  • A Christian man argues in favour of killing animals because he believes God put them here for us to use. We discuss this during the Q&A following a speech I gave in Norway. Things get pretty heated...

Cruelty to animals is as if man did not love God ... there is something so dreadful, so satanic, in tormenting those who have never harmed us, and who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power.
    - Cardinal John Henry Newman

Young Wonderer All one can do is the best they can, and I would wager taking animals off the plate is a good start. You might not be able to move to another induatrialized country right away, but we can vote "No" with our dollar to violence and opression, and I think most would agree thats a start in the right direction. Capitalism IS savage and IS destroying us. I believe the word itself is actually dervived from the greek word "capita" which means "head of cattle", which was appropriately used in the jargon of the old days. So capitalism and agriculture are pretty fused as it is. .... If it makes money, it makes sense right??? as long as we advance industrially , no matter what the price, we should be greatful and thankful for our industrialized nation, right??? We are born as free no matter what government rules over us. Your argument is sad...

+Young Wonderer nothing that you've said changes anything, I'm saying its satanic because it is, because approximately one in ten cows goes down a processing line alive, that means they are dismembered and skinned fully conscious. Vegans don't claim to be perfectionists, vegans do the best they can where it is realistically possible, meat eaters don't do the best they can at all
"If this was the 1500s your argument wouldn't have a single leg to stand on" its not the 1500s, and its not the 70s either

Young Wonderer So everyone should just contribute to factory farming and not care? The planet's resources are being exploited to provide people with a flavor in their mouths and people like you want no one to care so you don't have to think about the morality of your consequences. Wow. There's a reason heart disease is the number one killer. Eventually people will have to wake up and see that their selfish choices are negatively affecting their health, the planet, and non human animals.

I think it's crazy that you still believe in a god that allows such cruelty to his creation. Surely a caring god would stop such madness. Oh, but he is mysterious...
"7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things." ~ Isaiah 45:7 King James Version (KJV)
God creates darkness and evil. Then he forms light and makes peace as a problem reaction solution... He creates the problem, humans react, then he has the solution.

Francois Dillinger Sure but if you begin attacking people personally, they are litterally personally offended. They won't listen to you. They will get angry and don't want to even think about what you say. Remember that most of us used to be as stupid/ignorant as them and we have to get them to think for themselves, not *force* our believes on them (you see what i did there?).

    • @simeoncarter3768
      @simeoncarter3768 7 лет назад

Jimmy and Fabian it sounds like you guys are both a couple of pussies and only know other pussies. No offense of course. If someone is so much of an idiot that they are unable to handle dissenting opinions that are not spoonfed to them, I don't care to waste my time on such filth. Nor is it likely that they have the mental capacity to actually change their mind on something they are so emotional about. It has nothing to do with attacking people personally. Just speaking truth to people that might not want to hear it. If someone takes it personally when you point out they are wrong to the point where they are unable to process it without handholding, they are not acting reasonably or thinking logically. As for people being unable to change their minds when spoken to without manners, that is projection on your part. Plenty of people have changed their minds or been convinced of things without being treated like idiotic children. Not everyone is a fragile little snowflake.

YOYOYO mynaem FFS. Intelligence doesn’t determine someone’s worth. It has no influence on whether that living being feels pain. If you apply that logic to people then I guess anyone who has a low IQ or has learning difficulties wouldn’t have as much right to their life as a person who doesn’t. It’s about the ability suffer. It isn’t anymore complicated than that. The arrogance of human beings constantly trying to separate themselves based on species, colour, gender, colonisation and so on is exactly why we have had such inequalities throughout existence. The mentality that we can do what the hell we like is a selfish egoic state of being and isn’t something to be proud of.

Truuuue. That was basically the dudes argument. "I want to kill, and God said every animal who is more voulnerable than me is placed before me to feast on"
      What unbelievable arrogance, right?
If there is a God, he will surely look apon those who lived in mercy, love, compassion and only goodness to all who we could choose to dominate and use for our selfish gains, and uplift them.
Those who contributed to the world with even more violence and suffering, just out of greed, probably wouldn't be as appretiated..
If you stand before someone who is smaller or weaker than you, and you can choose to either care for them and love them, or you can chose to selfishly dominate them for your personal gain - your choice pretty much determines your humanity.
A child and a peaceful grass-eating animal are the two most physically and emotionally voulnerable beings you can stand before. As the bigger person, we should choose to not abuse that position. That determines our humanity, I believe :)

F.I.S.H Paragraph 35. Food in the mode of purity promotes good physical and mental health. Such foods include (above all) fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses, grains, roots, stumps (e.g. pineapple), flowers (e.g. cauliflower), seeds, herbs and of course purified water (or milk in the case of infants). Milk is intended solely for consumption by infants of the same species. Cow’s milk is for baby cows, not adult humans. The logic is overwhelming.
Foods in the mode of passion promote indigestion and overly-excite the mind. Such foods are basically the same as above but with excessive amounts of oil, spices, salt and/or other condiments added. Most drugs such as caffeine, alcohol, black tea and narcotics (though hardly food) fall into this category.
Food in the mode of darkness cannot rightly be called food at all. Such offal is putrid, decayed, overcooked or the remnants of another’s meal. Unnecessarily killing and/or consuming animals is an abominable action. It is not natural for humans to put dead animals like sheep, cows, chicken and fish inside their mouths. Sheep and cows are food for carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers and wolves and fish is food for marine and semi-aquatic species. Do humans live in the ocean? Of course not! Then why is it necessary for us to go into the water to find our food? Is that sensible? Not at all.

It was definitely a process for me to get to this place and to see that we don't need to eat animals to be healthy. But now and even before I went vegan I just can't really imagine God up there happy about our ignorance to the pain and suffering of these precious animals. Humans being animals is a modern idea. That's where the disconnection exists. The scriptures don't seem to say man is an animal. In our modern era where everything is explained through and about the material realm, the only explanation for mankind is a material explanation. Anything divine has been rejected by our generation. Yet that rejection will ultimately eliminate the objective reasons for morality. Morality requires a standard beyond us, because we aren't perfectly moral and fail and fail to be that standard. God as the giver of morality gives all an objective basis of morality. If God is "dead" as Nietzsche put it, then humanity is floating in a river with no paddle or compass. We will just make up our morality without any objective foundation or purpose. Abortion of tens of millions of babies is an example of that.

The first time God gave humans permission to eat meat was after the great flood and the earth was covered in water. God gave permission to go kill and eat during hard times. But yet this guy just eats and never kills. We Christian forget that in Bible times, their was no guns or mass farming of animals. Another Christian who has not actually read the Bible properly. If he had then he would know that it teaches that God's original intent for man was to eat a vegan diet. Yes, man is given dominion (rule = responsibility), but in the very next verse it reveals that dominion was only to be held in conjunction with a plant based diet. This is chapter one of the Bible, how can Christians not know this basic stuff? Granted the Bible later goes on to give permission for humans to kill animals for food, after the flood, but no where in the Bible does it ever suggest that animals were created for mans use.

Yes, we are supposed to be stewards over the earth. That means taking care of it. Using resources responsibly and sustainably, having compassion for every living thing. It doesn't mean raping, pillaging, destroying, abusing resources in order to indulge your appetite for flesh. We slowly commit suicide because we can't stop eating the stuff, and our bodies can't process it. That's what it has become. Leviticus is talking about what is clean and unclean to eat. Anything that is produced in the modern meat industry is inherently unclean. People shower every day and use hand sanitizer. Yet they eat meat. If you could see where that @#$% comes from, you wouldn't put it in your mouth! Ugh! I am a believer. In Yeheshua, the son of God, the Messiah. I do not take part in any religion. The Church is another institution that has become far removed from it's original form and purpose. The man in the crowd is saying but it's all about me what I need for my self. That right there goes against Christ teaching. You are supposed to put others needs before your own. The needs of third world people to feed their family. The need for our children to have a healthy planet to live on in the future. The animals have a right to life free from confinement and rampant deliberate cruelty, ending in a slow painful death. The question we need to ask ourselves is what would Jesus do? The Lord, my Lord would be vegan himself, I betcha. He'd be standing next to James saying Amen! Preach it brother! He would.

That was 12 years ago, since then I don't identify with any particular denomination anymore. I became a vegan 1 1/2 yrs ago and now find the self-serving attitude of most Christians regarding animals hard to accept. It's one thing when we are ignorant of what factory farming is like as we are conditioned to not ever think about it, but once we know I can't understand how some remain indifferent. I have to admit I didn't make all the changes overnight, it took for my worsening health to corner me and a friend who was doing a 30-day challenge to be the catalyst but my conscience had made me feel bad during the approximate 1 1/2 yrs after I saw just some clips about the abuse in "Food, Inc.", but I did reduce my consumption of meat significantly though.

Joel It's a fallen world. We just get further and further down the road away from God's original intent for us as time goes on. Did the Devil tempt Eve with a steak? No. Jesus lived 2000 years ago. They culled animals from their herds that lived with them. Outoors eating grass, being allowed to be a cow or a goat or whatever while it lived. They looked an animal in the eye as they slit it's throat. That is not how it is today. You buy your meat prepackaged at the store having no idea where it came from. Look up factory farming on You Tube. If you dare, it's hard to watch. Also I recommend "The Sustainability Scam: How Diet is Far more than "Personal Choice" by Lifting The Veil, Cullen Smith. I started this as a Daniel fast. You know eliminating certain foods. He ate no meat drank no wine and ate only simple foods. Your body is a temple. You should take care of it. Eating meat the way we do in modern times, all day every day is not healthy. I'm not faulting people who eat meat or saying it's sinful necessarily. It is for me, having researched this topic, Positively revolting.

James I commend you. Even though you almost dropped the F bomb (which made me have a little chuckle), and even though you were getting a bit feisty, you still kept your composure. You kept your cool. I would not have been able to keep it together like you did. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but his comments were driving me nuts listening to them. In the end you brought it home with a powerful ending statement and message. I just want to say a big thank you for everything you do for the animals and for us xx

You are right, animals does have feelings and have a family, i feel sorry for these animals. You inspired me James and keep spreading the message around the world

God had just flooded the entire earth and all there was left was all the animals on the boat. OBVIOUSLY God granted they could eat them because there was nothing for them to eat. Before the great flood every human was vegan. The oldest man to ever live was Methuselah and he followed a vegan diet. 969 years old.

    • @leftstanding

(Romans 14 : 2, 3) "One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him." No floods or food shortages; plenty of plant sources of food yet God still welcomes carnists.

How about the fact that in the garden of Eden, the original diet was a vegan diet. They didn't kill animals. That was NEVER God's intention. And way to use this verse out of context. Read the verses around it. Don't just choose what's convenient for you.

As a person of faith, I thoroughly appreciated your comments. Thank you, James, for making them. I do not feel that you lost it. There is nothing wrong with being passionate about life. You weren't disrespectful. You tried to engage in conversation - a very needful conversation. You did your best to be kind, and considerate. Thank you for that. You absolutely allowed him his own autonomy. That is incredibly respectful. However, I think that people of faith have a hard time with subjects like these because everything hinges on something else and to take away one piece risks unraveling it all.
The way the Bible was presented to this man caused him to believe that he was fulfilling his "Manifest Destiny", and to realize that it was something else, was a jagged pill for him to swallow. In that moment, he was realizing that if it was wrong for him to kill animals, then it was wrong for his parents and grandparents, etc. to do the same. He has most likely been raised to revere those people, and he was suddenly presented with an opportunity to indict them. That's a slippery slope for him because if his parents were wrong, then maybe everyone was wrong. Maybe they weren't so godly. Maybe they weren't the good, innocent people that his faith needed them to be. It was a difficult moment for him, but he needed the opportunity to reevaluate his worldview.
Thank you for giving him that moment and for doing it with as much patience as you could muster. Thank you for not dismissing him when others might have. Thank you for admitting your own imperfection and approaching the subject with humility. Really. Thank you... and don't stop sharing your message. Please, be encouraged that it is necessary.

Thanks James Aspey, as a Lacto only Vegan i will stop using dairy. Big fan of butter i convinced myself that i could buy some butter once every 3months, pretending my cow was treated fantastic like they should.
But you said a cow produces milk only when pregnant. And that would be once every 5 year max. i'm guessing. So that would be butter every 5 years not every 3 months.
So i stop dairy too. Thanks for opening my ears, eyes, heart and brain to this truth.
