, that is the interesting one!
That's a real nice car. Pull the motor, rebuild that puppy, and get her on the road!

Mook is so cute. “ those meddling kids” not sure if it was in reference from Scooby Doo
Replace the bent pushrods and she'll run; I've done this before. When the pistons smack the valves it inadvertently will bend them.
I missed a shift, overreved and bent all the pushrods on a SBC. Broke a couple of lifters. Put in new pushrods/lifters and it ran perfect.
Agree Phil
That stock motor is so low compression its not an interference engine even at a high rpm theres no way the valves can ever hit the piston ever under no circumstances so thats not how pushrods got bent if they are bent which i doubt they are
Beautiful Lemans 😍 @Junkyard Digs
Dissimilar metal is always a fun time. The exhaust manifold studs in my crown Vic literally welded themselves in like that. Lots of fire hammer and pb was required.
Good one, Mook!

That sucks that the engine was worn out. I really thought the timing set would of got it to run. Great video Kevin.
It’s so satisfying to watch you work everything is done right, unlike another channel I watched where they removed the spark plugs in an engine that had stood for years with a windy gun 😱
Words fail! Keep up the good work.
I’d like to see something else with the truck chassis with the Perkins in it. :).
Mook is the engine whisperererer...”The engine tells us its secrets, “ lol...
This is one of my favorite Junkyard Mook spin offs.
Now I'm curious if it would've run longer with some 20:1 two stroke premix
20:1??? Is anything made to run on that? I thought they were all 40:1 or 50:1. Not that I'm anywhere near an expert on 2 strokes.
Just keep doing what you do!! Thanks for the content!!

The 69 302 that's in my 67 Mustang had the same type of timing gear.
That has to be the most stupidest thing they could have used.
That timing gear set served the purpose if people serviced them when they were supposed to, but I don't know anybody that ever changed their timing gear set because it was time. People usually waited until there was a problem before they got into that.
Pontiacs were notorious for breaking that timing gear and jumping the chain. I've seen 'em do that at 60K miles back when these were still commonly on the road.
But this one didn’t beat you either, and you still have a perfect record, because, in spite of the previous damage, you STILL DID get it to run at least for a moment...
4:05-7:00 should be a separate video of 'getting it running instructions'. NO ONE will be able to find those instructions unless it's labeled as such, unless they stumble across this video by accident. So you'll continue to get those questions. Keep up the great work!
can tell where the house used to be by the row of trees that used to serve as a windbreak. (I grew up not far from there) - I recall that era of Pontiac timing chain issues too. Did a timing chain job on a high school friend's '66 LeMans in the early '70s, only had about 60k on it when the chain let go. It did bend a valve. And Ford used nylon timing gears on late '60s 302s. Did one on another friend's '68 Galaxie, plus a badly needed valve job while we were at it. Had 100K plus on it.
When's junkyard Mook going to make a new video we miss seeing her face on the video get her something to do Merry Christmas mook

If the valves were bent it wouldn't have compression and it won't hold compression
@@bolambert6457 which is what's happening, anyways weren't most engines by then interference engines?

I like the '71 Pontiac le mans, styling wise we picked up a lot styling cues for the Australian Holdens. Similar suspension front and rear, same goes for the disc/drum set up and the 10 bolt rearend. 350 chev V8, turbo 400 automatic or 4 speed muncie. All other motors and transmission were locally designed and built.
Great video, very good explanations!
