I am working as an embedded software engineer in automotive. It is my first job as a developer that I got during my studies (last semester) at the university as an electrical engineer (majoring in computers and image processing). What I like about my job is that I work with fundamental stuff, and there is no library that can solve my problem (most of the time). Therefore, I really need to understand the ins and outs of the programming language, compilations, linking, hardware that I am working with, and protocols that my application is using. So if you like to work with fundamental stuff and get dirty, then I suggest you join our little army ;P

I am not an embedded systems developer. However, I did at some point buy some DJ lights and manage to create a Java application (because that was what I happened to know and there was a library to use) that communicates with them via the DMX protocol. There is something simply exhilarating about the fusion of digital and "reality." I could move a little slider on my screen and suddenly the light would change colors or move left to right in nearly real time, in the "real world.". It was awesome. Now, I'd like to learn more.

I work for the aerospace industry as a system engineer, always side by side with the embedded software team (both devs and testers).
At this environment I've seen projects developed in C++ and Ada, while tests can be more flexible to C++ and Python.
Currently there is a high demand for professionals to work as embedded software engineers or embedded system engineers in the aerospace industry.
But I should warn young people that this is a complex area that never stops developing and changing. So you gotta like to study (and not only pursue high salaries), cause you will never be able to stop studying in this career.
If you don't like to study, if you're not a good self-learner, if you don't like puzzles and complex problems, this career is not for you. Otherwise, welcome to the dark side of the force! 🤘🏻

Hey professor, I have some questions about embedded systems. I've always liked low level development. Can embedded systems work be done remotely online, or do you have to physically go to the lab? Because I want to live in a rural area and grow my own vegetables, not being tied to any particular urban area. So if I can do an embedded systems job remotely and live in a rural area that would be great. Also I want to know is embedded systems development less susceptible to AI automation comparing to higher level development? I have been looking at how web development is predicted to getting automated away by autocoder tools, that you have these business people creating web apps using ChatGPT, just slapping together some code and deploying a full site. I wonder if embedded systems are a more stable career choice, since the engineer must know much more low level details? Actually I like these low level details. I've worked in C/C++ programmers, and Assembly code, and Compiler Development before. Please answer me. Thank you in advance.

Software engineering is basically creating software, this software can be anything from embedded software, to an app or a computer operating system or application.
The main difference in embedded software is that you work very close to the hardware and you usually face resource constraints (RAM, ROM, CPU …)
