- Bauhaus were an English rock band formed in Northampton in 1978. The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass guitar). The band was originally Bauhaus 1919 before they dropped the numerical portion within a year of formation. With their dark and gloomy sound and image, Bauhaus are generally considered the first gothic rock group.
Bauhaus first broke up in 1983. Peter Murphy began a solo career while the other members continued as Tones on Tail and, later, Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland. The band reunited for a 1998 tour and on a more permanent basis in 2005. The group announced plans to disband again following the release of their final album, Go Away White, in 2008.
Now im 54 and still love this
well done
Checking in, about to turn 49. This is always an amazing piece. Over 30 years of listening to it and it’s better all the time.

Greetings friends, I'm 48 this year & still love this and the feelings it evokes for me. All 3. Oh how I love it🖤
Hey big brother! I'm 50. So my son (in college) is dating this girl who loves music and identifies people with music. He comes home over Christmas with an assignment from her. Find 10 bands that your Dad likes and 10 that your Mom likes and write them down so I can know who they are. This particular album made the list. I finally meet her during spring break and the conversation starts like this... "tell me what this is about, what is..... why..... and they are so... What does this mean to you?" *She hands me a bright pink phone with Spotify softly playing "The Three Shadows." I blankly state, "It means your volume is too low, turn it up."
One of the weirdest and most interesting recordings. BAUHAUS where one of the most surprising and creative bands of the early Goth aera.
Well put. People get jealous😏
This has nothing on Virgin Prunes or Cindytalk.
THE most creative goth post-punk band, that is.
@@patrickbertlein4626going to check them both out heard of virgin prunes
i'll never forget one last summer when I was listening to this. it was 1 o' clock in the morning and i was reading Frankenstein, listening to pt 3, and crying because i was sleep-deprived
Quite the interesting memory. At least it stands out
Love the trilogy, yet my favourite has always been Part II. ♥
respect Bauhaus
Masterpiece
Brilliant album and brilliant experimental music! Never ages.
Timeless
I love the feel of part 1. Part 2 is absolutely awesome. 🙂
This trilogy, Mask, and Burning Skies from Tones on Tail are the most evil & dark sounds since Black Sabbath.
Never thought of Bauhaus as Sabbath but you made me agree.
Hardly. Aghast, Manii, Desiderii Marginis, Nihtsin, list goes on and on.
@@patrickbertlein4626 All came after.
"l'aperitif du mort" by liaisons dangereuse, scary tune !
Burning From The Inside is a darker song than all those put together.
I love this **** band...
...Perfekt ....
Dankeschön.
I'm 37 but listening to it, I'm coming back to being 20 something, snowy winter at home and my favourite black coat 🖤🖤🖤
I'm 59 but listening to this brings me back to being 20 something.
everything you could want in one band
Brings back memories of when I was 17 in 1979. Listening to this on vinyl why drinking paregoric.
Only... the LP on which this track appears was not released until 1982. I think that your recollection of the year is a little askew!
Lyrics 4:51
Oh classic gentlemen
Say your prayers
To the wind, of prostitution
To your faces, and Rex complexes
Riddle my breast
Full of the oppressed puss
Oh gentlemen, with your fish
That you surround, all around
And you man, will always point
Your fishes, at me
6:19
But I will always exist
Because I always exist
Damn good too
The rat race begins
The fat face stings
I hold the fresh pink baby
With a smile
I slice off those rosy cheeks
Because I feel so thirsty
And Oedipus Rex complexes
...riddle my closed bloated breast
7:38
Oh gentlemen
Swallow your prayers
Because the wind makes a mockery of men
Your soul becomes a fish
You swim in idle waters
And drink other fishes piss
Your soul feeds on fish
On piss, puss and men
Who in turn, become as you have become
A fish
No, not even that, but a symbol of fish
8:24
Hooked by the baby flesh of maggots
A ripple of life in tin
This tin could become your world too
So choose between this and water
Choose between tin and piss
Do you still feel thirsty now
Are you thirsty now
Are you thirsty now
Do you still feel
Thirsty
Thirsty now
FIN PUT*S ....

Thank you for posting.
I missed hearing the intricate sounds on this album, could hear every one on LP back in early 80s. Thank you.
Part 2 is a ballroom waltz, with Dracula hosting the party🦇
part 2 is yes a common melody, captured in 1965's italian o casa d'irene ruclips.net/video/riG1RQzzy6g/видео.html

Yes!!!!
It makes me think of the Black Lodge Bar in Twin Peaks (the movie).
Which bar? Is it from Firewalk With Me?

Damn good tune.
Easily the scariest thing to listen to whilst on magic mushrooms 💀👍
I play Bauhaus for Halloween. this & Mask are my favorites for it .

try King Volcano, same band...another good trippin song.
What about... Nerves
I remember hearing this in the mid-80s and it freaked me out.
Now i see its intentions after hearing the goth of the 90s.
wow this is gorgeous.
Absolutely beautiful loud
Alright a) longtime fan of the mighty Bauhaus b) ive not heard this in ages - i love their whole catalogue but this is the first ive heard 3 shadows in a long time c) the reason i looked this up - i was listening to something else.
Now, my fellow Bauhaus fans - a challenge. Listen to the song A Casa Di Irene, by Nico Fidenco. Listen to the whole song. And then listen to Part 2 of 3 Shadows.
wow!
more original here ruclips.net/video/riG1RQzzy6g/видео.html
Fn brilliant. I think I would enjoy a day wandering rabbit holes with you
How about that! A Casa de Irene also evokes memories of Tortilla Flats, a novel by John Steinbeck. No complaints here :-)
Magnificent timeless grooves that will never die
Goth belongs in the grave........sorry
@@daBEAGLE1017 they weren’t goth,do your homework
@@craignuttall8846 so what were they then? Not Punk or even New Wave. Were they Art Rock like Bowie or The Velvet Underground?

Peace brother.
great bauhaus
America has never produced anything to touch this.
I really wanna put part 2 in a movie someday.
Peter sang Pt2 in Northampton last week - never thought i'd hear it live. Worth waiting 40 years for.
@@SteeeveO Wow, that's so cool!
A friend of my dad's offered to get him and my mom tickets to see Peter Murphy, but they were going to be too busy to go, so he passed. It would have been great, though. Bauhaus is one of our favorites.
@@bananasplitlady3045 maybe the 50th anniversary then? Peter is already 300 years old after all.

Glad to see you are still getting mail.
I love this. Some people I know are unfortunate, and they love Harry Potter instead.
Can't understand the connection my man
I like Bauhaus and I'm also a lifelong Harry Potter fan
🖤
I would not classify them as rock....but you have good taste, this is exceptional. Daniel plays the guitar like a dream.
Reminds me of being a kid hanging out in grimsargh Lancashire loving Bauhaus and so much good music including early hip hop breakdancing era
@@craignuttall8846must have been awesome, In the 80's I was an orange county punk rock guy, got to meet a lot of cool bands, I even met daniel ash, but never Peter Murphy.
Part 3 always reminds me of the old Don Knotts movie, The Incredible Mr.Limpett where he kept saying "I wish, i wish, i wish i were a fish". So choose between tin and piss...do you still feel thirsty now?
Don Knotts was awesome.
Part 1 reminds me the beginning of "Riot" (Dead Kennedys)

Still they Delve, always will.
I will always exist.....

PURE 100% FUCKING GENIUS!!!...
hey,did they really were in bed together in nyc hotel room?
Peter was so fucking STARSTRUCK when he ran into Iggy ( one of his main IDOLS & influences... ) there in 1980 at "The Algonquin" hotel in NYC that apparently he started "tickling" Iggy and BEGGING him to come "hang out" with him in his hotel room!!!... Iggy was totally amused and supposedly said: "Hey you're some fresh kid" and invited Peter to go join him in his room instead where there were various "chemicals & substances" some "messing around" and before long they ended up in bed!!!...
wow that's amazing story,i knew that iggy was infuelnce on peter,i wish i was there with them trying out some substances :))) sry for bad english, not my native
I wish I had been old enough to JOIN Peter & Iggy in BED!!!.... Unfortunely, in 1980 I was just an 11 year old kid!!!...
i wish i was born earlier,i'm 24 and even if i'm a man i would join them in bed :) i would bring them shrooms and weed :)) iggy is real fuckin' dog!
When I was a little boy all of these bands were massive, all off the back of the Sex Pistols revolution. It only makes me sad that by the time I was old enough to start gigging, it had all gone. I never had a Scooby at my age then that musical tastes would change. There were literally hundreds of viable street cred UK bands to get into. I am nearly 50 now and I know I will never get over the fact I was old enough to enjoy the music, but not old enough to gig or club. I was just old enough that I could have gone to LiveAid but that music was terrible.
Too young for Punk, too old for Grunge. Hey at least you had John Cougar Mellonhead. Sorry.
@@daBEAGLE1017 😉
Take the fish, add the potato!
Darkness there and nothing more.
I had all their albums and singles. Everything they every published. And my mother dumped everything when I moved out. She dumped all my Sex Pistols albums and 2000ads also. Lesson: lock yer shit up.

SweetSweetWaldo That's weird... I was pondering this line.. And wondering if I had it right. It would not leave me... But this is not the song.... So why am I here? Fuck all that!! I Love Bauhaus and always will. Whatever.

I'm 38 years old and nobody seems to ever recognize where this came from. Any old school surrealists in the Haus?
Still a functioning Dadaist, here. I automatically reject your manifesto.
My God.....there's a Boycott / Skalping in Abbey. Overcharged to be underfed at the Altar as the Sacrifice calls for a "Fasted Lamb" not a "Real Boy with Woolen Eyes".

Here's the thing ... Bauhaus are not and never were GOTH or Gothic ... they were bemused by the label and eventually wanted nothing to do with it at all. What punters missed was that Bauhaus were about Avant Garde and Theatre - this is what all the references to Najinsky and Artaud AND Lugosi were all about. But as usual - the dumb dumb public only understand base themes and miss anything nuanced. The association got so bad that when the band split ... Daniel Ash and Co dressed in all White outfits when performing as Tones on Tail! Been a listener since the early 80's folks ... time to wake up ... it's not Goth! Goth it?
Methinks thou doth protest too much......
Peter Murphy himself said the same thing!
exactly, bauhaus is the only "goth" band i enjoy listening to
Lots of them, there is. Ex. JD.
Joy Division is industrial and
post - punk in reality.
Het auteurecht.
The more people claim Bauhaus were not goth, the more convincing it is that they were. Methinks thou doth protest too much.......
Bauhaus, not gothic band, is a post big Punk band with another conception of punk music
I'd say there is no such thing as a goth band.
i'd say gothic punk/rock,,this band is original no doubt, for some bands it's hard to define their genre of music preciesly
Bauhaus was really versatile with their music so it would kind of an understatement to call them goth
Correct!!
there's no such thing as 'a'

Good song but bad album. I prefer their first album
More of a concept album than the 1st album.
