This lens will be released at the end of this month. But Viltrox just gave me the OK to publish this review before the official release.
It's been for sale at B&H for at least a week already. I've got my copy a few days ago.
Interesting! I don't understand why it's on sale before it's released
Viltrox are doing something that we never thought would become true.. reliable AF lenses with professional-grade IQ for phenomenally cheap prices.. I believe they call this ultra-cheap lineup "Air"? Anyway, as a Fujifilm photographer, I'm grateful that they included the X-Mount in their production line (56mm f1.7). Thank you Richard for this amazing review! God bless ✝🤍
Glorious 🏆👏 I was about to buy the Sony 40mm. I think I'll wait for this.
Thanks for watching Sean! This is an attractive budget alternative compare to the Sony 40mm
Sony is definitely better, but Viltrox is just $158.
I bought the 20mm f/2.8 and love it. This one looks good. but the Nikkor 40mm f/2 is tempting too. However i like that this lens has a metal lens mount. Really hate the plastic lens mount on the Nikkor.
mount is kinda disappointing but the Nikkor is weather sealed tho.
This seems like a great all-arounder prime and I really like 40mm on full frame. But I want a faster max aperture and will stick with looking for a good used copy of the Nikon instead.
Viltrox also has a 35mm f/1.8 Z you can consider :)
looking for an other compact lens pare with my 20 F2.8, I have nikon 40 f2 but very disappoint the corner sharpness and build , this lens look very nice option
Is the lens hood the same as the one included with viltrox's budget 56mm and 20mm? They look almost identical, and the hood having clearance for a FF 20mm FoV would explain why it's so short for a 56mm APS-C lens
Good question! I will check and let you know
The hood is very small for 40mm lens, it does nothing to block stray light, and this lens flares like crazy.
I just checked, yes it is the exact same hood for these three lenses!
I agree, with the Nikon being available at a low price why go for this budget option. I feel the risk of a firmware update rendering it useless isn't worth the small savings. Maybe in a year or two if it pops up used I'd be interested but in the meantime I'm waiting - will use the megadap to adapt the Tamron 45...
thanks for watching Paul and sharing your thoughts!
Nikon 40/2 is a soft, low contrast lens with double-gauss design that shows a lot of spherical aberrations. Viltrox is a more complex optically, it;s a lot sharper with better contrast and brighter colors. The downside is busy bokeh in some cases and bad flare control.
Is the autofocus for video is good ?
I think It is acceptable
Looking forward to Viltrox 16mm/1.8 and Sigma 500/5.6 Pf for Z mount!!!!
But they ever happen???
Viltrox 16mm 1.8 Z is coming VERY SOON. Unfortunately i won't be reviewing that because of a few other reviews I already scheduled but yes it should be released very soon. Regarding Sigma 500 5.6 for Z, i'm not sure. I haven't heard anything about it
@@TheRealRichardWong What’s the price of Viltrox 16/1.8? Thinking of using it for astrophotography.
Not sure, i wasn't told the price, but it's likely to be the almost the same as the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 for Sony
I have already the Nikon Z 40 F2.0
Enjoy your Nikkor 40mm
The Z 40mm f2 is better than this just about every aspect... Unless they fix the auto distortion correction issue this lens is gonna be a no for most Nikon Z camera owners.
How do you know Nikon 40/2 is better? Since I have both lenses I can tell you Viltrox is definitely sharper with better contrast and colors.
Regarding distortions, I see none, it's a very well corrected lens, but I'm always shooting raw.
It's not, the Nikon one was way softer than Viltrox.
I have the Nikon 40/2. It's super sharp at regular distance on a DX camera. In camera corrections work almost perfectly in fixing any shape distortions. There's a well known issue of being soft at minimal distance, but who does this most of the time on a DX camera with the 40/2?
@@Sam-jg5zv hallucinating 😂
Auto distortion corrections are an issue with previous Viltrox lenses, their AF 35mm f/1.8 Z also has this issue.
