Walking with Monks: My 5-day Buddhist Monastery Stay in Sri Lanka

- End of October 2022, I stayed in a remote Buddhist forest monastery, on the east coast of Sri Lanka. It was priceless. I spent most of my days mindful walking with the forest-dwelling monks until I finally realized that this was not just a regular monastery but more like a meditation cave retreat.
You'll get to see the stunning natural surroundings of the monastery, including the caves or kutis where the monks spend most of their time in isolation.
This was a radical change of routine. I had spent the previous five months surfing in Arugam Bay. But the season was almost over and I was injured, so it was time for a change. The monastery is about a 45-minute drive from Arugam Bay. Unfortunately, I can't share the name or the exact location of the monastery because the monks treasure their isolation, but it is not difficult to find.

"Budu Saranai !" = it means "May the blessings of the Lord Buddha be with you!".
"Teruwan Saranai !" = it means "May the blessings of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha be with you!".

I think Budu saranai means “ may you seek Buddha’s refuge”
Teruvan means triple gems, that 3 gems same as above explained.

I stayed at this monastery about 10 years back with Bhante Guttasila, it looks like they have done some good changes & more organized more cleaner. There was an American monk living in the Kuti you were given. That Bhante told me of a KALUPUTHA - BLACKSON (a Black bear who visited him at night) Metta Theruwan saranai

That place is absolutely gorgeous and looks so peaceful
This monastery is belong to my village. I was born in that village call as panama (not the African city its in Sri Lanka). but I haven't lucky enough to see full area of this monastery which call as "Kudumbigala". I like this much peaceful.

I remember going to a monastery closer to Arugambay, somewhat like this. (It was near Panama, don’t know if it is the same place) with many monks in meditation hidden in caves and among trees. Took me right right. Thank you for sharing this with us.
