  • In late July 1989, ESPN paid tribute to Tim Richmond as he lay dying in a Fort Lauderdale hospital. Stricken with AIDS and before the advent of RUclips, this was a way for the hospital staff to see Tim as a vibrant athlete full of life. His former crew chiefs Barry Dodson and Harry Hyde pay their respects to Tim. Richmond passed away three weeks later.
To explain his hospitalization, they mention a motorcycle crash Tim had in the spring of 1989 in which he suffered a concussion. "He couldn't get it cranked," fiend Bob Jones said. "He thought he'd try a tow and had a friend of his pull him with a cable," Jones said. "He didn't put a helmet on because he didn't intend to be riding the motorcycle." The clutch on the motorcycle popped as the car lurched forward, pitching Richmond onto the pavement. "He smacked his head on the street."

As soon as it came out it was HIV, NASCAR didn't say his name again for 20+ years. I'll never forget Tim or that fact.

Tim got around Pocono with such ease. It was a drivers track and he definitely owned it. It’s a travesty watching that disease consume my friend. He was so full of life. I remember his mom asking the team to move his microphone to the other side of his helmet. NASCAR did him dirty. What if will always be ringing in my head. So full of life, reduced to skin and bones. Watching Al go through his death and then losing his wife. Evelyn was Tim’s heartbeat, he loved his mother and she was right by his side. Gone way too soon... RIP

Jeff Gordon vs Dale Earnhardt vs Tim Richmond vs Davey Allison, along with drivers such as Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett and the Labonte brothers, during the 90s. That would probably have been the most competitive era in the history of NASCAR, even more so than what the mid to late 2000s was.

Back then HIV was a scary thing that the medical community didn't know anything about and it was something that nobody wanted to talk about. Unfortunately to this day there is still a lot of speculation over what actually took Tim Richmond's life although it was complications from HIV. That was over thirty years ago and things have changed a lot since then. I always thought Jerry punch was one of the best personalities in NASCAR Broadcasting
