LateNightGaming is this real
Bro you channel is awesome your very subtle, and you explain it all perfectly. I subscribed
0:52
Yeah, there's something weird about aiming down the sights of a rifle while your friends dance and play the guitar.
All the smart people call it narrative dissonance.
I just call it hilariously out of place.
LateNightGaming it’s still amazing all of them
Did you watch Skyfall? Out of EVERY piece of Halo media (including games, movies, books, etc) Skyfall is the only one that actually depicted the hell that soldiers in Halo go through
"that's a Jackal, better kill it"
Halo 2 in a nutshell.
I was hoping he was gonna say ''It's cold, you can tell by the temperature''
Sees a purple dot moving in the distance. -pop- not saying ship.
If ODST was made in 2018
I need an entire walkthrough with that voice XD
Rookies Mind? lmao
Dranoel Arios
Hm. I give you 2:1 odds that you'll want to strangle him by the end, assuming he stuck to the obnoxious "subtle detail" dialogue.
„Hm. I should jump out of my pod now. Ouch! That obviously hurt. I better get a health pack since I will probably die otherwise...“
Dranoel Arios you can buy odst for the mcc.
I loved odst and that endure achievement was intense! I got so many people that wow it was hell but it deepened friendships was worth them doing dumb stuff to get us to fail lol
I remember tweeting on the 24th of Feb.
"ODST wasn't just a game, it was an interactive artwork. From the dark streets and rainy skies, to the battles in the outskirts of Mombasa, Halo 3 ODST is truly a gem."
Valkyrie That was my bday!
And I assume somebody immediately shitposted that? I got openly kicked for saying I enjoyed the narrative style of odst more than 3,and more than reach.
"50,000 people used to live here, now it's a ghost town"
While not a Halo quote, it definitely fits with the ghostly atmosphere of New Mombasa.
Patrick Hild I thought you were making a comment about my dead channel lol
LateNightGaming
Lmao no! I'd go for "Not to worry, we're only flying half a ship!" for that one.
A million people is probably closer to the overcrowded reality of 2552 Earth.
8 to 10 billion on Earth, possibly. Millions in each city?
That's a quote from cod 4
It's funny how you drew a connection between the narrative of ODST and the player's gradual descent into the rings of Hell, because I'm pretty sure the robot that acts as your guardian angel was called Vergil. Vergil (or Vergilius in Latin) was also the name of the lost soul that guided Dante through Hell in the Divine Comedy. I would've never picked up on that had you not mentioned it. Great retrospective!
Want some more epic Divine Comedy symbolism? All of the Data Hive is an allusion to Hell as depicted in it.
You start on sublevel 7, and make your way down to sublevel 9 (Circle 9). There may be extra references on levels 7 and 8, though i can't remember, HOWEVER, sublevel 9, at least the first bit, is partially frozen. Circle 9 of Hell was also frozen. It's also here the Policeman turns traitor if you have all audio logs, possible allusion to the Devil, considering his connection to the corrupt police chief (damned if I remember his name). Top it all off with a flame thrower and Vergil, and you have one big Divine comedy allusion.
I was about to comment on that symbolism as well.
wow. the devs are to be commended for that!
This made me wonder what a Devil May Cry: ODST type game would be like, as in playing as a regular human and not a super-powered badass
Didn’t they make a game called Dante’s inferno
ODST is one of my favorite Halo games. I wish you would do a full retrospective on it. I never knew why I loved the atmosphere until now. Thank you
Even the music is absurdly good!
The music makes it tense and keep you on your toes, adds a tone of mystery to it when you're wondering the lonely streets of New Mombasa
Same
D Behnia heck ya. I’m very surprised he didn’t mention the music score at all
he did a wonderful job of taking the reasons why we enjoyed this game so much and put them into words so others could understand, understanding it even better than some of us already did
Man I freaking love ODST! I really hope we get another Halo spin-off game someday that has the tone and atmosphere of ODST! :)
Luke Skywalker the 2nd Halo can honestly go on for many many more years with all of its content tbh. I'm talking multiple TV series, movies, spin-offs, etc
Beasty108 I agree. It really can! :)
Covenant elite squad during the great schism
Halo:ODST 2
Probably not with 343 at the helm.
Ya know, I kinda want another ODST game. Anyone else agree?
I want an entire ODST saga. So many amazing stories to tell with a wonderful branch of the UNSC as the backdrop.
Unpopular opinion: I kinda only want one ODST game. A sequel would only fall short
@@rickygforce4217 I want another spin off but not odsts again, something new
I want one
LNG: “Wow its some alien writing on the wall. I should look out for more more. I wonder wha-“
Me: “Oh thank god it’s over”
I felt like Halo 3: ODST had better atmosphere than Reach
Chaos Marine it was definitely a game very driven by its setting ala Dark souls
Dude same.
Chaos Marine
But, lone wolf, that shit was fucking dope.
its the dark souls of halo
it look better as well but I still like reach loved odst enjoy and dislike halo 5 in some ways and others. halo 6 I kind of hope as a atmosphere like odst rain wind feeling the rain it soak into your boats. but I don't think that gonna to happen unless the flood does come back. but well you can improve it but can't fully fix what been done in the past two games
I genuinely think you fully descrided a good peice on why I love H3 ODST so much. I remember when I first heard of the game back in 2012 ( I was 12 at the time) and I was at my cousin's house and I asked him whats this game was? Because at the time I only heard of the main Halo game and Reach. He told me I shouldnt play it, that it was boring, that the game sucks. But I was dumb founded. He explained why he disliked it but from what he read of reviews at the time. Well I said Im going to try it and see what all the hubabub was about. I just remember being in the drop pod and falling, hurt, and confused. Because most games didnt leave you on your own. I remember walking up and down the level trying to find where to go until I saw my first brute. I was excited to get into action. But when I fought him I immediately died. I was confused until I noticed that I only had a heath bar, thinking I must get shields later. But without shields then that meams that I was weak and not as strong as the cool master chief. I was vulnerable, I felt like I had to be careful. I never beated that level as a kid. But then a few years later I got my own 360 and the first thing I got was halo 3 and odst. I then finally played ODST, and I was in awe. The sheer atmosphere of your ODST and the loneliness of New Menbasa. I personally think H3 ODST is my second fav game of all time. First being Ultimate Doom or Halo 3. I thanks you @latenightgaming fir just showing other how great just the atmosphere itself can be great for vudeogames to connect to the player. I always loved the phrase Show, dont tell. And that is the reason why I love Halo 3 ODST
Uh oh. LateNightGaming has his immersion goggles on!
Nevinger 👀
👁👁
I think halo 3 odst will always be my favorite halo game
I always thought that the quit atmosphere really works in halo
Before I felt like I could cut down covenant like daisys because I was a super soldier
So when this game came out and I played it, I felt like a child who used to play with guns and pretend to kill my freainds and then watch a war documentary and realize that this wasn't just a game
I think something that will always stick with me is how your not the center of the story
Your not the hero who gets the girl
Your a bystander witnessing hell and simply just trying to help your comrades and simply survive
It's something I've never seen in any other game or any form of storytelling
Halo 3 odst will always be a part of me and in my opinion deserves all of it's praise
Arguably I think it's the best game ever made
I just paused the video.
I can almost not believe everything you've said in the first three minutes. Why, you may ask?
BECAUSE LITERALLY A WEEK FROM TODAY I LOADED HALO 3 ODST, SAT ON MY BED, SHUT THE CURTAINS, PUT ON HEADPHONES, AND DIVED INTO THE SWEET AMBIENT RAINSTORM ON THE STREETS OF NEW MOMBASA. I felt so giddy as I prepared myself to take on the covenant as an ODST, enjoying the pure symphony and art the game invited me into. It was an experience to remember. Man. I genuinely love and appreciate this classic Halo game. And I hope dearly that one day, I'll be able to come home, relax, and enjoy some good ole Halo, with Marty's absolutely gorgeous music.
I agree so much with him, I put my headphones on and shut out all the light from my room, luckily it was night when I did this, and I could FEEL the rain on my helmet, I could FEEL myself walking through New Mombasa and my boots being wet as I walked through the rain, and once the day time levels came on I have never been more afraid of the covenant in my life. I almost screamed as a hunter charged at me and the brutes during the night they scared me
Alex George imagine vr ODST
right!?? i was gonna say the same thing!
to bad 343 would NEVER let ODST go VR until after they do newer or popular classics first. to bad so many people have either hated it or forgotten it in the Halo Series in general
i think its on my list of top 5.
I fucking died at ODST in 2018😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
DoggosarenotPuppers it was fucking hilarious 😂 😂
It was great dude it literally reminded me of new games.
Oh man, there needs to be another ODST. And it should definitely expand on the open world/exploration aspect that the first game had. There's something really satisfying about roaming those streets of New Mombassa, and opening enough audio logs to access a hidden weapons cache.
I decided to get a bunch of immersion mods for fallout 4 that made it tougher than life and the set the difficulty to max (no hunger bullshit thought) and having to play in the pitch black with heavy rain with only my flashlight and sniper and no distractions was without a doubt the best experience I've had in gaming. You feel like your actually in it
After playing ODST all the way through, the next time a big rainstorm came over town, I just walked around outside in the late afternoon. I love experiencing in person that lonely but comforting feeling ODST provides.
ODST is like a peaceful rainstorm.
I also felt the same way with the Courier in New Vegas.
yas
Yep.
Da fuk ???
The Player Character in Fallout: New Vegas.
Same bro, I loved how the dlc’s built upon the main storyline.
I loved halo 3: ODST atmosphere. It felt dark and lonely through the eyes of a normal soldier. Human kind on the brink of destruction. It showed the prospective of a soldier that doesn't have the strength to lift a 1 ton suit of armor like normal clothing. You can hear it in halo 3 and 2 when marines are with Chief. They know they have a fighting chance & can win. Take the hero away and you see how dark the war is.
That was spot on. I try to explain to people why I like Halo so much. Halo 2 was my first, and its story telling (for me) to this day is still in an league of its own. But Halo odst, was a low key masterpiece. It truly did immerse you into the game. Even for the characters who actually spoke, they all had solid motivations to move them forward; whether it was survival, love, or for the sake of the war itself. The characters felt like they had purpose.
thank you I feel like I have always been the only one arguing that odst was my favourite, the atmosphere is thick like butter I loved it when it came out and I still love it now.
Shame dude, that you just discovered the subtitle ('subtle', it auto-corrected there, my bad.) atmosphere, this Halo game had to offer. It was the only thing that felt so great about ODST; the city and the night told a story of its own, and that made it so much fun to traverse the Mombasa streets during a Covenant onslaught! Also Vergil/Superintendent was a nice touch too and the audio files were amazing to discover on what New Mombasa was like before the aftermath. Like what a great Halo game to 'Prepare to Drop' into anytime you played!
SirMaliceCallus oh I always knew it was there, but I never TRULY appreciated it until recently haha
LateNightGaming Hey better late than never, as they say. I can say for one that back in 09 it was such a nice change for the original Halo trilogy that it made me appreciate all the little details ODST had to offer!
Odst was the first halo game I got and I am so glad that it was the game that introduced me to halo. It is by far, my favorite halo game.
Agreed!,also my first and fav!
Wow. I never caught the circles of hell connection before.
yup that's why the AI/Hurogok is named Vergil in reference to the poet Virgil who leads Dante through hell in Dante's Inferno.
And why the audio logs are organised as 'circles'.
man thats deep
FINALLY someone else gets why ODST is one of my favourite Halo games, and has been since it came out.
I just want a remaster so that we get fog and rain in Mombasa
Jeremy Nolen they did
Ur daily memes Wasn’t remastered, but potted on mcc. They just gave it better fps i believe.
I remember watching the VLogs on the development of the game and what really stunned me was that the game engine couldn’t handle rain, so they cheated a bit to make it seem like rain.
They did a damn fine job because whenever I tell people this they are shook lol
You could barely see the rain sadly.
+FrostyWheats GameDev is all about cheating, they are great devs.
Can I just say thanks? I've always argued that ODST was better than most people give it credit for. Watching this has helped me realise why I liked the game that much, from someone who can word things alot better than I can.
Marty's and Michael's music for this game is a masterpiece! I love to listen to the soundtrack. The game's is one of the best halo games. I hope we get a halo game with the same atmosphere in future.
Everything about ODST is amazing. Especially the music
I was watching a video on film making. One of the points he talked about is that dialogue should be for character, instead of information. I feel like the older Halo games understood this
ODST is hella underrated, but I'm glad you saw the light and really took time to experience the game
Honestly I didn’t really listen to u cos I just got soooo indulged in the background music. I think the audio (ambience and music) is the main reason why ODST was so great and indulging, for me atleast. Also me getting lost in the music whilst You were talking proved your point about mindless exposition ;)
Once again, great video!
having a character explain every subtle detail is like sending someone a text from across the room then going up to them and asking "did you read my text?"
Seeing the "If ODST was made in 2018" part felt awful yo. I wasn't sure if I wanted to kill myself or "Rookie" lol. It's made me realize that I play games w/ the dialogue muted most of the time. (enjoy the music and sound design yo)
If it's not in a cutscene, I don't (want to) hear it. That also means I get completely and utterly lost sometimes (a lot really), but it's an _adventure._ It feel more real when you have to look for where you're supposed to be going.
Also gotta thank my older bro for hating ODST (and Reach) when it came out b/c that meant I got to keep it all for myself :D
Also the silent master chief allows every play through to be a different story
This video is art.
ODST is a masterpiece in immersive game world design. The rain the quietness, the lights…it’s pure perfection.
The music is amazing also.
Great video!!
Hah I'm actually watching this with my ODST shirt on, I haven't worn this shirt in years and years and then this shows up in my sub box.
Not enough people appreciate this game. Love how you explained the subtle things, and set the tone of your gaming experience. Well done
When you play a Video Game on its hardest difficulty.....both the best and worst elements shine brightest. Thus making the game much easier to talk about and discuss.
"Hell on Earth" reminds me of Doom II: Hell on Earth. Maybe a reference?
Also, I love your Rookie voice
I just bought ODST for $5 and turned off the lights and played for hours. I spent so much time just exploring the streets and the dark hallways. I followed the story and there was one part when DARE said that she might die. I noticed how I focused up and hauled ass to go save DARE. I got fully immersed into the story and can’t wait to finish it in the morning. Truly the best $5 I’ve ever spent
I did exactly what you did when i got my one x. And i noticed all the little details that i never noticed when odst came out. And i loved the game even more than i did then. If 343 want to make a great halo game, we need a spin off like odst.
What you said about engaging with and BEING the Rookie is so true. The first time I played this, in one go on launch night, when that first sign lit up, I stopped. I stepped back. Watched it turn off. Stepped forward. Stepped back. Went "huh", and followed its advice. That's one memory I made with the game and one that stands with me until now. ODST remains my favourite from the series forever for many reasons, a few you've summed up here. Glad to see others appreciate it as well.
I never got Xbox live until late 2010 so I’m achievement hunting on my current profile if anyone wants to join! 360 players can play with those using back compat
Gamer tag: LateNightHalo
I’d be down I love ODST
Im down too. I love odst
What's your gamertag? I already know latenights but what's yours
i still play on the xbox 360 and the xbox lol but i all ways play halo
Im down since odst is one hell of a masterpiece
ODST was ahead of its time. I really want a spiritual successor.
ODST had the best soundtrack
This is like why I love Artyom so much, the way he only ever speaks in the loading screens as he writes his journal, to me it shows what the player may have missed/ allows them to really get into his mindset and view
The bit about the protagonist talking too much was genuinely accurate :'(
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most annoying games ive played in recent memory. Not only does it just play like a Ubisoft open world game, its protagonist WONT SHUT UP
It's cool that you've made a video essay about a game I played in 2009 that eloquently sums up why it's one of my favorite experiences in gaming to this day.
And this is why I continue to say ODST is the best Halo game to be made, the final work of art by Bungie, and my favorite game of all time. It truly marked the end of the era of story telling and ushered in the new age of multiplayer-centered games.
i listen to the Halo 3: ODST soundtrack almost every night to go to sleep. it’s wonderfully breath taking. awesome video man
one more thing: your video sent chills down my spine. i wish i could go back and point out all the little details to my old self. just a kid playing halo. i miss it man, your videos make me remember some of those times
6:49 This is really true, and hilarious
The thing I love about having a quiet protagonist (besides what you are saying in the video) is that it allows me to fully hear the atmosphere of the game. My favourite thing with ODST was just walking slowly around the city, listening to the rain, hearing the brutes conversations and the music... my god the music. Wandering through the city to be relaxed to fully immerse myself.
I agree what you said about the hardest difficulty, I played through titanfall 2 on master difficulty nad its one of the best gaming experiences ive had in a while
ODST is like a fine wine, it seems to get better with age. Not many games do that
Awesome video!!!, greetings from Venezuela. Please keep making videos like this
Possibly one of the best games ever made till this day. I haven't found anything like this.
Beautiful. Loved this game so much.
Joseph Staten is a true genius to have made a connection to that theme of the guardian angel. I think ODST had the best thematic elements of all the halo games imo.
I was wondering why you were playing a lot of H3 ODST on your Xbox. My wondering will stop... for now
Halo 3 ODST always brings a shiver through my spine. Man, it's been fun and it still is. This is the one game that I can always find myself going back to.
That one room no sir it was every goddamn room in halo 2
I just watched this amazing video in 2023 and agree with all of it! The part with the over-narration was hilarious and really irked me haha. I feel that part is soo true for games and movies in general these days. I recently replayed ODST recently, it was like a first-time experience all over again, I loved it!
Finding the terminals for the first time with Sadie's story was such a surreal sensation of immersion. Getting to witness a story unfold as you explore that same city that was once lived with people living their lives, to only six hours after invasion was such a shock to me. Searching for clues for what happened to your ODST members while exploring Sadie's story was amazing! It was a part of world-building and story telling that I enjoyed very much. Plus the voice acting of the terminals was great too!
The music was also a huge factor for me, it set the tone and atmosphere ten fold. It made me believe that the Rookie was really alone in this now vast and empty city. Only to realize that the city was talking to you through signs, altering you with lights and roadblocks to having ATMs spew money to draw your attention. It blew my mind that a city was talking to you and getting to meet this "city" through the Engineer, learning of another character from the terminals and to see Vergil in the "flesh" was again mind blowing.
Amazing video!!
One of the best RUclips videos I’ve ever watched. I was fucking moved by the childhood roleplay starwars action figure story, and spent months trying to come back to find it. Thank you.
First
To wish you all a good day.
I remember playing ODST a year ago, I was gushing at all the small details in the environment.
Stumbling through a closed hospital, brutes lying dead on the stairs next to marines, a table flipped over by a door entrance to block the now-corpse of a brute, with two jackals inside the room cackling to each other over the corpse of a brave soldier, sitting up against the wall with a hole in his chest.
This is truly a game that tells a story, not through words and flashbacks, but through the visuals. And I do truly love it for that.
And then there's badass firefight, with nonsensical action as you play as the cigar smoking Sgt. Johnson as you mow them covie bastards down with a detached turret mopping an endless army.
One of my favorite videos from this channel yet. Do more! Environmental story-telling is my absolute favorite subject when it comes to video game story-telling.
I just like anyone speaking so pasionately about halo. liked and subbed
Thank you. Your intro to the game was great. It hits the nail on the head on how I felt while playing the game. I would absolutely love an ODST style game from 343 where they can put their lore in the game and make it as immersive as they do their stories. Use it to explain in physical detail what's going on and place the scale of the situation in the gameplay.
What you say at the 10 minute mark, man, I've been wanting to play the game again because it was always my favorite. But now, when I do, I'm going to take it even slower and appreciate it even more.
I used to hate this game back in the day but now I regularly play it usually on the street smarts playlist on mcc
Sadie's Story is one of my favorite Halo lore moments, especially in the games. It gives a very human story that you don't really see when you are playing a super soldier. And when you find all the logs and come to the point where the side story intersects with the main game, it made me really feel for the characters from it.
ODST also benefits from half your squad coming from Firefly, so if you are a fan of that, the squad banter is pretty enjoyable.
i want a book about the person who went through new mombassa tagging the place up.
I think this is my favorite video you've made, sums up completely how I felt while playing this game
I agree with playing games on harder difficulty. I played The Last of Us and thought it was good, but overrated. But i replayed it on survivor difficulty recently, and I totally fell in love with it. I had to explore the levels to scavenge supplies; I felt like a survivor. The combat was challenging but fair. It hurt when I had to use a Molotov or health pack. It changed my opinion of the game.
The more I reflect on ODST the more I think it may actually be my favourite Halo game. I couldn’t agree more with you that I love games that allow you to slow down and experience the world that has been crafted.
ODST, Bioshock, Prey and games of this ilk are more often than not the types of games I look forward to and love to play (RPGs like Skyrim and Witcher 3 not withstanding) and this video really captured why I feel this way.
Awesome job!
Why am I crying in the club right now
Kevin Manfredi lol
That music just immerses me in the environment. My favorite soundtrack from all Halo's for sure
TRUE i think im crying
I didn't remember ODST too well, but seeing the clips from this video took me back to this place, and I realize just what ODST gave and how terrifying it was. I admire that you took the time to highlight a game that I imagine most people forgot about.
On another note, I don't think all non-silent protagonists make for poor player engagement with the narrative. Sometimes they can juxtapose their own worldviews with the overarching world presented to the player. However, I generally prefer that protagonists don't talk during the gameplay. I can agree that it takes away from the focus on the gameplay and gets hand-holdy.
Disappointed the mic warning didn’t say “sorry about the hisses, Kevin Durant was in the room”
I love the way you describe scenes in your videos. It literally makes my mouth water.
Can we get a similar in depth vid on reach please? It was to me what ODST is to you. Thanks.
I think he said in another video that he thinks Reach has a bad story like halo 5. Don’t quote me on that though.
This was a great vid! Thanks for posting it. ODST was the first Halo game I played and I fell in love with it!
Do more streams! #cortanaWasPurpleCE
I always love when someone covers ODST. By far my favorite game from the Halo series.
I have one question tho, why not the mcc version😂
TheFatJohnShow I sort of felt like doing the original. Having those old loading screens and menu
I just wanted to say that this is one of the best videos I've ever watched, and I mean it. I wish more people were willing to take note of the things that you can experience in games like this.
Love you LNG and keep up the great work!!!
higher FOV
cat yes please
Without a doubt, this game is a hallmark in the Halo universe. I enjoyed everything about this game.
Honestly the whole "silent" player character is one part of the game's way of *showing not telling* a story.
About 2 years ago, one of my friends and I spent a night playing this game on legendary and getting every single log. Early on, we were really into the action and constantly bantering, giving each other advice and commands on when to advance. We were both really inexperienced as we hadn't played Halo in a while and had to work together just to survive. This was even in the usually very easy Rookie parts. After about 5 hours in, we had so many moments in the Rookie parts where we were silent, just driving down the streets in our Mongoose, making sure we had all the logs and making it from armory to armory to stay well stocked on supplies. We had both gotten so immersed that we only got out of the trance to go to sleep, wake up 6 hours later and then get back to work with our slow pace and effective movements. It was probably one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had.
12:10 New intro for podtastrophe?
* outro
Why did you say outro and intro?
Correcting himself.
Yeah but could be both
True.
ODST will always have a special place in my heart. In 10th grade I got sick for 3 weeks straight with H1N1. I had just got odst and laid in bed playing it. I was able to really enjoy this game with no interruptions.
The music to man. It's so fantastic that even the saxophone could be a character in the game given its distinction among the other instruments and the echoey quality it has. Almost like the city itself is dedicated to giving you an enjoyable nightlife experience regardless of the world ending.
I always loved this game, there's something about how the tone of the game and the perspective of an O.D.S.T that made it much more easy to just get observed into the dark and cold streets of New Mombasa. I really enjoyed the audio files found throughout as well.
