Regarding slippery socks: In my parts they sell non-stick stickers called "Sockenstopper" to put on the sole. My sister used them, according to her it does work. Another thing I've seen (but not tried) is Sock Stop. It's liquid latex, you can get it from many brands and in different colors. Put some on the sole, once it dries it's supposed to prevent slipping. You can still wash the socks at up to 40 degrees celsius. I think the material resembles the non-slip dots on those storebought cozy at-home socks usually made of synthetic fibres. You can put drops, lines or squiggles of it on the sole or paint complicated patterns if that's your thing.

Hi Andrea, I love my knitted socks but do have wood floors. To avoid slipping all over the house I use faux leather from Joann's. I simply cut out the general shape of the sole of the sock and then using thread doubled, sew (baste) the sole on. This forms a grippy surface but NOT non-skid, letting your sock still glide on the floor but they don't slip. I don't like non-skid dots because I find them too grippy. Another plus is if it wears out, I can just add another faux leather sole. I find this to be an inexpensive and a quick fix without modifying the sock in anyway. So if the sock owner is not happy with the results, no harm no foul, just snip the sewn stitches and the sock is just as knitted. Since it's faux leather, it's also washable just like the sock. Hope this helps.

For sure this high arch gal has tried many heels and I end up going back to heel flap and gusset. I did recently find a toe up heel flap and gusset pattern. To adjust regular toe up patterns I need to start early in order to increase by like 16 stitches to each side of the gusset!

Andrea, THANK YOU for designing socks with a heel flap and gusset!!!! I am one of those who has a high arch and has to add stitches to the flap accordingly. I have made your curio socks and they are adorable but don’t fit my feet as well as a hf&g. I’m glad that you’re venturing into other constructions for those of us with different feet. So excited to knit the Oxbow Socks!

Toft in the UK sells sheets of cork that can be cut and sewn to the bottom of socks and slippers. I haven’t used it on socks yet but have sewn it to the underside of needlepointed coasters. Very easy. To work with and supposed to be washable as well.

Thank you for explaining about the heel flap and gusset and how it can be altered to fit a high arch. I have very high arches so my first pair of socks did not fit comfortably. I love knitting socks but I didn't knit socks for myself after that first pair. Now I can knit a pair that might actually be comfortable on my weird feet. Thank you!

When I knit Gib for my brother I added short rows to round out the neckline through the raglan sections! I think I added 8 short rows in order to get through the stitch texture repeat so that it was aligned again once I started working full rounds. my short rows included the raglans and my w&ts were along the front collar, if that makes sense. It was a bit fiddly because it involved working some of the raglan cables on the wrong side, but I was really happy with the result!

Also regarding slippery socks: I wear my hand knit socks almost every day, but I wear them inside Birkenstock slipper clogs (in the cold months of course… I do live in Alaska). In my opinion, it’s the best cozy combo! You get the traction of the sole, plus the arch support of a birkenstock, and still get to wear your hand knit socks!

I love how top down socks are so easily customizable with the heel flap and gusset. I have a high arch learned to measure my heel from floor to about mid ankle bone and knit my heel flap to that measurement (2.75”). This can be done on any pattern without disruption. I just knit my heel length and pick up the additional stitches along each side (not what the pattern says). For me is about 20-22-ish stitches and then continue the gusset decreases until I reach my original stitch count. Works for me every time. Haven’t missed your podcast since the beginning and have learned so much about knitting, fiber, yarn content, etc. You have made me a better, more confident knitter! Thank you so much ❣️

Congratulations on your move! I'm working a two colour stranded project (Halibut by Caitlin Hunter) in the same colours and yarn as the pattern. It's going well, but I am seeing the light colour peeking out from behind the darker colour sometimes in the finished fabric in places. I've never had that happen before with colour work, but I wondering if it's because there was a float in the row below the increase and when I pick up the dark yarn to make the increase, the light colour shines through. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? It's often right around where the pattern repeats are because that's where the increases happen, but it's also where I need to make a float.

I have used ‘Sock Stop’ on the soles of socks and it works well. I wouldn’t recommend putting dots on the sole as that can be uncomfortable for walking on. Instead I put a row of the Sock Stop on the sole then spread it out thinly over the sole with a piece of card.

Another way to adapt a heel flap and gusset is to use a square (Dutch) heel turn instead of the rounded (French) heel turn if you want a narrower heel or a less deep inset. A square heel has fewer stitches to pick up than the round turn.

I did try adding puffy dots to the bottom of socks for my children and for me to reduce slipping on wood floors. My children disliked the addition of the dots because they couldn’t slide at all and I didn’t like them because they kept making me stumble. They are very sticky and didn’t enhance safety for me. I do think slipperiness has declined with washing and wearing with my socks but do think trying non superwash sock yarn could help too. Hope that is helpful.

I actually use "Chinese Waitress" cast-on for hats (I think it's also called double chain?) its actually a short-tail cast-on, or a crocheted, but you CAN do it just with just your needles if you're patient.
Its just as stretchy as German twisted, but I think its prettier & you don't end up with that sometimes too long tail.

My brother actually broke his neck(!!!) slipping down hardwood stairs in socks. Not hand knit, just regular socks--and he's fine after surgery to fuse the broken vertebrae. So this is a real concern. Fabric paint dots work fine but some people find them too bumpy to their sensitive tootsies (hubs and daughter for example). I've thought about doing some duplicate stitch elastic thread on the soles, maybe in dashes along the ball of the foot? anyone have thoughts?
