- Although we're having an awesome time rebuilding our rides, like the Porsche, we love saving more from barns, fields and woods. This is a super cool V8 Mercury Comet, that we fell in love with at first sight. It has a great history and we hope to see it back to its former glory. Can we getting it running after sitting for 31 years?

The lady that work in the Post office. In my small town had a 64 Fairlane 260 automatic. Black with red and white interior. Beautiful car. She left her windows down and a lit cigarette was throw from a passing car onto the front seat. Before anyone noticed. Smoke was billowing out the window's. The volunteer fire department arrived. It was completely on fire and a total loss. Miss Falls was her name. She had the car for a week. She cried like a baby! That 2 door Ford was a nice car. Shawn.
wtf u talking about bro?
@@Abhishek-C92 He's sharing a little bit of his fond memories with us, asshole.
Not everything is about "bro" and Instagram...
@@Abhishek-C92 it's a story
64 Comet's are beautiful cars.
When I was 11 years old, my father took the family over to a Mercury dealer in New Orleans, to pickup his brand new turquoise 1965 Mercury Comet, his company furnished car. I know it was 65 because it had the vertical pair of headlights. I thought it was one of the best looking cars that year, except for maybe the Mustang. I always wanted to drive that car, but it was before I could drive, before I had my drivers license and because it was a business owned car, I never would be able to drive that car. Every performance or muscle car that I have owned has been a Chevrolet, but I always remembered and admired that little Mercury Comet and every time I see a restored Comet, especially with an upgraded 289 or 302, I have have to stop and admire it.
'So the bench is gonna be the ground'. That's just what I would do 😂. Please never change this channel. Don't get all fancy on us. I love how it's true to life. Keep going and God bless.
Haha Yeap 😁 you know it! Thank you!
Always the best looking 60s ford, in my opinion
I had two 64 Comet Calientes, a 202 and a 404, back in the day. Love driving them but new cars beckoned. I love your positive attitude and upbeat banter as you work on it. Thanks for letting us be a part of your adventure!
I love the Comet and the Falcon! My dad has a 64 Falcon that has been in the family since new, it was my great grandma’s. Super cool car.
Came for the Porsche stayed for the mercury, sick ride bro. She sounds mean!!!
😃😃
I drove a car just like that in high school, I loved it dearly. Mine was a 260, with a 3 on the tree. It had zero power anything, it did however have an AM radio.
@DeAnne
Me Too!
A Comet Calente
I love seeing old cars come back to life!
I love bringing them back! 🙂
@@BudgetBuildz There is nothing better than old school American steel. I don´t care much about the new stuff and find it boring. We need to bring back the fine art of cars like we used to have. To this day in the world there is no car more beloved than old school American steel. The level of love and dedication shown in the design of these cars and the continuing love of them shows that they know no equal. God bless you for bringing them back. Love the channel!
You’re so very right!!! Really glad you’re enjoying! 😊
Oh boy, this will be awesome! Speaking about mods, Shelby drop and frame connectors are a must. From there you can go for a Ford 8.8 out of a Explorer (Factory LSD and disc brakes, either Explorer or SN95 ones), GT40 or GT40P heads (also from a Explorer), Mustang Steve sells a front disc conversion that uses 2005-2014 Mustang GT Calipers (Either 2 or 4 pots) and 12.5" or 13.2" rotors for like $280, you can do a rack and pinion conversion using a 88-94 Cavalier steering rack, for the manual swap you can go for a T5 out of a late Fox Body, or a 99-04 V6 Mustang.
Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll definitely keep all of that in mind as we move along 🙂
I always loved the old Comets. My older brother had one. 289 with a 3 sp on the column
Awesome find, 64 and 65 comets are great looking cars.
A shed find sounds better than a tent find.
Haha
I'm jealous. I've always wanted a Comet and would love to find one. Wouldn't care how long it took to rebuild it.
When I was young I had a model kit of a '64 Comet Caliente. It was molded in red, didn't have to paint it. I LOVED that model! You have GREAT taste for COOL cars!! Your living my dream!!! THANKS!!!!
Awesome! Thanks so much! 🙂
I have that dealer promo in red '64 Caliente sitting on the shelf behind me.
Carbbed, points, with zero computer control, to hell with New age Junk.
your truck sounds sick
In a good or bad way? 😅
It just amazes me how these old girls can stand up to the elements when it comes to the paint and rust. You see things out here now, that are 10 years old on the roads, and when it comes to the paint and rust, they look like they're over 100 years old!
Gorgeous car.
Thanks 🙂
Fell in love with that car when in college a friend drove up with it. New 1963 or 64 comet. Believe it had the Ford 390 in it. Still remedy that day👍
Awesome!
I really like the squared off look of the early '60s cars. They did the same thing with the late '60s cars at Plymouth and Dodge. I don't like a lot of curves on a car. You'll say the best cars have some beautiful curves but I like the straight look.
Great project. The 260 cars generally had the 2 speed automatic, the 289s all got the 3 speed C4 automatic. The 3 speed was available with the 260, but rarely seen. The "Power By Ford" valve covers weren't made until 1968, and that car has a Mustang floor shifter installed, automatics were column-only that year. So it may well be a later 302/C4 swapped in. Count the bell housing bolts holding the trans to the engine. 5 bolts, 260 - '64 289. 6 bolts, later 289/302.
Yep, his first observation about this engine should have been that it was blue.
That car deserves a full restoration.
IT LOOKS LIKE , FORD GALAXIE !!!
The lines on that car are gorgeous! I see so much potential in it.
Thanks! Can’t wait to get her set up right 🙂
Elwood Engle was the designer of square Fords, starting with 61 Lincoln, then went to Chrysler
@@BudgetBuildz hello Michael. I am a new subscriber to your channel and it was because of this mercury. My father and I are classic ford collectors and restorers. Seeing this car brought back memories for me too. These cars are great but truly they are about the bonding you share with people while you have them. I truly enjoy what you do and I have plenty of videos to catch up on....lol. Take care and keep up the great work!!
I got really excited when I saw the new video was out!
I love these old Mercs ,your gonna make her come back to life .
The size and proportions of these vehicles made them appealing.
Cool v8 , nice muscle beast🚘🚘🚘🚘🚘
😃😃
Re watching some of your older videos, had to smile, you mention your subscribers reaching 50k, watching this in January 2024 you are at 257k 👍👍👍
Nothing like a all American V8 💪
WOW. TOTAL ABGEFAHREN SEID IHR. VOR ALLEM DER BURNOUT AM ENDE DES VIDEOS. GEIL 👌👍🍺
Great new project! I have a soft spot for the 60's era cars. Have owned a 68 Plymouth since 1992, my mom got it new in 68. Good to see you getting it back on the road!
Thank you! Awesome! Is it the one in your pick? Can’t tell if it’s a barracuda or a valiant?
A family history with a car is a beautiful thing. I say that as a lifelong Plymouth lover.
love this show im in the UK but love american cars
Love the comet and fairlane body style..
A.T. Gray no doubt, so clean. Coyote motor and 6 gears , big brakes, pro touring basically. Blue or green or both LOL.
@@deborahchesser7375 NO No no..
I love how the car has a look about it! It’s says, I’m not messing around!
Loved the little fords. My first car was a 64 fairlane sport coup, buckets, 4 speed.
Mine was a 76 amc hornet and clutch went out my grandma gave me her 64 comet 289 4 speed car
A factory black two door hard top. Very cool!
He said it was a factory white car.
Those huge starters aren't usually too bad until you slap in some long tube headers lol nice find
Those seats are from a 1980s Ford Fox car (Mustang or Fairmont), and front seat belts became a government requirement for all cars sold domestically built starting January 1, 1964.
i own an all original 65 chevy, without seatbelts.
You have great content. Your channel has become my favorite. Nice to see a skilled mechanic in action. keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! Really glad you’re enjoying 😊
Can't wait to see it going down the road. I have one of these back in the 80's.
Of course it runs.
Awesome throw back video
Awesome! Another channel saving old iron! They will never make cars as easy to work on this again so we have to save as many classics as we can. You got a sub here. Keep up the good work!
Thanks you so much! You’re darn right there! Glad to have you! 🙂
Nice job! You've inspired me to get my (14 years sitting) 289 running in my 66 Mustang.
makes me miss the 64 comet caliente convertible i once had.
Nice car. Back in the sixties when I was a kid, my parents had a white 1964 Comet Caliente 4 door.
A nice car for family trips. And plenty of power for the mountains.
Shoot I’m loving the beginning of this build as much as the Porche. Can’t wait for more content!
😊😊😊 can’t wait to share more!
loving this build. This girl has a thing for old v8 cars :)
I'm pretty sure that transmission is a C-4 green dot. My '64 Fairlane Sports Coupe came with one. Being that your Comet came with a 260, that tells me it's a late '63. My Fairlane was too but, it came with a 289.
A friend of mine in h.s. had a 64 falcon. He bought a set of headers for it, that's when we found that his car didn't have the 289 like the car lot told him. That was in '70
I do believe it is as well, pretty good ole transmissions. Cool!
donnie brown What’s funny is I was told this was a 289 lol They’re easy to confuse.
Cool video, awesome car, I think they’re getting pretty rare. The rust isn’t bad at all, body looks straight excellent find, it will be a fun driver, thanks.
Thanks a lot! For sure 🙂
Beautiful car
Memories
I love those classic muscle cars.
Me too! 🙂
@@BudgetBuildz I'm glad she runs.
Wow. My Ma had one of those '64 Comets when I was a very young child. Hers was white with a red interior. Love it.
Cool project. Please don’t forget about the Targa! Also make sure your jack stands we’re not on the recall. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the entertainment
Thank you! You know I won’t 🙂 We’ve some ole school ones!
Always a good sign when the wheels are spinning and it's not buried in a foot of mud
another one saved , probably it will be gone to the crusher some day. thanks guys!
Great car. Love these mid-60’s Fords. Easy to work on, and pretty cheap. Parts for the body might be an issue. If you go manual, find a close ratio “Top Loader”. It will bolt right on with the right Factory bell housing. I had a 63 1/2 Falcon Sprint with a crate Shelby HiPo 289, Top Loader, and narrowed 9” rear end. 45 years later, I wish I still had it. Looking forward to new videos on this. Memory lane for sure!
Definitely! Oh for sure, if we Cyclone out the car then in basically deletes all the missing trim. I’ve got a 3 speed in the garage we may end up using, but wouldn’t mind a nice 4 speed. That sounds like it was a pretty cool ride! I’ll keep em coming 🙂
The keys were made out of an alloy called E6 which contain copper zinc and lead . That’s what made them break in two pieces and whear so quickly . Nice car 👍
Congratulations!! you deserve the ability to work from home...Love your channel!
Thanks so much!!
It just goes to show you don’t need a fancy shop, and all the fancy tools to make it happen
thanks
Greetings from Poland!
Good to see you doing the basics before cranking on it to try starting it. Lots of people just hope for the best and sound disapointed when it won't idle or the accelerator pump doesn't work.
Thanks! 🙂
Sounds fantastic will be so good when running right 👍👍
Thank you! For sure 🙂
Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Those are great little cars, and that one has a 260 ,aaahhh boy there's going to be some fun in short order coming
You know it! 😀
Oh my God I’m so glad it started that was a real nailbiter.
Yeah.It is SO RARE for a car to start in these 'Will it start ?'videos.
What a find. It can become a really cool car. And compared to the Porsche and the MGB ... that floor is brand new :-)
Thanks! Haha true that!
Nice build, that will keep you busy for the next 5 months 😉
Haha, we’re going to keep em moving now the best we can 🙂 first thing, get the Porsche done
That's a good looking car, hope it gets put back on the road.
Thank you, oh it will 😉
That car sounds awesome
Thanks! Can’t wait to hear it ripping down the road!
First and a Foremost, Thanks ever so much for Not calling your presentation a: Barn Find. So many do now, when they are in someone’s shed, garage, or out in the bush. You told it like it is, thanks again...
I had a 1965 comet caliente convertable wish I had it now man ,they are very rare at least in my area looking foward to seeing you do something with it,cool thing about them is alot of the electrical parts and dash are the same as a mustang and other fords
I had a '64 comet cyclone with a 289 4 barrel & a C4 auto. I wish I could find it, it was a beauty. Real classic lines. Who's the Richard Petty look a like?
Funny story. We had a 66 Comet it was the middle of winter 40 below zero . My mom was driving us to school. The car was warming up while we were inside the house. I looked out and the car went in to drive by itself. I can still picture my mom running down the street to catch the car.
Haha oh geez! Thanks for sharing!
Are you sure it isnt a 302 because the valve covers tell a different story. They are way wrong for the year. I would think the 260 may be long gone.
I love this car.
😊😊
The nice thing is everything under the skin was carried over to the 64 1/2 and 65 Mustang. My first car was a 64 1/2 coupe. It's what I learned on. My 289 was a hybrid. It was a 260 but factory bored to a 289. Timing chain and gears were 260 but the cylinder displacement was 289. Loved how you could get to anything under the hood with ease, downright roomy
Absolutely! Sounds sweet!
I had a 64 Mercury Comet Calente 2 door convertible as my first car
Remember as a kid a neighbor up the street with a comet . Fire engine red
white/ red interior .... 4 speed Hurst shifter......
Craigar Mags . Pair of traction bars as well .
It was a sweet looking car !
Sweet!!
All the work you do has inspired me to begin working on and upgrading my own car👨🏼🔧👨🏼🔧👨🏼🔧
Awesome!!
Fantastic keep up the good work
This is a nice old muscle car,a bit of wk needed, but the old girl is still in one peace & I'm shaw she will get her mojo bk,I'm liking the fact the doors are pillarless & windows in bk go all the way down 👍,keep up the great wk,looking forwards to more on the Porsche Targa
Thanks so much! Can’t wait to share more on the Porsche!
You're at 246K now..😊
I had a 63 Comet as my first car, but, it was a 140 cui 6 cyl, great car!!
Enjoy your Comet. I also am restoring a 1964 Comet at this time. Hold onto your tail lights. They have the optional back up "clear" lens.
Thank you! Awesome! For sure 🙂
I had a 1964 Comet Caliente red with vinal top. Loved that car.
Get some torq thrusts, new diff, glittery white paint, and headers and you have a super cool cruiser
Enjoy your videos! great work.
FYI# 1 cyl is on the Left (Drivers Side) Bank for GM and FORD
Born in 64, had a 71 Comet, name same as one of the persons you named in this Video! Cool!
Putting it on the trailer I'm thinking wow that sounds great. It was the Chevy!
😁😁
Youd be surprised but even if a part sat on a shelf for decades it can still be very good. I owned a 1982 Kawasaki and the starter needed to be replaced so i bought one from Japan that had sat for a long time. Still worked fine and dandy.
Oh absolutely! Probably has better parts in it then a brand new, new one 👌 As long as it’s not a rubber product or a condenser I’ll go for it 🙂
@@BudgetBuildz me too! I got carb insulators and they were rock hard so i sent them back. Had to order those from Japan the second time around because hardly anyone stateside had any in stock and those who did wanted my first born and my left acorn. $200 for a set of 4. Not even crackheads sell them for that much. Must have tried Meth and loved it. LOL
Geez 😅 part hunting can be a pain!
First two digits in Ford part numbers are the first year the particular part was used, followed by one or two letters, then the actual part number, then the engineering change level. Best parts numbering system out there!
Should have waited! Starting in 1963, front seat belts were standard in all makes. 260 engine with a 2.80:1 rear? Surely a flat land flyer! I had a 65 Mustang with the 289/271 and four speed, which I was able to order with 3.80:1 gears. Kind of hard on gas, but acceleration was fabulous.
Pretty cool old Comet! She’s not a muscle car version but, I’ll bet you can make her one. Thanks for bringing another forgotten classic back to life.
Thanks! Oh for sure 🙂
My B-I-L had a red Caliente'. I had a black 63 Comet S-22....Both cars were awesome and fun to drive. Thanks for the flashbacks !! : ) Best wishes on this restoration.
Sweet! Thanks so much!
Looks like my 64 Buick Skylark. Same shape too lol love it
Awesome!
Great sound guy's. .enjoyed your post. .
