I’ve only heard this version, but all I can say is that: I can actually feel the tense he is feeling coming from him. The actor understood how the character KNEW that if this roll didn’t go he wouldn’t be happy ever again. He portrayed the nervousness perfectly for me. I think he did a fine job singing. I find his voice actually quite soothing to listen to while he sings.

I had a low tolerance for him as a rule. Maybe because he was too intense for me since I was just a kid when he was at the top. I'm not even exactly
sure; but I preferred his contemporaries such as James Stewart and CLark Gable. I felt the same way about James Cagney; but loved him in YANKEE DOODLE.. Maybe it's because the singing and dancing made those tough guys more vulnerable.
Same with Bogart until I saw the comedy he did in ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. He doesn't sing or dance;but the vulnerability is still there because he has to be funny.

Whether that's a good thing or not, or if its even a thing he set out to accomplish, this man cast such a large shadow that men today are still trying to emulate it.
