After Burner is one of Sega's most iconic coin-ops of all time and, unsurprisingly, Sega brought it, and a slew of their other best IPs to the Sega Genesis on release.
I have to say, the conversion is really impressive, far more so than I'd have imagined. Given the relatively meagre hardware of the console compared to the arcade board, this is as good a port as you could have wished for.
Perhaps the most significant, as well as potentially game-breaking change the developers implemented was the control scheme. Fortunately, the transition from the arcade's flightstick and throttle to Genesis d-pad works well, and there's even the option to invert the controls for those who prefer a more traditional flight experience. The plane's cannons shoot automatically by default, which leaves the player to get on with the business of locking missiles and performing evasive manoeuvres.
Although gamers wanting an arcade-perfect recreation of the game would have to wait for the Sega Saturn release, the Genesis release is a great effort. It completely trounces the 8-bit and 16-bit home computer ports many of us played back in the day, and was clear demonstration for the console's future potential.
