@@kevinsaviro2708 I actually stopped watching the remakes after Mulan bummed me out. But Little Mermaid was a pretty adaptation that stayed faithful to the original movie.
This movie was surprisingly decent. If they’re gonna continue making these remakes, I hope we stay at the level of this and The Jungle Book and not fall down to Mulan and Lion King levels ever again
I have refused to watch Mulan (because I found out it wasn’t a musical and I was appalled) and Lion King cause I just didn’t want to. I wanted to watch this to support Halle and I’m glad I did. It was great!
I hope you guys actually watch Mulan though, I really liked it. I haven't watched the lion King but in all honestly, I think the live actions thus far are really very good. I hope you give it a chance, not to mention jet li was in Mulan!
Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Jessica were the best parts of the movie, with the latter only receiving a minimal of screentime. It was quite a bit better than I expected, and Halle's vocals were fantastic.
I really enjoyed the stuff they did with Eric. Other than that everything was pretty par for the course, nothing too bad but nothing too new. However the casting of Javier Bardem as Triton really threw me off, I kept expecting him to whip out a quarter and a silenced shotgun. Still, overall I liked it. 6.5/10
Was this better then the original? NO! But Is it a fun watch, ABSOLUTELY. cutting "Le Poison" from the live action was almost a deal breaker for me that is until I Halley Started singing. My GOD! I could listen to her sing all day long.
I remember folks saying that this is the method Disney should have in their heads: create live-action remakes for animated films that didn't do well in the box office. It was on that path w/ the remake of Pete's Dragon.
HALLE. BAILEY. She really is the only reason to watch the live action TLM. Her voice gave me chills several times throughout the movie, just the amount of emotions she can deliver with her voice is outstanding. Also love the change they made between Ariel and Eric, they bonded over their passion to explore the unknown rather than just falling in love because they find each other attractive.
The Little mermaid is about being a young person, stuck in an environment that feels stifling. I think that is relatable to many young people, but particularly to anyone who grew up in a house that was toxic, and for any young queer people whose family were not supportive. I don’t think people understand how important this movie is to so many people. And making her black makes the story that much better, not only do little black girls get representation (which they deserve to have) but it adds another layer to the story.
If they do Atlantis, they should make it a TV show. The cast is so large and quirky, and the story is kind of complicated in a way that doesn't lend itself to being condensed.
Your Hamilton references were very smooth. Always appreciate your reviews! Editing to add: the original movie's ending is because of Die Hard. In the original DVD commentary, one of the writers said they originally had Ariel save Eric and defeat Ursula. But then an exec saw Die Hard and said he wanted the ending to "be like Die Hard". That's the reason Eric runs the ship into Ursula.
I missed the whole scene where she transforms in the ocean and walks out with the sparkly dress and the wedding scene (as well as the line Ursula says “my little poopsies” haha) I missed those costumes! I also missed the pomp and circumstance of introducing Triton’s daughters! Overall not a bad remake and Halle was beautiful! She rocked it!
As someone who loved the original Little Mermaid I absolutely adored the new version and thought the changes they made to the live action remake, for the most part it enhanced it. But saying this there were a few things that could have been improved if your going to sit and nitpick every detail about this movie. I know the ocean coloring was a concern ( not vibrant enough in certain scenes) I'm not exactly sure why Disney made the choice they did with that but every realistic documentary about the ocean I've ever seen looks exactly like they portrayed. I think Scuttles was the best animated update to the movie. Flounder and Sébastien eyes seemed off and maybe they could have improved that but realistic how cute can you make a crab and a fish without moving away from the realistic side of these sea creatures. All the songs were great and I didn't hate any of the ones being so heavily criticized. I thought Scuttle Butt was just as entertaining as the Peaches 🍑 peaches song . Aquafina killed as someone who is a non singer. In my opinion what makes a good remake is how many times you will go back and rewatch it. Junglebook and Cinderella I've watched several times and I'm sure I will rewatch the Little Mermaid many times over once it's out on streaming.
This live-action might be better than the original🤣. You actually fall in love with the relationship between Eric and Ariel and don't get me started with the star constellation scene where she uses Aries to hint at her name. BEST LIVE ACTION COUPLE.
Her name is pronounced Halle like Halle Berry not Hailey. Also, the hair part is true. As a cosplayer, it is so hard to lock down the look of her hair in order to recreate it. The 3 different looks are killing me. lol
I was finally able to watch it yesterday after it came out on disney + and i really enjoyed it. The little Mermaid, alongside Atlantis and Hercules is up there with my favorite movies
I actually like the new songs more then Under the Sea which is quite sad as that was the originally the best song along with Part of your World. It wasn’t enough of like a “party” song for lack of better words it was kind of subdued😂 Obv the original isn’t a party song but it makes you want to dance.
Or people wanted them to stay true to the original. It doesn't matter to me really, but I can only imagine the hate if they chose a white girl to play princess and the frog. Kind of like Scarlett having to apologize for playing a Japanese robot.
@@parisinthe30sx princess and the frog has race as a central theme (based on a REAL person)....little mermaid is a remake of an already loose adaptation.

10:19 don’t do Atlantis. Stop doing live action’s how about we get a release of treasure planet with the advertisement it deserved, but it didn’t get I would love to go to the theaters and see the cartoon again. They can do it as an anniversary thing.
I can hear the complaints calling it more of an unnecessary rehash than the live-action film. Pokémon did this with redoing the first film in CGI. It was alright, but it felt like a waste.
It seems to be that the reason we are not getting high quality acting or at least performances that are convincing from actors in these remakes might be due to the fact for the most part the actors and actresses are being chosen based on how famous they are and once get the part, the directors are not really asking them to do their best when performing and just saying lines is good enough. The actress that played Belle in the live action Beauty and the Beast cannot sing. Why did she get the part if she is required to sing? The originals were musicals and by being so they required Broadway actors or actors with experience in theater and could also sing. As seen in footage from behind the scenes of the making of the originals, the actors were not live on stage while either singing or saying lines, but while recording their lines or songs they would put all their talent and theater experience in expressing thoughts and emotions as if they were performing to a live audience. That included the facial expressions that the animators incorporated into the way they drew each character and made them come to life on the screen, each in its own unique way. So imo having a cast made up of Broadway actors with some training in acting behind the camera, since theater acting(more dramatic) in some ways is different from acting for TV or cinema would solve the issues with the acting in the case of the actress playing Ariel, for example. As many mentioned, she is able to express the character’s thoughts and feelings in words while singing but not so much while acting and singing, as it is obvious in “ Part of Your World.” There are parts in which she places a stress on words or sentences to express emotions like frustration , excitement but her facial expressions and gestures do not show it. Again, it is not the actress’s fault, Disney should have had her be trained by a Broadway musical/acting coach. Nevertheless, regardless of its flaws, which include changes, additions, to the plot, story as well as the changes to the original musical numbers and the visuals in those specific scenes, this is the first Disney remake in my opinion, that if watched with an open mind, not thinking about the original you can actually enjoy. By the way Halle Bailey should do Broadway musicals. “ She has the most beautiful voice” as Sebastian said in the original about Ariel.
Yup, gone are the days of triple threats because nowadays NAMES get people in the seats and then they fix up whatever’s missing during production. Can’t dance? We’ll CGI it in and use a body double. Can’t sing? We’ll voice over the singing parts. Can’t act? We’ll call critics haters and racists.
Honestly if Disney just left the animated golden era alone and made the Villian prequels all live action, race wouldn't be that big of an issue. And Disney could have opened a new golden era of CGI and anti hero story telling. But now we have these mediocre remakes that are wasting a lot of talented artists.
@@ronnielee1009 based on the discussions that I've listened too about Little Mermaid alot of people grew up and adored the original Ariel and it rubbed them the wrong way that she got race bent. It's less about the race but changing a childhood favourite drastically to appease a certain crowd. Brandy played the Cinderella before but it didn't get hate from the masses cause it wasn't the Cinderella from Disney. It was its own thing. If Merida's live action was race bent into a Greek princess most people would be so against that change even if she was white passing as we loved her as a Scottish princess. Disney is free to go all out on the inclusivity if they continue with their Villian prequel live actions route cause it's a whole new thing. They could have race bent Ursula, Hades, Meg and the whole cast. Most people won't care cause it's not rewriting a childhood darling. And lastly if Disney is trying to promote inclusivity why not just make and promote a live action of Princess Kida from Atlantis? Everyone grew up with her, a dark skinned bad ass princess.
@@Lime1958 this is an interesting perspective. I highly doubt Merida would ever be changed to a Greek story. Also Greek/Scottish arent races, they are nationalies, so...That doesnt really make sense and isnt even comparable to what happened with the little mermaid remake. Meg is a beloved character, and hercules too. Im certain people would be upset if they were race bent. People tend to care less when VILLAINS are race bent because they dont mind people of color being villains, so long as they aren't the beloved heroes. Also, its a shame people still claim that Halle was used to appease the audience. She literally auditioned and blew the casting director away. She was the best for the role.
@@ronnielee1009 Because peopels main issues with the race thign has nothing to do with race. Its about fking around with established characters who have looked and been a certain way for decades. No one would care and would probably prefer it if they made new stories with new characters for everyone under the sun. Them race bending popular established characters is just a corporate and lazy way to represent people but they arent really representing anything. People are just getting sloppy seconds. If they were truly representing people with these changes the character would change to reflect that, the story would change. But we dont we just get a different skintone character with nothing but surface level changes. Its also insulting because they usually use every racial stereotype you can think of when they do this stuff lol.

I was scared after seeing Peter Pan and Wendy but I was well familiar with Halle's talents so I knew she would do the best with what she got. I have not yet seen the movie, but my daughter took my granddaughter to see it and other than the underwater scenery being too dark at time my daughter was impressed with the movie. I look forward to seeing it once it streams on Disney+. I was already aware of the talents of the Bailey sisters as a duo but was blown away when I actually got to hear the whole rendition of part of your world song by Halle. I was and am a big fan of Grownish both sisters starred on this sitcom (before Disney came to call Halle, I was hoping she would comeback after shooting completed), Halle character was always quiet, reserved but upfront and seen interview with the sisters during their interview over the cover song Warrior from A Wrinkle in Time and Halle present herself the same way. I might just squeeze a little tighter on the budget and hope to muster going to the movie alone and the expense, so I can support at the theater and see on a big screen. I have seen a lot of bad reviews by critics' videos on RUclips but what they never have done is actually attack her acting and singing abilities for the part but address like the Scuttle butt song while having her picture as Ariel on screen. Or why did they need to do a remake and no need to see it because it just like the cartoon and in the same breath they go why did they do some changes. Someone confuse and it not me. So as we all know the haters going to hate. I am personally over anymore live remakes reimagine or not but would love to see some fresh stories from Disney, go to the library and bring more books alive. Jeez! Great review, it was very entertaining! Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come.
I love your videos and agree with so much of this video… but Ima need you to say Halle’s name correctly. You said it right once but kept saying Hailey 🥴
I honestly don’t care, If I had to choose I would 100% choose this movie over the original. The original singer was amazing (obviously) but I prefer Halle’s voice and live performance. I also love how they’ve changed Eric to be more fleshed out and his scenes with Ariel were adorable. I didn’t care about anything else in the original, didn’t care for it here so that’s not really an issue for me.
I really loved this movie. For me it’s on par with the original, I love them both for different reasons. The live action remakes have been whatever to me but I really liked this one. I haven’t felt this way since maybe Cinderella, and I hated the jungle book but to be fair I never liked the original.
landed on your chan while trying to find some genuinely insightful reviews that weren't just poor excuses for agenda-driven rants. really funny, excellent points, so great job! I'm kind of on your page about the Akwafina rap. it was... fine, I suppose? It made sense within the story, though it lacked the urgency (or worked against it?) that usually comes with musical numbers. Overall, i'm just not a fan of LMM. his music has a very similar-ish vibe that's sort of pan-North American flavoured, which is why i was disappointed but not surprised that Scuttle's song wasn't musically specific to that creature or that location.
Just like the case of Pinocchio Remakes , in the Remakes he portrayed as a OP wood puppet that can save himself while he being imprisoned by a puppeteer without the help of the fairy So what’s the purpose of the fairy for being involved of the story ? Ariel can swim to the surface while she transformed into human for the first time so what’s the purpose of her friends ? Disney is making some mistake at writing a character here Its not to be wise for Heroes character to portrayed as Miss Perfect or Mr Perfect Because it will erase an element of struggle and development of the heroes which is an important element of the Hero character If a Hero just simply portrayed as Mr or Ms Perfect in a story all the time , of course audience can get bored easily
Like how live action Mulan was perfect from the start of the movie, while animated Mulan fought to get to the top on her own accord. Disney’s making Mary sues out of its own already perfect characters.
Oh as much as I like an Atlantis Live Action, I can only imagine they'll overcorrect and add just like an hour added minutes of racial discourse. Sweet is 100% gonna be like "you guys killed my people and I'm going to make sure not another culture gets wiped out", Audrey's gonna talk about discrimination as a woman in non-traditional roles and joins with Kida when she sees that she's a strong woman or something, and Rourke and Helga gonna go full villain be like "what money-incentives, we're just pissed the origin of man isn't Aryan so we gonna straight up genocide it all". Like I get it, but Atlantis is ultimately about scientific zeal co-opted by capitalism, and a critique on colonial looting disguised as "quest of knowledge". The racial critique was there, but it is mostly done through subtext and subversion. Adding all that as text is gonna be too much.
It was everything i wanted and more. I legit preferred it to the original, it had depth and I usually hate remakes and usually dont like movies made now days compared to older movies but this made me change my perspective
This movie was almost good. Halle Bailey is a great singer, and she really does sound like the OG Ariel, but it felt like she was just doing her best voice impression of Ariel and found myself a little annoyed at her doing the babyish, fragile Disney princess voice after a while. I kind of wish she just made a more natural voice of her own or even added her own flair to the character instead of trying to be an Ariel copy. Other gripes is the under water world. It felt so dull at times even though they tried hard to make it brightly lit and colorful. I feel like it looked so unatural at times, it wasnt really opaque enough, everything was really clear most of the time and didnt really give underwater vibes. Best parts were probably Ursula, the new Castle/Village world building, Eric himself, the Caribbean spin which I wish they would have really leaned into as it could have justified Ariel being black and grounded that races swap, and Halle Bailey in the surface world scenes. Overall imo its a 7/10. It will probably just be as forgettable for me as was every other live action has been thus far.
Do you follow halle as a singer? She was adding her own flair the entire time. Im curious which part of the songs sounded babyish to you? This is how she sings all the time
@@ronnielee1009 i’m not referring to the songs the songs sounded great, though there were some moments that I wasn’t really fond of like her last “Wish I could be” on part if your world. @@alterI4 Have you listened to Halle in interviews?! That's actually how she talks. Her natural speaking voice is very soft & light. Explains why she was perfect for Ariel in the first place.

Pretty sure squid actually have more tentacles. Like ten. Or something like, eight normal tentacles + two longer appendages. So, the OG Ursula is incorrect.
The only things I like about this movie is Ariel’s voice and giving more depth to Eric’s character (like what he said in the boat why Ariel liked him to begin with and so on). I dont like that they removed or downgraded everything “grand” from the original in the remake 1. The musical production in the original was turned into a “meeting” 2. Under the sea number wasnt that colorful and grand 3. The magical moment on how the sea king turned ariel into a human (like where’s the lovely dress?!) 4. There was no grand wedding on the boat anymore And i hate the bird’s song. I just cringed throughout the song. 😅

If you didnt like it then why did you go watch another one? This is why they keep making more.
I thought it was going to be way worse but they developed the characters was actually really good
I have refused to watch Mulan (because I found out it wasn’t a musical and I was appalled) and Lion King cause I just didn’t want to. I wanted to watch this to support Halle and I’m glad I did. It was great!

The fact that you blurred out Flounder 😂
Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Jessica were the best parts of the movie, with the latter only receiving a minimal of screentime. It was quite a bit better than I expected, and Halle's vocals were fantastic.
Vanessa's (Jessica Alexander) amount of screentime in the 2023 film is close to what we got from her in the 1989 original.
No disrespect to the former two (or any one else in the movie ) but out of every one in the movie Jessica (Vannesa) deserves an Oscar the most .

In theory, yes, but Disney keeps butchering the live action movies they make.
I’m down for live action Atlantis 😂😂😂😂 it would be so easy to make
I remember folks saying that this is the method Disney should have in their heads: create live-action remakes for animated films that didn't do well in the box office.
God that song with Awkwafina was so good, I walked out of the theatre before it aired
"Ariel wanted two feet, flounder grew three" 👀 Ummm... lmao
If they do Atlantis, they should make it a TV show. The cast is so large and quirky, and the story is kind of complicated in a way that doesn't lend itself to being condensed.
Good gracious! The sheer density of jokes per second in the video is outstanding; well done, LME!
I missed the whole scene where she transforms in the ocean and walks out with the sparkly dress and the wedding scene (as well as the line Ursula says “my little poopsies” haha)
I missed those costumes!

The under the sea song didn’t hit the same as the cartoon but I actually enjoyed the movie.
I actually like the new songs more then Under the Sea which is quite sad as that was the originally the best song along with Part of your World. It wasn’t enough of like a “party” song for lack of better words it was kind of subdued😂 Obv the original isn’t a party song but it makes you want to dance.

We also gotta acknowledge Shaggy who played Sebastian in the ABC live version🇯🇲💫
Halle and Jonah were great. Good chemistry and performances. The hate is just white noise (pun intended)

@@Adronitis no remakes
I don't understand why couldn't disney just make a 3D animated version of the movie
I don't understand. Why wouldn't race be an issue if they only did villain live actions?
@Blue Lemon i didnt read your whole comment, but i wanted to point out that brandy's Cinderella is disney. I think it's a part of the ABC disney network. Some of the cast members are even making an appearance in disney channel's original movie descendents 4.

Just like the case of Pinocchio Remakes , in the Remakes he portrayed as a OP wood puppet that can save himself while he being imprisoned by a puppeteer without the help of the fairy
So what’s the purpose of the fairy for being involved of the story ?
Ariel can swim to the surface while she transformed into human for the first time so what’s the purpose of her friends ?
Disney is making some mistake at writing a character here
Its not to be wise for Heroes character to portrayed as Miss Perfect or Mr Perfect
Because it will erase an element of struggle and development of the heroes which is an important element of the Hero character
If a Hero just simply portrayed as Mr or Ms Perfect in a story all the time , of course audience can get bored easily
Funny thing is that my mom and I just saw the live action version today
