    Yes I know the Didact isn't TECHNICALLY dead but I'm analyzing H4's story in a bubble... Isolated from that awful comic that devalued everything H4 did.
    We are analyzing the story H4 is telling, not where it clinically fits in halo's timeline.

      Whilst not terrible, I did find it quite poor. The Chief's own dialogue was some of the better parts of it, and on PAPER at least, Static Carillon is a somewhat interesting character. But it still seems forced (ps, Brian Reed was fully aware the Didact felt he could not be Composed, as he also wrote the terminals where he said that, and commented as such)

      Not only did the comic devalue H4, H5 disregarded it completely. Truly a tragedy of storytelling because in spite of my issues with H4's gameplay and some info-dump areas of the campaign, I felt it was overall a great story. It's no masterpiece, but I have a hard time not considering it at least a worthy sequel to H3.

    I think 343 missed the religious aspects of how the Didact could have function.
    He was effectively the covenant's version of a fallen angel. he disobeyed his superiors and committed war crimes.
    but after the covenant was crushed they needed to believe something, so they went to awake the only living forerunner they know of

    • @Connor8609
      @Connor8609 6 лет назад +45

      This really is one of the best apsects of Halo 4's larger story in the extended media. Jul getting the Covenant behind finding a living god even though he fundamentally does it for his own selfish purposes.

    • @LordBeef
      @LordBeef 5 лет назад +26

      He also mirrors Christian views of Satan in this way, being a fallen angel that wished to control humanity, so that "all would be saved." Exact correlations between the Didact's and Lucifer's fall differ based upon which sect or denomination of Christianity one compares, but the basic comparison is mostly universal. He's the one who wanted to be God, but was not worthy nor humble enough.

      Funnily enough, people hated Halo 4 because it was different than the original trilogy. Halo 5's story did suck, and they could've focused on the battle between the Swords of Sanghelios more, but Halo 4 was emotional. I actually teared up when Cortana sacrificed herself and Chief and Lasky had that talk, because the lore was so wonderful in its own right.

    • @bean1an143
      @bean1an143 3 года назад

      Also, the Halo 4 part of Red vs Blue developed the characters more (like Tucker, who went from an immature pervert that nobody would have missed to a strong, capable leader that the other cast members would have wept for and respected). Funnily enough, the Didact and Locus are a little similar, but Locus accepted that he was a monster and strove to change while the Didact died hanging onto his beliefs.

    I feel Halo 4's story is in my opinion the tragic truth of FPS games, and it's quite simple sadly. People don't look at FPS and think "Deep, emotional, makes you think after you're done" and that may be why 4 got the reception that it did. 1-3 are loud, very easily identified and to the point. ODST and Reach told more somber and bittersweet stories, ODST I think did it much better than Reach. And after so many game of Chief being this one-liner action figure of a character we get 343's more accurate portrayal of him. I think the problem might've been from 343 making 4 right after Reach instead of focusing on some spin offs to get their ground and see what people want to see. Even then I'd argue Halo 4 isn't "Bad" or "One of the worst" It's my favorite, still have the limited edition case from day 1.
    But in the end, the casual fan didn't want a deeper story that had subtle hints and quiet moments of characters talking, things that honestly would've made Halo 5 more interesting even with the bad story it has. Wolfenstien the New Order showed that you can make a FPS have a powerful and strong story. I can only hope that the Didact will return and for 343 to at the least, have a story of the same quality of Halo 4. Level design? play style? I don't mind which it is they go with, as long as future Halo games has moments like any of the cutscenes and character interactions like 4. Jesus I need to learn how to compress my thoughts when typing these.

    I think Halo 4’s problem as a campaign was in its failure to actually provide context for the story. You should not have to read books outside of the game to properly understand details as important to the story as the ones you talked about. Halo 4 was my first Halo game, and I didn’t understand the point of the Didact until years after I played the campaign.

      Basically this. The Didact comes off as very one-dimensional and aimless, you get that awful Librarian cutscene about his backstory that makes no sense, then you have to do homework to even get half of what was going on with him.
      To me the biggest thing is how confusing he is. The Didact was an established character prior to Halo 4, yet parts of his portrayal run at odds with the Halo 3 terminals. I later find out its because this guy is literally a different person from that one, at which point I figured, "Well, wouldn't it have been way easier to just make the villain a new character?"
      That's basically what they did, only it's a confusing mess.

      You do have to remember, at one point, there were 2 Didacts. The Ur Didact, which is the one killed (maybe, not too sure if he's actually dead or not) at the end of Halo 4, and the Iso Didact, who was killed upon the activation of the Halo Array. The Ur Didact and the Iso Didact evolved into 2 very different characters.
      Unfortunately, none of that matters to the casual fan, but it is an important distinction for lore fans.

So since the didact couldn’t tap into the domain to help meditate the logic plague (which I BELIEVE he had, correct me if im wrong), he just spent thousands of years with rage just festering in his mind. Basically yeah, the Forerunners thought that about the domain, but later Halo lore shows that the Domain survived in some form or another. Being stuck in your head for a hundred thousand years with all the damage the Gravemind did to him, it is no wonder the Diadect woke up the way he did.

    Had the campaign made any effort to make these parallels between chief and The Didact, it may have been interesting. But because it didn’t, the only ones who can draw those conclusions are lore nerds like us.
    Without any prior knowledge, Halo 4’s Didact is just a cookie cutter “kill all humans” alien baddie that uses the force. No lore justification can fix that. Couple that with an extremely linear linear level design and it’s IMO the one of the least entertaining campaigns of any Halo game.
    Cortana’s death and Chief’s humanity were great parts of the story, and I think they were well done. I just wish the rest of it would have been done differently.

    I "Met" the Didact in the books before he appeared in Halo 4. When learning about this colossal being, this master of war, and the duality he displayed, between his highly self-evident power, prowess, and ruthless aggression, and the more calm, philosophical, even tender aspects of his more personal moments, I could see how powerful of a character he could be to the Halo Universe. Learning about his final banishment into the Cryptum, and spending 100,000 years alone with his own rage, paved the way for when I played Halo 4. The moment the Didact returned to the Universe was groundbreaking and I was so excited to see where it would go.
    I am greatly disappointed his story seems to have ended so abruptly not in the game, but the comics, it left a lot to be desired. I hope that he can be brought back into the active story line once more as he is an interesting character. I do know John referenced him as being "contained". So it is possible. As for the direction Halo is taken, the first trilogy was what I grew up on. Chief is, in a great many ways, a source of inspiration and an ideal I strived to be like. As I have aged, the games story has matured. The new more emotional and dark tone of Halo 4 was a welcomed development, and I hope that this style of story telling continues, because I have enjoyed the newer story, Halo 5 notwithstanding.

    5:40 If you have read the book "New blood" by Matt Forbeck, you will see that this is pretty much the goal of the Spartan IV program. To create super soldiers who are also people.
    The problem is, Halo 4 was OK if you had read the books, but lots of people did not read the books, therefore the Halo 4 "experience" as a whole, is lessened. The concessions made to those who would not have read all those books, (Such as that Librarian scene half way through) made the story telling feel very poor.

    My problem isn't characterization of Chief or the Didact.
    It has been the constant Retcons that screwed everything up. Forerunners were human, not a separate species. The whole point was the San'Shyuum believed that they were the ones to inherit the Rings only to find out who the Reclaimers really were. This change completely justifies the San'Shyuum and rendered the Arbiters arc invalid.
    Halo 4, 5 and Infinite act almost like they are in parallel universes rather than a continuation. And of course Microsoft chooses to weed out the workers rather than looking at the top brass.

    Personally another reason why I think Chief is so broken is because, while it’s been 4 years since, for him coming out of cryo his memory of the events on the ark are recent. The events where he lost Keyes, Johnson, and he doesn’t know what happened to the Arbiter. And now he learns he’s going to lose Cortana, he DOES lose Cortana. Imagine losing all of your friends in a row, it would break you. We see Chief does get emotional over these deaths, so it’s not like he’s emotionless until Cortana. He just can’t handle any more.

It was honestly beautiful and my day just got better after watching it. I'd love if you did more content like this, examining the meaning behind stories in games, movies and TV shows just like you did here.
    It's even more tragic that everything you just said was thrown out the window and forgotten entirely by 343 when that cum-stain of a campaign in Halo 5 rolled around. Chief's humanity, Cortana's sacrifice and the Didact all meant nothing in the end. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the story Halo 4 gave us, and this video that reminded me how much I loved it. :)

    I have plenty of problems with Halo 4. It's art direction, hameplay mechanics, level Design, and Multiplayer. But it's story is something I will continue to defend.
    It's honestly good to see more people appreciating Halo 4's story as the years have passed. Its such a pity that most people look at Halo 4's superficial plot, and judge it on that. Halo 4 has a really deep story that goes really underappreciated. I am kinda glad that as the years pass, more people understand this story, and see it for what it is.
    I have high hopes for Halo Infinite's story considering the lead writter is the one who wrote Arkham City, whose story I really loved. I hope 343 can deliver especially after that awful story in Halo 5.

    This completely changed my view on the halo franchise. Thank you for showing me how halo fours story makes sense in the halo story.

    I liked Chief better when he was a walking, unstoppable killing machine that pretty much single handedly defeated the entire Covenant and The Flood. Mowing down thousands of enemies without breaking a sweat, all while cracking excellent one liners.

    Just stumbled upon this video, I know it’s been a good minute since it’s been uploaded but thank you for this. This is the type of video i think a lot of us needed. I noticed during halo 4 chief had changed in almost a dramatic fashion, and this video kind of solidified my thoughts on the matter. I’ve never really given the books a read, so maybe I should do that.
    Again, great video. Always a pleasure seeing your content.

    ''Halo 4's story is about Chief being confronted with his own future: An old soulless machine of war robbed of his youth and perfected for war. THIS is the future that Cortana is scared of for Chief. The Didact became a soulless war machine that was sharpened for war... and will chief become the same?''''
    THIS is the theme I thought and hoped that Halo 5 was going to dig deeper in. Like Chief was going to do something horrible bc he thought he could bring back Cortana and that would be the reason he's hunted and that Locke might have to kill him. 343 really dropped the ball on some epic, emotional and thought provoking stuff for something that is down right garbage that is H5.
    Halo 4, you're not that fun to play but your story deserve alot of love.
    And yes, The Didact deserve some love too. He's a good written character.

    I really wish they would bring him back in a massive way! His character design and some of his dialogue was just overall badass. His back story and overall roll in tying the whole story together was spot on! Seriously could not of asked for a better villain.

    It really makes me sad that so many hated H4's story, I loved the deeper story that treated me like an adult reading a book rather than a child being told a story. It also brought of John's nature from the books which I thought was very satisfying as a fan who felt an almost distaste for the books from Bungie. With the introduction of Blue team in H5 they could have done so much if they kept to the H4 storytelling rather than overly dumbing it down into "Cortana is generic villain blah!" I am hoping they strike a good balance in the future.

    8:22 tracks like these are why I adore h4's soundtrack, it was so chilling and haunting with my personal favorite track being that covenent track that goes "wa wo, wa wa wo" it was so alien and it made the storm covenant feel different from the og.

    I’ve played every game more times than I can count and I personally think that Halo 4 was an amazing change of style for Halo. I’m almost certain that Halo 4 was the first game in the series that I genuinely balled my eyes out to, and despite the faults in the multiplayer its campaign is definitely one of my all time favourites

    This has to be the best analysis of H4's campaign. You can almost feel the dev's intent through this detailed look into Chief and the Didact. Thank you for making this.
