Totally agree. I love my a7cr, my 28-200, and the 20mm. I was surprised at how much I used it on my cruise. I dont shoot a lot of wide at home and didn't want a lot of money tied up. Fantastic value and no wasted space.
I have just ordered this lens. I don’t very often shoot wide as a wildlife photographer, so got the Vitrox mainly because it is so small and light in my bag so I can carry “just in case”
Looking forward to seeing what the Viltrox 40mm is like. I prefer 35 or 40mm for general travel etc. I own the Sony 20mm 1.8 G and it's great but too wide for a lot of shots, imho.
I have several Fuji X bodies, the most recent being the S10. I often shoot wide, including larger family groups (if people will remain still- this does not occur all that often) and landscapes. Some time ago, I purchased the Fuji 27 1.8 and had been very pleased with this focal length, mainly for wider type shots. Viltrox has released and you have reviewed the excellent 27 1.2. This is clearly a different type of lens in that it is , as it needs to be to obtain that fast aperture, much larger and heavier, also, it is justifiably significantly more expensive than this optic. How do the 2 compare, at least in the Fuji X body range?
The 27mm is more consistently sharp, but is obviously much larger and heavier. I would like to see the 20mm released as an X-mount lens, as I think it would work fine as an APS-C lens and you would eliminate the center/corner focus issue I describe as the full frame corners would be cropped off.
Going to New Zealand for a few weeks in October, i need a cheap wide lens thats good to travel with, this seems perfect. Ill use it on my Sony A6000 but im looking to upgrade to full frame so at least ill have an extra lens in the bag when i make that jump!
It's great for street too. I have this one, the cheapo 40/2 Nikon released and recently - the new (DX) 56/1.7 Viltrox. Full set, that gives me 20, 40 and 85 and the combined size is about as big as one FF lens was 15 years ago. All that for like 600 (inflated) dollars in total. We live in the times of wonder in terms of photo gear :)
Dustin, Thanks SO much for this excellent approach and honest comments. I really enjoyed it so much that I purchased one of these dinky lenses yesterday!!!! And I still have an adapted Vivitar Series1 19-35mm too but this just gives me a few AF options as/when required. Many Thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you for an excellent review ,encouraged by your original review I buyed this lens for my Sony a7C ll ,I have also Nikon Z system and I preordered same lens for nikon too.I am a bird photographer and this inexpensive lens is very good for occasional landscape and travel shots. Very easy to keep always on bag. Cheers ,Erkki from Finland
Fantastic video, Dustin. The Viltrox looks like a winner. I'm just hoping that Sony adds another card slot to the A7CR in the next version. I'm still looking for that sweet spot that's smaller than the A7iii and packed with more resolution.
I agree on everything here but call a 20mm a classical wide lens. It's not, it's becoming classical because of vloggers, but in photography the 24mm is still the classical wide lens. I love this lens, I'm using it as a 30mm on a Sony A6000 but I'm planning to go full frame soon (that's why i bought it). Right now (30mm) I'm using it for street, it will become my landscape lens when I go full frame (too wide for strret at least for me, I prefer something closer to 28mm). Great review BTW.
@@DustinAbbottTWI were I not to live in England and need weather sealing on everything, you’d have made my bank account very happy! Also, I appreciate your taking the time to reply, thank you.
hi guys, what about the 24g instead? Bought it used (like new) for 250€ (half the price of a brand new) and just can't decide which one I should keep... viltrox or sony?
Another reason to just ignore Canon cameras. Lenses like these is what could make me want to switch away from my M43 travel setup. Would love a Z6ii with this and a 24-120mm f/4. Perfect travel combo, although a little short at 120mm considering Olympus makes a 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro (24-200mm with image stabilization) that's smaller, lighter and produces sharper images.
EF is almost certainly not going to happen, as this is a mirrorless design (as is pretty much everything, at this point). RF is an outside possibility, but it will take Canon opening up the mount to full frame third party development.

That's a perfect case use for the lens.
Does this work with Sony Catalyst Browse? Thanks
Love this lens. Light, sharp, great colors, and easy to use. Fast focusing on my z7II.
Sweet!
Thanks! Just bought it for my Z with your code. I love it! Perfect little companion for my Zf for upcoming trips.
Enjoy! It's a great little lens.

love the video and your work. I am planning on getting the same combo with the A7CR!
Good choice! I think you'll enjoy this lightweight wide angle lens. It just went into my bag for a trip later today to Myrtle Beach.
I just got it for my Nikon z mount and I have been very impressed with it so far
Awesome. Enjoy.
Perfect review Dustin. I have the A7CR and found the samyang 18mm not very sharp on the 61mp sensor. Just ordered the viltrox!
Enjoy!
Thank you! Best review of this lens I´ve found.
My pleasure.

I would love to see that, too, and I think its possible for sure.
Dustin what lens do you think are better. This Viltrox 20mm or the Sirui 23mm f1.2?
the background blur is much better on the 1.2 than on the 2.8, but is it worth buying the sirui 23mm or this viltrox 20mm?
I'd personally go with the Viltrox. It is full frame, for one, whereas the 23mm isn't. It's compact, lightweight, and sharp.
Hello, can I use this lens for real estate photography, and is it optimized for sony a6700?
Probably a bit late, but this on a6700 might be a little tight for real estate

Thanks for the feedback. What's happening is that because of extremely high resolution, wider is often better, as it is easy to crop in.
Very nice lens and photos! Tucson area by chance?
Mostly Scottsdale and Fountain Hills
@dustin - So a totally different price point but how does it compare to the Sony 20g?
The Sony is a little more consistently sharp and has more features, but also costs over 5x as much.

Do you prefer this or the Viltrox 18 2.8?
Hmmm, I’m not sure there is a Viltrox 18mm F2.8. Are you referring to the Samyang?
@@DustinAbbottTWI sorry I meant Samyang.
Have you tried it for milkyway and startrails ?
I do have the former covered in my original review.
Never mind mine is on the way 😅 i will try this weekends
Excellent. I will buy it to my A7Cll😜
Enjoy it
It looks competitive to the equally compact Tamron 20/2.8.
Yes, though without the absolutely HUGE barrel distortion of the Tamron, and with a much smoother/quieter focus motor.
Can I use this lens for astrophotography ??
Yes. F2.8 isn't optimally bright for astro, but not bad.
Does this work with Sony Catalyst Browse? Thanks
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the software and can't comment.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you
Great review as before
Thanks
I suspect that on a crop-sensor camera this lens will perform extremely well.

Yes, it's a shame that RF shooters are missing out on all of these great reasonably priced third party lenses.
Does anyone use this lens for Astro?
I did test for that, and the lens works fine
Hiç bir yerde bu lensle ilgili astrofotoğraf özelinde bir test sonucuna ulaşamadım, eğer bu çalışmanızı paylaşırsanız memnuniyet duyarım.
Great review. going yet again to the Turkish coastal ruins so think i will get one to snap on for closer shots.
Enjoy.
For the algo; thanks for sharing
Thank you :)
Touch wood, I hope they release a version of this lens in Canon EF mount......
