Unlocking the ULTIMATE Realistic City Building Potential in Cities Skylines 2

  • We're continuing our expansion of the sort-of realistic north American-themed Riverview Metropolitan Area - this time with the implementation of MODS and Developer Mode! We start out developing a high-rise hotel, as per the decision of the Riverview City Council (you guys!) on our community page vote - and make heavy use of developer mode to make a public square next to it with recreational space. We then move to an inner-city district near the waterfront, upgrading a high-wealth area by plopping some truly beautiful turn-of-the-century New York-inspired condo buildings and creating a custom pavement path with trees! We finish off by creating a once again New York-inspired public housing project on the outskirts of New Chelsea (former Chestnut!). Hope you enjoy!

Chestnut heights would be a good name for the public housing. Nice nod to the old name of the area (in the story it could have been named before Chestnut was renamed). Plus they are almost chestnut in colour. Here in Scotland public housing blocks like that are often called something heights.

    • @rynoleroux8843

The demand for more housing and the noise of the high-way close by made the area unattractive to home owners and thus it was decided to turn the area into a public housing district. Chesnut heights is indeed the perfect name for the district IMO.

Also a nod to the auto generated name it could be called the "Bird Box" or "Bird House" by the locals because it, like many housing projects, houses people for life. And it being government housing there are many loud and mentally ill people living there, the birds.

This video is the first time actually seeing the developer tools in action, they're incredible! That just makes me even more excited for what is going to be possible with mods in this game. Also, is it just me or does the hotel have way too little parking? I think a hotel of that size would have way more than 10 parking lots, that's barely enough for the employees. I know it's kind of boring, but wouldn't it make sense for the rest of the lot to be primarily parking?

    • @Infrastructurist

In North American terms (especially if you want to take Queens/Brooklyn inspiration) the low-rent housing is referred to as "projects". As such the apartments at 42:00 would most likely be called "the projects" by those who live there like how the Queensbridge Buildings and similar low-cost areas are in real life. So an interesting name to tie these buildings to the river could be the Bluegill Projects.

  • @khalidalotaibi1072

    I have two suggestions.
The first suggestion is that the public housing district can be called “New Hope” or “Hope City” or just “Hope” to be cringey on purpose. Most politicians can’t relate to normal people’s struggles but give public projects stupid names or slogans like “Hope will guide us through our hardships.” To “inspire” people without actually being helpful.
The second suggestion is to place a hotel on the plot near the hotel. In my experience hotels tend to gather in close proximity to each other.

  • @mikkol3
    @mikkol3 8 месяцев назад +6

I think a possible name for the small expensive district could be "Dutch Quarter" referring maybe to the history of the neighbourhood and also inspired by the european/dutch style rowhouses that are located there

    • @mikkol3
      @mikkol3 8 месяцев назад

For example it could be that these could be the remenants of a dutch settlement from the past, or a neighborhood where a lot of dutch moved when migrating to america (and implementing their own architecture)

I grew up in NYC in one of those former Public Housing projects on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There were two projects that were basically the same neighborhood called Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town as a nod to Peter Stuyvesant and Peter Cooper, Stuyvesant the former Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam, and Cooper a famous NYC philanthropist.
I feel like the same of a famous person from Riverview's history, plus the word village or town afterwards would be a good idea for a name.

Don't know if you've found this yet, but you can pretty much disable all the limitations in the debug console, so it's basically like you get both road and prop anarchy, the game will just stop caring about those placement blockers, like the "on water" or "collision" things, can't remember exactly what it was called on the debug menu but im pretty sure you can just google it and find it, allows for some really in depth detailing work

I personally think that you should put a Vancouver-esque residential tower in the contruction plot. You could put a modern (but shorter) high-density commercial building, and then (using anarchy) you could put a modern glass residential tower inside of it. You probably should make the tower around 1/2 to 2/3 of the size of the hotel. Great video!

Feel free to change this story, but the new name for the Lower Eastside should be “Pizen Switch”. Here’s the back story…The district was settled by Irish immigrants, formerly nicknamed Whiskey Switch, due to being so close to the central train station and a local bar that was notorious for its whiskey but then quickly changed to “Pizen Switch” (irreverent nickname from back when that part of town was a transfer - or switch - stop; and the local whiskey was so bad that it was called "poison". "Poison" came out sounding like "pizen" because of local vernacular, and the name "Pizen Switch" just stuck.) The reason for the high prices might have something to do with crooked politicians and their dealings with the IRA, Irish Mob, and the Flanagan crime family. But we don’t talk about it. 🤐

When the public housing was planned and built between 1968 and 1973 no one cared of a name for the new quarter so it was simply referred to as the New Chelsea Housing Project. However shortly after the inhabitants started calling it “the Brick Wall” due to the appearance of its huge housing blocks.
When in the late 90s on anticipation of the new millennium the idea arose to rename the quarter a public vote for the name was held. The clear winner was “The Brick Wall”.
The name came into effect on 01/01/2000.

Huge building like that with 10 parking spots? Might as well have none. In north america we love our cars, so if there is any parking at all for that building it would be a parking garage. And for the public housing development, make it look shabby and call it Cabrini Green. Google the name, it had quite the scary history.

I absolutely love your work with the Cities Skylines games. You make this look so easy, and it's not, I've tried to emulate. I think it would be absolutely awesome if you did a collaboration with City Planner Plays. You two together would make an absolute masterpiece of a city.

Great episode as always! In terms of modes I highly recommend Extended Hotkeys. You will receive not only Anarchy Mode with Alt + A toggle (which works basically as in CS1) but also more convenient hotkeys when building with networks.

For Lower East Side, maybe name it the Historic Riverview district? Would help to explain the old style buildings *and* the high rent prices!

I think the neighborhood (Birdsong Glade) should be called North Oak. It story can be that before the freeway this area was a thriving business corridor and homes with the Main Street being called Oak street. Then the freeway was built destroying their homes and businesses and were giving housing on the north side of the Oak street which is now the freeway.

These props are so cool. It makes absolutely no sense to me that they’re not included in the vanilla base game, without using Dev Mode.

You could call a public housing area Twin Oaks Valley as many north american cities have places like that

You can place the parking lot decals next to each other if you check "bypass validation results" in the dev mode options.
This also makes it much easier to do quays since the game won't be nagging you about building roads on water, and lets you build stuff on top of other assets which is useful for places like the huge empty spot in the airport asset.
    It's basically like road/prop anarchy from CS1.

As it is a North American city you should definitely make something like Skid Row all with tents along the road, trash cans burning and public amenities such as clean needle projects distributed from trailers. Should be somewhere downtown though.

neat, good to see the detailing is back in the game. i hope you continue the series and continue to show all the vanilla gameplay though, i'd like to see a full paythrought of the game, unlock all the factories and showcase all the game mechanics.

Near the hotel along the railway tracks a parking garage would make sense instead of the high density housing. Or an office building.

‘Garden Park’ is a good name for ‘lower Eastside’ taking from the “garden districts” many U.S cities have as well as the beautiful park behind the apartments & homes makes it a great fit for the name. 😊
