    When fountain pens stop writing the noblest thing to do is wipe the top of the nib with a tissue. This will pull the ink into the tip. I teach a fountain pen class here in San Francisco. I teach urban sketchers how to use, fill, troubleshoot and have fun with the huge variety of fountain pens. The preppy and sailor Fude are two of my favorites! Looks like you figured it out..

      Thanks for the tips, I am so happy to hear that you like the Preppy and Sailor Fude, coming from a professional that is good news.

      Yes, that is the gentle and good way to get the pen to restart writing. We see other reviewers hitting the page with the tip of the nib, which seems it can damage the pen.
      With a converter, which can be purchased separately from Sailor, it is easy to restart ink flow by pushing it through the converter screw.

    I really like the bleeding effect on the hairdryer. Preppy - smooth, Fude = loose. Thanks for the upload. Been looking at this particular Fude and have decided to buy it 👍🏼👊🏼

    I have both the Sailor fude de mannen pens, they give different results. I love them and think they are particularly suited to larger looser drawing, they are ink guzzlers though! You get used to using it quite quickly. I like that they are not scribbling pens and I have to slow down a bit and be a little more conscious of what I am doing and of how I make marks. They are also great for quickly greeting inked areas using various hatching techniques, just quick and loose so the result is more characterful than other fountain pens.

    • @jannahlyon
      @jannahlyon  3 года назад

      Yeah, I did notice rather they release a lot of ink, I love it but the cartridges do go fast! I also like that you do tend to draw with more intention, I think I would like to try out a parallel pen next, I am thinking they may be harder to handle though. Thanks for watching 💕

      Lindy Ashford: Does the pen only use their own cartridges or do they have refillable cartridges? Thank you.

    • @lindyashford7744
      @lindyashford7744 2 года назад +2

      @@larryglatt2548 they come with 2 Sailor cartridges and you can get packs of 12 in several colours. You can also use them with a converter and fountain pen inks. They are quite ink hungry as they can do such wide strokes. Thanks for reminding me about these they are my favourite drawing pens but I have moved house and need to dig them out! I do think they are very good value. If you want thin expressive lines you can also turn them so the nib is the other way and use them with the tip the ‘wrong way up’. Absolutely great for strong drawing, the sailor unusual do not dry waterproof most FB inks do not. So can also be used for a wash effect too.

      @@lindyashford7744 🤩Thank you for your quick informative response. Although I have 2 other Fude pens I will be ordering the Sailor 40 degree pen. I use Platinum Carbon ink, will that be ok?

    • @lindyashford7744
      @lindyashford7744 2 года назад +1

      @@larryglatt2548 I would check it out by reading some reviews where Carbon ink is concerned. I have the platinum drawing pens they are great. But I am not sure how well the ink does in the Sailor pens. The SketchInk from Roerher and Klinger or Noodlers waterproof for fountain pens would be good. If you take care of your pens and empty them regularly I think they should be ok.

    This pen looks amazing and very versatile. The bent nib looks like it won’t catch as easily as a regular nib.

    • @jannahlyon
      @jannahlyon  3 года назад

      Yeah, it is really nice and smooth! It is not as silky as the normal fine nib on my Platinum Preppy, you can feel it grab a little bit, but no skipping or catching.

    Omg it was bugging me that you started off with a really Aussie accent and the American creeped in 😂 thanks for sharing your experience with this pen! I'm looking forward to finding more ways to use mine 😊

    • @jannahlyon
      @jannahlyon  6 месяцев назад +2

      Ha, I bug myself with that sometimes too! I grew up in Australia, but have been living in California for over 20 years now, so the accent comes and goes - it is not a conscious thing, so i dont really have control over it. Accents are so weird though, if I talk to my parents back in OZ I go straight back into it strong, and then it kinda lingers for a little while after that. My hubby and kids all have American accents so it is hard for it not to wear off on me :) Although I have trained my kids to call sweaters, "jumpers" and they like Vegemite, so, WIN!

    • @jannahlyon
      @jannahlyon  2 года назад +3

      The Sailor Fude De Mannen requires the proprietary Sailor cartridges (you can refill the ones that come with it when empty with any bottle ink you want by flushing them out and refilling with a blunt syringe), or you can also buy a Sailor Standard Fountain Pen Converter and use any bottled ink you want too :) As for the painting, it is just wet on dry technique using watercolors (offscreen) and a water brush - super fast and expressive :)

    I'm right handed but you're kind of going against the normal flow of a pen. Turn it around so that the brass top part is facing up more. I'm not explaining it very well. With a regular nib ink pen the nib would be used with the main brass part facing up where you could even rest your index finger on it. You sort of it have it rotated the opposite way if that makes sense.
