As a hobby game developer -- your take on the effort vs reuse that got us the sPnKr Fuel Rod gun is what likely happened.
The dev team was given a week to get the gun made, tested and out the door and only a few art team hours.
So they HAD to re-use existing assets. It sucks from a consumer standpoint, but as a developer, yup.
Imho, the halo5 fuel rod was LIKELY 90% of the way there -- A lot of PBR and shaders likely needed minor debugging (halo 5 and infinite both were developed for modern shader systems as h5 was on the xbox -- powered by an AMD apu).
The biggest thing was animations -- those require time-consuming tweaks to ensure they look right.
The textures likely would have been not too difficult to make, a few hours for a talented artist who could slap together layers to make the final texture.
But that time all adds up, so they cut out that pipeline entirely.

What I do mind is what the hell management was doing from 2021-2024 when they had the money and resources to actually add legacy weapons and game modes but didn't. What did they tell the staff? Why didn't they put content in the game that fans were begging for and instead dragged their feet for years? So I always heard it was because they were in immense technical debt. The slipspace engine is basically spaghetti code and most of the people that were very familiar with it were contractors who cycled out. I think they did want to add more stuff but the lack of people that actually knew what they were doing in conjunction with terrible mismanagement is why we have crap like them taking 6 months to update the UI of the game. Or why the falcon has been sitting pretty much complete in the game's files for almost 3 years at this point.

I really don't have faith in future halo games and I don't think anyone should have for that matter. Devs want to make Halo great again but 343 leadership/Microsoft prefer perpetual mediocrity and it's depressing.

Unsurpisingly, they were chasing the money without regard to sustainability. Honestly who thought it was a good idea to make a live service game with a tempoary contract workforce with an old engine which not many people know how to code in. Imagine if Rockstar fired all of their staff after GTA 6 and be suprised that GTA Online was struggling to develop content because none of the new staff understand the game engine as deeply or skillfully as the old workers.
I have massive sympathy and empathy for late 343 staff and the new Halo studio staff, they were doing their best despite terrible management. The profit motive always gets in the way of video game quality these days and I am sick of it, and I am absolutely sick of the fact that there is seemingly little escape from being constantly reminded that the rich get richer off the backs of the people actually doing all of the REAL work.

My brother and I are huge Halo fans. Starting from Halo CE all the way to Halo 4 and MCC, my brother and I have always played together. Split Screen and experienced the campaign together. And we loved all of it along with playing multiplayer together. We loved customizing our Spartans / Elites. Halo 5 was a bit of a mess, but my brother and I still had fun playing one at a time in addition to customizing our Spartans.
Halo Infinite is the 1st Halo game that broke this streak. The main issues were the lack of content, and the greedy paywall for customization / colors, and ranking. My brother was ready to play and said "how do I change the color for my Spartan." After me explaining to him, he's like "huh." He never touched the game for a long time. When I heard at firs 343 said they were going to add split screen to the campaign, I hyped my brother for us to play together. I refused to play the campaign for that long. When 343 said the promised of a simple Split Screen for Infinite being scrapped really killed any hype at all for both of us. My brother is more of casual / normal gamer, and he questioned why they can't add split screen. He did play the Forge for a bit, but stopped a month later. People think Halo 4, Halo 5, or MCC was the death of Halo. However, I truly believe Infinite is the death of Halo. It feels like the core studio along with leadership and Microsoft is the problem.

But I guess the money heads weren't happy with the revenue so they added, or rather removed, the good shit.

Im sorry to say it latenightgaming, but if 343i/Halo studios were a restaurant, no one would eat there.
First, what makes a restaurant and a AAA gaming studio comparable? The answer is, they are both businesses.
For a long time Halo Fans have asked for a steak, only being told "hey we dont like making steak, heres a vegan burger, like it, or you're entitled." If any restaurant ever told you that, would you eat there? Probably not.
So why is it that we, not only as fans, but paying loyal customers, getting treated in such a manor by the very people that require us to buy their product to make a living?
As long as a single dime is spent in halo infinite or halo for that matter, Halo studios should be trying their hardest to appese their customers and treat them with dignity and respect. They also need to hire people with true passion for what halo was, rather than being envious of what came before and having a large ego built off a franchise they didnt even create.
Imo their leadership lacks true passion, and thats why halo is failing. As long as they try to make shareholders happy on paper, nothing is gonna change.
Litterally those Modders putting things on steam workshop are doing the things we all would want to see out of a halo game. Like rejectedshotguns mods for example. Why are his mods so good? Its because he loves what he does. He has passion.
Speaking of mods, what happend to the digsite team was inexcusable. They could have paid digsite for working on halo 2 and 3 but chose not to. if you're asking where the money could have come from, why not make digsite content paid DLC for MCC so console and PC players can all enjoy it, that way, the community gets what they crave, MCC can recieve continued support, digsite and Microsoft make money and we are all happy.
If the goal is to make money like any businesses goal is, all they've been doing is the complete opposite and its a real shame.
The whole situation is a mess. And I WANT HALO TO DO WELL, I LOVE HALO. And i do hope the best for Halo studios, but so far, they only have been encouraging doubt.

In AAA games it's incredibly unlikely that mistakes are from individual developers because of the very nature of AAA, which is a lot of people working together, most of them specialized in one small part of development. Bad AAA games (Halo infinite cough cough) are more often than not a result of weak leadership and management roles.

The fanbase is entirely right to not accept slop, which the new weapon is. 343 can't get *1* animator to do a half-port half-polish job on the existing Halo 5 Fuel Rod gun's animations that we know work with Slipspace? (Blam IS Slipspace.)
Infinite's skeleton crew *HAS* at least an artist doing modelling and texture work, proven by the fact they're still selling new bundles so those aspects are entirely covered.
Since they're using Fuel Rod projectiles that are already in the game, thanks to the Hunters and Banshee bomb being present, the gameplay technical/balance aspects should be minor work to tweak.
Porting the Fuel Rod gun would be a small amount of work for the victory and good will it'd garner from the community and they can't even do that.

There were no plans, no mentions of plans, no stated goals, nothing. If Joe himself had said "yeah we're cooking up some really cool campaign DLC for y'all" and then canceled it, that's one thing. But that's not at all what happened

Everyone should be held to similar standards. "Next 10 years of halo" heavily implies that there will be some form of DLC in the future, it doesn't matter if it was said by Joe Staten or anyone else and it shouldn't matter if they aren't with the company anymore, they were there when it was said and it wasn't delivered on when infinite launched. I don't recall anyone trying to retract that statement before the game had come out, it seems to me that everybody just went with it. Maybe possibly because they knew it would help sales?

You have to stop with this "skeleton crew" argument as a defense of 343/Halo Studios. If they're going to lean on Infinite until the next game, they need to borrow people from the other current Halo projects to make content like this. For everyone involved (texture artist, 3d modeler, animator) it would realistically take less than a month to fully finish this task. None of the people involved require knowledge of the Slipspace engine so any relevant artists across any HS project could do this. The response to the new spnkr has been pretty universally negative so I hope HS reads that loud and clear that compromised solutions like this aren't appreciated and hurt the already low reputation of Halo and 343/HS

These people have lied to us so many times, overpriced their online stores to sap our wallets, ruined parts of the game lore with terrible rewrites and half-assed plot elements (Halo 5, to name one), and now they can't even be assed to give us a real fuel rod gun?
    A FUCKING FUELROD GUN?!!
Do these people honestly believe this is an acceptable standard for Halo? If the developers really think giving us an hour long stream of what essentially amounts to a company emails worth of content is an acceptable commitment for this community, then I really hope they pull their heads out their asses. The 'skeleton crew' is literally HIRED to update the game with content. Its their JOB, how is this so difficult?
I can only give them the benefit of the doubt so many times! Halo 4, Halo 5, the Master Chief Collection (initial release), the FUCKING REQ STORE!! Jesus Christ on a bike, what the hell kind of drug-induced fever dream am I living in!?
Either they give Halo to a new studio who can actually put in the effort (which this studio clearly does NOT do, and any attempts to defend this shitstorm after 10+ years of failure deserves a right hook) or they finally destroy themselves and take this empty shell of a franchise with them.

LNG, I think you are giving Halo Studios too much credit here. Now I admit the actual people working on the skeleton crew shouldn't get hate, but I feel like 343/Halo Studios just gave up halfway through development. They had like 7 years to develop this game and it was so unfinished that it made me feel like I was playing one of those early access survival crafting games on Steam that are abandoned after a year. The game had no theater mode, no forge, no co-op campaign, no split screen (which they promised), painting your armor a basic color required you buying a battlepass or skin bundle, there were only a handful of maps (half of them I personally didn't find enjoyable), the matchmaking playlists were barren with no variety even though they could have put in fan favorite game modes from past Halos, the campaign felt like a demo of what it should have been compared to the trailer with all of the different biomes and wildlife, Infinite was supposed to be their magnum opus that would last us years and it's a disappointing failure of a game that took 4 years post launch to be in a somewhat acceptable state. They had 20 years of Halo history, maps, weapons, game modes, to draw inspiration from and I feel like they used none of it. How did it end up this bad?
I feel like us fans were robbed of what could have been a game that heralded the start of a new golden age of Halo.

It’s not about “energy” it’s about cost and return,.
Of course the F2P game has resources to make skins-they’re gonna sell them.
A sandbox addition is free though and that’s a tough sell to stingy management who are moving on to the next game
And I already address why the “but a modder did it” stuff just doesn’t hold weight. A modder didn’t need to localize, playtest, work with UI/UX, etc etc
AAA studios have a development pipeline they operate under and all things must be developed through this pipeline. You can’t just go off on your own and “mod it in”

    • @peepsbates
      @peepsbates 6 дней назад +35

      @@LateNightHalo
The only additions to the pipeline a Fuel Rod Gun would add compared to a Fuel Rod SPNKR is getting *1* animator to work on it and there's a lazy way to ensure they have minimal work, too, which I can explain.
The Fuel Rod SPNKR is a separate weapon as opposed to a reskin, so all of the required pipeline work for a new weapon is going to have to be undertaken (Addition to maps/wall weapons, gamemode loadouts like fiesta, etc, etc.)
Modelling is going to be done for it. Texturing/Materials/Shaders, too. New SPNKR is getting that.
Gameplay programming/tweaks/testing is covered as it's a new weapon.
Balance testing/tweaks is covered as it's a new weapon.
UI/UX is covered as it's a new weapon.
All they need to do to make a Fuel Rod gun instead of the SPNKR if they're starved from a resource standpoint is put an animator working on just refining the Halo 5 animations. If they wanna get extra lazy, make it the battery powered Halo 1 version so no reload animation is required, just firing animations (Which you could repurpose from existing ones.)
That's an insanely minor ask for such a BIG win in terms of good will from the community and the fact that nobody sprung for that in the pipeline this Fuel Rod SPNKR had to go through to get to the new update is ridiculous.
Edit: Also, the community has been asking for weapon skins for non-UNSC weapons/vehicles since launch yet whoever is pulling the strings at 343 isn't smart enough to actually spring for that and push the MTX they want to push. It's crazy.

The game has a skeleton crew too, like you said, so it is not like the pipeline should care as much about quality, the testing would be fast-tracked. Localization? Not a big deal, the Fuel Rod has been a staple since CE, you can easily kitbash the older localization in. UI/UX? Simple, does it look close enough to what it was with other fuel rods? Good enough for the devs to add it.
We're used to this bad track record, so why not just have janky animations than a bad re-skin of an existing gun?

    • @Master_Beef
      @Master_Beef 5 дней назад +3

@@LateNightHalo I appreciate the reply. I’ll just say this, we both know this is an extremely low effort update on the studios part.
The game is profitable from the skins they sell, and all the stuff you listed that they had to work on to add a new weapon is literally their job description.
Sandbox additions being difficult to ‘sell’ to management is lame logic if a company is making a F2P game (their decision, not the community’s). It’d be like if you had a museum that was free entry but was subsidized by its gift shop. Maybe this could work, but not if they don’t have anything interesting on display or never add anything new.
The majority of the games content is free to the studio because of forgers making new maps and modes.
Effectively, we are in a situation where the studio made the scaffolding of a game (the gameplay is indeed great), they got in over their heads and bit off more than they could chew. Then they decided to scrap the whole thing and make a new game. (Again it was their decision to go live service/F2P) Now, they say “ohh dev is hard, we just don’t have the staff, it’s a skeleton crew”. All the while, they retain a workforce to consistently pump out MTX yet, they rely on forgers to make the bulk of the live service content for free.
      My issue is this,
The community keeps going through this cycle with 343 where, they make promises, they fail to deliver on them, they apologize, say wo is me and put in the bare minimum to appear as if they are “hard at work resolving the issues”, meanwhile they probably left one or two people with a mess and told them “have fun”, and we forgive and forget. Then they repeat the process.
This sets and further reinforces a bad precedent which is widely seen throughout the AAA industry.
The community and fans should stop giving in and supporting this. 343 is owned and operated by a company with a market cap of 3.08 Trillion. All excuses about them not having man power are completely irrelevant and self imposed. Especially after all the people they’ve fired and taken off the project. Not enough people realize 343i = halo studios = Microsoft
We all care about the game, we all love Halo as a franchise, and ultimately we all appreciate the people that bring it to life and create it. Unfortunately when the community accepts the bare minimum and makes excuses for the studio’s failures, all it does harm the very thing we all care about.

its been failure upon failure from the start where they marketed it with lies; then didn't deliver squat. including the FOMO-noFOMO-FOMO shift they keep doing... because the customer can't be gouged enough.
what didn't land was a 30/70 split on the stream between "the game" and "HCS". HCS does not matter; they literally removed the trick jumps outside of it.... so its nothing like it use to be back in the H3 days where you'd see something to try; now its practically worthless...

I can't even be angry, It's just indifference at this point. If they're not willing to put in the resources for a gun they already have a model for, why should I reinstall the game? Am I supposed to get excited for Assault? The shop? Why should I even consider playing the next title if I know they're not going to give it the polish it needs? I only pop up every now and again to see if there is anything that would get me back into playing it, but there isn't and won't be. We have had a total of ONE gun in three years, and that was just a DMR without a scope.

Ooo poor multinational game developing studio that has a multimillionare company behind, they are doing there very best sacratching every last dollar with the fomo battlepasses and adding so much stuff in the store at high prices using nostalgic bait such as the ugly redesigned dutch armor and the halo 3 odst magnum. Stop defending them man, even if it's not the developers fault you can't throw all the blame on a "toxic" community asking for something better

I can’t barely stand to look at what halo has become. Truly sickening. They’ve now introduced TIMED PREMIUM battle passes?? The only weapons they have introduced are reskins?? They still have the gall to sell $30 armour sets in the shop?? Absolutely disgusting.
I have to disagree with the fuel rod situation. The H5 fuel rod cannon has been in the files since the beginning. They’ve had the time and animators to introduce it. Even nowadays it wouldn’t be difficult for them to get a single animator to port this weapon over. They are large development studio backed by a one of the largest companies in the world. No excuses there.
The premium battle passes is an insane thing to introduce into a game which is so dry of content as Halo Infinite. The game is extremely shallow, even after years of development. Adding FOMO back is also a crazy thing to do. It really shows there is no change between 343 and Halo Studio.

I also have to disagree on your take about competitive halo. Competitive halo has been given a massive spotlight over the past two game entries. Far larger spotlight than the one on social game modes. Which shows in that it took 343 years to introduce social game modes like infection into their games. They prioritised competitive halo which has definitely hurt the games.

The battle pass expiring is just gonna give people less of a reason to reinstall. It certainly doesn't make me want to.

Fact of the matter is you can’t rebrand your whole company and have this be your first proper content to come out since. Besides a flashy trailer, this is our current view on halo studios. Off to a bad start so hard it’s giving Deja vu

Idk what these guys are on. They've been lied to about almost everything and they are STILL willing to gag on 343s schlong. How many more lies and mediocre bullshit must happen for people to stop giving these developers the benefits of a doubt.

i play like once every couple months during up to 2023 i was grinding and got excited for season 5 then all that hype gone but i have so much enjoyment playing other games like arma warframe devil may cry metro ninja gaiden etc it's not worth playing infinite really anymore halo would never get a W without a L i might like play the CE remake but honestly im done😭 playing mcc with the homies sometimes is better than every hour on infinite

For me it’s complicated. I really wanna see halo make a huge comeback and get the support it needs but even if infinite has its faults I still play it consistently and not because I want to grind for cosmetics (I’ve been happy with my armor since the first 2 months) but just because I enjoy the gameplay. It’s certainly not perfect but It would feel weird to call it bad if I’m alway having fun with it

Look man. I'm glad you're enjoying infinite for what it is but going into expiring battle passes and other scummy microtransaction bs, rebranding to halo studios or whatever and still having the same problematic people in charge when it was 343i that are still making the same shitty decisions, and switching to unreal engine does not bode well for the future of halo and fans are rightfully pissed off about it. Like you said people want to see Halo get a fat W but the people running it are making that an impossibly. Halo infinite had so much potential just for it to be a cash shop disguised as a video game and to make matters worse they SOMEHOW made a better forge than they made in Halo 5 which was already a phenomenal leap in giving console players a way to make content in their game, just for them to shut off main support for infinite and walk into the next halo title learning absolutely nothing. I feel for the devs that put blood, sweat, and tears into making the forge and designing cool shit like the grapple and skewer for the game but as long as 343i still has the same shitty leaders making decisions its not a good idea to support the company imo. That extends to AAA game studios as a whole but we're talking about halo rn.

Toxic= trash talking a corporate product.
Ya know if you walk into a McDonald’s and call the food garbage, the employee will shrug and say well it’s a McDonald’s.
If the game is being sabotaged by corporate, why do the game devs take such personal offense when the consumer points out what the devs themselves acknowledge to be a trash product? Why don’t they just shrug and say well duh, it’s a corporate product, just like the McDonald’s employee?
I’m just tired of this “Toxic” narrative. Like okay then stop trying to market and profit off people with your social media presence

I gave up on infinite back on the SoF operation when they clearly and obviously gutted season 6 in favor of selling more armor bundles in the store. At that point I thought "The monetization cannot get ANY worse." And here I am, proven wrong in the worst ways again. The FOMO is practically grabbing us by the groin with these new changes saying "Pay 10 dollars now or pay 80-200 later." Cool. The one justification I had for Infinite's monetization system just went out the window. Great job 343/HS. Along with the complete gutting of the Heatwave and Bulldog, neither weapon needed a nerf. I do not understand what they were expecting with this update. They've gone back on ANOTHER promise made before launch. Split Screen Co Op, Campaign DLC, No FOMO, etc. When they added Mark V for 20 dollars back in season 5 the writing was on the wall for me. "They're gonna keep doing it" And they kept doing it. Helioskrill, Achilles, two armor sets that required skill and prowess to EARN, now just locked behind a 20 dollar paywall, trashing the significance those armors had when you wore them. I saw the MA5K and went "They're gonna end up doing even worse than this" and they did. We already have a weapon that fills the weaker yet faster explosive weapon role that bounces, you wanna know what it's called? The Cindershot. There were a few good changes that would've made me come back to the game, if it wasn't so painfully obvious that they're doing below bare minimum, making the monetization worse and expecting anyone to have any praise for this game. I was let down at launch, I was let down at Season 5, I was let down for the last time at the SoF Operation, now I'm just watching the franchise I still am passionate about be drowned in the toilet. I was always optimistic about Halo....Not anymore.

Why should I care that Infinite's dev team is a skeleton crew? What happened to all that talk about a decade of support for Infinite? 343/Halo Studios/Microsoft or whatever name they go by now is just trying to squeeze out some pity from people along with squeezing their dollars out for overpriced skins and battlepasses.
